[ I'm gonna make a Mothlight post so if anyone wants to respond they can^^ ]

Mothlight gave a small purr when she felt the coolness of the stone floor against her warm pelt. The she-cat blinked her eyes open slowly and smiled when she noticed Icetail sleeping next to her. In the span of her short nap she had nearly forgotten the tom had been sleeping next to her, for it was a situation she wasn't used to. But the realization of why the tom was in the healers' den brought a sudden tampering to her mood. Mothlight parted her jaws in a yawn and sat up, silently examining the tom. He was in the same state as before, luckily not worse. Typically one wouldn't get much worse in such a short span, but with activity in sleep one could never be too certain.
The tortoiseshell she-cat quickly groomed her sleek pelt before gently up and gracefully slinking away from the tom. She was careful not to wake him, knowing that if he woke up before the poppy seeds wore off naturally it could put him in a worse state of exhaustion than before. Gingerear was asleep as well, sleeping peacefully through her poppyseed induced sleep. Mothlight felt a pang in her heart for the protector, knowing the trauma she'd have to face when she woke up to the fact that this was not a dream. Shaking her head, the healer slipped further into the den to take a look at the hard storage. Goldenrod, cobwebs, poppyseeds... Just a few of the herbs the clan needed to stock up on in the wake of the fox attacks. And with more foxes out there, the clan needed to be prepared.

So there had been more fox attacks. That was just great. Who was going to get caught in a fox’s maw next time? First Amberstep and Sagepaw, now Icetail and Gingerear… The way these attacks were going it wouldn’t be long before the entire Clan had some sort of scar from a fox. The foxes worried the tom, of course they did, but his worries were more or less on some other cat. Mapleflight, his sister, had told him to stop worrying about his daughter so much, but Cherrystorm couldn’t help it. If she had kits of her own she would understand. Maybe she would never understand the natural urge a parent had when it came to protecting their offspring. With his young daughter in mind, Cherrystorm made his way to the healers’ den where Sagepaw would hopefully be resting. Perhaps she was asleep at the moment, but if she wasn’t Cherrystorm wanted to see if one of the healers would let him stay and talk with his kit for a little while. The healers’ den was bound to be getting crowded with injured cats, but surely they would let a worried father speak with his daughter. Peering inside the den, Cherrystorm took notice of a familiar tortoiseshell pelt right away. ”Mothlight?” He called out softly in an attempt to not disturb any sleeping cats. ”Is it alright if I come in?” |

Hearing her name, Mothlight angled her ears toward the sound. Cherrystorm. The she-cat turned her head from the herbs and walked over to the tom, dipping her head in greeting. "Hello Cherrystorm." She mewed gently, doing her best to keep her voice quiet. "Of course it is." She mewed, stepping out of the way. The healer wasn't quite sure what the tom wanted, didn't he know Sagepaw wasn't in the healers' den at the moment? Surely he did, the tom was a protective father after all, but Mothlight hadn't seen the she-cat all morning. Sincere wounds weren't quite so serious, she had just assumed that another healer had taken her out for a bit. "Can I help you with something?" She asked, tipping her head and letting her tail fall.

With the approval of Mothlight, Cherrystorm slipped into the healers’ den. He looked around for a moment, allowing his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. Soon he was able to make out every little detail in the den as if pure sunlight were filtering in. He turned to eye Mothlight, dipping his head in gratitude. He was just about to ask about his daughter when a peculiar scent drifting into his nostrils and mouth. Immediately he froze up. A rush of memories poured over him like an overwhelming flood. Unable to help himself he took a step back, tail-tip twitching from side to side. ”Your lavender scent is strong,” he murmured slowly. ”Has it been growing well?” His question was almost out of place, random even. Sure, he was in the healers’ den, but what protector would know the scent of lavender right away and why would one ask such a question? |

As she finished her question, Mothlight caught the beginning of Cherrystorm's murmur. Tipping her head, the she-cat sat down and curled her tail around her paws. How did he know about lavender? Mothlight wasn't sure if she had ever come across a protector that knew much about herbs. Deciding not to question him on his past learning of herbs, Mothlight nodded. "Thankfully." She purred, puffing out her chest slightly in pride. "That's one thing we have a lot of stock up now.." She mewed, her words trailing off as a thought drifted into her mind. "I hate to bother you with this, but would you mind going herb hunting?" The she-cat twitched the tip of her tail. "I'm not sure how foxes are about herbs and I have a strange feeling that Honeyteller might not want anyone to leave camp alone." Of course the healer didn't know what Honeyteller's plans for the fox attacks were, but Mothlight could only assume that that might be one of them. Not to mention, her fighting skills weren't the best and she didn't want to be caught alone with a fox.

