Okay so I've had this idea for a 1X1 that I would love to do.
So basically I'd like to base this on the (admittedly not gigantic amount) I know about the final months of the Romanov family in Russia, where the former tsar and his family were kept under essentially house arrest until their eventual execution.
I'm aware that there were rumours that Maria Romanov, one of the daughters, may have been romantic with one of the guards keeping her under house arrest.
So here's the idea:
There was a huge historic empire (we won't necessarily set in Russia and with the Romanovs because I'm still learning the details of the events of this period) and the emperor and his family have been overthrown. They are being kept under house arrest in their palace and are under constant guard. Basically one of the emperor's children starts a relationship with a guard. We can go from there and potentially make this plot really dramatic.
I prefer literate rpers who won't pressure me to be active (I am VERY busy with school and will not by any means be on daily) and can do at least 10 lines of roleplay. If you're interested let me know

Ooh awesome! It's okay, doesn't have to be accurate, I'm not pinning it to 1910s Russia but I think like in twrms of fashion and culture we can stick to 1910s. So do you have oreferences in terms of which character you were thinking ofbdoing and if you have a particular gender pairing in mind? Also if you did have a charrie name that'd be good)

Hm... I was thinking maybe I'd be the emperor's kid. As for a specific pairing, I think m/m would be pretty interesting.
The character I had in mind is named Alistair Levin, but I can always change his name/use a different character who might fit better.

Andrei Ivanov supposed he had had quite a successful couple of months. He had been a soldier until he had been among those to mutiny against the emperor's tyrannical rule earlier in the year. The revolutionaries had since found these rebelling soldiers to be of use to them and this was why Andrei found himself guarding the former royal family, in their own palace.
There was no telling what was going to happen to them, but the new government was really just playing it by ear; there was a real concern that the Levin family could become a real rallying point for any opposition. The last thing most people in the empire wanted was for the emperor to be reinstated to power.
Though Andrei did feel sorry for the rest of the family, the emperor's wife and children. The children, especially, had done no wrong and he did not think they deserved this. But anyone with Levin blood could be a threat at this point, innocent or not. Especially the oldest child (I'm just gonna say he has siblings), Alistair, who was about the same age as Andrei and most certainly old enough to be a figure the opposition could rally around.
He was patrolling the hallways outside the family's chambers now, bored out of his mind. Not much had happened. Some of the younger children had been playing. They seemed to have little awareness of their predicament, and neither Andrei nor the rest of the guards had the heart to deny them play.
Andrei was in his early twenties, tall and lithe with pale skin, short dark hair and blue eyes. His face was not as intimidating as he would have wanted it to be as a guard; he had a naturally friendly-looking face, which meant he had to try extra hard to be tough and intimidating.

-- (( = OOC = )) -- No worries, this is great! I like to type semi-long replies, so this is usually what my posts look like, unless there isn't much going on/I don't have much muse.
-- (( = IC = )) -- Once, the royal family might have been somewhat happy. Once, they had ruled, his father leading the people with a cruel attitude and an iron fist. Once, the oldest child could often be seen smiling and laughing.
That was a time that felt like ages ago.
Alistair was not happy (if he had ever been truly happy before) and he did not smile. He didn't laugh. Not one word had spoken by him since his family had been put under house arrest, since the people had decided, once and for all, that they were sick of the Levin family. What was there to say, after all? Who was there to talk to? His parents spent almost every day bickering and pointing fingers; he'd rather stay out of it.
Reading was a good way to pass the time, but Alistair couldn't focus today. Sometimes he would walk around the building, but he didn't have the energy for that, either. Even the bright, happy smiles of his younger siblings as they asked him to play couldn't cheer him up.
He shook his head at his youngest sibling, a small girl with rosy cheeks and curly brown hair, handing her toy back to her. Alistair gave her a quick hug before setting her down and sending her off to play with their other sisters. Out of five children, he was his father's only son, with four younger sisters between the ages of five and two. Out of all of them, he was the spitting image of the emperor. Light, curly brown hair that framed his face. Dark, small brown eyes that might have seemed dangerous or suspicious, but were really just blank most days. Tan skin, a sharp nose and chin, a tall, lanky frame. Unlike his father, he had none of his muscle. None of his confidence. Alistair walked with a hunch, rather than straight and arrogant, like his father.
Now, Alistair had taken a seat by the large, clear glass windows inside of his prison of a room. There were guards on both sides of him, watching him intensely, as he stared at the empty garden outside. The first snow of the year was falling gently and all the plants had wilted, left unattended by their rebelling gardeners. He rested his head on his arms, wrapped around his knees, and sighed. If there was anything Alistair missed more than anything, it was being able to explore outside. To take a nice stroll. Now he couldn't even sleep without someone watching him.

