(The alchemical symbol for zinc is what Myrnin is referring to. It looks like an uppercase 'Z' with a vertical line through the bottom line of said Z.)
Myrnin brightened at the question and approached. Technically, he supposed for proper teaching, this should have been sitting Matteo down with a book and telling him to read it and then tell him what any of it meant and yada yada lots of stages. But this was also the House. He didn't even have the short timeframe of a human life time. He had a scattering of blinks and not much else. So he simply looked at the label on the flask and said to Matteo, "That's how we used to do things. Combine elements in different parts, break them down, things like that. Do you know the four elements at least? That seems a good start. The point is knowing what things to mix together, but also to just ... go for it." It was horribly oversimplified, but it was a start. "That is zinc, by the way. That's why the symbol looks like a 'z'."

Matteo stared at him with a blank expression as he asked the question about the elements. “Huh? Elements?” He hadn’t learned anything quite like that yet; he was only 7 after all. “Mister, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he muttered softly. He glanced at the bottle in his hand, looking at the label as he continued. Well, he hadn’t heard of zinc either. He let out a frustrated sigh as he placed the bottle back on the table. “This is a lot...” He then gathered up a few more bottles filled with stuff, staring at their labels. “I wanna see that you can do! I don’t want to mess up anything.”

Myrnin arched an eyebrow. Falling at the first hurdle it was. He almost was amused. "Earth, water, air, and fire," he said, answering his own question. "But yes, I can show you." Carefully, he started a fire under one of the beakers. Then he placed about a palmful of powder into it and waited. After not too long, it started to smoke. He looked over at Matteo. "You can do a lot of things with alchemy. It can be quite fascinating. Elements, by the way, are basic components of everything around you. You're made of them."

Matteo listened quietly as he spoke. “Oh, well that was easy. I thought you were going to list off other things like zinc,” he said. At least those four elements would be easy to remember. The boy shrugged and was now staring at the beaker. As soon as it started to smoke, he grinned. “Woah, that’s so cool! And wait, really? We’re made up of elements?” He never heard of that before, but he was rather interested. “You really know a lot about alchemy! But I do have one question: is it dangerous at all, mixing different things together? Because if not, I want to try if you’ll let me!”

(Did a mini graduation and was at school aaaall day. So tired, only just got back. @.@ )
"Oh, it can be dangerous," Myrnin said with a shrug. And he pointed toward the open window. "Good ventilation helps. And wearing gloves. Occasionally things blow up. But I have a good idea what doesn't." And what was non-toxic to human lungs. He passed Matteo another vial. "You can mix this, and this -" another vial "- and these." And he pointed to a few other in turn. "Besides that, I'd leave that to me. But if you want to add any of these together, you can."

(Sorry I’ve also been busy with graduation and such ^^)
“Oh no, I actually don’t have any gloves on,” Matteo muttered, but continued to watch him point at stuff. He grabbed the vial that he handed him, then grinned. “Really? And it’s safe to mix these I’m guessing.” At least he hoped Myrnin wasn’t lying, which he wasn’t sure why he would. The boy grabbed a few of the vials that he had pointed at and mixed a few. Some things he added started to smoke, while others caused the liquids to change colors. “Woah. So, does any of this have any use? Or is it just to learn about what everything does?”

(Such a mood. Hope yours goes/has gone well!)
Myrnin shrugged. "Some do. The main search back in the day," and here he waved a hand around, presumably to mean the perceived time of the room they were in, "was to turn base metal into gold. Or discover riches in general." A small, smug smile appeared on his face and he rummaged around on a table before coming back with a slim stick. He stuck it into one of the vials Matteo had mixed and when he pulled it out, the end was indeed gold. Gold colored, at any rate. "Often it was also just as possible to find out how to create clever fakes. Sell them, to buy more materials, to get further chance to try again. Or we discovered other things that is what modern science -" and here he said the word like it was an insult, "-is based on. Though they also missed out on several things." He shrugged. "At least in my world." He held out the stick to Matteo. "Careful not to touch any of the liquids or powders directly. They can burn skin." Apparently the stick was a glove substitute.
