Larkdapple, without meaning to, looked up with interest when she realized Rattlesnake wasn't a Clan cat. she'd assumed he was from RiverClan, from his knowledge about fishing. She was curious to learn a bit more about him, so she kept quiet.

Rattlesnake's fur prickled at Larkdapple's gaze. Part of him grew a little nerves at the attention. He turned to look at her and said, carefully, "Larkdapple is a clan name isn't it?" He hoped, he really hoped, that she wasn't from the four clans.

Snowkit watched, her fur hot with nerves.
Silverkit could feel the tension in the air around her. She hoped things would be resolved soon.

From his hostile gaze, Larkdapple considered lying, but decided against it. "Erm... yeah."

"Oh? What is your clan's name?" asked Rattlesnake, his voice careful. He was trying to keep his fur flat. That prophecy would get him one day, but he didn't want this she-cat to find out. I'll destroy the four lake clans. In a hundred years from there creation...Rattlesnake was immortal, so this prophecy would come to play soon. He'd met Mothflight, and been given a power from Starclan themselves. But that prophecy would happen one of these days. Larkdapple could even still be alive when that happened. (Haha, crossover with your character. oops. )

( Things are getting very interesting) "WindClan," Larkdapple replied, feeling somewhat relieved that Rattlesnake didn't seem too disturbed, although there was something in his tone that Larkdapple couldn't place a paw on. But then of course, she might just be worrying too much.

And that did it... thought Rattlesnake, his heart falling. His clan. Well, what would be his clan. He wondered what would happen then. Would Larkdapple still be alive then, to remember him? To hate him? He shook his fur, trying to move back to the here and now. "Nice to meet you. As you guessed, I've heard of the four lake clans." (You should read my fic if you want interesting. Shameless advertising...)

Silverkit glanced at Rattlesnake with concern. He was acting very.. odd... And in the deepest part of Silverkit's heart, she wished Mistkit were out with them to hear what he was thinking.

(I'll make sure to check it out! Is it Rattlesnake Midnight?) "Nice to meet you too. I don't believe I've heard of your clan though." Larkdapple glanced at the kits, to make sure they hadn't gotten bored and were trying to swim or something. She noticed Silverkit's look of concern, and felt slightly unnerved. She should probably be careful in the conversation.

(Yep, that's one of them Penguin. The Game is another. ) "I'm the only one who has ever been near the lake clans territory. I'm careful not to cross the borders. My...clan...lives far away," said Rattlesnake. It wasn't really a clan. Rogues that were together once was what he would have described them as. But he was just a leader of a group. Rattlesnake's group. The group of the Gifted. He sighed, noticing Silverkit's look. "What question do you have?" he asked her. He would answer. He wouldn't like it, but he owed her his trust. That was the only way that they could make a home together.

(Kk ) Larkdapple suddenly realized with embarrassment that while talking with Rattlesnake she'd forgotten about Snowkit. She glanced around to make sure she was still here.

Silverkit's gaze first flicked to Larkdapple, then Snowkit, wondering if she should say this around them when Rattlesnake had seemed so reserved around Larkdapple. As if it was about her being a Clan cat. As if he knew something she didn't. She decided to risk it but ask in a way maybe only Rattlesnake would understand. "What else do the Clans have to do with your group?" she asked. She'd tried to force a tone of innocence into her voice, as if she was only a curious kit, but she was afraid it was a bit too.. forced.
Snowkit looked up at Larkdapple when she felt the she-cat looking her way. She was patient, she really didn't have anything better to do anyway, so she was alright now that the attention was off Larkdapple and on Silverkit. But she really didn't see what Silverkit's problem was. Rattlesnake seemed fine to her. Snowkit shrugged. She wasn't seeing him after all, just Larkdapple. Which she was fine with.

