Matt | Living room | ®Hawkpath® Lark strider |"Oh, gotcha," said Matt, not really pausing at the ominous implications of what the girl said. Was he concerned about her safety? Yeah, of course. But letting it show on his face wouldn't do her any good. If he'd said that, he wouldn't want people to be weird about it. He gave her a wide smile, rocking backwards on the couch a little. "Rue," he repeated, taking care to pronounce it like she had even though he knew there was a chance the House had already messed up the pronunciation. "I'm Matt. Nice to meet you, Rue - that's a cool name. Like a kangaroo, huh?" He looked up as a boy who looked about his age blinked in, clearly very stressed about whatever he'd blinked away from. "Hey," he said with a wave, ignoring the openly hostile look he was getting from the other boy.

Joey | Living Room | mainly matt Joey blinked into the now active living room, sitting on a purple bean bag. Decked out in his disguise, face covered with his skull like bandana. A sharp karambit twirled effortlessly in his left hand. If he hadn't known any better he would have pocketed it earlier, maybe he wouldn't have made eye contact with the clueless detective. In his peripherals he saw the shape of a young, fit man and a resting child right by.... Momentarily he locked eyes with Matt, only to get careless and as a result the karambit stopped by embedding itself in his palm. He let out a disgruntled mumble at the clumsy little mistake he had made, discouraged to look back up.

Rue sighed, relaxing a little. She was safe-ish here, anyway. There wasn’t any use in using up her energy if she could help it. “Nice to meet you, Matt.” She said, offering a smile. He seemed...nice. Not pushy. She wondered whether he’d been though enough to know that sometimes, everything was bad and you just didn’t want to think about it anymore. She looked as someone else blinked in, tensing a little. Peacekeeper was her immediate thought, though he certainly didn’t dress like one. Still...his commanding voice had put her on edge. She tried to relax. Chances were, he couldn’t hurt her even if he tried. “What’s a kangaroo?” She asked, looking up. Then she realized someone else had appeared, too, and she finally sat up, figuring it was best to be on her guard with so many strangers in the room. “Busy,” she commented.

The young man didn’t seem too bothered by Kaladin’s glare, and he didn’t really know what to do about that. It could mean he just… didn’t mind, but it could also mean he was acting like a stereotypical lighteyes. He frowned, then reluctantly let go of his spear. “Hey,” he returned, voice somewhat uncertain. He looked at Rue and then at Joey, eyes narrowing a little as he watched Matt to see what his reaction would be. A person’s reactions to things could tell a lot about them. The boy – Matt – seemed to be nice to the girl – Rue – at least. They all had such strange names, it was probably going to take a while for him to get used to those. Nobody was fighting here, at least. He crossed his arms after a moment, not minding if he seemed a little stand-offish.

Matt | Living room | ®Hawkpath® Lark strider |"Oh man, I can't believe you've never seen one," said Matt, reaching up to run a hand through his light brown hair as he thought of how best to describe such a weird animal to someone who had never seen anything like it before. "So, they're like a really really big rabbit - like a rabbit the size of a person, and they stand on their hind legs. And they have a really long tail, and they have a big pouch in their belly that their babies ride in. And, uh..." He trailed off and swallowed, distracted, as he suddenly locked eyes with the newest arrival to the room. Suddenly, he wasn't listening to the others around him anymore, his skin hot as he found himself unable to break the eye contact. Then, as Joey looked away, he did too, clearing his throat loudly as his cheeks flushed violently. "Hi Joey," he said, in a strangled sort of voice that he'd intended to pass as casual and laid back.

16 Year Old Zuko | What’s Better Than Soft Boys with Ducklings | ®Hawkpath® It was nice, knowing that Ronan probably had some secrets he didn’t want to share. It meant that he was less likely to ask Zuko about his own. They could exist without delving into each other’s private lives. There were some topics that they would have to avoid, but that was perfectly fine with Zuko. He didn’t want to talk about his past. He didn’t really want to talk about girls. Ronan hadn’t asked about either, which made him a far cry better than most of the other people Zuko had met in the House. Most of the people he’d met in his world, actually. “Turtles sound weird,” he said, making a bit of a face. He made sure to keep his voice low, doing his best not to scare the duckling away. “Long tails?” he added after a minute, trying to figure out what that would even look like. It didn’t quite make sense in his mind – scaly tails reminded him of snakes, but… he shook his head, trying to clear the image. It didn’t matter. Maybe he’d see a turtle one day. “Turtle ducks bite too, sometimes,” he said, gold eyes moving from the turtle duck to Ronan’s. “But I guess… only when they protect their ducklings.” It seemed they weren’t terribly different between worlds. Ronan seemed used to this, used to dealing with baby animals. Like the other things they hadn’t mentioned, Zuko avoided asking about it. A small smile slipped across his face as the turtle duckling made a pleased sound and shifted to lean into Ronan’s touch, ruffling its baby feathers. “It likes you,” he added, something surprisingly gentle in his eyes.

