There was a decided chuckle from the Doctor. "No, no. I'm called the Doctor. And while it might be a title, it is still what I'm called." She didn't seem concerned about whether or not that particular statement would be understood. It seemed to her like that was exactly what she intended to say. But she did brighten. "Oh? Do you speak something other than Japanese then?" It had her curious, that was for sure. About who Asami was an the like.

Nico was fairly certain that the House would make them do its strange activity at some point, but until it did… he was content to stay here, even if it meant laying on grass that he had killed unintentionally. Well… Sam worried about being a monster, but at least he didn’t bring death around everywhere he went. That, it seemed, was Nico’s job. He gave a quiet sigh, shifting so he could see Sam a little bit better. “Maybe we can get a better look at the shapes when we decide to go up there,” he murmured after a long moment, feeling his heart twist in his chest at the idea of going so far up high. He didn’t like heights at all, but there was no Zeus here. And like Kelsier had shown him, there was no reason to be afraid. It would be fine. “But… for now, yeah. I think I’d like to stay here,” he admitted, relief crossing his expression. “I’m glad you have a place to stay, though. Even if there’s other stuff going on.” Guilt squirmed in Nico’s stomach. He hadn’t seen Sam since he had set off on the quest that was probably going to be the death of him. He didn’t want to tell him, not know. He would… he would tell him soon. Probably. Samuel flopped against the dead grass, rolling onto his side to look at Nico. It might have seemed like the grass was not the best place to lie, but Sam didn't seem to mind. Instead, he seemed content enough to look at Nico as he talked, arm propped up under his head. He did glance up at the sky again, noting that Nico's heartbeat was a nervous thump thump. "I can make sure you're safe," Sam said softly. Then he hoped that wouldn't wound Nico's pride or anything. It seemed like a possibility, but it wasn't one that Sam wanted to run into. He glanced away, down at the grass instead. "I've ... I think I've met some nice people. Though they're very, very odd," he said. Mostly as a way to change the subject at this point, in case Nico didn't want to talk about himself. "But there's a lot of ... a lot of cool things to do."

Orpheus shook his hand out almost immediately after it made contact, eyes glittering as he watched Hook. As he waited for him to let go of L. He didn’t know what he felt towards Hook, just that he hated the position he had put L in, hated the way he was abusing the fact that he was the strongest one here. He was exactly the sort of person Orpheus usually tried to reason with, but he had learned fairly quickly that there was no reasoning with Hook. He had tried… perhaps he hadn’t tried hard enough… And then L started to fall and every reasonable thought left Orpheus’ head as he moved forward, breaking his fall and hopefully keeping him from hurting himself. He wasn’t thinking about Hook or Czeslaw, just about L. He had never seen anyone look that scared, and in a way… in a way, this was his fault. If he hadn’t decided to try to ease the tension with music, Hook never would have attacked, and L wouldn’t be looking moments away from dying. Orpheus didn’t know what to believe, honestly. He looked up, cradling L’s body protectively close. He still remembered what L had told him in their previous room. That there were only two people he trusted, and somehow… Orpheus was one of them. He may have been the reason he was laying there now, but he wasn’t going to let any more harm come to his best friend. “It doesn’t matter whether you were going to drop him or not,” Orpheus managed, voice rougher than even he was prepared for. “It matters that you didn’t.” The overly trusting part of Orpheus, the part that wanted to believe that people wouldn’t lie to him, that people always acted with the best intentions, was convinced that Hook would have dropped L. That Czeslaw likely underestimated him. But that didn’t matter… whether L had been dropped or not, he had still been subjected to something that clearly terrified him, and it wasn’t right. He wasn’t sure what Czeslaw was doing, but if it gave L more time to recover… well, as long as neither he nor Hook got hurt, it was probably alright. Probably.

“I see where you’re coming from,” Orpheus mused, glancing back down at the blanket as he smiled. It was a more practical take on it, but he saw how it made sense. “I think if I were to start a new hobby, though, I would still like some sort of tangible proof of my improvement. If you make things, you’re bound to create a lot of not very nice things at the beginning… so maybe the potter should fire the very first one that isn’t usable, but reuse the clay for the rest of them until he gets better at making ones that are actually practical to use. Every day he can look at the one that isn’t very usable and see how far he’s come. He’ll have something to show for his efforts.” Orpheus tied a few more strings, considering that as he listened to Eurydice’s question. “I don’t know,” he mused, stopping his work to meet Eurydice’s eyes. “I’d like to believe it creates… I mean the moment we’re in, is it created by us, or by the House, or is it a trio by the three of us? As for the blankets… no, I suppose they’re not very personal at all.”

