"I can understand why," he said. "Not that I'm meaning to offend. But Clan cats tend to be vigilant of borders; sometimes a little too vigilant. There are other things in life than simply patrolling. And that will be most welcomed." As her attention shifted to the squirrel, Snowstar nods. "Better than letting it to go waste, don't you think?"

"I'm fine," he said, and left it at that. Snowstar then began to groom himself; might as well do something productive with his time.

Shadowbrook shook her head, the she-cat backing up more. "I'm sure it was." The black cat grumbled, looking closely at the apprentice. "We'll need to work on that more. You won't catch any prey if you can't measure the distance between your prey and you." The warrior grumbled, keeping her temper in check. Her tail was lashing behind her though, and she didn't seem pleased. "No use crying over lost prey," Shadowbrook muttered. Dustypaw held on as carefully as he could, not wishing to hurt his mentor, but wanting to keep on her back. He shredded his sheathed paws down her back, as he would in a real battle with his actual claws. Softpaw's tail dragged on the ground. She knew her mentor was disappointed in her. Aspentrail thought quickly, flipping over and squishing Dustpaw to the ground. She flipped over quickly and held his paws down to the ground, winning the fight. "Nicely done," she panted breathlessly. "But I do have some tips." Dustypaw huffed, the tired apprentice panting lightly. He rolled over and sat, fur ruffed up and dirty. "Lemme hear um," He said, smiling between the pants for air. That had been some kind of work out, not to mention getting squashed. Shadowbrook looked around, her fur laying down flat now. "Let's try and find somewhere else to hunt." She said briskly, "Maybe work on solo hunts before moving onto partners." The black cat hummed, beginning to walk towards somewhere they hadn't startled. She frowned briefly, seeing Softpaw's disappointed look. The cat gently brushed her tail over the other cats flank. "Don't worry about it too much... We'll just need to practice more."

She trails off before taking another bite. She watches Snowstar groom himself as she continues to eat, being silent for once which could be a good thing or not. When she's finished she licks her lips, getting her whiskers as well, and sits up, licking her paws as well. "Thanks for the meal, Snowy. It was absolutely delicious." Roxy says it with a purr, her pale eyes glinting.

"First, try to anticipate your opponents moves and weak spots. If they lean towards the left, even just slightly, aim for the right. If they leap, try to duck under them." Aspe trail set her shoulders. "When you are on another cat's back, try to aim for the sides as well as the spine. They are both good points to hit. Try to think faster and more logically in combat, too. Quick thinkibg may just save your life." Softpaw lifted her head and nodded. She set her jaw and a look passed into her eyes, determined to catch the next one.

Snowstar wasn't all that used to anyone personally thanking him for his deeds, though admittedly he didn't much care to pay attention to the overall feelings of others in the first place. The tabby was quiet for a while longer, then he decided to break the silence. "Woodland prey often has an interesting flavor to it, different than river or mountain but pleasant all the same."

Dustypaw nodded in understanding, the tom's breathing settling back into a normal rhythm as they rested. "Gotcha." He replied, already considering how to use her advice. "What happens if they lean left and I go right, and they actually GO left though?" The tabby questioned, "We both just go and completely miss?"
Shadowbrook lead them further away from the place they had startled away the rabbits, waiting until the sounds of the forest returned to normal. Once she felt they were far enough away, they had stopped in a clearing from the trees. It was quite wide, the grass high and the trees not continuing for a good 50 or so fox-lengths away. The small meadow was difficult to see across through, with the grass coming up almost to the cats shoulders. "Birds and mice are pretty common inside of here. You may be able to find some squirrels by the edges with the trees. Take a deep breath and tell me what you smell?"

Swipe out your paw and scrape their side, move your back legs towards them, or land and kick out your legs." Softpaw took a deep breath. "Mice and birds, but something else. Its smells weird." (could they find twolegs or is that too much of a plot?)

[I am alive, probably.
And if you're asking me, I'd say that them finding Twolegs would be fine. Not like there's much going on in this Clan currently.]

Sounds good with me c:) Shadowbrook's eyes flashed in the sunlight coming down, the black-colored cat lowering down slightly. The warrior scented the air, before raising her tail to signal her apprentice to lower to the ground. "That's Twoleg scent... It'd recent, but I don't believe it's present now." She explained, the cat beginning to move forward. "It's probably still somewhere in the area, follow me closely."
Dustypaw made a small 'oh' sound as he nodded in understanding. Alright, that made more sense. "Okay, understood." The brown-furred tom meowed.

Alright, that made more sense. "Okay, understood." The brown-furred tom meowed. Softpaw immediately crouched. The small apprentice had never encountered a Twoleg before, but she had heard many stories and was frightened of what might come for her. "Are we going to find it?" she asked softly. Aspentrail narrowed her eyes. "Let's try that move. I'll lean to the side, and you come at me, using one of the techniques I just taught you." She backed up to the outer rim of the clearing. Sand was still behind her, so that if Dustpaw missed, he wouldn't get hurt falling.

