1. Starfish When Shorekit is six moons old, his mother takes him to the rockpool.
The sand is hot underpaw, scorched by the midday sun. Sandstar strides easily across the beach, seemingly unworried by the heat. Some small part of Shorekit suspects that she has spent so long walking this beach, this vast swathe of land that she commands, that she has long since mastered the heat.
Shorekit wonders if he will ever be able to walk so calmly across the sand. In the meantime, however, he keeps in Sandstar’s shadow, hoping it will take the worst of the sting out of the sun.
They reach the rock platform, and he is instantly grateful for the cool touch of stone. The rocks are slick with seaspray, the gaps between them slowly filling with water as the tide rolled in. Sandstar crosses each channel with ease. Shorekit tries to do the same; each leap is easily made, but Sandstar doesn’t give him the chance to try.
He is six moons old, yet his mother insists on carrying him like a kit.
Sandstar deposits him neatly by the largest of the rockpool and settles beside him, the very picture of elegance. Her tail curls around her paws. Beside her, Shorekit hunches, annoyed by her fussing.
“Why did you bring me here?” He tries to keep the bitterness from his voice.
“I want you to watch.” Sandstar stares ahead, her gaze trained on the horizon.
“Watch what? I see the water every day.” He hunches further, curling in on himself, and scowls at his reflection.
“Not the water. This.” Sandstar flashes out a paw. She cuts through the water with ease. There is an easy, liquid grace to her movements, and some small part of Shorekit longs for such grace. Sandstar hooks her claws under some small object and flips it out of the water, onto the sun-warmed stone beside them.
Shorekit leans closer, curious.
A starfish, as brown and as speckled as the stone, sits before him.
At first he cannot comprehend why Sandstar has brought him here, today of all days, to show him a starfish. Jealousy spikes; Driftkit and Wavekit will be preparing for their apprentice ceremonies – as he should be – but instead, his mother has dragged him across the beach to look at a fish-brained starfish.
Sandstar notes the confusion, the disgust, that crosses her son’s face. She struggles to keep her temper even; she has never once lashed out at her kit, and she doesn’t intent to start now, even if Shorekit grows more infuriating, more impossible, with each passing day. “The starfish has many things to teach us.” She manages, somehow, to keep her voice soft and even.
“Like what?” Shorekit scrapes his claws over the rock, resentment slowly building within his chest. It is a dark cloud, as black as the storm-bellied clouds that hover over the horizon of an afternoon, ready to unleash his fury on the world.
“Watch.” With uncanny precision, Sandstar draws a single claw across the starfish, neatly dividing its’ body in two.
“Ew!” Shorekit recoils.
Sandstar sweeps both halves back into the rockpool. “I want you to come back here tomorrow and tell me what you see.
--- Shorepaw tells himself that he only goes back to the rockpool because it’s part of Sunclaw’s tour. Exhaustion drags at his paws, but excitement still churns, hot and fierce, in his belly. Apprenticeship was exhilarating – he approved of his mentor (although he imagined Sandstar would instantly change her mind if she ever found out that Sunclaw had let him practice scaling the cliffs with the other apprentices) and had enjoyed the older cat’s wisdom.
Sunclaw was fierce, pragmatic, understanding.
Everything Sandstar was not.
When he reaches the rockpool, he peers in. Two starfish stare back. Woah.
Sunclaw wanders over and lets out a rusty purr. “Starfish. Impressive, aren’t they? Did you know that if you sever a limb from their bodies, not only does the limb regrow, but the severed one becomes an entirely new creature?”
He didn’t.
--- Later that night, when the moon is high in the sky and the tide is going out, Sandstar asks him what he learned. He pretends he doesn’t care, pretends he wasn’t all impressed, and tells her that if he ever needs to kill someone, he won’t make the mistake of separating their limbs from their bodies, lest they grow back into two separate enemies.
Sunclaw thinks he’s funny.
Sandstar doesn’t.
When Jacaranda is six moons old, her father takes her to the rockpool.
The sand is cool underpaw, stark silver in the moonlight. Osprey forges ahead, padding easily over the sand. Jacaranda finds her gaze drawn to the black swathe of the sea beside her. It is calm, still, and reflects the night sky back at her.
Jacaranda wonders if she will ever know its’ secrets. She follows her father, stepping neatly into his paw prints.
