Chapter 1 :
Jumppaw lied down in the mud caked ground and looked up at the brilliant moon in its former glory. Jumppaw felt like he could grasp it in his paws and hold it, caress it. If he had the moon just imagine what he could do! He would have so much power then...But he would give it all to Mallowpaw, his sister.
She meant everything to him, his life, his meaning, his skills. He would do anything to keep her with him, forever. She was the only remaining family that he had left, so she felt very precious to him.
He wanted to stay here forever, let the moon's light sink in and clear all the worries out of his head. Just when he was in the middle of his dreaming his sister broke in. "It's beautiful isn't it, the moon, shining so brightly right now."
Jumppaw jerked his head up in surprise. Who had awoken him from his
wonderful dreams? He looked to his left and saw his sister, Mallowpaw, her amber gaze burning into him like a thousand fires.
"Hey Mallowpaw." He mewed casually.
Mallowpaw narrowed her eyes and swung a paw at him playfully.
"Didn't you hear what I said silly?" Mallowpaw was always so fond of him, as he was fond of her. She would play with him and nip at him and do all the things a good sister should do. Oh, he was glad to have
her.
Jumppaw tried to think if she said anything. He was dreaming when she told him, so of course he didn't hear her. "Of course I didn't hear you!" He swatted at her golden ear playfully, "And you know that don't you!"
Mallowpaw darted out of the way from his blow. "No, I didn't know." She said in a taunting tone while taking small nips at his fur. Jumppaw knew what she wanted.
A challenge.
"Bring it on!" Jumppaw yowled as he pounced at her paws, nipping them gently. Mallowpaw smirked. "You can nip harder brother! We're not kits anymore! Like this!" Mallowpaw quickly and gracefully pounced on Jumppaw and nipped him hard on the paws.
Jumppaw pouted. "Hey, not so hard you big furball!" He said while chasing after her. And on and on it went, nipping and pouncing and having fun. All was right in the world. What could go wrong?
At this very moment, Jumppaw’s whole world changed.
They were playing, yowling and nipping and doing all the good play-things that apprentices should do. They were playing like kits I suppose, but did they care? Nope, not one bit. After Jumppaw was beginning to win, he pushed Mallowpaw back farther and farther. “Admit defeat!” He kept saying, but of course, Mallowpaw did not admit defeat in any way.
Soon, after enough pushing, they were at the cliff’s edge. You could see the nervous angle of Mallowpaw’s brow as she got closer and closer to the edge.
“What’cha scared about?” Jumppaw taunted. Mallowpaw hissed back, though fear clouded her voice. “Nothing! Nothing at all!” But soon, Mallowpaw slipped off the edge. Jumpaw could still hear her distant yowl of fear as she fell into the crashing waves at the bottom.
“No..Mallowpaw!” He breathed. She was gone. He would never see her glistening amber eyes again. He had no family left. She was gone. His life was gone. Everything was gone. He sat still, taking the whole event in. It’s all my fault..I never saw the edge of the cliff coming…And now she’s gone..Everything is gone. Jumpaw slowly turned around to face the whistling breeze.
He felt sadness creep into him like the cold winter breeze, but he had to get back to camp and tell the others, especially Cedarclaw, her mentor. He ran back to camp to tell the others about the horrific turn of events. What would he do without her?…
Chapter 2 Part 1 :
As his paws thundered the ground, mud sprayed him. He hissed in aggravation.
Why? Why him? On this perfect day, why him? He yowled to the air in anger as he broke through the dense thicket of ferns to camp. As he came stomping into camp, his yowl still rang in the air. Pebblestar flipped his head around quickly to look at Jumppaw, his eyes glazed with fear.
“Jumppaw! What’s wrong!” The leader yowled as he ran over to Jumppaw.
Jumppaw hung his head miserably. “I-It’s Mallowpaw…” His voice managed to creak out, “She’s gone..gone..” Jumppaw felt his heart turn cold. He wished she could be here, right now, with him, her golden fur pressing up against his pelt. But she was gone…Forever. There was nothing he could do to get her back. Jumppaw looked up to the stars. Take good care of her Starclan, keep her safe. He prayed to the stars.
The leader’s eyes widened in shock and his neck fur bristled.
“What?! How?!” The leader frantically scanned the forest near Jumppaw hoping to see Mallowpaw somewhere in the distance.
“It was me..My fault..” Jumppaw began, “We were playing near the ocean until we got near the edge of the cliff..I kept pushing her back, Mallowpaw looked nervous but I couldn’t tell why. I couldn’t see the edge coming..” Jumppaw croaked.
“I..” The leader looked at him with sad eyes, “It wasn’t your fault..You were just playing…We all remember her…” Just as the leader said those solemn words, Cedarclaw rushed through the camp entrance.
“What’s going on?” He yowled frantically. Cedarclaw was on a patrol with Acornblaze and Fallenfire. Acornblaze stood next to Cedarclaw, his eyes narrowed.
“Yea, what’s going on?” Acornblaze meowed suspiciously.
Fallenfire dashed around camp.