Andrei had his back to the oldest child; he was fairly sure he wasn't going anywhere with two guards nearby, and started when he felt a solid weight hit him in the back of the leg. He turned around to see a little girl. One of the Levin daughters. She was about five and was also joined by the youngest daughter, who was about two.
"Who are you?" the five-year-old asked.
Andrei considered it for a moment and, figuring there was no harm with it, crouched so he could be level with the little girls but still stand quickly if trouble arose.
"I'm Andrei," he replied with a little smile, not wanting to scare the little girl too much.
"Are you one of the bad men Daddy told us about?" the girl asked suspiciously
"Well, I suppose in your daddy's eyes I'm a very bad man indeed, but I'm not going to hurt you."
"Then will you play with us, Mr Bad Man?" the girl asked
"I'm afraid I can't, I have to stay here. If you're playing here though I can. What do you have there?"
He took a look at the toy the youngest daughter had been trying to offer her brother moments previously and since there wasn't much to do, began playing with the girls a little bit, glancing up at the corridors every now and then to keep an eye on what was happening as he did.
All was well in the house at that moment, though; he was keeping the daughters busy, the parents were in their chamber and he could still see the oldest son and what he was doing from his vantage point playing with the little girls. Everything was fine.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- Everything was fine. For a while, at least, before the yelling began. Alistair's father, his voice deep and booming, could be heard clearly from the boy's room. His other two sisters, three and four respectively, jumped and ran to hide behind Andrei, clinging to his legs fearfully. They had heard their father yell plenty of times, but it was still scary. "Daddy's being scary!"
Most of the yelling consisted of the emperor blaming his wife, of yelling that everyone would great regret this, that they would see what a big mistake they had made. And, of course, screaming at Alistair through the walls. "Alistair, you ungrateful brat! Answer me! Don't you dare ignore your father."
And ignore him was all Alistair did, huffing and turning back towards the window. On the very first night, they'd screamed at each other face-to-face, furious and vicious. Alistair's arms still bore the bruises his father's tight grip had left. It wasn't his fault his father was a bad ruler, but somehow it was his fault, at the same time, for not being a better son and heir.
Well, he wasn't an heir any longer. Just a sad boy stuck in a sad room with his oblivious sisters. Oh, and the guards too.
Alistair glanced at Andrei, just watching him for a moment, before lying back in his seat and closing his eyes. Sleeping didn't seem possible, but he'd rather fake it than do anything else.

Andrei sighed as he heard yet more yelling from the former emperor, but he still allowed the little girls to cling to his legs, terrified of their father.
"Alright, girls, it's okay. Andrei will handle this."
Annoyed at all of the yelling, Andrei marched up to the wall Alistair's dad had been yelling through and pounded on it with his fist, intent on being equally scary.
"Hey, you don't give the orders around here anymore. You're scaring your daughters, Mr Levin."
"Is that the idiotic young guard? Listen here, you little brat, I can order my own family around as much as I like and I certainly won't be told what to do by a child like you. It's Your Majesty to you."
"Was. Was Your Majesty. One would think you'd have gotten the hang of the whole not-being-emperor thing by know. Now shut up and stop making a fuss or we'll restrict you to your rooms only. It's a miracle they allowed you the run of the palace. Don't push your luck. I assure you, sir, that I'm just as experienced as most any guard in this palace so do not underestimate me. I am not one of your children."
He could hear some huffing from the emperor and he fell silent for a moment. Andrei wasn't sure whether he was going to respond again so he waited quietly, the little girls still clinging to his legs but now definitely a little nervous of Andrei too. He supposed he was quite scary when he spoke like that, especially in his uniform and everything. In the eyes of such young girls, he might be very scary indeed.
But he had to do his job, it wasn't like he had much of a choice in the matter at this point, he didn't want to be seen to sympathise with the former emperor and his family. That could be very dangerous indeed for him.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- That's right. Alistair's father was no longer the emperor, which meant that Alistair was no longer the heir. He had no command over anyone, no authority, and no right to even be here. Why hadn't they been executed already? Families that were overthrown had always been executed throughout history. As long as they spared his dear sisters, he didn't care what happened to himself or to his parents. His sisters, though, were much too young to be punished.
Once his father had fallen silent again, Alistair sighed and glanced back out the window. This was boring. He was going to spend his last days alive staring out the window and wishing he could just go outside for one more day, wasn't he?
Andrei wasn't the scariest guard here, and he wasn't exactly the nicest, but Alistair thought he was alright. Well, as alright as one of the guards who ruined his life could be. He didn't really blame them, as it was mostly his parents' fault, but that didn't mean that he had to like him, either. He didn't like any of the guards here, not really, but he tolerated Andrei the most. With a frown and a sigh, Alistair pushed himself up to his feet and stretched, not bothering to put on shoes as he headed to the door. He was too tired to go for a walk around the house, but it was better than listening to his father screech.
As he walked out the door, he glanced at Andrei, expecting him to follow. The guard always followed him when he went on his walks, for whatever reasons. Alistair guessed that the man thought he was plotting some kind of revenge plan, but honestly, what could he do? Nothing. Nothing at all except wait for his own death.