They reach the rock platform. The stone is still warm underpaw, heated by the sun. The warmth lingered, long after the sun had set. She stood still for a heartbeat, relishing the feeling of smooth stone against her paws. The channels between the rocks were deep, the water slowly draining as the tide trickled out, leaving the sand silver in its’ wake.
Her father is tall enough to step over each of the gaps, but she has to hunker down and brace herself for the leap. She jumps – a sudden explosion of movement – and lands neatly, her tail curled over her spine. Her father’s eyes, bright in the moonlight, shine with pride.
They settle by the largest of the rockpools and she watches, mesmerised, as the water eddies beneath her paws. “Why are we here?” She cannot keep the curiosity from her voice.
“I want to show you something.” Osprey smiles down at her.
“In the water?” Jacaranda edges closer, until she is pressed against him. The night air is cool, biting, but he radiates warmth.
“Not quite.” Osprey dips a paw down into the water, gently, as if he is afraid to disturb the glassy surface. Jacaranda watches intently, eyes wide. The world fills with noise as a wave slams against the rock platform, then quietens and sinks back into stillness. Osprey calmly lifts something from the water and lies it on the stone before her.
A starfish, as brown and as speckled as the stone, its tiny body slick with water. She watched in horrid fascination as each of its limbs twitched, searching for water. She silently resisted the urge to put it back in.
She draws in a sharp breath as Osprey runs his claws over the starfish, nearly severing a single limb from it’s body and nudged both pieces back into the salty depths of the pool.
“Tomorrow night, we’ll come back and check on it.” He climbs smoothly to his paws and silently crosses the rock platform.
--- She returns to the pool alone. She’d made her father turn back once his breathing grew laboured – she could hear him coughing, an awful, gut-wrenching sound, like claws over stone.
She settles beside the water and peers in. She watches as the eyes of her reflection go round with surprise. Two starfish sit, side by side, at the bottom of the pool.
She wastes no time in returning to the den.
--- Osprey smiles tiredly and asks what she’s learned. She considers her answer carefully before responding.
“No matter what life throws at you, you always have the ability to recover.”
Pride is the only word for the expression that lights her father’s eyes.
2. Seafoam The sea is many things. It is both a provider and a protector, and enemy and a friend. Above all, it is a thing on unimaginable power. It is raw. Untamed. Formidable.
Shoretail knows, standing belly-deep in the waves, it is perfectly capable of sweeping him away. Water eddies and swirls around his paws, tugging insistently at his fur. He slowly raises one forepaw and spreads his toes, letting the water lick at his soft flesh.
He wonders what it would be like to let go.
The sun rises slowly in the summer; it sits above the horizon, a fiery bird of prey. The sea dazzles below it, almost hypnotic in it’s movements. Something in his chest aches – Shoretail wants to run, to ease the constant itch in his muscles.
“Shoretail!” Annoyance is stamped across Dunemask’s face. “If you don’t stop daydreaming, we’ll never get this done.” The fawn tabby stands a little way out to sea, his body braced against a waterlogged branch. Stormpelt, almost invisible in the seafoam, has his jaws locked around the driftwood.
“Sorry!” Shoretail powers through the shallows, body cutting through the water with all the precision he’d once hoped he’d inherit.
The tide is against them. Even as they move towards the shore, Dunemask and Stormpelt dragging the branch behind them, Shoretail pushing it from behind, it changes, fighting to drag them back out to sea. Waves beat relentlessly against his legs. Already, the branch is too heavy. Already, Shoretail is exhausted.
A wave, larger than the rest and heavy with seafoam, breaks over his shoulders. The driftwood is wrenched backwards. His companions loose their grip. In the heartbeat before it happens, Shoretail knows exactly what is about to unfold.
Pain explodes as the branch collides with his face.
In the heartbeat it takes for him to loose his footing, the sea drags him down. Sand scrapes his belly, then his spine. Shoretail forces his eyes open, yet all he can see is the stormy underside of the waves as they break above him. He twists, desperate to find his way to the surface.
Shoretail has spent his entire life in the ocean, learning not to master it, but to move in harmony. Sandstar, paranoid, had personally instructed him in swimming and diving, yet panic has a way of blurring memories. For one terrifying heartbeat, he forgets how to swim. Terror freezes his limbs; it is all he can do to keep moving, all he can do to pray that he’s heading towards the surface…
Light dances above him. The current slams him against the ocean floor. In some miracle, he convinces his leaden paws to move, and he explodes upwards in a desperate flurry of movement.