The thick scent of lavender was almost too much for the ginger tabby. Thoughts of his deceased mate flooded his mind, memories of the gentle she-cat misting over any other thoughts he had. Hollyheart had been a healer for the Clan. The two had grown up together, but they had never truly found interest in one another until they had been older tenderpaws, almost a protector and healer. Cherrystorm, Cherrypaw then, had fallen ill. Hollypaw had been old and experienced enough as a tenderpaw to tend to the sick tom mostly on her own. Lavender had been the herb the she-cat had mostly used to treat him, and everytime she administered some of the herb, she would softly explain how lavender was her favorite herb not only for its scent but for the wonders it worked. A few seasons later Cherrystorm had asked Hollyheart to be his mate as he had given her a stalk of fresh lavender. When Hollyheart had become pregnant with their first litter, the two had adamantly decided on naming a kit Lavenderkit, but when the kit had been born, nothing stopped them from naming her Sagekit; that showed the two cats that not everything could go as planned. Mothlight broke through Cherrystorm’s nostalgic thoughts. He blinked, attention back on the tortoiseshell. ”I wouldn’t mind at all,” he responded slowly, still somewhat in a light-headed state. He would be fine once he was out of the healers’ den. Why had he even come in the first place? Thoughts about his late mate had him tripping over himself mentally. Surely tagging along with the she-cat would clear the tomcat's mind. |

Mothlight couldn't help but let her mind wander to facets of why lavender was the particular herb Cherrystorm had pointed out. Surely it meant something to the tom, but what? Maybe it had something to do with his deceased mate, a healer Mothlight had worked with. That was the only thing the she-cat could think of, but she decided not to say anything. She knew how devastated Cherrystorm had been over the loss of his mate, and she didn't want to bring it up. She knew how heartbreaking those conversations could be.
When the protector agreed to herb hunting Mothlight perked up. She hadn't exactly planned for him to say yes, but she would certainly take him company. "Great!" She purred, standing up and stretching before heading out of the den. "I'm mostly looking for golden rod, cobwebs, and poppy seeds, but anything is fine." She mewed before a smile formed on her face. "If you need an help let me know."

Goldenrod, cobwebs, and poppy… Sounded simple enough. Cherrystorm was familiar with all three of those herbs. To him they were some of the easiest ones to find. He had gathered herbs with Hollyheart plenty of times when she had still been alive, the former healer always making time to stop and teach her mate about certain herbs. The more common the herb the more Cherrystorm learned about it. For a protector he was quite intelligent in the herb department, but his heart lay with the job of protector. He wasn’t a healer, he knew he couldn’t take that job on. He would much rather chase down rabbits and mice than sniff out odd plants and whatnot. With light pawsteps Cherrystorm followed Mothlight out of the den. He stretched his legs out as he entered into the heart of camp. ”I think I won’t need that much help,” he admitted with a level voice. Now that he was outside of the healers’ den he was already feel much more relieved - some thoughts of Hollyheart were a blessing, but some were painful to remember, especially when he knew she was no longer there. |

Mothlight watched Cherrystorm with bright eyes and nodded. His knowledge had to have stemmed from Hollyheart, or even a parent. Where else would it have come from? Mothlight could remember the times Adderflame had tagged along with her to collect herbs, or mindlessly sat with her while she sorted, doing her best to make him pay attention. Adderflame was too much of a protector to even act interesting in herbs. The thought brought a smile to her face. A sweet sadness crept over the she-cat at the thought, but she shook it away. Her mate was gone, and had been for a while. She had moved on, needed to, even.
When they exited the hidden camp, Mothlight purred at the sunny sky. She loved the safe feeling of camp but sometimes she wished she could just bask in the sun without having to worry about being in the territory. The warmth of the sun's rays, the fresh smell of the earth, Mothlight loved it all. It was no wonder the she-cat was a healer. In many ways her duties gave her more of an excuse to be outside than the protectors. Her gathering often took a long time, whereas hunting generally wasn't so long.
Waving her tail, the slender she-cat looked over at Cherrystorm. "How have you been?" She asked, her voice laced with true intention.

While Cherrystorm wasn’t the type to really care about the personal lives of other cats in the Clan, he knew a bit about Mothlight’s. He knew a bit about a lot of cats, but his mind was currently on the healer beside him. Cherrystorm had fought and hunted alongside Adderflame, the healer’s now deceased mate. He had been a strong cat, intimidating on the battlefield and merciful in taking the life of prey. The tomcat had been a fine member of GroundClan, and when he had died, he had been mourned greatly by the Clan. It was odd to put into perspective just how much in common Cherrystorm had with Mothlight. They had both lost loving mates, they both had only one kit from such a relationship… The protector felt as if he could sympathize with Mothlight, like he could actually get along with her. While he wasn’t looking to make any friendships, he did have to stop and wonder if making a friend would actually be all that bad. It’ll be good for you. Cherrystorm could almost hear the voice of his sister say that in his ears. He grumbled faintly to himself, pushing aside the thought of Mapleflight for now. The day was perfect for gathering herbs. The sun was gentle upon his light-toned pelt and there was a soft enough breeze to keep the day from becoming too hot. The sky was a robin’s egg blue with only a few thin clouds drifting lazily along. The warm scents of newleaf were welcoming; Cherrystorm caught himself purring ever so slightly as a gentle breeze rolled over his thin pelt. The breeze carried with it a scent of fresh rabbit and squirrel, but he had to remind himself that this patrol was for herbs, not prey. The Clan had plenty of prey right now, there was no need to catch something just yet. Feeling much better than he had earlier, the protector was able to catch Mothlight’s question as soon as she had inquired. ”Decent, I suppose. All these fox attacks have been causing tension and stress to most of the Clan, though.” At the mention of foxes the tabby felt his claws unsheathe into the dirt underpaw. He had had a run in with a fox a few days back; luckily the creature had ran off before a battle had broken out. ”What about you? What with all the injuries, your paws must be tired of running around.” |