Andrei watched as Alistair left the room and he, following protocol, had to follow. He detached the young girls from his legs and went to follow Alistair, keeping a short distance behind him out of politeness. He didn't want to make their lives that miserable.
Soon the two of them had gotten out of the most heavily guarded part of the palace and so it was just the two of them together.
There was a moment of silence before Andrei decided to speak up.
"Uh, I noticed being stuck inside seems to be getting to you. I mean, it's getting to everybody, your sisters are more energetic than ever what with being stuck inside. But I just thought you're particularly struggling. Anyway, I was going to say that there's no rule against you going out into the grounds, so long as I'm with you. If you wanted to."
If he were honest, Andrei was getting a little bit stir-crazy too, he was as stuck inside the palace as the former royal family, and he could do with some outdoor time just as much as Alistair. Andrei had never been told he wasn't allowed to escort one of the royals out into the grounds for a while. Technically it wasn't leaving the palace, it still counted as house arrest.
The young man couldn't help but feel odd; he'd never imagine there would come a time when he would talk to Alistair Levin in an almost casual way. He thought if he ever spoke to him he would be addressing him as the heir to the throne. Not like this.
He, too, wondered why he hadn't gotten the orders to execute the Levins yet. He didn't want to, of course, but he had always thought he would have to. He thought it was probably just a matter of time. He only hoped he could a least save the little girls, the two-year-old at the very least. She was too young, all of the girls were. THey didn't even know what was happening.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- Go...outside? Alistair was actually allowed to go outside, for once? A smile almost broke into his face at the thought, but he fought against it and simply nodded instead. This was the first amount of happiness he'd felt in a long time, no matter how small it was. He wanted to run down the stairs and jump outside, play in the snow like he had for the first time as a baby. However, he didn't, and walked calmly down each staircase, to the door, and then paused. What if this was a trick? What if Andrei was just waiting for him to open the door, so that he could claim Alistair was trying to make an escape and kill him for it? Would the guard really do that?
It wouldn't surprise him if they stooped to something so low. Almost everyone in this country was cruel and petty, except for maybe his sisters, who were too small and sweet to do much harm. He waited for a long before he decided that, if Andrei was going to kill him, at least Alistair would be able to step outside one last time.
The former heir swung open the great wooden doors with a slight creak, blinking as the cold air rushed in and ruffled his hair. He hadn't put on any shoes, or a coat, and wore only thin clothing, but he didn't care. There wasn't much snow on the ground, but it was still falling, and it was beautiful. Alistair stepped onto the cold, frozen ground, picking the path that he knew the best. He didn't even bother to close to the door behind himself. While he might not have smiled, it was obvious how happy he was to be outside.
It had been such a long time since he'd spoken. It felt like it had been years. He hoped his mouth to say thank you but, at the last minute, decided not to. In the end, he didn't say anything at all, just stared at Andrei before turning away.