If he had been bothered to do, Joey could easily use his karambit to slice thoughthe tension. Joey grimmaced as the blade had not sunk in deep, thankfully enough. He refused to pay anyone else attention, keeping his head down and rubbing over the flesh wound. Tenderly, he rubbed the knicked skin making short work of his greeting. "Hey man." Joey gave a strained smile, although that was hidden by his mask. Instead, his light brown eyes did not connect with those blue ones that continiously peered right through him. The ragged looking man might as well donate his speer for Matt's cause. A shame they couldn't lock gazes like they locked lips.

| Victoria | Living Room | Victoria appeared suddenly, appearing on the floor near the couch. Her ears perked up as she felt the warm rush of air and musty smells that meant she was in the House. One of her back legs was hitched up at an odd angle, and she swayed on three legs as she got used to the blink. Frost covered the gears and chains, and frozen chunks of ice seemed to be gumming up the system. She sat down hard, falling a bit with a little oof."Hello!" She barked, looking around at the various blinkers. Ooh, a good chunk of people today! Interesting.

“Oh huh,” Rue frowned, trying to imagine a giant rabbit with a long tail. That also walked on its hind legs. She shook her head a little, clearing her attempts to imagine it away, as they were probably all wrong. She stopped as Matt looked at the other boy who’d blinked in. Oh. Oh.“Hi, what’s your name?” She asked Kaladin quickly, turning away from the tense, awkward interaction. She was pretty sure she didn’t want anything to do with that. Besides, he looked...well, not friendly, but younger than she’d immediately anticipated. She smiled at him, hoping he would relax a little. And turned as someone else spoke. A..dog? “Hey,” she said, waving a hand in greeting. So only people she’d never met today, apparently. She could work with that.

Matt | Living room | ®Hawkpath® Cloverleaf strider Lark |"Hey...." repeated Matt, letting the tension hang in the air for way longer than he was comfortable with. His skin was prickling with the awkwardness of the situation, and if there was anything he was supposed to be good at, it was diffusing awkwardness. "Hey, look, it's Victoria!" he said a bit more loudly than was strictly necessary considering the size of the room, kneeling down to wave to her on her level. "Tori, hey! Remember me?" he repeated, forced tone giving way to genuine happiness as he focused his attention on the dog. "Oh boy - c'mere, let me get some of that ice off your gears, huh?"

There was… definitely some tension between Matt and the other young man who had blinked in. Well… he had no part in that tension, and it was easier to just turn his attention away from it. He returned Rue’s smile, relaxing a little bit as he turned his attention to her and then to the animal who had blinked in. He had never seen an animal like that. It was like a horse, but smaller, and… well, it wasn’t very much like a horse at all. She, he corrected as he heard the dog speak. “Kaladin,” he told Rue, shifting into a slightly less fight-ready stance. He kept one eye on Matt, but felt safe to turn his attention away. “You said yours was.. Rue?” He wasn’t sure he was pronouncing it right, but he was trying.

“Yep,” Rue confirmed, nodding a little. “Nice to meet you, Kaladin.” She looked back at the dog - Tori? - and then at Kaladin, considering him. He seemed nicer than her initial impression had suggested...she breathed out. Wasn’t like she would have to worry about Peacekeepers unless she managed to escape, anyway. Which she was going to do, she reminded herself. At least no one seemed to be new. She really didn’t have the energy to explain things at the moment. “I haven’t seen any of the people here before,” she added, shifting into a more comfortable position on the floor. “Usually there’s at least someone I recognize a little.” She kind of wanted to see Noah and Myrnin again...she could use a friend at the moment. Then again, maybe she could make a new friend here.