Nico | Playground Obstacle Course | dawn Nico twisted his body in space to make sure that Rae was, in fact, following. His expression lightened as her presence confirmed it, and he managed to turn himself around to keep going. “This reminds me of stuff they have us do in camp,” he told her, sounding lighter than he had in a long time. He was facing something extremely dangerous in his world, but somehow it didn’t matter if he got to do another room with Rae. He remembered the days when he had thought she was dead. He remembered not knowing, and he remembered mourning her just in case. There wasn’t enough time to recover. Only… now he didn’t have to. “You doing okay?” he called back, aware that he was probably far more used to activities like this than Rae was.

Nico shifted just a little bit so he could see Sam better, but he couldn’t help the warmth that spread through him as he noticed that Sam hadn’t shied away from the dead grass. He knew that Sam was ashamed of what he was, but he wasn’t the type that just… randomly killed things. When Nico got upset, on the other hand, when he was tired or upset, when things weren’t going his way, things tended to die. Between the two of them… well, there was one very clear monster in Nico’s eyes. And it wasn’t Sam. “Oh,” Nico replied quietly, eyes widening in surprise. He wasn’t used to people watching over him. He wasn’t used to people caring enough to try. There were people in the House he knew would, but for some reason he hadn’t expected it from Sam, even if they were friends. “Thank you,” he murmured, falling silent as he listened to Sam’s voice. It was a lot easier than thinking about his world. “Like what?” he asked distantly, hoping that Sam might have some stories to share.

Hook - Amplifier Room
The pirate shook his head lightly, trying to bypass the extreme feeling of discomfort that had suddenly washed over him. Perhaps that kick to the head had done something to him...perhaps it was the fact he’d almost lost all his progress in the House without even thinking about it. “The [oops] do you know?” He snapped at Czes to quickly shut him up, then gestured to the coughing body with his good hand. “He’s fine now ain’t he?” He seemed distracted as he finished speaking, looking around the room again. What was so off about it? Why did everything that had happened seem so hazy? He started to step closer when the kid started shouting threats at him, which caused his irritation to return. He was trying to figure this out, he didn’t need the emotions of others slowing down his progress. Without waiting for Czeslaw to finish he unsheathed his sword and pointed it at him, a good two feet between the point of the blade and the other blinker. “I’d like my odds in that fight,” he hissed, pausing to see how the immortal reacted. In truth, he could’ve walked away by now and continued to hunt for clues, but something was so easy about keeping his ground. There was something too tempting about seeing the others back down, even when his priorities were somewhere entirely different. It was a feeling of stubbornness and self preservation that he’d been combatting in the House for a while now...what was so different with these people? In this room?

Asami | Living room | mintedstar/fur |Asami considered this for a moment. This person's name was The Doctor, which was a title, not a name. So, could titles be considered names at times? And was this person a doctor, or was that just their name? "How do you tell the difference between a title and a name?" she asked, her eye wide and curious as she continued to stare at the Doctor. Then, as she registered the second question, she moved her eyestalk from side to side, mimicking a head shake. "No. I have only been alive for six months, so I have not had time to learn an additional language."

Czes - amp room - Orpheus, L, Hook
It was clear now that L and Orpheus were indeed close. That would explain why L had acted out in Orpheus's defense. Still, Czeslaw didn't have an explanation for why he himself acted out. He had no attachment to these people. He had just been... angry. He was still angry.
"A lot more than you think," Czes countered. 'He's fine now' was not a phrase he understood. He had heard mortal people could have lasting effects from something like that, so he couldn't really say whether L was all right or not. He wanted to sympathize with the detective. To focus on helping him recover, rather than giving the pirate any more attention than he deserved. He liked to think he had become a better person that way, after meeting Isaac and Miria. Ennis and Firo. But Hook wasn't the only one going back to old habits. The kid didn't so much as flinch when the weapon was drawn and pointed toward him. Anywhere else in the Paradox House he would have agreed with Orpheus, that at least the focus wasn't on L anymore. But here, he didn't give a damn about L.
And so Czeslaw stood his ground and welcomed the sword, reaching forward and gripping it in one hand to veer its aim away from him. The blade was against his fingers, but fingers he didn't care about. It was better than having it pointed at his chest like that. "You wouldn't hurt a child," he reasoned with him. "Really, you shouldn't be hurting anybody here." And then he narrowed his eyes, giving Hook a knowing look. "You wouldn't go back on all your progress," said Czes.

