"Why are you so amazed? I'm not a herk. I just pretend to be a jerk," Arlington said "I actually tend to compliment people that I don't hate," he said. He could feel himself start to sweat again from the heat and exercise.
"Probably. I just don't know where else Chase will be unless we check all the rooms," he said, frowning. "And the little banana head won't text me back," he said, waking off the dance floor. He checked his phone once again. No texts. That wasn't uncommon for him, but he had been hoping to see one from Chase

"I'm starting to get that," Keilana said, realizing she got a bit narrow-minded again. She mentally scolded herself. She knew first impressions weren't always right, but she kept using their original introduction as her point of reference. "I just like being complimented! It doesn't happen enough." That wasn't a lie. A part of her need for compliments was most likely a result of her parents always being both overly critical and overprotective.
She followed him off the 'dance floor' and giggled at the insult. "Clever. Guess we'll start checking out the rooms then," she said.

"I guess that would look a little suspicious, even if we went from room to room and only stayed in there for a short time," she said with a shrug. She didn't like the idea of taking Ash's swim shark for the same reasons Drake had said. Size and style. "I'm cool with either. We could dance, but there's no promise I won't embarrass you. Or we could go to my place, grab a swimsuit, and then go out into the pool away from everyone else and hang out," she said, letting him make the choice. Mia was very indecisive. "Also, interesting factoid. I can't swim. I love being in pools and lakes and stuff, I just stay where I can stand and goof around," she said, "Bt I've never actually learned to swim." *** "No, it doesn't. If I were you, I wouldn't sleep there for a day or two. Let everything clear out," Sophia said. "Do we want to drive or walk? I mean it's pretty nice out, so walking honestly wouldn't be horrible," she pointed out. *** "I sti am one of those guys," Chase said with a laugh. "Just wait until winter comes." He dug his fork into the cake, taking another bite. It was just soft enough to put up only a little fight when you reached the bottom layer. Perfect timing. "Thanks. I think my grandma would appreciate you saying that," he said, looking out over the yard. "She lives out in Wisconsin. That's where I spent the school year until I moved out here full time. I think it was freshman year?" he said, popping open another juice box. Drake laughed. "That sounds pitiful. I'm going to teach you how to swim at the beach sometime. Just out to the sandbar. It'll be fun." He was like a fish in the water. Drake had even rallied for a swimming pool to be added to Westbrook High School so they could have a swim team, but sadly no one had supported him. "Let's just go dance. It'll be a lot easier, and I bet Jack is starting to wonder where the heck you disappeared to." Smiling, he pulled her off of the bed and out of the bedroom, back into the throes of the party that was still going steady despite how late the night was getting. -- "If only I had somewhere else to stay," Jace replied with a sad shake of his head, and then laughed. "Let's just walk. The beach isn't too far and I like looking at the moon." Although, the moon wasn't nearly as pretty with all of the city lights messing with the sky. -- "I'm afraid I'll have to stand on the sidelines and shake my head in disapproval." Ash replied. "Although if you keep bringing me cake, I might go out there and do it with you." Ash took another bite of cake and then a sip of her juice box. "You used to just come out here for the summers to be with your parents? Why is that?" She asked, wondering if maybe she went a little too far, but the mixture of sugar and exhaustion from it being so late was easily messing with her judgement. "Oh, uh, sorry if it's too personal of a question." She added as an awkward afterthought.

We won't secretly hate you. It's your thing. Do what you want to do. Sophia can be a senior and Jack will just be on the sidelines giving advice and making dad jokes)

((Well, I mean, if you all are cool with that. xD I'm just going to knock Jace down to a senior and maybe save Kat for when people are older, or drop her into high school later.
Oh Jack... XD I like the host of overbearing siblings there will still be.
Pssh. I don't understand. XD Of course, I live in the "State of Lakes" where I've been told that if you walk a mile in any direction, you will hit a lake. So I make fun of my friends who can't swim because seriously, how. XD))