“Nice to meet you too,” Kaladin replied, glancing back at his spear where it rested against the wall. The lighteyes appeared to be unarmed. He wouldn’t need his spear now – not that he would have been able to do much even if the lighteyes had attacked. He shook the thought away. If Hector was right, he needed to stop thinking in terms of light and dark. These people weren’t from his world. They weren’t Alethi, that was for certain. He cast a glance at Rue’s left hand. She was getting near the age she should have been hiding her safehand. It seemed there was a lot he was going to have to get used to, here. “I’ve only been here once,” he told Rue, looking around a little. “It wasn’t like this when I was here last. It was… more like a dueling ring.” He smiled a bit, remembering the satisfying fight with Hector. He’d have time after this battle to learn from that fight and practice what he might do in a similar situation in the future – he looked forward to it.

| Victoria | Living Room | Victoria wagged her tail excitedly as Rue answered her. She perked up as Matt got down on her level and called her name. She tapped her front paws against the stained carpet in excitement, her usual excitement a bit constrained by her current situation. "Oh, thanks!" Rue tensed a little as he looked at his spear, though she couldn’t blame him. He didn’t seem to know anyone here, it made sense that he would be wary. She was, too, just...not ready to go attacking anyone. Hopefully it was the same for him. He seemed nice, in a nervous, tense way. “Oh, once?” She repeated, surprised. “You’re taking it well. I was really freaked out when I first started blinking in. She glanced at the others. They seemed friendly enough...she wasn’t sure she’d be willing to do a room with them just yet, though. Rooms required trust. She wasn’t sure she had that for a bunch of strangers. “Have you had it explained yet?” She added, turning back to look at him. That was important to know. If he hadn’t, she’d suck it up and do it.

“I thought I was hallucinating, at first,” Kaladin told Rue, a small smile on his face. “I thought I was going mad.” He didn’t sound particularly upset by that fact, it was just… a fact. “It was more or less explained to me. I don’t really know the difference between that room and this room, but Hector was able to answer most of my questions.” Did Rue know Hector? It seemed that there were a lot more people who blinked into this… Paradox House… than he had originally thought. There had been a lot of people in his first room, and there were a lot of people here, too. He didn’t know most of their names, but… eventually he would start learning those, if he kept blinking in. Probably. “I still have questions,” he told Rue with a small shrug, not letting his posture fall for even a moment, “but I have a feeling I’ll start to figure those out by myself the longer I stay here.”

“What made you decide it was real?” Rue asked curiously. She couldn’t help but wonder whether he’d found proof, or something else that had convinced him. It probably didn’t matter too much, but she’d already asked, so hopefully he wouldn’t mind the question too much. “I don’t know Hector, but I’m glad he explained it.” She continued, shaking her head a little. “I don’t know a lot of blinkers. I don’t think anyone knows all of them.” Aside from the House it’s, anyway. She thought it probably knew. “I can try to answer your questions if you want me to,” the small vampire added, giving a small, bright smile. “This is the living room. It’s not dangerous like the other rooms can be, and it’s also pretty much the only place that is always there. I’ve never been in the same room twice.”

Shade | PITFIGHT | @/des
Shade hummed and nodded in agreement as she watched them, intrigued as ever by the style in which they clashed. But when Hook slumped onto her side, giggling like anything, she just had to turn her attention to see what on earth had gotten him so trembly with his amusement. She was not disappointed. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw the scene with Myrnin and the child he'd been rough housing with and she smirked slightly, then grinned, then found herself chuckling quite a bit as well. Distantly she hoped the both of them were alright... it was unclear what would happen if you fought outside the ring, if your wounds would heal or not. Perhaps if they stepped into the ring and back out. Seeing Myrnin trying to tickle his attacker off him absolutely rattled her and she dissolved into a fit of laughter as well, leaning back against the pirate to keep the both of them up. "That kid is ruthless, my gods," she wheezed.

“I trust my own mind,” Kaladin responded honestly, tilting his head just a little bit as he looked at Rue. “If I can’t, then there’s very little else I can trust. My men need me to be sound of mind, and having the same hallucination twice seems… unlikely.” Kaladin gave a small smile. He didn’t actually know how hallucinations worked. “Even if I am going mad… then it doesn’t help my men to believe that.” If he was worried about his own sanity, there were lives he wouldn’t be able to save. His brows raised as she offered to answer his questions. That meant he would actually have to find a way to phrase his questions. “I see. So other rooms are dangerous?” The room he’d been in had seemed pretty safe, so long as the people who ended up in the pit knew how to fight. That, however, seemed to be a big if. “Also…” he sighed, unsure if he really wanted to ask, “I take it your world doesn’t differentiate between darkeyes and lighteyes…?”

