Orpheus smiled again, plucking the strings of his guitar to ensure that they were all properly tuned. He let out a soft breath, lifting his gaze to meet Eurydice’s. “All sorts of songs,” he admitted, a bit of color touching his cheeks as he considered whether or not to elaborate. “I find that there’s love in almost everything,” he admitted. “It might not be explicitly a love song, but even a song about nature is… well, it’s a love letter to nature, in a way. What is a hymn other than an expression of love?” His hazel eyes held her dark ones, unashamed of the poetry springing from his lips. Or… maybe it was just idealism, not poetry. “What… sorts of songs do you like? So I can play something you actually want to hear.” Zuko was distinctly aware that there was something going on with two of the blinkers, but it wasn’t his business and he was doing his best not to eavesdrop. He didn’t want anyone hearing what he and Sal were saying (even though it wasn’t anything compromising in the slightest), so he didn’t really want to hear what they were saying. Especially because there was something intense about their tones. “Still,” Zuko replied, giving a small shrug. “I feel like… there are a lot of people who wouldn’t think about befriending a ghost, or even if they did, they wouldn’t want to inconvenience themselves to spend time with one. But… I don’t really know that much about friendships, so maybe I’m not the best one to ask.” He picked at the tablecloth for a moment, eyes narrowing as he processed what Sal had said. “Wait… did you say House People? Fisher, these are other blinkers. I’ve met that girl before,” he added, pointing at Eurydice. “She almost got killed by a kid who was a little too knife happy.” He shrugged, glancing at the girl for another moment before he looked back at Sal. “Wait… have you not had any blinks other than the ones we’ve had?”

Touka | Valentines day room | two people without a single braincell to bounce between them |
Touka grinned, delighted as Rex recounted his latest adventure. "That is so embarrassing for you," she said, leaning forward with her elbows on the table. "Where'd he get you? Did you at least get a scar out of it?"

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | Eurydice felt her ears burn red though she wasn't exactly sure why, as Orpheus spoke of love songs. "Do you ever play angry songs? Or sad songs?" She asked, genuinely curious. "I can't really see you doing that. Angry songs, I mean. But sad ones... maybe." She mused pensively. "Dancing songs, if the mood's right." Eurydice snuck a glance over to the tearful pair quietly talking amongst themselves. It was definitely not the time for that, and plus she didn't know anyone here, hardly, so it just didn't seem like the right time. But she did love music that made you hear your heartbeat in your own ears, music that you could get lost in. "Or just... beautiful ones. Ones hands have played many times over, so they flow smooth like... like... setting the table at a place you know. Familiar. Footpath songs. Er, something like that." Eurydice tripped over her words, unaccustomed to spewing poetry like Orpheus was.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room Sal wasn’t sure he knew that much about friendships, either, but he did think that being friends with a ghost wasn’t actually as weird as it sounded. Besides, he was friends with a fire bender, wasn’t he? That would have probably been even harder to understand in his world. He wasn’t sure if there were ghosts in Zuko’s world, though. At least…he’d recognized the word. So there was probably at least some concept of them. “Wait, what?” He blinked, looking up as Zuko continued. “All of them?” He turned, taking in all the people again. The two intense ones at the table, talking in lower, more serious voices. The other two were future away, but Sal could still tell they knew each other just by how they were looking at each other…at least, he thought he could. He shook his head slowly, looking back at Zuko. “No. I mean, I guess I knew there were other blinkers, but…you’re the only one I’ve actually met. I just assumed…”

Touka | Valentines day room | oh no |
Touka shook her head in mock disappointment, following his lead. "Goddamn budget cuts in every corner of the galaxy, I guess," she quipped.
Then, at his next question, she blinked. Then, she realized they were sitting at the same table, across from each other, in a restaurant decorated like this.
Feeling her face start to heat up, she coughed, trying to play it casual as it slowly dawned on her how embarrassing this situation could potentially get. "Uh yeah it's like a holiday," she said, nodding sagely. "It's like, uh, other holidays. Celebratory and stuff."

Touka | Valentines day | well, she almost got there |
"It's a dumb holiday," muttered Touka, barely audible as her embarrassment grew. Why did he have to say it like that??
She tensed a little at Rex's exclamation, completely missing what he had realized. "What??" she asked, looking around as if something might come crawling out from the metal cage surrounding them at any second. "Did you see something??"

