it is my goal to someday find one of he people who worked on it and ask them how exactly the idea to create an afterschool special supposedly based on masonic propaganda but having no resemblance to the actual original thing came about, because I had to sit through that whole thing and,,,damn is it bizarre there are many good ways that the magic flute has been adapted,,, and that is most definitely not one of them. it just creates too many questions in literally every second of screentime

Probably, they didn’t actually watch the opera, then heard what it was about and told to make it a cartoon x3 I could see that happening. I’m surprised you watched it, tbh :S
No answers, no plot, nonsensical characters.... Idek

that's probably what happened tbh. there's just. So Many Questions with this and its cartoon logic i have seen some pretty ridiculous hints in my mad hunt for mozart opera things, and quite a bit of it isn't pretty

yeah there's a lot of people out there who think that horrible abc thing is a completely truthful adaption and in my mind I feel like I'm screaming that's like going to see one of the really old Don Juan films from the 20's-30's (which I've heard are all pretty awful on their own) and thinking "ah yes! This must be what the opera is like" yet another of the Long List of Reasons Why I Made Ensemble Exist

the kids that went with me to that bizarre school opera field trip of course have little knowledge of the darker parts of the magic flute (because of course they were omitted from that trip) so when I show one of them said darker plot points (I.e. Monostatos, Pamina's Knife Adventures, the beginning of Papageno's last scene, etc) they get completely shocked and it's hilarious because they think of it as a fairy tale and not... that it's the best ensemble: it's a real all purpose comic, even though the genre of opera cats seems horrifically niche

@redheartofriverclan - OMG, that would be hilarious, tbh. That look of shock as they realize everything they knew is wrong. Kinda like showing someone the Grimm's version of their favorite Disney movie XD

I've done the same thing multiple times to my poor friends. They did not expect Don Giovanni to have the subject matter it does either, so their reaction when they found out what it's about was priceless lmao i have never been truthful about what opera content it is simply because of the fun that emerges when someone finds out opera isn't as clean as it seems

@redheartofriverclan - Reminds me of when I went and saw Don Giovanni. I roughly knew about Don Giovanni before we discussed it in class (I went with my choir, if you recall), knowing he was also Don Juan and very, you know. So I wasn't at all surprised when we were warned about the possibility of seeing something adult-ish, but I think my classmates were XD
They had a very different view of opera before they went, lol

people say "Mozart's for kids" because the Magic Flute is a fairytale so people think "ah yes let's take children to Don Giovanni! what could go wrong" hilarity ensues. theres a whole list I have of "the innuendos that I wanted to use for Don Giovanni in Ensemble but couldn't because of running the risk of a ban because they were too obvious" and while I can't put them here obviously... man are they hilarious. Mozart operas are literally just all the inappropriate jokes piled together into one ball of madness

@redheartofriverclan - Yeahhhh, Mozart's not for kids. I don't think most operas are "for kids" if parents really knew what went on in them XD Oh, how I wish I could see those innuendos, because I laughed so hard when I saw Don Giovanni. I mean, even La Donna e Mobile is hilarious! Maybe someday you'll be able to put them in (like on a different site or something) :3 It gives a pretty clear picture of what Mozart was really like--behind the fame and compositions.

The innuendo list basically is just the Don, Leporello, and cat biology. it's great Mozart's sense of humor was...interesting... there's a whole Wikipedia article on mozart and his fascination with juvenile humor. his letters and music written for friends make his operas look dignified lmao

@redheartofriverclan - Still, though XD Well, I can relate to that XD I don't have much of a sense of humor, but it comes easily if I talk to my friends (since I've learned their humor)

I tend to have a humor mostly based on mocking other things, to be honest. Or bizarre inside jokes that don't make very much sense

@redheartofriverclan - Mine can be dark, perverted and weird. Generally, people don't get it because it's either a reference or an inside joke x3 I also make wisecracks that nobody ever hears, but if they do it's great XD

I have a bizarrely dark humor as well, and my humor often is rather dirty. And it pretty much roasts everything. So of course Mozart operas are right up my alley

I would imagine he would get a bit tiring but then again given I tire people out easily as well maybe that'd neutralize it lmao i would love to be able to ask him things about his characters because it can get confusing trying to work them out for myself at times

yeah it would be great to be able to discuss the operas with him. I don't get to discuss them very much In Real Life(TM) because understandably I've only found 1 other opera fan and I don't get many chances to talk to them without the discussion sounding awkward rip honestly analyzing all the characters to do Ensemble is fascinating, because a lot of the supposed buffoons have valid points and the supposed good guys can actually be pretty Yikes. it's really cool to see all the layers come together like that

@redheartofriverclan - Ehhh, why not just go for it? X3 I'd laugh at people's reactions to what we were saying. Luckily, my best friend has been to all the same operas because she went with another club (French Club, which I joined later). I love analyzing like that, it's just something I do. Layers and layers of characters and backstory, coming together to create something special :3

I find analyzing opera to be great because every single character has all sorts of layers- there's not a single one (except for a few in the Magic Flute lmao) who is just a stereotype and nothing more and/or only exists for one purpose, and each has many roles to fulfill Especially in things with lots of different characters like Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, it's amazing to see everything come together like a massive puzzle

@redheartofriverclan - It really is :3 It makes all the time spent on the characters and the story totally worth it. Especially if people like your writing, because that's important XD I've had many failed stories in the past, because I relied heavily on people liking it instead of making sure I liked it and enjoyed it