| Hector | PIT FIGHT | FIGHTING WITH KALADIN | Hector saw Kaladin's expression as he hurried to block the punch. He was glad that he'd been able to block it. He was good, with quick reflexes. The spar was exciting, and for Hector, as he'd predicted, the crowd had melted away to the back of his mind- his whole world right now was footwork, blocks, and blows. Hector didn't back off as Kaladin pushed back at him- it would have been a good strategy if Hector hadn't outweighed Kaladin- he pushed back forcefully, hoping to not give Kaladin a moment to go on the defensive. He aimed a blow at Kaladin's torso with his left, hoping to unbalance him further.

Kaladin, too, was grateful he’d been able to block the punch. He had sensed that the injuries the fighters sustained seemed to go away, but he still didn’t want to get the full force of one of Hector’s punches to the face. Kaladin stumbled back a step, eyes narrowing as he tried to find a way to attack Hector or defend himself. He tried to keep his fighting stance, tried to stay balanced. If he had managed to predict Hector’s punch to the face earlier, he might have been able to get out of this situation. As it was, he managed to stay on his feet even as Hector’s fist connected with his torso. He gave a small hiss of pain, stepping back and giving Hector a little bit of ground. It wasn’t ideal, but it did allow him to stay on his feet.

That made sense. He couldn’t afford to go crazy, therefore he wasn’t going crazy. She wished food worked like that… She knew something about hallucinations, based on what she’d learned about tracker jacker venom, but she didn’t see the need to tell him that. He wasn’t hallucinating. Making him doubt that for no reason was just cruel. “Some of them, yeah,” she told him, and memories overtook her for a second. It was hard, sometimes, to differentiate between her world and the Hunger Games room she’d been in, but some things had been different there. Notably, she’d met Myrnin. And also killed Myrnin. She shook her head a little. “Some of the, are really bad,” she explained quietly, looking away. “But some...some are good. And you can’t tell which will be which.” She blinked at his next question, frowning a little. “You mean like...eye color?” She asked curiously. “No, not really. I mean people notice eye color, especially if they’re paying attention, but...no. Yours does?”

Kaladin’s eyes narrowed just a little bit as he noticed the thoughts that seemed to cloud Rue’s face. He hadn’t meant to remind her of a bad time, but… well, he had walked right into that one. A soft curse echoed in the back of his head. “I didn’t mean to upset you,” he murmured, trying to make his voice gentle, “I should have realized you might have had bad memories of bad rooms. I shouldn’t have asked, I’m sorry.” His voice was genuine – he knew too well what it was like to be reminded of a bad time in his life. Every time he went to sleep, he saw Tien. He saw him in every young boy he took into his squad, every boy he’d bribed the other Squadleaders for. He would protect them. Nothing like what had happened to Tien would happen again. His brow creased. “Yes, I mean eye color,” he said a few moments later, voice hardening. “In my world, there’s a very big difference.” Kaladin sent another glance towards Matt. Perhaps… he should give him the benefit of the doubt. “It’s good to hear it’s not always like that.”

“No, no, it’s okay,” Rue looked up, trying to assure him she was fine by forcing a smile she didn’t quite feel. “I mean...the worst room I’ve ever been in? It was just my world. Really, I’d rather live in the House than anywhere else I know of.” She shrugged a little, trying to sound nonchalant about it, though she wasn’t succeeding that well. “I’ll survive,” she added, in case that helped. It was nice, having people who cared. But it was also dangerous. If she didn’t make it, if being a vampire didn’t save her...she wanted as few people to have to grieve her as possible. She wanted to be forgotten, if it would mean less pain in the world. But she wasn’t going to die. She wasn’t. So she wouldn’t need to worry about making friends here. The relationships on her own world were too late to be helped, anyway. She hoped Katniss didn’t grieve too much. “Oh,” she added, thinking about what he’d said. “That’s not fair. I didn’t choose to have dark eyes, anymore than you did.” She frowned, then shook her head firmly. “That’s just stupid.”

