A young man with messy black hair, extremely pale skin, and dark shadows under his eyes sat at a table, an untouched cup of mead sitting near the untidy pile of papers resting in front of him. The problem with poems was that they were unpredictable. He could sit here, with all these strangers and all their lives, and he could think for hours, but as soon as he dipped his quill in his ink the words just seemed to fly away. So instead, he was looking everywhere but the paper. At the people, mostly. Also the food, but poets didn’t get paid very well and today he’d picked mead, so he was going to have to stop wishing he’d gone for something more substantial and start getting the words out of his head. He leaned his chair on its back legs and pushed his long hair out of his face, sighing loudly. This day wasn’t going well so far.

“Amico...!” Mei turned and gave her brother an exaggerated stare of exasperation as he followed her out of the room, and then glanced nervously around, wondering if anyone had noticed his antics. “You’re supposed to stay in your room, remember? I’ll get us food.” Her sharp eye never left him for more than a moment, but she kept shifting slightly, uneasy with being so conspicuous. It was harder to steal if people remembered your face, and two children were less forgettable than one. Not that she could blame him for tagging along - she wouldn’t want to stay in that room any longer either. The two of them had been cooped up for days.

Nico’s breath slowed down to its normal rate as he searched Sam up and down for any sort of injury. Of course the darkness was so complete that he couldn’t actually see the other boy, just sense that his aura wasn’t flickering so much as… discoloring. It was odd, but terrifying, like he was seconds away from losing his new friend, but he couldn’t’ stop it. “You… are you okay?” he asked, not bothering to answer Sam’s question, which, incidentally, happened to be exactly the same. “You… I thought you were…” he sucked in a breath. “Gods, Sam, I couldn’t see you, so I tried to see your life force, which I normally don’t do, but…” in his panic, Nico was stumbling over his words, all of them tumbling out of his mouth at once in a way that they never did normally. “It looks like you’re dying.” His voice cracked, despite his attempt to remain stoic. “Are you okay? I… gods…” he reached out for Sam’s hand in the dark, unsure how to calm his pulse even though it seemed like Sam was okay. “I didn’t look at it before, because… because it hurt to see people dying in that way, and we all die so often in the House, and sometimes people have secrets they want to hide but… I’m sorry, I just… are you okay?” It was like he was a broken record, so overwhelmed by the idea of Sam not being alright that no other words would come to mind. “I just… I don’t want you to die,” he admitted, voice smaller than he meant for it to be. Sam carefully gripped Nico's arms. He didn't want either one of them to fall off the steps and who knew how far down. Then he let go once he was sure Nico was steady, instead taking his hand and giving that a reassuring squeeze before letting go of his hand as well. He didn't want Nico to notice the difference in the temperature of his skin. He'd been breathing, but now it stuttered into hesitant hitches, panic rolling around in his gut like an unstoppable storm. Nico knew. There was a tightness to Sam's throat, something constricting his vocal cords, like a vice like hold. One of his hands reached up, checking the flesh along his neck, just so he could see if there was something holding him or not. There wasn't. All his own fingers brushed was the pale skin which he couldn't even see in this darkness. He swallowed, but it only helped the pressure a little. There was silence between him and Nico. Deathly silence. Sam pressed a hand to his mouth, feeling sick, like he wanted to retch. But what would be the point? It wouldn't make him feel better. Shakily, he pulled in another breath, chest tight, and lowered both hands to his side. He wasn't okay. And even Nico could tell. A hand almost reached out to Nico again, a touch on the back of his hand almost completed. To reassure. To tell the demigod that Sam was still hear even with what he was about to say. But Sam let the hand fall back again without getting close to the place where he could hear Nico's accelerated pulse and all the other senses he had so recently gained were now telling him a living boy stood. "I'm not going to die," said Sam. He wasn't sure if the words had come out harsh or if they had come out as hopeless. All he knew was that he didn't want that to be his tone. But around the lump in his throat he couldn't seem to state it as neutrally and calmly as he wanted. He wanted to cry, if only because everything was too overwhelming. "I'm not going to anything." He let out a breath with a harsh exclamation of air. "And I'm ... I'm not okay." He couldn't say the word. Not the one which so blatantly hung between them. "I'm sorry," he breathed. Sorry Nico had to hear it. Sorry he had to find out. Sorry that from this point on nothing was going to be the same. "I'm ... I'm ... a -" He cut himself off. Then he shook his head once, and the word was forced out in a clipped burst, "- Vampire." Then Sam rounded on his heels, ready to descend. To leave Nico some distance between them, like Nico probably wanted now. Below, he thought he could smell the living room ... Nico listened for the answer, not quite able to breathe until he had it. He didn't want Sam to die, he realized with alarming desperation. He had barely met the boy, but he didn't want him to die. He wanted him to be okay, and he was very clearly not okay right now, and all Nico knew was that there was nothing he could do to help. Yet the way he sounded as he began to talk, that despair... something was obviously wrong. And then Sam forced the word out, and it seemed as though he was expecting to be condemned, to be turned away from and outcast, but all Nico could do was let loose the tears that were building inside of him for reasons he didn't quite understand. They weren't his usual tears of anger or exhaustion or desperation, but rather relief. Relief that Sam would be here for a long time, and, regardless of his feelings towards being a vampire, he wouldn't die today. He wasn't dying for good. "Please don't be sorry," Nico managed after silence hung in the air for far too long. He felt towards where he saw the boy's aura and pulled him into a hug that was uncharacteristically tight and unfettered by whatever fears Nico harbored deep inside. "Please don't be sorry," he repeated, hand digging into Sam's hair as though if he held him close then he could make sure the world didn't hurt either of them anymore. "It doesn't matter," he whispered after a long time. "It doesn't matter what you are, just that you aren't going away any time soon. I... I couldn't bear losing anyone else."