L flinched badly as warm arms caught him and lowered him gently, but he didn’t try to pull away. No one had caught him before. The action was so at odds with the memory of sand and blood that he could barely comprehend it. He was trembling all over, convinced he was dying even now that air was available to him, half sure he was in the arena again after all. Nothing felt quite real at the moment, and at the same time he could taste the bloodstained air as he breathed, pulling the air in in too-fast gasps and letting them go before he had a chance to use the oxygen he craved. Slowly, he realized it was Orpheus who was holding him protectively now, and it was Hook and Czeslaw who were still talking. He leaned into Orpheus’ embrace like it was the only thing keeping him alive. It might have been. He was shaking as hard as he had after the blizzard room, after all. There was ice in his veins. He couldn’t get warm. He managed to open his eyes a moment later, in time to see Hook point the sword at Czeslaw. Everything in him burned white hot at the sight of it, at Czeslaw facing him down, unarmed. He didn’t know how much damage the sword could do the kid, and he wasn’t really thinking clearly enough to consider it much. Hook was more then capable of killing someone, even a kid. L had no doubt about that. He tried to push himself up, but his body refused to hold him. Everything hurt - he felt sick and shaky and the wrong temperature and he still couldn’t breathe, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t breathe.

“Hey,” Orpheus murmured, voice soft as he gently ran a hand through L’s hair. He knew L had said that him messing with it in the snow room had increased L’s cognitive abilities, so he hoped it would help here, too. It wasn’t long enough to do anything but muss it around a little bit, but anything that would help L was worth it, in Orpheus’ eyes. He breathed in, humming loud enough for L to hear it but softly enough that the other two wouldn’t be bothered by it. That seemed like the best compromise he could make in this situation. Orpheus hated that they were still fighting. He hated how unfair the odds were, hated that Hook could very easily kill the kid. If he could, he would try to stop the violence entirely, but if he couldn’t do that… the least he could do was make sure the boy wasn’t slaughtered. “Shh,” Orpheus whispered to L, hand gentle as he pressed him back down. “You focus on recovering. Don’t stand until you’re ready to.” He didn’t know how long that would take, but he would try to ensure L had the chance to recover before he had to get up and face the rest of the room. The issue was that Czeslaw was still unarmed. Everything in him screamed to deescalate the conflict, to make sure nobody got hurt, but his attempts to stop the fighting had led to L gasping on the floor. He had made mistakes in his attempt to keep the peace. In his mind… there was only one option. The only way to ensure that the fewest number of people got hurt was to give Czeslaw the best chance at winning a potential fight. L didn’t carry weapons. If Czeslaw had a knife, he would have pulled it out right now. Which meant… of the three of them, the only one that had a useable weapon… it was a hard decision, but it was also no decision at all. He wasn’t going to let Hook hurt Czes. Wordlessly, Orpheus pulled the guitar off over his shoulder and slid it across the floor towards Czes as best he could. It wasn’t much, but Orpheus figured it would be capable of providing Czes some safety, and maybe even the ability to fight back.

Hook - Amplifier Room
Hook kept his eyes locked on Czeslaw, trying desperately to get a read on the immortal. In the limited interactions he’d had with him, Czes always seemed passive - or at least methodical. It was unlikely he didn’t have some sort of plan, but what was he playing at? The pirate scoffed at his first choice of words, but narrowed his eyes at he went on. “You don’t know shit about what I would or wouldn’t do,” he bluffed almost instinctively. He glanced at his sword right as the words left his mouth, considering them. He dealt didn’t want to lose his progress, but he could hardly tell which way Czes was trying to bait him. Surely he was being baited? If he let himself lower his guard then the others in the room had plenty of reason to turn on him at any moment - if he kept his stance offensively then he was only risking digging himself a deeper hole. Either way, he was going to be in danger.
His gaze flicked towards the instrument as Orpheus slid it across floor, tension returning in his stance as he took a defensive step forward. His blade was once again held ready towards Czeslaw’s chest, the look of a cornered animal in his eye as he waited for the immortal to make a move. Should Czes grab for the ‘weapon’ he’d have no choice but to defend himself before it was too late. He needed to keep himself alive and conscious before he could worry about any abnormalities in the others or himself.