“I see.” Kaladin’s expression hardened just a little bit, his opinion of the House changing with every word he heard. Hector had mentioned it could be dangerous. He just… didn’t think about how that could affect people. Knowing that people’s worlds could be rooms here… it sent a shudder down his spine. He didn’t want anyone like Rue anywhere near Amaram’s petty wars. He especially didn’t want them anywhere near the Shattered Plains, if he ever made it there himself. “I believe you,” he added after a long moment, looking at Rue. “But even if you survive, you shouldn’t have to go through bad things. And you shouldn’t have to be reminded of the bad things you’ve gone through.” He offered her what he hoped was a reassuring smile – the kids he took into his Squad usually saw it as such, so he hoped it would work with Rue. The only difference was that he was actually able to protect those kids, but he didn’t think he could protect Rue from her world. Kaladin laughed suddenly at her appraisal of his world. “I think it’s stupid too,” he told her, resisting the urge to ruffle her hair.

Rue hoped she hadn’t made him too wary, but then, maybe it was best if he was wary of the House. If he knew what it could do. She hadn’t known, not at first, and look what had happened. “I don’t think people’s worlds are rooms very often,” she told him, watching his expression carefully. Was he worried about that? He seemed like he knew what it was like to have a bad world. It was too early to make that call, but Rue still thought she could tell that much about him, just by his expressions as she explained. She was pretty good at reading people, after all. The smile helped. She managed one back, letting herself relax again. He was nice...nicer than a lot of people she’d met. She felt safe with him, and she didn’t often feel safe. “One of my best friends has blue eyes,” she added firmly. “And the other one has bright green ones. If I’d assumed they were bad, I’d have never gotten to know them.” Her smile widened a little. It was easier to think about anything but her own world. “I’m glad you think it’s stupid, too. That way you can make more friends here.”

Ronan | Soft Gay Boys Petting Smol Baby Animals Is Valid | striderThey seemed to have an understanding between them already, and that understanding was that they weren’t going to pry. Zuko had a past he didn’t want to talk about, it seemed. Well, so did Ronan. They didn’t really know each other, they weren’t about to start having a heart to heart just because the baby turtle duck was just that cute. It was, to be clear. Cute. It was cute. And Zuko had dropped the girl conversation when it got awkward, which was more than a lot of people would have done in his place. Ronan owed him for that, though he wouldn’t admit it to even himself, because then where would they be? They weren’t friends. They were just two people who happened to get along. “Turtles are weird.” He said seriously, keeping his voice equally low and gentle. It was a strange sound, Ronan Lynch being gentle. “Not all of them have long tails, but the cool angry ones do. They bite you and don’t let go.” He sounded like he spoke from experience on that, though his voice didn’t carry a warning so much as...almost pride for the snapping turtle? Maybe he saw himself in it a little. He fell silent, focusing on the small animal instead. There was his small, pleased, gentle smile again, the one he hadn’t intended to let out. His walls were well and truly down by now, It grew a little as Zuko spoke. He wasn’t sure what to say other than it’s mutual, and he didn’t want to say that, so he settled with gentle stroking the baby feathers where the turtle duckling had leaned in closer.

It wasn't that different from fixing a bike or car, he realized - winter was bad for anything mechanical. "You gotta keep these dry and oiled, or they'll rust on you," he said gently as he scrubbed away the grimy city snow from the fur around her legs. "At least, when you're inside. Outside just be careful these joints don't freeze up or you won't be able to walk right - here, these are all loose cause of the ice." Carefully, he pulled a screwdriver from his pocket and began to work on some of the screws in her leg, tightening them where they'd been loosened by being frozen and unfrozen repeatedly. This weather was hard on everyone, he guessed. "How you been, Tori?" he asked, mostly to keep up friendly conversation while he worked.

Kaladin was bound to be wary, but he also wasn’t a coward. It was just… better to be aware of the challenges he might face here. Better to be aware that the worst of his world could appear here. What chaos could a chasmfiend cause? What about a Shardbearer? Kaladin’s eyes narrowed. He’d just have to become one first. That way he could protect the people here from any stuck up lighteyes with a shardblade. Speaking of lighteyes… he glanced back at Matt, his eyes widening a little bit as he noticed how… well… gently he was treating the creature. He let some of the tension drain from his shoulders. Things were well and truly different here. There was still likely some sort of authority, but if they were authority they hadn’t become so just because they happened to be born with lighter eyes. “I don’t think all lighteyes are bad,” he reassured Rue. “Some have honor. It’s just that most of them tend to think they’re better than us, and I don’t like it when people don’t give each other the credit they deserve.” He was used to being looked down on. Hopefully that wouldn’t happen here. “I’ll give them a chance. And hope that none of the lighteyes from my world decide to show up.”