(Jack will be so proud of all his younger siblings, even the drop outs. When it comes time for graduation, he'll be taking pictures of like every graduate and telling them that he's proud and loves them
I love the lake. I like boating and fishing and playing in water.
Just not swimming. I like holding onto other people and making them carry me through the water which is why no one swims with me anymore
And also now that I'm interacting more with Drake i definitely like him as much as Mason (Maybe more but don't tell Mason)
And you might have lakes but we have lakes and cheese XD)

((Not gonna lie, that was me when my friends graduated. XD My parents went, too, and we were whistling and yelling their names and embarrassing them.
I'm not too much a fan of boating and fishing because I am horribly impatient and hate being still.
I have a friend just like you. XD She tiptoed out to the sand bar while our other friend, who's like really tall, just walked beside her to make sure she didn't drown.
Thanks? XD They're both almost equally likable. I wrote a book with them a while back and my mom was basically back and forth every chapter on whether or not she liked Mason or hated him.
I do like cheese. ;-; We have a "cheese town" that has a giant mouse holding a block of cheese? If that counts? XD ;-; And so much jerky and fudge.))

{I'm waiting for Jack to just meet all of the younger characters and immediately adopt them. It'll happen. One day...
My asthma makes it difficult for me to swim often T.T
As a younger sibling, I do disagree with my own statement but in writing it's pretty great. A man or a woman lol she's not picky
I have... trees. And all four seasons}

(Boating is so much fun though. Especially when you bring a tube. We went tubing at my friends party and her grandpa was so much fun when he was driving
When we go out to the fish crib in this one lake, I always hold on to my cousin and he brings me out.
Idk man Drake's just adorable
We have a cheese castle. Also lots of beer and cheese stores)

"I'd also like to offer going to the store as an option. Stores are fun at night because none of the employees care about anything. They just want to go home," Mia said, following Drake out of the room.
"Dancing's cool, but you're kinda gonna have to be careful so I don't step on you," she said, again making fun of her inability to dance. Just like swimming, she liked to laugh at her lack of skills.
Except for her social skills. That wasn't funny. That's why she was boyfriendless and pretty friendless at the young age of 17.
No. She wasn't going to let that bother her. Not tonight.
***
"I'd offer you a bed at my place, but we don't have one. It's packed pretty tightly. Mia and I share a room with bunk beds and Jack has his own room that's also part office for us to do homework in," she said, shaking her head. It was a pretty small place, but that's all their parents would help pay for. The three of them together didn't make enough for anything better.
"I like the stars and moon. Up north we always stare at them," she said, looking up. She began walking in the direction of the beach.
*** "I'll bring cake out into the snow and you can come get it," Chase said. He took another bite of the cake. It was really good.
He shook his head. "No, it's not too personal. My parents are always working. Like all the time. So my grandma watched us during the school year to make sure we went to bed on time and did our homework. Arlo and I, mostly him, messed up a bit and we're sent to live here all the time after his second suspension. Our parents at lead trust us now to take care of ourselves, but also our sister," he said. He opened his phone and pulled up a picture of the little girl. "We're practically raising her because our parents are so busy."

(Jack will just pop in cause I need him in my life.
I may or may not have asthma? If I do it's not super bad. We got an inhaler from the doctor but still haven't picked it up from the pharmacy so I haven't seen if it works.
We also have um we have lots of cheese. And beer. And cows)

{I went through three doctors before someone FINALLY told me I had asthma it was terrible. My asthma isn't super bad either, but STILL.
I honestly don't even know what my state has. We have rain but it doesn't actually rain as much as people seem to think... Mostly we just have a lot of trees and pretty aesthetic shots of nature}

"I don't get complimented either, but I guess that's my fault for being such a banana head," he said, using he insult again. "Me and Chase have all these weird insults for each other so we don't accidentally sweat in front of Ella or our parents. Banana head. Shoelace. What the Krispy Kreme. That kinda stuff," he said with a laugh. "Alright. Let's head out," he said. Arlington went down the hall and opened up a door. The room was empty. He moved to the next door. That one was locked. He just assumed Chase wasn't in there.