Rattlesnake answered, completely and truthfully, in the most unfeeling voice possible. "I have had hard dealings with them in the past. I met there first medicine cat and one of there first leaders years ago. We didn't get along." He cared, but he had to distance himself from the feelings. "According to them...I will bring destruction to the clans around the lake." And the secret was out, as easy as that. Now all he had to do was wait for the words to hit home.

Silverkit was shocked. The first part of Rattlesnake's answer she could understand, but destroying the Clans? Think of all the kits that would die. And how many of those kits might be from this very Home? Like Snowkit? If she was to be adopted by Larkdapple, she would live in WindClan, and she might not ever get her Warrior name. And it might be partly her fault. Part of that seemed horrifying to Silverkit. Unsettling. But from the tone in Rattlesnake's voice, she knew he was expecting her to react like this. And Larkdapple..? There was no telling what she was thinking right then. So Silverkit managed to croak out a tiny, curt, "O-okay."

Larkdapple froze. She stared at Rattlesnake, unsure how to respond. "W-What?" Did the medicine cats in the four Clans know about this? How long had they known? A hundred questions ran through her mind. What if her home was already destroyed somehow? "Why would - how could you bring destruction to my home?" And what about Snowkit? Without realizing it she'd taken a step toward Snowkit, as if to protect her.

Rattlesnake sighed. He'd expected this. From both of them. He had to start at the beginning. "A really long time ago, Starclan did me a favor. In return I would help the next generation of cats. I promised I would. Then a prophecy was delivered by an outside source, outside of Starclan's control. But I'd still made a promise to aid the clans. So ever since then, I've been staying away from the lake territory." He closed his eyes. He'd managed staying away rather well, but he had broken that rule, just once. That was when he'd been given a power that could possibly prevent all the prophecy had said. "But do you really think I wouldn't have a plan? I would never endanger so many cat." He turned to Larkdapple. "The wording of a prophecy is important. The prophecy said nothing about me killing any cat. Nor does it say that any destruction will be permeant. And do I look like I want to kill anyone?" Rattlesnake really didn't look like a murderer. In fact, now that he was talking about it, he looked broken. His eyes still held a spark, a fire that had never gone out in all the years. "I still have a promise to keep. I'll keep you all safe."

Larkdapple's fear dissipated. However, she still felt a bit unsteady now; so Rattlesnake would aid the clans, but also destroy it somehow. Maybe Rattlesnake was right and the destruction wouldn't be permanent; besides, was the outside source even reliable? "I-I guess. I mean, you're adopting a kit, so you don't seem like a Tigerstar to me." Still, she couldn't stop worrying about her friends and family back home.

Silverkit glanced at Larkdapple as she mentioned her. The kit knew that she had a good point, that Tigerstar would only adopt a kit so that he could twist its mind into doing his will, and Rattlesnake didn't seem like that, did he? Silverkit forced herself to remain calm. Rattlesnake knew what he was doing.

Rattlesnake sighed. When he did this it was always a little embarrassing. "I was given a power by Starclan," he said. He closed his eyes and small stars started to play around his pelt, lighting it up with spots of white. He hoped this would calm the others down a little. "I've adopted other kits over the years. There is Newkit, my medicine cat. He's now called Newsong. I told him long ago we'd find a territory of our own. And when we did, there would be no bloodshed. No fighting." The stars danced like fireflies. Rattlesnake let them play around the kit's paws, and around Larkdapple's ears. "The 'destruction' that I'm planning is my request to have my rogues join the lake clans. Our numbers our so large that we would outnumber the clans 10 to 1. This would 'destroy' the clans, because the number of rogues would outnumber that of clan." He opened his eyes, looking down at Silverkit. "This is one reason why I adopt kits. Many of you came from the clans and tribes. Therefor, you can keep the clan traditions, even if my rogues can't learn."

Silverkit let what Rattlesnake said sink in. She should be happy; she was getting to know Rattlesnake more. But what he said about adopting kits just so that his group could grow in numbers make her uneasy. She'd thought that Rattlesnake was seeing her because he wanted, not so that she could be used. Does he really need me? she wondered.

