honestly it's one of very few things I have managed to actually organize- but man, with it I get incredibly stubborn over every little detail- everything from the rope in Papageno's bag to the scar over the snake's eye in the first few pages to every character design's colors (I made a thread with most of those somewhere, and the ones not on there can be found elsewhere on this site unless they're massive spoilers such as Sarastro's design) to have some kind of purpose and meaning. It's tiresome but it makes the final thing look good so it's ok

@redheartofriverclan - That's dedication~ I admire that! I never had anything that I've stuck with for very long, so it's really cool that you're able to! I think that's super cool. Thinking of all the ways the characters are connected, getting certain designs for certain ideas, etc. You're making me think I'll need to get better as a writer, and eventually as an artist! Because art isn't really about what it looks like, it's about the complexity and ideas that come across. I think you draw in a way that matches what you're writing, and that's really important. You don't want something super serious with something really comedic, or whatever. I know it's easy to judge your own work as crap or not good enough, and I want you to know that I really love your art!

man I found most of the references the bulk of them can be found Here (featuring me being depressed over the summer) featuring many Mozart cats and one outlier from the barber of Seville who had to be there for continuity's sake, meanwhile the Commander's two designs are over here because I made those after the first thread. Tigrissa's and the Three Ladies' references I never put on the site (but they exist) and everyone else (such as Sarastro or Papagena's three(!) reference sheets) can't be shown because their designs are massive spoilers in and of themselves. but man I'm glad you like the art style! honestly that's how I've drawn cats for as long as I can remember. they usually fit because they look endearing and cartoony but not to the point where it takes away the serious sides of Ensemble

@redheartofriverclan - Omg, I love the design page. I've been wanting to draw comics forever. It's hard to talk yourself into it, so kudos to you :3 I wish I would just do it instead of overthinking it

What I just do to get myself to do it is remind myself of the nearest point in the story I'm looking forward to (right now, it's the page update for October 29th because that's the page we finally get a villain, but this goal changes) and drive myself to do it to go there. usually I listen to podcasts/music while doing so as well, makes the job feel easier its also because by this point I've had the opera cats around for like seven to eight years so I can't give up on them now

I’m being a character from a musical I like. I’ve made the whole thing. I don’t really celebrate that much. It’s just an opportunity to make a costume and eat candy xD

It seems being dedicated to your characters is a major motivator. Maybe I should connect with mine to see if that works
Please save them from death:yeah that used to happen to me all the time until I figured out how to space out the big exciting scenes that i want to write (there are many in Ensemble; some aren't even exciting but I'm looking forward to writing them because they're great character moments) and yeah I'm far too connected to the opera characters I've stolen, mostly because when I was stressed or scared (especially as a kid) I would look to them as a strange sort of guidance, so I like to think that I'm doing them a favor in return for all the help they gave me back then when I draw the pages (although truth be told I do not think Mozart would like what I've done to his works very much)

@dreadheartofriverclan - Yeah, that's really important for a story to be good.
Lol, I think Mozart would be pretty peeved. But I think you will bring opera to some people who maybe thought it would be boring, or have been interested but can't go see it.

Mozart liked cats but I do not think he would enjoy my "you know what maybe this shouldn't be racist/sexist/Masonic/religious/sort of homophobic?but it's kind of hard to tell, how about I make the story more inclusive and modern" shenanigans and the fact Ensemble doesn't have the type of humor Mozart enjoyed (which is very much for the better) but yeah my goal for Ensemble is to have it be a better adaption than that disgusting ABC after school special and be something that can be understood by people who don't listen to opera, and hopefully I've succeeded

Lol. People back then had vastly different views and issues, so I think he wouldn't even understand what you were trying to do.
Please save them from death:I don't even think he'd be able to wrap his head around the idea of a lot of things in the comic ranging from -me making a good deal of the characters LGBT -The Speaker (Sarastro's sort of right hand man in the original opera) being female instead of male in Ensemble and yet still being able to hold such a position of high power (and doing her job better than Sarastro does his) -no sexism, anywhere, because these are cats and real life cats don't really care about gender most of the time -no Christianity among the cats because again these are cats and it wouldn't even be possible for cats to find out about Christianity anyway -Sarastro not being a Freemason -Monostatos not being racist -moral ambiguity everywhere -Don Giovanni getting locked in a cursed incinerator instead of going to hell because as I said before there is no Christianity in Ensemble theres like many more but mozart wouldn't even be able to understand it lmao

I think he would explode at the first one, let alone the other themes XD

honestly it gives me a snide satisfaction having the Speaker be female in Ensemble- right now she's basically running the entire fallen Sun kingdom because Sarastro's sitting around moping over how his kingdom is dead and his wife is dead and his kids are supposedly dead and he basically failed at being a King ir whatever and so the Speaker (a non-straight female, tHE HORROR) is basically having to carry all his crap for him, and she's doing a damn good job at it too (I mean given they somehow managed to take Pamina from the Queen of all cats, which is a pretty monumental task given this is the Queen we are talking about). Mozart would not be proud but you know what I don't care it makes me feel awesome doing it

yeah the old sexism/racism/other very bad vibes were There but thank god, Ensemble is better in that department another thing I'm very proud about is the Ensemble's New and Improved(TM) versions of Papageno and Papagena and their whole character arcs- I can't go very much into either because both have spoilers, but I will say that it's much more serious and down to earth than the original's and Ensemble!Papagena is infinitely better than the original opera's version of her (because, as I said, she has actual personality and plot purpose now and her own character development too!)

Yes, yes indeed. It would honestly not come across very well if you stuck to the source material, you'd probably get banned, just sayin' x3 Wow, she's a character now!!! Lol. After just a brief glance at that ABC dumpfest, and you're 1000000000 times better already XD

Mosspool - Yeah, it's really fun~ My choir teacher (now my vocal instructor) sets it all up with the help of parents of choir kids. Everyone who does it prepares during class and after school. It's a lot of work, but worth it in the end~

the original being adapted word for word would get me banned on Monostatos alone, who are we kidding but yeah Papagena's a real character now!!! with real thoughts and feelings!!! when she swoops in she isn't a Deus ex Machina who solves all of Papageno's issues! Papageno himself is a more rounded character! they know each other before the events of Ensemble and have a whole backstory! it's great the abc magic flute is one of those things that I don't even know how or why got made. why does it exist. who thought making papageno a talking dodo bird would be a good idea. why do they real things from sleeping beauty of al places. WHY IS THERE A TWO HEADED DRAGON AND A CROW AND A DONKEY. and how in any situation did they get Mark Hamill of all people to work on it. How. Why. What the hell.

@redheartofriverclan - For sure banned from pretty much anywhere Cx Probably the galaxy, for safety measures ;D Here, kids, we see an exhibit of the 90’s and the wild movies it produced. Look, there’s the horrible ABC version of The Magic Flute. The world may never know what truly went on in the minds of ABC cartoonists as they created it.