“Angry songs and sad songs,” Orpheus echoed, taking a second to think about that. “I don’t often play angry songs, but I’ve had to learn more of them. I sing great poems and stories of battles, but… I always think that those are more sad than they are angry. My crew likes angry songs, I think. It makes them feel righteous and justified.” He gave a small shake of his head, then lifted his gaze to meet Eurydice’s once more. “Yes, I sing a lot of sad songs. There’s love in those, too. Honestly… I think there might be more love in sad songs than happy ones. There’s more of a tangible feeling in them, that there’s something that was worth holding onto that’s been lost.” He breathed out, then gave a small, genuine smile. “I have… an idea of a song to play,” he admitted, fingers settling into place on the strings. He held Eurydice’s gaze for a long moment before his eyes closed and he began to strum. It wasn’t a happy song, but it wasn’t a sad one either. It was a folk song, one he had been learning since he was a child. One every person he knew had heard at least once before. It was the House, so he doubted Eurydice had heard it before, but he hoped the age of it came across in the tenor of the notes. “I mean… I can’t say for certain all of them,” Zuko replied, shrugging a little bit. “But most of them, for certain. House people don’t really interact with each other like this.” He cast a sidelong glance at Matt, then frowned. “I don’t know about that one, but the other two pairs… yeah. I’m pretty sure they’re blinkers.” It was weird to realize how limited Sal’s experience in the House had been compared to Zuko’s. He had met so many fewer people, seen so many fewer rooms… it was easy to forget that Sal was, for all intents and purposes, a newbie. “They’re also not paying us any attention, except to acknowledge that we exist. It’s too human for a House person.” At least… in Zuko’s opinion. He hoped he wasn’t giving the House ideas for how to make its creations more realistic… “You seriously don’t know what all the hearts and stuff are for?” Zuko asked, picking up a small piece of shiny confetti and flicking it at Sal.

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Are they? Righteous?" Eurydice asked. She had a feeling she knew the answer. People who were righteous didn't need angry songs to make themselves feel justified. Eurydice nodded in agreement. Songs for things lost... songs for things you wanted but couldn't have. She could understand that. And that it was about love. You didn't mourn things if you didn't love them. Eurydice closed her eyes for a few moments, taking in the song. Her brow creased as she listened, and then her eyes flew open. "I know it." She burst out, accidentally interrupting his playing. She closed her mouth again, continuing to listen. " I know it." She repeated in a whisper. She couldn't say where she'd first learned it, or from who, but she knew it. What did that mean, then? She searched Orpheus' gaze, her own questioning.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room Sal didn’t really think of himself as a newbie, but he probably was. He didn’t have any other blinkers to compare himself to, except Zuko. Still…it was kind of nice to see other people around, it made the place seem less like a weird pocket dimension and more like some sort of…he couldn’t think of s good comparison. Some place people met and had deep conversations and then never saw each other again. “What?” He asked, looking back in time for the confetti to bounce off the pink part of his prosthetic. “Hey! I mean, uh…” He could definitely feel his ears burning. “Yeah, it’s probably not that important. Don’t…don’t worry about it.”

“I’m not sure that’s a distinction the living can make,” Orpheus admitted after a moment’s thought, searching Eurydice’s gaze. “I’m sure there are good people who have gone down in history as the worst sort, if only because they lived in the wrong place at the wrong time. History may very well see my crew as heroes, but if you were to ask me…” he hesitated, not wanting to speak ill of the same men who had, on occasion, saved his life. “They are not as righteous as they believe they are.” Orpheus let himself turn back to the song, not even needing to look at the guitar as he played through the familiar melody. It was one of the first songs he had learned to play, if only because it was one of the first songs he had ever heard. The melody dissipated, a note that had been played just a little too sharp hanging in the air as Orpheus stopped abruptly, gaze fixed on Eurydice. “You… know it?” He repeated, eyes wide with amazement. “I… I’m from Thrace. Near Pimpleia,” he said suddenly, the words coming out in a rush. “Does that… does that exist in your world?” “So you do know!” Zuko announced triumphantly, grinning as he searched Sal’s eye for some confirmation that he was right. He didn’t know why Sal didn’t want to tell him (the decorations seemed fairly innocuous, but so did Azula, when she wanted to), but he figured his friend probably had a good reason. Maybe it had something to do with the weird cage over all of their heads. Would it stop them from getting out if they really tried to run? “See, now I really want to know,” he added, lining up another piece of confetti to flick at Sal. “You should tell me. As long as it won’t get us both killed or something.”