"Right..." Dustypaw mumbled, taking his stance. The cat leaned towards the left, as if to charge that direction, but decided to go right at the last moment. The apprentice charged forward, going towards the right and raising his paws to lash at her side as he got closer.
"We're going to try and make sure it still isn't here." The warrior replied quietly, before motioning towards a nearby large tree. The black cat made her way quickly and quietly towards and up into the branches of the tree, taking pause on one of the larger branches to wait for Softpaw to follow her.

Aspentrail leaned to the right, putting all her weight on that side. When Dustpaw raised his paws, she stumbled and fell to the ground. Sitting back up, she shook out her fur. "Nicely done!" she congratulated him.
Softpaw gulped. Her stomach fluttered with the thought of meeting a twoleg, then tightened as she realized what that might mean. She climbed the branches until she was perched next to Shadowbrook. "Can you see it?" she asked, straining her neck.

"Thanks!" Dustypaw replied, grinning as he turned back towards her. "I get what you mean though, that's a good move." The apprentice hummed, considering how it went well. Not only would the attack hurt the other cat, he could get them unsettled and fall over. And from there he could probably reach their belly or get them pinned.
Shadowbrook shook her head no, and moved to another branch. She paused for a second before leaping up to a higher branch that was thicker and connected to a neighboring tree. Using her claws, she dug in and climbed up to stand on top. "Stay there." The mentor warned Softpaw, before swiftly creeping through the tree branches and circling the meadow.

Aspentrail flicked her tail. Her muscles ached; no doubt Dustpaw's did too. She tipped her head. "Do you want to keep going? Or should we head back?" She knew giving the choice to the apprentice was risky, but she wanted to prepare him for harder training sessions as he got older and stronger.
Softpaw knew she should obey her mentor, but she wanted to see a twoleg. She quietly scaled the branches and followed her mentor's scent, a small knot of something growing in her stomach. She realized the something was guilt, but pushed it aside and opened her jaws, letting Shadowbrook's small was over her scent glands.

Shadowbrook moved cautiously through the tree branches, the cat following the scent of twolegs. She hoped they had moved on by now, the occasional twoleg that passed through was usually on one of their dirt paths and passed through the area relatively quick. She paused on one of the longer branches as she saw movement pass underneath, and scowled at the sight of two twolegs paused and chattering in their weird noises. She wasn't sure if perhaps the strange creatures had met by chance, but they didn't seem to be moving just yet. Luckily the path they were traveling was a bit aways from the meadow.
"I'm ready to go back if you are," Dustypaw yawned, tired. That had been some energetic fighting, and he was ready for some food. Speaking of which, his stomach began to grumble in need.

Softpaw sniffed, her head high. She heard something rustling below her and paused, seeing the twolegs. They were different than she had imagined, with no fur except the top of their heads and gangly limbs. She marveled at how they could walk only on their hind legs.
Aspentrail smirked. "I'm ready to go back," she meowed. "But you will stay out here and hunt. I'll meet you back at the camp after you have, hmm, four pieces of decent sized prey. Two mice are equal to one bird." she started towards the camp. "Be back by sundown," Aspentrail called over her shoulder.

"What?" Dustypaw squawked, fully expecting to have been able to go back to camp. The apprentice sighed, head dropping low. "Greaat..." He whined, muscles aching from the training they had already done. The tabby raised his head though and with a heavy breathe, dove into the leaves to go hunting.
Similarly, another apprentice was hunting, though she was a bit closer to camp. Stonepaw shook out her fur with twitching ears, the cat ducking slightly under a large fern she passed by. Her nose twitched quickly as she searched out some prey to hunt down. She had been tracking the same squirrel for a while now, the creature having evaded her so far though not on purpose. It had been moving away since the start, but hadn't climbed too high up in the trees before coming back down. Stonepaw stayed ducked close to the ground, keen eyes trying to seek out the prey.
Shadowbrook turned to return back to her apprentice, but her gaze only narrowed spotting Softpaw not far behind her. The black cat swiftly and carefully turned, maneuvering her way over the branches back to her apprentice. "I thought I told you to stay put," She hissed quietly, tail lashing.

Aspentrail stifled a purr, twitching her whiskers. She trotted quickly back to camp and picked a small mouse off the fresh-kill pile, settling down and taking a bite out of it. She glanced at the entrance, wondering how her apprentice was doing.
Softpaw flicked her ears back. "How am I ever going to learn about these," she flicked her tail at the twolegs. "If you don't let me see them?"