Andrei was admittedly a little relieved when Alistair seemed to respond to the idea of going outside and so he gratefully followed the other male outside.
He could tell Alistair was suspicious as they were walking through the hallways to get out into the grounds, and Andrei supposed he had every right to be. The rebels hadn't exactly played fair with the royal family so it was perfectly plausible that Andrei would be planning something, though of course he wasn't actually. He believed in being at least fair to the Levins, despite being a revolutionary.
Finally stepping outside, Andrei was astonished that the other male didn't appear cold, but he would be willing to offer his cold if it got really bad. He couldn't afford for one of the royal children to get ill when they were supposed to be on his watch, after all. He'd get into trouble for it, probably.
He watched as Alistair looked at him for a long moment, looking like he was about to say anything before evidently deciding against it and turning away. Had he been about to thank him> Andrei probably didn't really deserve thanks for letting Alistair go into his own garden.
"Your sisters," he said after a moment "they're very sweet little girls."
He thought this was probably a safe topic for the two of them, since Alistair seemed very protective of his little sisters. It was inoffensive, he supposed, though probably very little was inoffensive with Andrei being who he was and Alistair being who he was.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- Yes, they were very sweet, Alistair would have agreed verbally if he felt like speaking. He loved them dearly and they were, in his opinion, his only real family. His parents didn't care what their actions had caused their children, but Alistair cared about what would happen to them. They were only babies. They had their whole future ahead of them.
Shuffling through the dead leaves and slight, slushy snow, Alistair nodded in agreement. Halfway down the path, he paused as he thought, his feet cold in the snow, and glanced over his shoulder at his childhood home. He remembered chasing insects here as a boy, playing with snakes and frogs as a baby (and getting scolded by his nanny for doing so), remembered sneaking off to swim in the creek as a teenager or secretly talking to the baker's daughter when no one was looking. She'd been a sweet girl who, while he might not have liked her as anything more than a friend, he'd still felt anger towards when her and her family had revolted as well. Not that he could blame her, really. His father had been particularly cruel towards the kitchen staff.
Out here, in what used to be a happy place, Alistair could only imagine the horror and sadness that awaited him in the near future. Being emperor had never been one of his dreams, but now he wouldn't get to be anything at all. He would most likely be killed.
After a long time of standing in silence, his feet numbing in the cold, Alistair finally, for the first time in days and weeks, spoke. "I wish they would execute me," he admitted, his voice hoarse from disuse. "And my parents as well. My sisters are the only ones who should be spared, as they've done nothing. But the rest of can die, so this horrible country can trade one cruel ruler for another."

Andrei had first been astonished that Alistair had actually spoken and then equally as astonished at what he had chosen to say, speaking so casually of execution. It was frightening, but in Alistair's position, Andrei couldn't be sure he wouldn't have been thinking of things along the same lines. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of hope in Alistair's future, after all.
"Well, I don't think anyone had any intention of executing anyone at the moment," Andrei replied "And I know that this is just my opinion and the new government probably doesn't agree, but I don't think any of you have to die. You certainly don't deserve to and -- well, we could quibble over your parents. But if it's any consolation, if it came down to it and we did get execution orders, I'd not let them touch your sisters. I draw the line way before killing toddlers. You would be... a little harder to save... but I would at least try"
Andrei had joined the revolution wanting the emperor out of power, that was all, he wasn't advocating the murder of the entire royal family. It had gone way too far for his liking. But backing out now was not an option if he valued his life. This new government was just getting set up so they were strict, killing any threats or opposition without mercy. Andrei had to admit it was probably only a matter of time before this included the Levins too.

-- (( = OOC = )) -- It's okay.
-- (( = IC = )) -- Alistair's eyes looked sad as he gazed at his home, then at the guard, who surprised him with his kindness. None of the other guards would so much as try to save any of them, the former heir knew, yet Andrei was at least willing to try. In the end, though, Alistair didn't think there was much hope for his family. At least, not for his parents, and not for him. That was just fine, though. Maybe it was for the best.
"It's only a matter of time before they decide we are too dangerous to keep around," the young man said, his voice quiet and, while it was a little sad, more accepting than anything else. "When the time comes, I... I would rather you put all your effort into saving my sisters. They deserve good lives. To grow up and be happy." Then, for the first and maybe the last time, Alistair gave Andrei a smile.
A smile, small and sorrowful, one that made Alistair's face seem much more terrified and upset than he was willing to admit out loud. "They can execute me whenever they wish, as long as my sisters live." The words were nothing but the truth, because there was almost no hope of him getting out of this alive. His sisters could make it, they were just babies, but he was old enough to be a threat. "I am fine with dying. It might be for the best."