His head breaks the surface and he gasps, struggling to draw air into his lungs. He knows he should call out, but his throat has been rubbed raw by the salt. Faintly, he can hear his clanmates calling to him. He only has a moment to find his bearings before the next wave rolls over him.
Seafoam forces its way into his nose.
He has to breathe.
He knows he cannot.
A savage cough wracks his body as the seafoam forces its’ way down his throat. Darkness presses against the edges of his vision, and he is vaguely aware of the stinging in his face and the blood still oozing from the wound, unbearably bright in the darkness of the sea.
He doesn’t know how long he has been under for – the sea is angry, the waves whipping themselves into a frenzy, dragging him down, down, down…
Claws hook into his fur and something, someone, drags him upwards.
--- “I found him!” Stormpelt yowled. The grey tom dives down, only to resurface with Shoretail draped across his broad back.
Dunemask comes splashing through the shallows, forced to swim as the waves rolled in. The smaller tom presses his bulk against Shoretail’s unconscious form. “Good work! Let’s go!”
The warriors make their way towards the shore, timing each stroke, letting the waves carry them ashore. At last, Stormpelt heaves his bulk up onto the sand, Dunemask steadying Shoretail. The younger warrior was breathing – just – but he make a sick whistling sound as he drew each breath, part of his muzzle crushed by the driftwood. The branch itself bobs tauntingly, slowly riding the rip out to sea.
“Come on… come on…” Dunemask rubs the younger warrior’s chest, trying to convince his battered body to breathe.
Stormpelt cranes his neck, trying to peer down the beach. There! He can just make out a small party of figures racing down the beach towards them, Sandstar in the lead. His apprentice, Wavepaw, is struggling to keep up, but refuses to lag behind.
“How did this happen?” Sandstar demands as she skids to a halt, spraying damp sand.
“We were bringing driftwood ashore,” Stormpelt reports, “but the tide was going out. Wrenched the branch right out of our grip. Shoretail was guiding it. Took the full force of it to his face.”
Sandstar tries to speak again, but doesn’t get the chance. Tidefeather, characteristically brisk, shoulders her way through the crowd. Behind them, the seafoam crawls up the beach.
Tidefeather works with her customary efficiently, massaging her charge’s chest. She knows all too well the damage that the sea can do, for it is both an enemy and a friend. She can feel Shoretail’s life slipping away. Come on, Shoretail! She rears up on her hind paws and slams her entire weight down on his chest. Almost instantly, Shoretail convulses and spits up a mouthful of seafoam.
The white froth is speckled red, the droplets of blood bright against the creamy pallor of the foam.
--- He is shoved roughly into wakefulness. Every breath grates against the rawness of his throat. His limbs fail as he struggles to breathe. Sandstar sighs as he manages to meet her gaze; his clanmates watch on with concern, but his mother’s eyes are bright with panicked worry, as if he’d been a kit on his first trip to the seaside, instead of a warrior.
Shoretail sighs. He doesn’t want to be here anymore.
3. Sand Welcome to my page for the Beach Bash Fic Clash, hosted by the wonderful Tuesday. The challenge is to write 31 one-shots, over the course of 31 days, inspired by 31 different prompts. My entry will consist of an anthology of one-shots, featuring the same characters. I hope you enjoy this final hurrah before exams consume my life until October. It’s going to be quite the ride! For your benefit, I have included a list of the characters that will appear in the anthology. There's also a playlist below, because I can't resist, it seems.
4. Waves They follow Shoretail’s scent halfway around the headland before Oysterclaw decides it’s too dangerous to continue. The dark tabby has been watching the clouds gather, and he knows all too well how quickly ocean storms break. He knows the coming tempest will be fierce. The last thing he wants is for his patrol to be out on the rock platforms when the storm hits. If the waves didn’t sweep them off the platform, the sea would drown them.
“But we have to find Shoretail!” Brightnose’s voice is shrill with distress.
“Shoretail will be fine,” Oysterclaw reasons. “He’s had a good head start. He’s probably around the other side of the headland already.” The bay would be sheltered by the bulk of the headland. Shoretail would be safe from the coming storm, provided he’d made it around.
“He’ll be home before the storm hits.” He hopes he sounds more confident than he feels. Shoretail has always been reckless, s if small acts of defiance would make his mother worry less instead of more, but climbing around the headland while a storm is rolling in is an entirely new kind of foolishness.
“I can’t believe Shoretail ran away.” Grasspaw mutters. He vents his frustration on a nearby pebble, kicking it out into the sea.