"That's not your place to ask," Shadowbrook growled, before the black-furred apprentice sighed heavily. The warrior flicked her tail back and forth shortly, before passing Softpaw on the branch heading back to the tree they had come up on. "You'll learn about them some other time, not right now." Shadowbrook told her, tone of voice leaving no room for arguing.
Dustypaw sighed again, passing through the undergrowth as he sniffed out some prey. His tail flicked back and forth as he caught the scent of a bird, and crouched down to follow it. The tabby crept forward cautiously, making sure not to place his paws on anything that would snap or make too much noise as he rounded a tree and caught sight of a rather fat dove. It was pecking the ground for bugs and seeds, and Dustypaw carefully crept up behind before leaping forward and attacking it.

Softpaw lingered on the branch for a moment more before heading back after her mentor. She wasn't the type to disobey, but she always was willing to learn.
Aspentrail finished her mouse in a few swift bites, settling down to give herself a wash.

Dustypaw groaned as his paws hit empty air again. He had been hunting for a while, it felt like, and the apprentice had very little luck. The first bird had been an easy piece of prey, but since then it felt like every thing he went after sensed him just at the right moment to escape! He had barely been able to catch a somewhat scrawny-looking squirrel as it had begun climbing a tree, but had come up with nothing since. The tabby's head hung low as he sighed, glaring at the bird flying away into the sky. "Mousedung... I must have scared off every piece of prey in the forest by now..." He muttered, kicking at the grass with a paw. "Maybe I can try back towards where I got that dove..." Destination in mind, Dustypaw turned quickly and began to quietly make his way back to his first kill of the day.
Stonepaw's haunches wiggled, the grey she-cat focusing in on her prey. She stepped closer silently, a predator's one focus on her prey. The apprentice took another step, before the quick snap of a twig had her prey raising its ears and ready to run. She cursed inwardly, but now was the time to act or never. Swiftly, she sprung into action and dove through the leafy bushes and past them into the clearing beyond. The she-cat raced through the quiet meadow-y area and leapt forward down onto her prey. The rabbit squealed in terror before being cut short as she quickly broke its back and killed it. Stonepaw began to purr with satisfaction, the cat raising her head, prey in jaws. This was her third successfull kill so far! The first two, a rather fat and slow mouse, and a robin that had gotten caught in the nick of time, hadn't been too difficult to stalk, but she had been following this one for much longer. Confident in her abilities, the she-cat took a deep breathe to see what else she could pick up as she buried her latest kill so she could get it later. Stonepaw paused for a second, ears perking as a scent she wasn't familiar with became apparent to her. What was that? The grey apprentice crouched down lower, approaching the scent curiously.
Shadowbrook waited until the two were back in their original tree before glaring at her apprentice. "If I give you an order, you need to follow it. I don't care if it seems dumb or you don't want too, I am your mentor and that means you need to listen to me." She told her in a serious tone, eyes narrowed and whiskers poised tensely. At least the warrior's tail wasn't lashing, just the occasional sway of the tip.

Aspentrail twisted to groom her back. She had it in mind to wait until Dustpaw came back from the hunt, and then let him rest. She wanted to start working him harder, but to slide him into it.
Softpaw sank her claws into the tree. "I want to learn, and they weren't even doing anything!" She flicked her tail-tip. This was a side of her no cat had really seen, and it was surprising even to herself.

"And you didn't know that until we got there!" Shadowbrook retorted sharply, "Twolegs are dangerous creatures, and if I tell you to wait, then thats what you need to do!" The warrior was growling slightly with each word, her tail beginning to flick back and forth faster. Here she had thought she finally got an apprentice that'd listen to her!
The tabby apprentice scratched at the side of his head, feeling like he had gotten fleas from so much time wandering around the woods. "Just two more pieces of prey, how hard can it be?" He mumbled to himself, before going quiet and scenting out another piece of prey to stalk.

"I can't learn about something if I can't see it!" Softpaw cried. "Being an apprentice means learning how to be a good warrior and fight off any danger that may come to the Clan. But if I don't observe before my warrior ceremony, I'll never know what it is that makes them dangerous! The only reason I know what Twolegs are is because of stories the elders told me when I was a kit!"
Aspentrail laid her head on her paws, resting. Her pelt was shiny and her stomach was full, so she'd thought she'd rest up for what she had planned later.
(I'm gonna have her and Dustypaw go out at night and practice sliding through the shadows.)

Sounds fun and like Dusty is gonna be bad at XD) Shadowbrook fought the urge to smack her apprentice upside the head. "And what learning would you have done if you followed me, and fell out of the tree and broke your back? Or if the Twolegs had seen you and caught you and took you to who knows where! That's why you have a mentor, Softpaw. They go first, they decide if the situation is ready for you to learn, and then they teach you when they think you are ready!" The black-furred warrior practically snarled, fur puffing up as she glared at her apprentice.
Dustypaw pulled up, the shrew in his mouth hanging limply. "Maybe three's enough... I've been out here for forever." He sighed, looking up at the sky. The sun had moved further down, and he didn't think it'd be long before it was dusk. The tabby sighed, and quickly headed back towards his buried kills. Maybe if he was really really lucky, he'd catch something on the way.