((Silly doctors, man. XD
Well that sounds pretty! I'd trade that for wine and lakes... well, maybe not. XD I do like having lakes.))
"Maybe we can slowly dance our way to the door, and then leave and head to the store. I do love toy aisles late at night." Drake said as he pulled Mia out onto the dance floor. "And you can sometimes ride the bikes around and not get yelled at as easily!"
He really liked riding princess bikes around the store. So what? "But first, we have to dance a little bit more so you can get the full party experience." Drake laughed and started pulling some not so great dance moves, but it was great all the same. Just because you could tell how happy he was.
--
"That does sound cramped and not very fun." Jace replied. He shoved his hands into his pockets and breathed in the cool night air. There was something nice about being outside late at night that Jace had always loved. "How do you manage being that close to family? I would lose my mind."
"Up north, huh? We used to live up north before moving down here, but that was when I was in kindergarten."
--
Ash sighed. "I would go out in the snow for cake." It was the truth. Free cake? There was nothing better.
"Doesn't sound like a bad life, right? Did you guys give the birds Red Bull?" Ash joked. "I mean, I'm glad you're here now. Not many other people would have traded me a cake for juice." She laughed and then looked at his phone. "As far as small squishy human spawns go, I guess she's pretty cute." Ash was not a child person, really.

"Heck yeah. Also Jack used to date one of the managers of Walmart so if she's working tonight, we'd be so safe. As long as we don't break anything," Mia said. She laughed at Drake's moves. Though she was abbot nervous about dancing, she realized that nobody seemed to focus beyond themselves, or the person/people they came with. So she felt better and started dancing with Drake, though her moves weren't much better than his.
She noticed Jack watching her from a distance, but she didn't care. If anything, he should appreciate that she was spending her time with Drake instead of Mason. Speaking of Mason... no. She cut the thought off and focused on trying not to dance too horribly.
***
"We make it work. I mean, Mia and I just split our room in half and don't bother each other. Jack is always out with someone, either a girl or the newest kid he decided to adopt into his ever growing pack of younger siblings. I'm 96% sure you're in that group," she said.
"Yeah, we go up there on vacation. Big place. Big family. It's exhausting, but fun," she said, staring. Up at the sky as they walked.
**
"Free cake is worth anything. Even frost bite," he said with a laugh.
"Yeah, I like it better here than our old school. People appreciate me here more," he said. "That's, uh, actually why Arlo got his second suspension. The forest time was because of a prank we pulled. I was getting bullied by thai idiot named Chris Davis and Arlo just hit him one day. They got into a huge fight and Arlo was suspended. I'll never forget that image of Chris with a bloody nose," Chase laughed, tapping the other end of his fork on the table as he stared out over the yard.

Keilana giggled again at the repeated insults. "Aw, that's so cute. I think I've just conditioned myself to not swear in front of my parents, but otherwise, I'll swear pretty easily around my friends. Hmm, I'm not the best at compliments either, but I'll certainly try! We both deserve more compliments!" Just adding that last part felt odd on her tongue, but she kept up the false cheer with a smile. She didn't know how to admit things, so when she did, it was just weird for her.
For the most part, Keilana trailed behind him, letting him take the lead. She was too much of a follower to have the guts to open a door without knowing what was on the other side. She peered over his shoulder every time they opened a door, making a joking and disappointed comment when the search came up with nothing.

"Knowing my luck, my parents wouldn't be the problem. My sister would be. I'd drop something on my foot and if I wasn't so conditioned to use our fake language, then she'd be repeating some words and I'd be getting a call from her teacher," Arlo made a face. "I don't like her teacher. She seems to think I'm not a good enough parent to Ella just because I'm 16," he said.
When they'd made it through all unlocked doors and not found a trace of Chase, he sat down in a hallway where they could see and hear the party, but not be in it. "Guess we don't get any cake," he said with a frown.