Right. The Inn. Danny shook his head, trying to clear the fog of sleep from his mind. Running a hand through his hair, the young man walked over to chest on the floor and opened it. Inside were wizards supplies: herbs, chalk, a few books that looked like they had never been read. He was somewhat of an opportune magician, never one much for study but had picked up a few skills on his own. He had heard.... there had been some rumor about this place that had slipped his mind for the moment. The journey here definitely hadn't though, nearly a week of travel through dense forest. It seemed almost like a nightmare. He had arrived that morning, or maybe the morning prior, and immediately sought out the inn. It appeared to be evening now, judging by the long rays of sunlight. Sticking a couple odds and ends into his tunic pocket, along with a few coins to purchase food, Danny stood back up, closing the chest. Sliding his feet into his boots, he made his way out into the hall loft. There seemed to be quite a few interesting people populating the tavern tonight. Not uncommon though, they tended to be the social hub of smaller towns. ( ~∂єѕтιиу Absolutely!! Here or elsewhere?)

"Mei, Amico, wait for me," Rex sighed, following the two children into the tavern. The tavern usually wasn't too busy or hectic, but small children were easily misplaced and had great potential to cause mischief. Where Mei went, Amico followed. He would admit, it warmed his heart to see the two of them getting along so well. Mei had always been quiet, and he was glad that Amico made her happy. Amico had taken to them very quickly, though perhaps Rex had his age to thank for that. He was still at that young age where everything in life delighted him.
He entered in time to hear Mei scolding Amico and sighed silently. "Mei," he said quietly, resting a hand on her shoulder. "We've talked about this." Even years later she still seemed to think she needed to get food for them. He did try to appreciate the gesture, knowing she was only doing it because she cared and wanted to make sure the family had enough, but he didn't want to cause undue trouble. Especially since it could affect business at the bakery, and then they really would be in financial trouble.

Markus Alaric: Bartender
A large, bearded man tended the tavern counter where the drinks and food were served. He was dressed plainly, a small brass ring marked with a dark dagger as his only adornment. His movements were confident, speaking to years of experience in this position. While he was not overly friendly, he seemed trustworthy, at least enough to prepare whatever food or drink one might desire.

Hector removed the bridle from the fine head of his bright bay horse, murmuring a few calming words as he then pulled the halter up over the horse's ears, hitching it to the post set up outside for travelers. He'd just arrived at a small tavern, and the smoke gently curling from the chimney carried the promise of warm food. As a farrier, he often travelled from village to village, doing his little circuit of shoeing horses. But the woods had been darker, somehow, lately. There was a good chance the horses, no matter how well trained, would spook. And he didn't want to risk his life or the life of his son when a night at an inn only put him back by a couple hours. He unbuckled a satchel from the saddle, not willing to leave tools of valuable iron sitting out for pickpockets. He looked back, checking to make sure that Sam had securely tied up his horse.