A shiver ran up Rattlesnake's back. He looked at Silverkit and her expression. "You've misunderstood me, Silverkit. I don't use cats." Rattlesnake couldn't read minds, but he'd already realized what he'd said hadn't been said right. "I should probably ask Newsong to come here. I'm not used to being a father. I can't say what I mean half the time." Rattlesnake's face fell and the stars disappeared into the earth. "I care about every cat and kit I adopt, Silverkit. They become by children. They are loved, Silverkit."

Silverkit nodded somberly, trying to understand what Rattlesnake was saying. He was making sense, sort of, so Silverkit could only trust that he meant what he said.. even if it was difficult to.

Rattlesnake sighed. Honestly, what could he say. He'd promised to tell the kits the truth when asked. He had wanted to make sure they knew what they were getting into. But Silverkit had been the first who had every dug this deep. Newkit, oh so many years ago, had gotten closer to other secrets. But Rattlesnake had gotten to Newkit's secret as well. And it had been a sort of trade. They had trusted each other after that. "What can I say, Silverkit?" he whispered. "What can I do to show you I'm trustworthy?"

"Prove that you won't be killing any Clan cats," Silverkit whispered back, staring Rattlesnake in the face. She knew it was a lot to ask for, and that accidents could happen, but she wanted to see for herself how Rattlesnake would destroy the Clans without destroying the cats.

Rattlesnake thought for a second. How could he prove that he wouldn't. How could he show her? Then he got an idea, and it really was the only thing he could think of to prove it. It wasn't a good idea, but it was an idea. He backed up a few steps. One paw entered the water, then another, until he was standing in the shallows of the water. "I can't be killed, Silverkit," he explained. He swiftly bit into one foreleg, drawing blood which dripped into the water. Then the blood, both in the water and on his leg, disappeared. The wound on his leg disappeared. "That is the bases of my plan." He waited. He'd explain things in stages. Because each stage told another secret. Another risk.

Silverkit tilted her head slightly. She didn't exactly see how Rattlesnake not being able to be killed helped the Clan cats. If anything, it would insure his victory over them, but not their safety. "Okay," she mewed, instead of questioning Rattlesnake, and hoped that he had more to explain.

Rattlesnake wondered how he should go about the next part. Silverkit looked really doubtful. He sat down in the water. "Many of my warriors have powers. But by use of a ceremony taught to me by Starclan I can add to there abilities. I can give them a power that means they cannot be wounded by claw or tooth. This protects my cats from those accidents you mentioned. This also makes them warriors." Rattlesnake took a breath. Dream was so much better at explaining these things. "The plan is to have a few of my cats join each of the lake clans and learn from them. In this way, we slowly get to know them and them us. And basically, we keep adding cats until our numbers are greater then there's. That's all there is to it. No deaths."
(If you read any of the Game, you find out that things do not go as Rattlesnake plans. However, if my timeline stays true, the lake clans only truly get 'destroyed' when the Feline War happens. Even then, very few cats get killed. Greenfern of Windclan turns up in Poisoning the Sea 40 years later and Honeyfeather of Thunderclan as well. Most of Windclan disappears after Rattlesnake turns up. I believe I only had one causality throughout the whole Rattlesnake thing.)

Silverkit nodded as she listened to Rattlesnake. But after a moment, she realized that Rattlesnake had mentioned something she'd only said in her head. Can you read my thoughts? she asked silently, trying to see if Rattlesnake had been listening inside her head all along.
(The Game? No, I haven't read that. What is it? I've read Rattlesnake Midnight though.)

(The Game is the series Rattlesnake Midnight is from. It tells the story in one-shots from The Snake Rising arc to the New Era arc. )
Rattlesnake couldn't read minds. But he was very, very old. He had been around cats for centuries. He'd become a good guesser. "I can't read your mind," he said. "But after living for so many seasons I've come to know the paths a cat's brain usually follows."