Czes - amp room - hook, orpheus, L
Even though he had known L was injured, he had underestimated the detective's ability to recover. And Orpheus was busy tending to him, unable to help in a fight either. So maybe the odds weren't as against Hook as Czeslaw had thought.
He still kept the blade within grasp, using that one arm to fight Hook's aim toward his chest. He was surprisingly strong; even kids had a certain capacity for leverage with their arms and legs, after all. A bead of red emerged from within his grip. Then several more. They finally cascaded down onto the floor in a single droplet of blood. There would be no sign of healing until he released his grip though, and maybe even until he was out of danger. "I know enough," he affirmed. "You thought you'd changed, but you know deep down there's always going to be something telling you to do it. Other people have that too, you know, telling them to hurt themselves, hurt other people... A voice." Czeslaw didn't mean to continue past the first three words, but it had spilled out. He tightened his grip even though he hadn't needed to. It wasn't from fighting Hook's aim anymore, but because he was too busy talking to notice what he was doing.
"But there's a difference. For them, it's a passing impulsive thought. They just want to try, see what it feels like. For us, it's our voice. It's who you are. So why would it go away with a little flimsy reformation?" He said it quickly, berating. He could feel emotion welling up inside him, but stopped short of crying. What he did next, he would have to have pretty good aim for, but the strength part he knew would work. A certain capacity for leverage... He half-jumped as he swung his leg into motion, not particularly graceful but getting the job done as he kicked Hook's half of the sword with tremendous force from one side. It really was like a lever because his hand was still gripping his end, getting sliced in the process but not letting go. If he was lucky, it would tear the weapon out of Hook's hands and bring the blade to the floor, and Czeslaw was already lunging to follow its path and take it. If he was unlucky, it would only put Hook off his balance.

L drew in a breath as Orpheus’ hand went through his hair, brushing through it. He couldn’t braid it now - it was much too short, a fact L had never resented more - but he could play with it, and that was nearly as good. He could feel his heartbeat slowing, and slowly, he even started to be able to breathe again. He let Orpheus’ hand press him back without resistance, his eyes flickering shut for another long moment as he managed to begin to process the information his brain was murmuring in his ear again. He wasn’t in the arena. Mynrin wasn’t here, and even if he had been, he had no reason to kill L again. He wasn’t needlessly cruel - leave that to Hook - his actions had served a purpose, one L could even understand. And if L could understand it, he could predict it, maybe even stop it. But at the very least, he could minimize the damage. It didn’t matter here, anyway. Hook was the only threat. He was much harder to reason with, because he didn’t have a reason in the first place. At least, he didn’t seem to. He shuddered and curled closer to Orpheus, the trembling finally subsiding into unpredictable tremors, going through his entire body like waves or earthquakes. There was no point in pretending they weren’t close now, it was as obvious as his panic had been, and he didn’t think he was physically capable of trying to hide it right now anyway. He was usually impossible for strangers to read, but not now. He felt as open and vulnerable as a baby bird, his mask ripped violently away and his weaknesses laid bare to the world. Hook now knew how to hurt him. And that was almost as frightening as the strangling itself had been. He opened his eyes in time to see Czeslaw’s move, his eyes widening at the sight of blood running down his hand, at the words that trickled into his head like water. Something shifted behind his eyes as he processed that, as he watched Hook closely. And something clicked. Hook was not doing this for no reason, he’d been foolish to ever think that in the first place. Even criminals rarely acted without cause. Something had clouded his mind...he analyzed the sensation, and did his best to discard it, annoyed that it had put him in this situation. He was vulnerable. That could mean he was dead. “Enough,” he said quietly, voice hoarse. Then, louder, “That’s more than enough of that, I think.” He reached for Orpheus’ hand without meaning to. He wanted to say more, but his voice hurt, and it was hard to get the words out. He tried anyway. “Captain Hook. Your quarrel is not with him. Or me. Or Orpheus. You’re fighting yourself.” He breathed out, shuddering. “Stand down. Think for a second. Why have you been trying so hard if only to end it for a song? This room will not end when we walk out of here. What you do next will never be undone. Stand down.”