"It doesn't matter," he whispered after a long time. "It doesn't matter what you are, just that you aren't going away any time soon. I... I couldn't bear losing anyone else." Samuel completely froze under Nico's touch. Not because he wasn't okay with it (was he okay with it? Why wasn't Nico screaming curses at him or talking to him like he was some sort of ... animal ...? Was he okay with this?), but because Nico had shocked him into stillness. This was the last reaction he had expected. He could smell salt. Tears were clearly running down Nico's face, but Sam wasn't sure if that was because of fear or relief or ... something else? Something not so positive? But was that just what he expected and not the reality? He swallowed again, the thick feeling in his throat still there. An almost sob hitched his breath and he leaned into the hug just because saying this so much over the past few days didn't seem to be getting easier. And Nico was the first one who didn't feel obligated to be nice to him about it. Who wasn't some adult who had to take in the poor vampire boy found on the street. "Y-you're not going to loose me," he managed. His voice was wet, but his eyes were dry. He was holding in the tears. He wasn't sure he could believe Nico's words about not caring what he was. Maybe that this was all just a reaction to Nico finding out he wasn't dying on the spot. But Sam couldn't face the thought Nico wasn't going to always think that or that he might just be bluffing. "T-the living room is down there, I think," Sam said, pulling away. He swallowed again, then hurried down the steps. He tried not to think about the fact that Nico would just find out what a mistake he'd made for being his friend soon enough. And Sam didn't know if he could stand that. The darkness started to fade to pale gray and below ... the outline of the couches and chairs of the living room. They were coming out over them, looking down.

The door to the kitchen came flying open as a brown haired young man shoved it open with a kick. He certainly didn't look like he belonged there, as instead of wearing what one might expect a server to be clad in, he was wearing some rather exquisite clothing. Balanced on both of his hands were two large wooden plates, each covered in drinks of various kinds. "I still don't understand who in their right mind would drink this swill..." He sighed, stopping temporarily to push the door behind him back shut with a shoulder. One could tell that he was out of his element serving drinks to the customers as he did his rounds, the smile he wore was awkward at best and he was curt with his words. Still, he'd needed the job and was trying his best to provide decent service.
It was also, despite his current stiff demeanor, good practice for when he could open his own place someday. Although he certainly wouldn't be serving this stuff there.

Hook stood up as Ougi turned to him, meaning to defend himself but acting far too late. The next thing the pirate knew, Ougi was leaping off the cart with his coat collar in hand - leaving him little opportunity to safely resist. Trying to hold the both of them back only felt like it would shorten their fall, perhaps landing them under the tractors tires to be smushed into the vehicle’s tracks in the dirt. Despite this, his leap after her wasn’t exactly what one might call willing, more like a frantic step in the direction she was leading him to avoid getting crushed. When he hit the dirt he transitioned into a roll, his shoulder slamming into the earth hard as she forced him down with her hold on his chest. He finished in a cloud of dirt, lying on his back. A strangled wheeze left his empty chest, followed by his choking on the dust. He could hear the girl speaking, but her words were senseless in his ears and he slowly heaved himself onto his good hand. The hazy spots in his vision were quick to blink away, and as his head cleared he could face Ougi with wide eyes. “Crazy bitch!” He wheezed as she smiled down at him. “You should-,” his gasping shouts were drowned by the whining sound of the tractor halting, his now irritable glare turning towards it hard. It looked like maybe he was about to curse at it for stopping at such an unconventional time - but his face fell slack when the machine began to transform. “Bloody hell,” he groaned, scrambling backwards and onto his feet at the same time. “You couldn’t just sit?” He shouted at Ougi.

CloverleafSam had been trying to tie up the horse, but he still hadn't gotten the knot quite right yet. He frowned down at it, tugging a bit too hard. His horse nickered with annoyance and Sam hurriedly pulled his gloved hand away, wary for nips. "Uh, Dad ..." he asked, embarrassed. "I think I tangled things up again." He glanced over the horse. She was new. He had only been (attempting) riding for a little while, and his father was a good teacher, but that didn't stop him from being concerned over just how big they were. He tried to untangle the note, but as he was doing so, he looked over at the inn. He was pretty sure it wasn't home. But then again, his dad's job didn't make many places home. But that hadn't stopped Sam in the end from getting to know a couple people ... some much better then others. He didn't realize he was smiling until he looked back at Hector. The smile was hurriedly wiped from his lips, because wow ... that was embarrassing. He gave a small cough. "Think Nico will be here like his letter said?" He tried to keep his tone nonchalant. It failed in the face of the urge to look ever so slightly soft and dopey at the mention of the name. Samuel was all around hopeless ...