Palmfeather takes a step back as a wave rolls over the rock ledge. “Who told you Shoretail ran away?” Her voice is coated with a thick layer of disbelief.
“Wavepaw did.”
“Why would Shoretail run away?” Palmfeather rolls her eyes.
“What if he did?” Brightnose is becoming hysterical. “What if he never comes back?”
“Shoretail didn’t run away.” Oysterclaw shoulders his way between the quarrelling cats. “He’ll be back.”
Palmfeather doesn’t drop it. “Why would Wavepaw tell you Shoretail ran away? He’s probably just out for a walk – you know how he is. Something makes his paws itch, and if he feels like walking, no amount of clouds could ever stop him.”
The she-cat presents a logical argument, but it isn’t enough to calm Brightnose. “We can’t just leave him out here!”
“We don’t even know if he’s still out here!” Oysterclaw snaps. “We have to go, Brightnose, otherwise that storm will break with us still out here. Sandstar has taken an enormous risk in sending us out here. We have to go.” He refuses to risk the lives of his warriors based on Sandstar’s obsession with keeping her grown son safe.
Around their island of rock, the waves heave and roar. The wind has picked up, drawing the danger of the storm closer. The sea is furious; the wind skips along the surface, churning the sea into foam. Thunder rumbles along the horizon. The waves are picking up – Grasspaw yowls as they beat against the rock platform, soaking the patrol in spray. Oysterclaw’s pelt bristles as another wave smashes against his perch. “We have to go.” He no longer hides the urgency in his voice.
The coming storm has angered the sea quicker than anticipated. Each new swell drives the ocean further up the shore. They are forced to scramble further up the cliff to escape the rising tide. Oysterclaw forges ahead, eyes narrowed against the wind. The patrol follows, struggling to sink their claws into the stone.
Another wave throws itself against the cliff, dragging at their paws. Each wave is progressively more powerful than the last, the water almost black in the dim light of the afternoon. The clouds creep closer, dangerously low and tinged with green.
The rocks are slick underpaw, coated with a thick layer of salt water. The rock platforms become jagged; remnants of an old rockfall sprawl across the platform. The boulders provide some shelter from the storm, at least, but the waves have swamped the platform beneath them. The only way to safety is to scramble across the cliff, leaping from boulder to boulder, the water churning angrily below…
Making it to the beach is somewhat of a miracle. The patrol forges ahead, ducking through the scrub and into the dunes while the waves drag the beach away. Brightnose lets out a wail of terror as a wave chases them up the beach, licking hungrily at their paws.
The scale of devastation will be so grand Oysterclaw wonders how the beach will survive. Thunder crashes overhead, the noise deafening. The sea heaves and roars, and Oysterclaw finds himself hoping that Shoretail is somewhere safe.
5. Storm The storm had finally broken. Rain whipped the waves into a frenzy until there was no more rhythm, just chaos. The wind twisted around the headland, a living, breathing thing, moaning like a wounded beast. The trees rattled like bones in its’ wake. Lightning flashed, tearing the sky apart. She swore she could feel the ground shake beneath her paws as thunder rolled across the horizon.
Rain began to drip from the sky, gaining momentum with each passing heartbeat. Jacaranda scrambled down the track, almost slipping as it turned to mud beneath her paws. The storm would be a big one – she had to find shelter. It should have been safer, she knew, to stay sheltered in the eaves of the lighthouse rather than scramble down the cliff-side track in the rain, but some small part of her knew that to stay up high was to court a lightning strike.
She would not make her mother’s mistake.
She hit the ground as the storm grew frenzied. Rain sluiced down, tearing sharply at her skin. Lightning flashed, illuminating the bay in a hot, white light. Jacaranda squinted, the pale sand suddenly blinding. She had to find shelter. A gust of wind raced across the bay, bringing another gust of rain – she was soaked to her bones in a heartbeat.
Just for a moment, before the light faded, she thought she saw someone.
Thunder crashed. Jacaranda dropped, caught off guard, folding her paws over her ears, her wail silenced through the cacophony of noise. She pressed her belly into the damp sand, trying to make herself as small as possible. Her heart kicked frantically in her chest as terror clawed its way up her throat.
Another bolt of lightning slashed the sky. She couldn’t resist glancing up again – yes, she was certain now. A long figure struggled along the shore, dwarfed by the enormity of the storm.
Great Spirits! What are they doing out here? She ignored the part of her that sniped; she was in the exact same boat. If she hadn’t stopped, curious, she’d be safe, buried somewhere in the scrub.