"Would you?" Starling's face lit up, not unlike a child who was given a new toy, and he leaned in to see better. Then he suddenly realized he might be coming on a little too eager and backed off, offering a sheepish smile and scratching the back of his head. "Sorry. It's just... We don't really have music where I'm from. So I'm really curious." He had heard the occasional rumor that the Governors might have secretly Designated musicians for their own personal use, but it was too dangerous to talk about those kinds of things openly. "I'd love to learn a bit, but I'm not sure if I have any musical talent." He laughed. "You were taught by a god?" Starling had to pause for a second in shock. He had heard OF gods, in the old texts, but things like that weren't even talked about much anymore. Concepts of religion had become antiquated after The Hunt and subsequent movement underground. So he didn't hear much about gods, and he'd certainly never MET one! The thought was amazing and terrifying all at once. "Wow! What was it like? You must be really good, then, assuming." He cracked a smile. "Could I hear you play something?"

L blinked in, expression more relaxed that he had looked for several blinks now, eyes bright. He was still in disguise, but he seemed less generally uncomfortable than he had for a while. “ - not that I don’t think…” he broke off as he noticed the House, his voice dying in his throat, which was still hoarse but not as bad as it had been. He turned, glancing over his shoulder for someone else, then focused on the room in general. Last time had been unpleasant, to say the least. Hook being aware of how to hurt him was a very bad feeling, even without the feeling of a hand against his throat. He swallowed, trying not to think about how that felt, and focused on the living room instead. He decided to give it around five minutes before he went into the room himself. He didn’t feel like sitting around, after all.

Orpheus’ eyes narrowed as he watched Hook and Czeslaw. He hated the sight of blood on the boy’s hand, but there wasn’t much he could do. He had offered the guitar as a weapon, and though he resented having to do that… it seemed the best way to keep things fair. He hated that he couldn’t avoid violence. Something in his brain was still telling him to give Hook the benefit of the doubt, but one glance at L told him that it wasn’t worth it. There were two instincts warring in him – the peacekeeper, the musician who would do anything for his friends, and the revolutionary, the young man who would protect his friends and even strangers from any sign of unfairness – and right now, his loyalty was entirely to L. It wasn’t that he wanted Hook dead – he wasn’t that extreme – but it seemed like Czeslaw was winning their little fight, and Orpheus couldn’t help but feel grateful. The only thing was, he didn’t know if Czeslaw was trying to get Hook to attack, or trying to get him to stop attacking. He didn’t want to support anything that would lead to more bloodshed, but he had a feeling that the kid had more experience with this sort of situation than Orpheus did. The best thing he could do now was stay here and make sure that L didn’t get any more hurt than he already was. He didn’t stop messing with L’s hair, didn’t stop holding him as closely and protectively as he dared. He was grateful when the trembling gave way to shudders, when L seemed to return to himself. Orpheus allowed L’s fingers to intertwine with his, hoping his presence was helping to give L strength, even if it was just a little bit. The thing was, he didn’t know how serious this was. He knew that L didn’t trust people. He knew that Hook had been given a weapon. Maybe it was the room, or maybe it was all him, but he was straining to believe that Hook would never use that against L. That nobody would be that cruel. But Hook had almost killed L. One incontrovertible fact. One wild, idealistic belief. He pulled L closer, waiting to see how Hook would react to L’s words.

“Calais, you…” Orpheus’ grin faded a little bit as he was thrown out of the conversation he was having, but it reappeared as soon as he realized who he was with. He was still worried after their conversation the last time, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t pleased to see L. He raised a hand in greeting, taking a small step closer to his friend. “Are you alright?” He asked, the question habitual now. He knew the longer L managed to stay alive, the higher his chances of surviving got. It was better than it had been, but that didn’t mean the odds were good yet. As long as L was in disguise, Orpheus was going to be worried. Perhaps, he considered, that was the downside to having friends. You worried about them constantly, especially when they worked doing something as dangerous as L did. He shrugged the thought away, managing to keep his smile.