Noah rode towards the inn at almost breakneck speed - the sort of thing a daredevil would do just to prove that he could. He let out a 'whoop' of laughter as he slowed the horse to a soft trot, pulling her beside the inn with the kind of grace that came with years of practice. He dismounted just as quickly, with a practiced ease, and began to tie up the horse a few feet away from where Sam was doing the same thing. He knew his brother would be following close behind, probably paying no attention to the fact that Noah had made the ride in a race. He loved the wind through his hair, his heart pounding in his chest as he rode forward, rubbing at that smudge of ink on his cheek that never seemed to go away. He wasn't as out of breath as he probably should have been once the horse was partially untacked and tied down with enough water in front of her to keep her hydrated after such an exhausting run. "You're the best," he whispered to her with such fondness it was clear that he saw the animal as a friend, then leaned against the wall to wait for Enjolras. His brother wasn't a slow rider, of course, but he always seemed regal as he rode, despite his clear disgust for the monarchy and everything they stood for. It had been too long since he'd really gotten a chance to talk to his brother. He hoped a stay at the inn would give them the time to just be brothers without any judgement from Auguste about his tendency to be relatively irresponsible, or frustration on Noah's part about the secrecy of Auguste's revolution plans.

Being told off by his sister had Myrnin look a bit disappointed, but it was like the disappointment had fallen into a bucket of water. It just became more diluted until he was back to the bouncy child he was some eighty percent of the time. (That didn't mean the moodswings still didn't happen, but the family atmosphere he was in now was a positive and caring one. They were more equipped to handle anything Myrnin could throw at them.) Speaking of bouncy, Myrnin turned around when his dad (and he insisted on calling Rex that) approached. Then Mommy Cham. Myrnin grinned happily. "We gonna get food?" he asked. "I'm hungry." He looked at Mei, eyes wide. It was almost like he was offering her an out for getting chastised. Then he dodged around a table where a guy was writing things down - or trying to - and when to hug Cham's leg. He started giggling, which meant Cham would not be catching a breath. "Who's that?" he asked, pointing at random writer dude. "Who's that?" he asked again, pointing at a person who looked like they were taking drinks around. "Who's that?" And here he pointed at the bartender.

"When you pull tight, it takes away her slack." Hector explained as he ducked under his horse's neck and untied the rope. "She'll want her head free since we'll be in for supper. For a quick stop or grooming, less slack is fine, but too long will strain her." He talked as he redid the knot slowly, pausing so Sam could watch what he did. It was in vain, for the boy's gaze had drifted towards the inn, deep in thought.
"If he said he would be here, then he should be here." Hector answered patiently, tugging the knot tight and giving the horse a pat. He wiggled her halter, pushing the noseband up slightly. It was a minor detail, but Hector had always had a gentle hand with horses that had won him local renown. "Why don't you go in and see? I'll arrange supper with the innkeeper."

Sam's attention diverted back to his dad, looking a bit embarrassed. "Thanks. I'll try to remember that. Your skills with horses ..." He shook his head. Maybe he was a bit pampered there. Hector knew a lot about them and it made it both easier and a lot harder to learn about them himself. It was hard to express that, though he was sure that his father already knew that. "I'll meet you inside," he said, pressing both of his hands together in an excited clap of thanks as he jumped backwards in the direction of the inn. "You know where I am!" He said, hand rising as he raised off to go and see like Hector had suggested. Entering the inn, seeing everything around, he was impressed. There were ... a lot of people. Considering he hadn't seen that amount today or yesterday, it was a bit of a change. He wondered how many of them were passing through. He noticed a small family - which probably lived here - because he didn't think the little boy would have been willing to travel." At first glance, he didn't see Nico around though. Had they gotten here before him? He walked up to someone who looked like they worked here, though he seemed to be struggling with the drinks. The small boy had just pointed to him and asked 'Who's that?' Sam hoped he wasn't interrupted. "Excuse me," he said to drink server. "Haven't seen a boy about my age around have you? Named Nico?"

Henry Ozul: Innkeep
Sitting at a table close to the entrance, a stout man turned through a leather-bound book, quill in hand poised to mark on the page. He dressed well, but not enough to put himself above the rest of the clientele of his inn. Well, not including some of the vagabonds who came to drink from time to time. The book in front of him contained records, people in and out, how long they stayed. A guest list. From the sounds outside, it seemed he would be adding more names to the list soon.

Noah pushed himself off from where he was leaning, watching as Auguste untacked in that steady way he seemed to have. Of course both boys had been born with a fire in their hearts, but Auguste had always seemed more certain about it than Noah did. Noah turned to other people to decide how he should spend his life - he always had. The only exception was when he was riding and when he had one of those rare ideas that was based on human kindness that nothing could shake from him. But those ideas were rare, and the horses only made him reckless at times. Yet his fire could be seen only then, and it was so easily snuffed out. Auguste, it seemed, had a fire that couldn't be put out. "Took you long enough," Noah teased, a grin spreading across his face. "C'mon Auguste, I'm famished!" Yet he waited until his brother was completely done untacking and ready to go in before he pushed open the door and held it long enough for his brother to enter before slipping in just after.