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room “Hey!” Sal protested again, though he couldn’t quite keep the hint of laughter from it this time. “Okay, yeah, so maybe I have a guess, but that’s not the same as knowing. It’s just… probably the same.” He reached without looking, trapping a piece of confetti under his thumb and cocking his head just a little at him. “Anyway, it’s about time I had inside information about the House that you don’t. My turn to look knowledgeable and impressive here.” He knew he could say no and mean it, and he knew Zuko would drop it if he did. But…something held him back.

“Oh, can it Fisher!” Zuko replied, a hint of amusement in his own voice. He didn’t know what it was about Sal that made him feel okay acting a little bit more like a kid. He never felt safe talking in such a manner outside of his conversations with Sal, but it just felt… okay when the other boy was there. Like he didn’t have to worry too much about being a prince or a leader. “You’ve known about all sorts of stuff I haven’t. I mean… the video games, for one, and… okay, well mostly the video games. But everything in that room was foreign to me. So don’t act like this is the first time you’ve known stuff!” If they had still been in the sleepover room, Zuko would have hit Sal over the head with a pillow. Instead, he settled for flicking a third piece of confetti at him, trying to get it stuck in his pigtail. “Besides, I never said you weren’t knowledgeable or impressive,” he mumbled, cheeks turning just a little bit pink.

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | Eurydice nodded thoughtfully. That was true, who were they to say? But Eurydice thought that there were far fewer righteous people in the world than people generally thought there were. "Exist? That's where I'm from!" She answered. The sharp note hung in the air like an unanswered question. She hummed the corresponding note, rough and quiet in her throat. "I thought that everyone in the House was from different worlds..." But it made sense. Orpheus had a name that sounded closer to her own world's names than the other names she'd heard. He dressed more similarly. And he knew a song that she knew. If she was going to choose anyone from the House to be in her world, she'd probably choose Orpheus.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“That was one room!” Sal pointed out, doing his best to sound like he wasn’t making it up as he went. “And anyway, you won the pillow fight, and you didn’t lose the video game, so apparently that doesn’t count either!” He was ready this time. He reached out, batting the confetti out of the way and doing his best to send it flying back towards Zuko instead, a mischievous light playing in his eye. “Sorry, what was that?” He added innocently. “I think maybe there was confetti in my ear…did you say something?”

“You’re from Thrace?” Orpheus repeated, eyes growing much wider than they had been even a moment before. “I mean… I’ve never met anyone from Thrace here! Or anywhere in Greece, really! I know someone who’s from what’s possibly from my world… or maybe our world… but very far in the future, but…” he grinned, searching Eurydice’s eyes and resisting the urge to put the guitar aside, pick her up, and spin her around. It was only the fact that they were both seated that stopped him. “I just… wow…” he let out a huff of breath, the smile on his face open and surprised. “Is… is it bad that I want us to be from the same world? If only so… so I could have a chance to find a flower as beautiful as these in the fields beyond the town and give it to you?” Zuko sorted as the confetti came flying back towards him. He met Sal’s gaze for just a moment before he lit a small fire in his hand, the heat from the flames lifting the confetti back up and sending it towards Sal (with the least risk of burning him Zuko could manage). If all went well, the confetti wouldn’t even be warm to the touch. “You know perfectly well what I said,” he replied, unable to tear his gaze away from Sal. “You just wanna hear me say it again.”

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | striderSal watched the confetti flip obediently back towards him, the warmth of the fire pushing it into the air. He waited patiently for it to flip back down before he reached out, catching it in one hand, and then reaching to try and drop it directly into the flame before Zuko could stop him. “And…what did I hear you say?” He asked, cocking his head. “Something about…?”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | Knowing that Orpheus was in her world too... it was exciting, it was nice, knowing someone as kind and optimistic as him was in her world. But it also made this whole thing more real, in a way. Not just some whole other dimension that may or may not be real. Her expression was one of wonder. From what Orpheus said, people being from the same world was rare. So why where they both from the same one? Did the House think that their world was particularly interesting? "I don't think it's bad- I think it's, uh." She was blushing now, actually blushing. She ran her fingers down a lock of her hair self-consciously. "That's so mushy." She said. Not in a mean way, or a dismissive way. She just simply didn't know what else to say.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“Ha!” Sal gave a triumphant laugh as the confetti disintegrated. “That’s what you get for involving your magic fire powers in a game with flammable objects.” He could tell the room was making it hard not to explain it on purpose. And a part of him wanted to explain, or at least he thought maybe he did, but…like this? When there was a sort of implication he couldn’t avoid making? They were so comfortable as they were now. If he explained what the House was trying to do…well. Even if he left out why it might be doing it, it wouldn’t be that hard to guess. “Yeah…not letting you have it that easy,” he said after a moment, resting his chin on his knuckles and raising his eyebrows at Zuko. “Guess.”