Orpheus | Living Room | Shrike “You don’t have to apologize,” Orpheus replied mildly, meeting Starling’s face and giving him a small smile. He couldn’t imagine a world without music. Half of his personality seemed like it hinged on the fact that he had been playing for as long as he’d been large enough to hold an instrument. “I’d be happy to show you some. And it’s okay if you get excited or have a lot of questions. I had a lot of questions when I was first learning, too.” Well… at least Starling knew what music was, even if he’d never had a chance to hear it. “Talent doesn’t matter as much as people say it does,” he said after a moment, shaking his head a little bit. “If you put in the work to learn something, you’re going to be good at it. Music is no exception.” His fingers found the frets of the guitar and he was about to describe what he was doing to Starling when the other young man’s awe registered. “I guess the gods are probably more involved in my world than yours,” he admitted sheepishly. “Apollo was a really good teacher, though. And… I’d be happy to play you something,” he smiled, readjusting his fingers on the fretboard. The song started out slow, like he wasn’t quite sure what sort of music might be best to hear if you were hearing it for the first time. It didn’t take much time for it to build up tempo, Orpheus’ voice mingling with the chords he played as he melted into the music.

Hook - Amplifier Room
The pirates lip twitched as he watched Czes keep his grip on the blade, tempted to pull back and slice through his nubby little child hands...just out of spite. Fortunately he knew that any brash action would trigger everyone in the room to react - so he continued to hold his breath as blood began to trickle from the immortals palm. He watched the drop hit the ground silently, lifting his gaze back to Czeslaw with a sneer as the other blinker kept speaking. He stayed silent, his expression unreadable but his stance unchanging. A part of him was furious: who was this brat to think he knew him? Who was he to try and patronize him with lousy empathy? That flimsy reformation had been two years of betraying every instinct that had kept him alive for life times. Yet he couldn’t find it in himself to argue that anything Czeslaw had said was inaccurate. Obviously bad habits still easily bled into the House, even when he’d thought he’d gotten better at knowing how to step back. He wasn’t sure when, but clearly his grip had loosened somewhere along the way in Czeslaw’s spiel, because the next thing he knew the hilt of blade was ripped out of his grip. He recoiled back in surprise, then staggered back a couple paces seeing as the kid had already rushed on top of the dropped weapon. “You deceptive little shit,” he cursed, spitting the last word with a roll of his shoulders. His left arm raised defensively now, prepared to counter any attacks with his hook, a method for the piece of metal he’d likely put to use before. He had another knife in his belt as well, but he hesitated to draw it until he was sure he couldn’t break the cheat’s little wrist and get his sword back. He gave a side glance to L as he heard him speak. See, he was fine. He was also saying things that made too much sense. The pirate paused for a few seconds, thinking. “I haven’t ended anything,” he finally snapped back. Seeing as L was fine, he just needed out of this room. The House was [oops]ing with him surely, it always was. He just needed to get out. He stepped forward harshly with his right hand extended towards Czeslaw: “Hand me the damn sword,” he demanded, visibly tense as he left himself partially vulnerable.

Czes - amp room - hook, orpheus, L
It was a victory for Czeslaw when he gained control of the sword, even with his hand halfway sliced through at this point. It wasn't a total victory for the battle though, much less the entire room. He was lucky to have been right about Hook's personal problems, because in reality he had just been getting caught up in his own. Thankfully that unexpected burst of emotion could be hidden under the guise of getting into the pirate's head, to steal the weapon from him. This was especially the case when L had chimed in, even though he couldn't tell if the detective was being serious. But as for the information, he really had been merely guessing.
Now he rose to his knees, and then his feet, wielding the sword at the handle with his good hand. It was still coated in his blood along the blade. He raised the other hand, the damaged hand, in front of him, and soon the blood was making a stream from the sword back into his wound where it had come from. Back into his hand, and into his bloodstream. His eyes stared straight between the sword and the hand and right at Hook, and as soon as he was healed completely, he said, "No." With a chuckle.
He was flippant, and had even a bit of an eerie expression now. It was partly because he now had a weapon, and partly because once he started getting injured, he cared less whether it happened again. It was like he could never quite remember what it felt like if he hadn't been cut or bruised in a while, but once he was reminded it hardly hurt to him, he was ready for more. "All you do is pick on people weaker than you. Don't make me laugh. Practically no one is weaker than me, and I've still killed so many. But the way you go about it is pathetic." He kept enough distance to have warning if Hook lunged at him, while keeping the sword aimed at his enemy. As he backed up, he dragged the guitar a few paces with one foot. There still wasn't much distance between them, but he took a chance and reached down quickly. It was only to snap off the other end of the guitar string that had broken and wrap it loosely in his hand. That was a weapon.