"I-I will, of course," Andrei nodded "But I want to at least try to help you too. After all, if I save your sisters, they're going to need someone to look after them. They're too well known for me to just take them to an orphanage or anywhere out in the open, they'd have to go into hiding. Shouldn't they at least have their big brother to raise them? Someone to look after them in secret until they're grown up? I can't argue for your parents, they're not saveable, especially not your father. You might be a little harder but I could probably do it, especially if I have your damaged relationship with your father to go on; I could argue that what with your strained relationship with your father, you could end up being a friend to the revolution rather than an enemy. That's a lie, of course, you don't support this government and I wouldn't expect you to, but it might work. Your sisters are the easiest to save, they're too young to even know they're in danger, and of course, I'll help them first. But that doesn't mean I couldn't try to help you, you haven't done anything wrong."
He wanted to help Alistair, he didn't want him to be so defeated. Though of course he understood it. He would be exactly the same and he was even now struggling to see a way out for Alistair. But that didn't mean he shouldn't at least try.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- The words Andrei spoke were true. Alistiar's sisters would need someone to watch out for them, to raise them and care for them until they were old enough to care for themselves. Saving Alistair would be difficult, though maybe not impossible. Just challenging. "If you believe you can save me, I won't stop you from trying. I'll even cooperate. I want to see my sisters grow up happy," he told the guard truthfully, his face nothing but honest. "I hate this new government, but I hate my father more and I love my sisters much more. I'll do whatever I have to for them."
But, there was still a chance he wouldn't make it... Dying was still an option for him that he might have to face. "If... If you cannot save me, if they will not spare me, can you promise me something?" He asked slowly, his eyes wide and troubled. "I have a distant cousin, who lives outside of the country. A kind woman with a noble husband and no children. If I am to die, will you take my sisters to her? She will care for them. I know she will."
Alistair gazed at him with a pleading expression. "Will you promise me this?"

"Yes, I promise you," Andrei nodded "anything to keep them safe. No harm will come to them, that is the only thing I can guarantee you right now. I don't think even the worst guards in here really want to have to harm such young girls, though maybe that's a little naive of me to think. But anyway, I'll keep them safe. You have my word"
Those children were simple too young and innocent to harm. Alistair would be a more difficult case to argue but Andrei didn't see why he couldn't help him too. It wasn't impossible.
At the mention of hating the new government, Andrei nodded "I mean, I'm not allowed to say it, really, but I'm not so much a fan of the new government either. When I rebelled with the other soldiers I thought that we were fighting for a very different thing. We've went from one extreme to the other, and it's only a matter of time before another revolution. I only wanted equality and fairness, for there not to be people starving through the winters while the emperor sat in...well...this palace, having huge feasts. And by doing that I thought we might have to remove him from power. I didn't think it would go this far, that the new regime would be this terrible."
But there was no going back now, and Andrei supposed that was fair. He'd made his bed, and now he must lie in it. This new government wasn't much better than having an emperor, and the price for it could be the lives of the entire Levin family. It had definitely gone too far.

-- (( = OOC = )) --
-- (( = IC = )) -- Alistair despiseds the new government, but as much as he hated it, he didn't like the current one, either. His father was a horrible, selfish ruler who only cared about himself. He didn't even care enough about his family to think about what might happen to them, all because of his stupid actions. All because he was an awful man who wanted to rule an awful country.
Miraculously, as if someone were watching over Alistair, he'd found a nice man who agreed with him. Who was willing to do everything to save his baby sisters. And that was enough for the former heir. That was all he wanted or even needed. "Thank you," he said, his voice heavy with gratitude and appreciation. "Thank you so very much. That means the world to me." It was a bit of weight off his shoulders, at least one thing he wouldn't have to worry too much about.
"You know, I have never learned your name," Alistair admitted, giving Andrei a tiny smile. He held out his hand. "Well, you already know who I am. But you may call me Allie. My sisters do." It wasn't much, but it was about all the kindness Alistair had to offer.