The young man was completely oblivious to the child pointing at him, as he was busy dealing with another customer at a different table and had his back towards the family. This 'patron' was of a rowdier looking sort and was trying to get out of paying for their drinks.
"Do you think me a fool? No, that's exactly what you ordered!" The server snapped, barely making any effort to keep his voice down. He didn't have time for this nonsense, he had people waiting on him. The patron was just about to retort back with a snide comment, but a glare from the server's inhuman red eyes quickly shut them up. In fact, they began borderline shaking in fear as the sight seemed to spark some recognition in them. All they could do was mouth a single word, 'You.' With that, they swallowed down the last of their mead, left behind a pile of coins and bolted from the tavern.
Satisfied, the server swung around and got ready to head to the next table, only to be stopped by a young boy. The disgust from the previous situation evident on his face faded, and his features softened slightly. "Sorry. I haven't." He replied, shaking his head. "If I do, however, I'll mention you were looking for him." Giving the kid a quick nod, he stepped past him and continued on his way.

Vincent entered the loft from behind Danny, exiting his own room at a brisk pace. He passed the man with a breezy pivot around him, casting him a smile as he went. “Evening,” he cooed back to him, not slowing to converse. Once within the bar, he seated himself quickly, summoning Markus with a gentle lift of his finger before looking out towards the gathering crowd. Pale eyes surfed across the unfamiliar faces of the various patrons, suspiciously lingering on those of the children as they entered. The glittering gold decorating his ears was perhaps out of their reach, but that which sat in his pockets, was moved hastily towards his chest. His chin lifted as he regarded Rex, moving on quickly to scan the different occupants of the corners of the bar. Then, feeling as though he’d grasped the atmosphere, he placed his chin in a single hand and rested his elbow upon the counter in a comfortable lean as he watched the younger, and evidently peeved, server return back to the counter.

Rude, mouthed Sam as he watched the waiter go. Honestly, how could he be expected to ... Anyway, he let it go. Clearly the waiter had been given a hard time; Sam could deal with it. "Thanks!" he called after Sandalphon, though he didn't feel the action. Instead, he looked around the inn again. Both of his hands were on his hips. His dad would be coming along soon - with the usual extra wait to make sure the saddle was in a safe place and in eyesight. So, whether Nico was here or not, they'd probably end up running into each other soon. Sam might have been tempted to order something to drink, but avoiding the waiter's wrath seemed like a good idea after the last customer had rushed out like that. Instead, he sighed and wondered to the further corners of the room. Nico liked his space, so if he was going to end up anywhere it would be there. And on the other hand, Sam wasn't that keen on being in the middle of the room either. He scrubbed a hand through his sandy brown hair and gave a low whistle as he made it. Wow. Still seemed pretty crowded in here. But people would likely thin out as things progressed. People had to deal with life sooner or later.

"And yet, I am more assured of a safe arrival." Auguste quipped dryly, though there was fondness in his tone if you knew where to look. His brother was... flighty at times. Willing to smooth over disagreements and go with the flow. If only the passion with which he rode bled over into other aspects of his life. He followed closely on his brother's heels, catching the door and holding it ajar for the man who was carrying a saddle. They exchanged the custom pleasantries before each going on their way.
As Enjolras passed the crowd towards the counter, he shivered, feeling a pair of eyes on him. He turned slightly, trying to cast a subtle glance around the tavern. It appeared fairly normal, if busy. Still... Enjolras continued on with a careful seriousness about him. He waved down the bartender, intending to order food.

"What's the fun in being safe when you could be fighting the wind?" Noah replied, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He caught on to the way his brother was looking at him, but he would be ignoring that for now. He knew he wasn't what his brother wanted him to be. He was oblivious - seemingly - to the sensations that Enjolras was feeling. He felt them, he just paid them no heed. If someone wanted to hurt him, it would come to that later, but nobody here had any reason to want to target him. He was practically invisible when he wanted to be. He could be a good informant for Enjolras' cause, if he wanted to be, because people told him things without realizing he was even there. But he didn't want to be. The inn was more crowded than Noah was really comfortable with, but he was good at blending in. And the more people there were, the less attention would be paid to him. So he watched as Enjolras took control of the order, trusting his brother to get something good.