“Are my kits ok?” He yowled. Jumppaw rolled his eyes. Fallenfire was always concerned about his kits more then anything.
Daisyfall, his mate came trudging out of the nursery caring Heronkit, Antkit and Jaggedkit by their scruffs. They were mewling quietly.
“Yes, they’re fine, no need to worry.” Daisyfall said calmly.
Fallenfire took a deep breath and ran over to his kits.
“I’m so glad.” He purred. While nuzzling Daisyfall gently.
Finally, Pebblestar stood to his fullest height.
“All cats of the clan please come to the Sunrock for a clan meeting!” His yowl tore through the air like snapping talons. The Sunrock is where the clan would meet for clan meetings. Pebblestar then swished his tail and padded up the Sunrock.
Jumppaw sadly padded over to the group of cats that were now gathered under the Sunrock and waited for their leader to speak.
“I have terrible news, especially for Cedarclaw.” Pebblestar’s gaze turned to Cedarclaw, who's eyes were stretched wide with shock, “Mallowpaw, a loved and respected apprentice of Sunclan has died. She died when her and Jumppaw were playing. He pushed her too far close to the edge of a cliff and she fell off.” The leader’s voice rang with sadness.
Cedarclaw hissed and raked the ground with his claws. “What?!”...
Chapter 2 Part 2 :
All the cats in the clearing tucked their ears to their skulls in fear. Cedarclaw was quite terrifying, especially for Jumppaw.
Cedarclaw turned his fiery gaze to Jumppaw and snarled. “It’s all his fault! He did this!” He turned to Pebblestar, “Can’t you see that?”
Pebblestar sighed. “It’s not his fault Cedarclaw. He never saw the edge coming. She was also his sister, his only remaining family left. So, why would he kill her?” The leader looked challengingly at Cedarclaw.
Cedarclaw shook his head in rage. “It’s his fault!” he screeched before pouncing on Jumppaw, “All his fault!” He raked a long gash down Jumppaw’s shoulder.
Jumppaw screamed in pain. “I’m sorry Cedarclaw but it’s really not my fault!”
Pebblestar snarled angrily at Cedarclaw. “Stop!” He yowled.
Cedarclaw stopped and turned around to face Pebblestar.
Jumppaw whimpered as blood gushed out of his shoulder wound. “Pebblestar, I need to go see Dawnleaf to get this taken care of.”
Pebblestar nodded. “Yes, you may, but just so you know we will hold a vigil for Mallowpaw tonight. And no one,” The leader’s gaze swept around the clearing,”no one will blame or hurt Jumppaw for killing Mallowpaw. There is no evidence. Meeting dismissed!” Pebblestar jumped down the Sunrock and settled in his den.
Cedarclaw spit angrily and stomped back to his den.
Jumppaw limped to the medicine cat den. “Dawnleaf, can you take care of this shoulder wound?”
Dawnleaf stuck her head out of the den. “Oh! My dear! Come in!” Dawnleaf helped him in and lay him down on some moss. “I’m sorry about Mallowpaw.” She mewed softly.
Jumppaw winced as she put marigold on his wound. “It’s fine…It’s all over now…” He breathed. After she gave him some poppy seeds, he felt very tired. He curled up in the thick blanket of moss and fell into a deep sleep.
Chapter 3 :
The golden she-cat snarled. “Yes! I’ve told you many times Streambed!” The golden’s she-cat’s eyes glistened threateningly at the cat called Streambed.
Streambed dipped her head in sadness. “Ok my dear, only if this is what you really want.” The dark trees whistled around them, whipping their fur. The dark trees seemed to moan, whisper a song that only the wind could hear and the pond rippled endlessly behind them.
Streambed turned around to face the pond, the dark, murky water seemed to repel Streambed, pushing her back. Streambed looked calmly behind her at the golden she-cat. “The water doesn’t want me.” Streambed meowed over her shoulder.
The golden she-cat bunched her muscles and snarled. She seemed ready to pounce. “I don’t care! Just go in!” She screeched.
Streambed’s eyes glinted with pure sadness. “Ok.” She whispered, sadness clouding her voice.
Streambed turned her eyes back to the water that lied in front of her. She bent her face down so that it was almost touching the water. “I’m sorry but…You’ll have to take me.” Streambed whispered to the murk below her.
The water let out a deafening screech and pulled away from Streambed.
Streambed stamped her paw angrily. “I have to do it! Let me in!” She yowled at the water.
The water seemed to dip it’s head, as if understanding what Streambed meant. It slithered back in place, constantly rippling.
Before Streambed continued, she turned to the golden she-cat. “I’ll miss you.” She whispered sadly.
The golden she-cat seemed to get even angrier. “I’ll never miss you!” She screeched at Streambed.
Streambed nodded. “I understand.” Streambed turned back to the water once more. She put one gray paw in the water. She then gasped in pain as the water climbed up her shoulder. It wrapped around her, until she was fully covered.
Streambed let out another screech of pain.
She turned to the golden she-cat, who seemed to be smiling evily. “I-I’ll always love you, no matter what you do.” She mewed to the she-cat. But before the she-cat could reply, she was sucked into the swirling water.