L turned at the sound of a familiar voice, relaxing a little as he noted who it belonged to. He waved a greeting, eyes bright and almost cheerful. “I’ve contacted Watari,” he announced, a small, real smile tugging at his lips as he waited for Orpheus’ reaction to the statement. “My chances of survival are now 56%.” It was a large increase, not as high as he’d like them to be, but over 50% felt...good. Amazing, even. He was always going to exist in danger, more than the average person. This wasn’t new. But if he could raise his changes back to normal levels… He glanced down at his hoodie and tugged awkwardly at it. “This will be unnecessary soon,” he added, looking up. “And then I’ll wait for my hair to come back, and things will be alright, I think.”

L breathed in, hard, as he watched the situation progress. Czeslaw seemed in control, and he had to admit he was both impressed and slightly concerned about that. He didn’t trust him either, after all - Hook was the main threat, but L knew that ignoring side threats was always a bad idea - and he didn’t really want him to kill Hook. Hook struck him as a wild animal or an attack dog, trained from birth to react, react, react, and deal with the consequences later or never, because that was how you stayed alive. He’d been set off by something. He had decided to punch, and L...L had kicked him in return. He was feral, in a way, which meant he was dangerous. He squeezed Orpheus’ hand, breathing out. Then, in a croaky murmur meant only for the poet, “help me up?” The situation was getting worse. He couldn’t do much in his condition - he was incredibly, painfully aware that being strangled could have potentially serious side effects, would the House be so kind as to erase those? - but maybe if he could stop Hook, maybe Czeslaw would stand down, too. He wished he would stop seeing green in a room where none existed. It was making it hard to think. The taste of chocolate strawberries burned a hole in his tongue. A shudder went through him, and he caught his breath, then let it go, determined not to let himself slip into the past again, not until he could do it safely.

“You have?” Orpheus asked, eyes wide as a grin broke out over his own features. “That’s amazing, Λ!” He moved forward almost without thinking, arms curling around L’s waist as he lifted him up, spinning him once, twice, three times before breathlessly setting him down. “Sorry,” he gasped, pulling away a few moments later in case he had done the wrong thing. “I just… wow. 56%. It was 13% the first time, I…” he let his eyes close, unable to stop the smile that kept wanting to spread across his face. “I’m just… very pleased for you. And relieved… I mean… 56% isn’t perfect, but… wow.” Orpheus was very rarely at a loss for words, but he found he was now. He didn’t have the words to describe the relief he felt that his friend was more likely than not to survive to see another sunrise. He hoped L could see it on him.

Later, L would almost certainly wonder at the fact that he didn’t flinch. A sudden, unexpected movement. He should have been more than ready to fight, his reflexes should have kicked in. Maybe, he would muse, it had something to do with the strange thing that was trust. He didn’t consider for even a second that Orpheus meant him harm. Even his body, paranoid and distrustful though it was, didn’t prepare to take damage. He didn’t know what Orpheus was doing and he wasn’t afraid of not knowing. And then his feet left the ground and he seemed to fly. A bright, startled laugh escaped his lips as he flew, his arms flying out to the side to obey the childish instinct to flap them like a bird. His eyes closed for a moment as he spun, relishing the feeling of it, and then stumbling a little as he was put down, his arms still stretched out for a long moment before he pulled them back in. “I am more likely to live than I am to die,” he replied finally. He was still breathless from being spun, color in his cheeks and a childish sort of happiness in his eyes.

Orpheus wasn’t thinking about the fact that L could flinch away. He wasn’t thinking about the fact that L’s reflexes were lightning fast, that he could get a kick to the head faster than he could even process it. He wasn’t thinking about the fact that L had spent days in danger and was likely on edge, more likely to strike out than if he had been safe for the past several days. He was just thinking that he was incredibly happy and incredibly relieved and there was nothing he could do, no words to describe it, just… this. Victory, L flying in his arms, joy soaring through him, because it wasn’t perfect, but it was more than he had dared believe in. There was something about L’s laugh that made Orpheus’ smile soften, that made the entire moment feel more special. He didn’t think he had ever heard L laugh before, though he didn’t know how truly unusual the sound was. He just knew that L had probably been too stressed to laugh since the day they met. “I know,” Orpheus replied, voice soft and breathless with joy. “We should… we should do a room or something. To celebrate. Maybe the House will be kind enough to give us a nice room in your honor.”