The scrub lashed angrily in the wind, tantalisingly close. Jacaranda climbed slowly to her paws, edging towards the safety it provided, yet she found her gaze drawn to the stranger. They were struggling, buffeted from all sides by a relentless wind. Water licked at their paws as they staggered, plunging into the shallows.
Damn it! Jacaranda unsheathed her claws. Bunching her muscles, she began to move forward, slowly putting one paw in front of the other. Sand lashed at her, stinging her exposed skin.
It seemed to forever to get within shouting distance. Even then, the wind snatched away every word she spoke, flinging it out across the bay.
“What are you doing out here!” She struggled to make herself heard.
“What?” The stranger peered back. A tom, she noted, mostly white with tabby patches.
“What… are… you… doing… here!”
The tom simply shook his head. He jumped as thunder boomed, pressing himself instinctively against her side. He was terrified, she noted. So was she, but she forced her trembling muscles to still. Jacaranda craned her neck, eyes narrowed against the onslaught of rain.
Lightning flashed. Thunder echoed. Rain fell.
She struggled back along the shore, her tail draped over her companion’s shoulders. If it took an eternity to reach him, it took another to get them both to safety, the wind trying to shove her backwards with every step. At last, she fought her way into the scrub. She crested a small dune and slid down the other side, sheltered by the dune on one side and the scrub on the other three. Lantana tangled overhead, the purple flowers long stripped by the wind.
The tom collapsed beside her, chest heaving as he fought for breath. His muzzle had been badly broken once, she realised. The bone seemed to have buckled, forming a sharp ridge behind his nose. Scar tissue had stripped the fur from around his nose. No wonder he’s struggling to breathe.
“Do you, uh, need anything?” It felt awkward to ask, common courtesy insisted.
It took him a moment to catch his breath. “No, I’m fine, thank you.”
Lightning flashed. Thunder echoed. Rain fell.
She sat, curling her tail around her paws. “What were you doing out there, anyway?”
Her companion shrugged, his movements awkward in the confined space. “I wasn’t expecting the storm to come in so quickly, that’s all.”
Her pelt began to itch. She had the distinct sense that he was hiding something; no-one who lived by the ocean would make such a foolish mistake. The stranger shifted onto his side and began to groom himself, combing his fur the wrong way in an attempt to warm his shivering body. It was a trick her father had taught her when she was young – there was no doubt the stranger had been born by the sea.
So how could he have miscalculated the storm?
Jacaranda hid her confusion with the ease of long practice. “A foolish mistake.”
He offered her a smile, slightly distorted by the old break. “I know.”
She returned his grin with her own, faking ignorance to mask her suspicions. “You’re lucky I saw you out there, otherwise who knows what would have happened!”
His shoulder relaxed as the tension left his body. He seemed relieved, at least, that she’d stopped questioning. She mentally filed his reaction away for further use. “I certainly was! At least the waves aren’t as big on this side of the headland.”
“True, true. Oh, excuse my rudeness – I’m Jacaranda.”
He met her gaze. “I’m Shoretail.”

Ugh, it does. I had my last assessment today (apart from final exams) and now I have two weeks of holidays to look forward to.
(I also have ten weeks to go until I finish school forever - not including these holidays and final exams in October, but close enough)

I love those movies too. :'3
Haha, I don't know if you will like them. There are more hard rock/punk rock. My favorite songs are Drown and Throne.

Ah, they're so good. The newest one is ok, but not as good as the originals.
Huh, ok. Yeah, I'm not much of a fan of punk rock. I tend to lean more towards 'classic' rock. I grew up listening to U2, Matchbox 20, and a couple of other Australian rock bands (Hunters & Collectiors and Crowded House) since my parents were big fans, and I am too I guess XD My brother can't stand my taste in music - my playlist is a mix of classic rock, some pop music and songs from movies/musicals.

No, you cannot XD
I love U2. Their music is just so powerful. I, personally, consider it to be a great playlist. My latest addition is part of the Hamilton soundtrack. A friend at school introduced me to the music, and I'm in love.

U2 is so inspirational. <3
Honestly, anything Lin-Manuel Miranda touches I instantly love. You know he also helped produce the music of Moana.

<333 I've never seen Hamilton live either. I'm not a huge theater person. I love it, but its not my passion, you know? I don't know the Hamilton soundtrack very well. But I really do like the opening song. I'll have to listen to it so I know the songs.