“Involving bending made it cool, you’re just too proud to admit it,” Zuko teased lightly, letting the ashes of the confetti drift down to the ground as he looked up at Sal. “Guess?” he asked, looking around the room with his brow arched in a way that made clear how incredulous he was. “It could mean literally anything. I’ve never even seen a shape like that before. And I’m willing to bet the red doesn’t represent the Fire Nation.” He reached up and touched one of the hearts dangling from the ceiling, then let his gaze drift back down towards the table. He had ignored the glossy paper-thing lying on top before, but it seemed that was the most likely thing to help him guess. “Valentine’s Day Lunch Menu,” he read, brow furrowing as he looked at it. “What the heck is Valentine’s Day?”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "I don't mean it's bad." She added as he awkwardly scratched at his neck. "Just unexpected." "I like flowers." Eurydice said slowly. It was honest, tentative. They were soft, sweet, and colorful. What wasn't there to like? "I've never seen this kind before, though." She said, pulling one of the pink roses from the vase. She'd seen similar-ish ones before, but never quite like that one. There was something artificial about it, and even when she raised it to her nose it had little scent. Its delicate petals were as soft as velvet, though. "What's your favorite flower?" She asked.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | striderSal had been hoping there would be some connection between what the hearts meant in his world and what they would mean to Zuko, but from the way Zuko was looking around the room…it seemed that wasn’t happening. He could explain the room without mentioning why they were there. But really…how long would it take Zuko to figure it out? As far as he could tell, everyone else had already split off into pairs, and the two he could see well looked like they were probably doing better so far. “What?” He yelped, turning sharply back as Zuko spoke. “That’s…oh!” He hadn’t even noticed the menus, he’d been too distracted by everything else. Now that he had help from the room, he wasn’t sure he wanted it anymore. “Involving bending was cheating,” he said instead, choosing the safer topic at the last second.

“Oh,” Orpheus replied, his blush growing just a shade deeper. He didn’t know for sure why he cared so much about what Eurydice thought of him, but he found he did care. He wanted to make her happy. He wanted her to like him. He wanted to bring her flowers and know that she would enjoy them instead of thinking them weird. He had never been very good at making friends or navigating relationships, but he desperately wanted to make this one work. “I’m glad,” he whispered, fingers dusting over the strings of his guitar. “I guess… I really like carnations, but it’s hard to pick a favorite. I honestly really like some of the flowers that just grow by the side of the road, because so many people see them. They have so much power to remind people of spring, to make people smile, and… and so many people just walk past them every day because they seem normal. They’re not normal, they’re… extraordinary.”
“Are you okay, Fisher?” Zuko asked sharply, brow creased forward. As far as he was concerned, they were having fun here, even if Sal didn’t want to tell him why the room was decorated the way it was. Or what Valentine’s Day was. The way Sal had yelped felt almost… more serious. He was definitely avoiding the subject, and Zuko had the sudden urge to both stop pushing and figure out exactly what it was about Valentine’s Day that was so bad. He had a feeling that the two tasks couldn’t be done at the same time. “You’re changing the subject,” he noted, but he didn’t make an attempt to change it back (yet). He needed to check and see exactly how bothered by it Sal was before he pushed any further. “But you could have like… I dunno, blown it back to me or something. No harm in using a skill I have. Plus, you have to admit that it was pretty cool.”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | The strings of his guitar made an almost unnoticeable hum, not quite music, just the ghost of a tune. Eurydice nodded. Orpheus' favorite flowers- the common ones on the side of the road, the ones that brightened people's days- were in line with everything else she knew about him so far. She nodded thoughtfully, brushing her thumb over the silky petals. "It's been a while since I've seen a good warm spring." She commented. "Seems like it just stays all slushy and muddy, then goes right into summer."