L was incredibly relieved that the hadn’t accidentally kicked Orpheus, incredibly relieved that somehow his instincts were good enough to understand that this was okay. He was perhaps more of a wild animal than Orpheus was, but he was determined to be less of one than Hook. He wouldn’t lash out for no reason. Or even a stupid reason, like being paranoid. His paranoia kept him alive, most of the time, but still...he didn’t think he needed it here. Not for Orpheus, anyway. The House, definitely. He couldn’t quite believe he’d made it. He’d all but made peace with his own death, the idea of it a constant, nagging thought in the back of his head...and it could still happen. But it was more likely not to happen, and that made all the difference. “Yes,” he agreed, still a little breathless from his trip through the air. “I think a room is in order. The chances of it being a nice room are unchanged, but it’s possible.” He didn’t think the House probably cared that much what he’d been doing before he blinked in. It only cared how that affected his reactions. Probably, anyway. He headed for the hall, then paused and kicked his shoes off, glanced at Orpheus, gave a tiny smile, and continued.

Orpheus didn’t think of L as a wild animal. He couldn’t, actually… L was kind and intelligent and thoughtful, and though he was more paranoid than anyone Orpheus had ever met, he had good reason to be. In fact, Orpheus found he was grateful for the fact that L’s paranoia was probably the only reason he was still standing in front of him. He hadn’t come to terms with the fact that L was going to die. He had spent every minute he was out of the House (well, other than the minutes where he was too exhausted to do much of anything) worrying that he would blink back and never see L again. He would never know if his friend had died, and though the risk was still higher than he was comfortable with, it took a little bit of the edge off of his fear. It was sharp enough to keep him alert, but not sharp enough to cut. “Possible is worth it to me,” Orpheus murmured, moving towards the hall and holding the door open for L. He looked out into the familiar hallway, glancing from door to door. “Would you like to do the honors? You’re the one who gets to celebrate surviving, after all.” He smiled, turning his gaze back to search L’s gaze.

As long as his paranoia didn’t hurt anyone who didn’t deserve it, L was alright with being paranoid. It had served him well so far, after all...he couldn’t do what he did without it, that was just a fact. And what he did mattered to him more than he could possibly say. He didn’t think he’d come to terms with his death, exactly. He’d made peace with the possibility of it. The actuality would have terrified him. Still, when you lived as he did, surrounded by death, the possibility of it and the actuality of it were very different things. He ducked into the hall, pausing as he caught sight of the familiar doors, the way they all spread out before him. “Alright,” he agreed, an almost giddy note to his voice. Surviving. He rested his hand on the first door, then opened it and stepped inside. Into a room filled with brightly colored flags. They lined the walls, barely an inch between them. Black, gray, white, purple. Blue, pink, white, pink, blue. Pink, purple, blue. And so on. On the center was a table, with two boxes, one pink, and one blue. The cookies inside matched their containers down to the exact shade, and were neatly stacked, waiting to be eaten. “Oh…”

Orpheus found he liked it when L was excited. Perhaps it was because he had gotten to know him for so long when he was terrified about the likelihood of surviving to the next day, but something about this L felt a little bit more carefree than L had ever been before. No… not carefree, exactly, but… lighter. Less like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, less like he was weighing every option with the knowledge that each choice might be his last. Yes, he liked L better when he had a chance to live. Which wasn’t to say he had disliked L before, just… that he noticed a difference. And he wanted to keep this L around. “Wow,” Orpheus murmured, glancing around the walls at the colors that covered almost every surface. He glanced at the flags, surprised to see such large swaths of color. “This must cost a fortune,” he murmured, thinking of how expensive fancy dyes were in his own world. Of course, monetary cost wasn’t really an issue in the House, if it could make these all by itself. He approached a flag, gently brushing his fingers over it as he tried to figure out the significance of the room. He glanced at L, curious to see what his reaction was.
