(Okay, got it! I'll remember to use those terms from here on out.)
Archer nodded. There was no use to try and argue with the lieutenant. After all, he did know the prisoner better than anyone. "Would you like me to question the girl as well? Or do you have someone else in mind for that?" he asked instead.
~*
Destiny stirred at the sound on the slot in the door opening. Despite less than soft bed, she had fallen asleep quickly the previous night. The events of yesterday finally catching up to her, causing her exhaustion to take over. Blinking open tired eyes, she spotted Sabel by the door. The other girl was eating from one of the two trays on the floor. Her stomach growled. Pushing herself up, she got out of bed to join her friend. "This is it?" she asked, kneeling down and inspecting the meger meal.
~*
Nichole laughed softly and returned the hug. Once free, she followed the girl so she could help with the homework. Ava was a smart girl, so it never took long for her to finish what homework she brought home. If she had already been working on it, then there probably wasn't much left for her to complete.
~*
Faith gave another small laugh. "If we had that kind of money lying around, I would be asking for a raise," she replied. The woman picked up on his accent. It was a little hard to miss. However, many tourist and new citizens from other countries found there way into the little cafe ever now and then. Since this was the first time she was servicing him, she felt it wasn't the time to quiz him about where he was from. After all, he might have a job to get back to. She didn't want to hold him up and cause him to be late. "But it some would happen to stray in here, I'll be sure to let you know."

Joanna let him go. She felt no particular need to get in the last word; it had always seemed like a meaningless and petty dominance strategy to her. She would have been rolling her eyes at his inability to pick up on what she was saying, that she had not been denying having a sibling who'd gotten himself in trouble but simply been implying that her lack of emotional attachment to him meant that he was in no way going to make her a liability, but this was more serious than she'd realized. Felix's capture was strictly family business, off the books entirely. This captain would have had to pull some serious strings, definitely illegal ones, to have that knowledge. She would have to look deeply into this. She may have to get her hands dirty. But, that was what she lived for.
((If the innately shady nature of this isn't something you're willing to roll with, speak now.
I also maybe should have warned you about this, but consciously decided not to, to see what Colmac's genuine reaction would be--but if he'd listened and just let it end there, it probably would have turned out okay for him. As it is, he has not made an enemy, per se, but let's just say he is never getting any favors from the Schreod family. How far are you willing to let this go? If it's okay with you I could certainly do some very evil things to Colmac for this.
Also, serious question--isn't spy work pretty much separate from the military? "Agent" isn't a military rank so can it actually be considered below or above any military rank?))
((Dawn: Remus was captured with Schwarz, in a storyline that rather quickly lost our interest and I think that we chucked into the bin of "Never mind, this didn't actually happen." I think we could do something cool with the concept we were going for but maybe not at this point in the Rp. If you want Remus to still be a POW though, feel free. He could possibly be at least tangentially related to the upcoming Schwarz/Christoph/Lillian debacle though.
I can't really respond to your Jennette post right now but she should be getting some company soon.))
After picking up Christoph, on her way out the door, Schwarz saw Valentine at the end of the hall. The two of them had hardly spoken in the three or four years since Schwarz had taken her as a "friend," a cover. She had sort of wondered if at least maintaining a colleague relationship with the girl would be possible, simply because she had become so familiar, but while she had been expecting an episode of cognitive dissonance or a barrage of questions or at least some sense of betrayal, she had gotten the words "I don't care." No betrayal meant no trust had been built. Lillian had felt nothing akin to friendship at all. Served her right for feeling some semblance of hope. It was just another addition to a long list of reasons she'd been building since she was a teenager of why friends were a waste of time. The drive home was uneventful. Christoph had a few small comments about his day but nothing of substance. The walk to the front door was just as uneventful. Until Schwarz heard the faintest whoosh of air behind her, felt a blinding pain in the back of her head, and presently realized she was no longer holding Christoph's hand or standing upright. She lay on the front porch, dazed, her vision pulsating between black and white, with spare snatches of reality in between. And in those snatches, all she could see were the eyes of Wolfgang Möer. In her last moment of consciousness, all she could think was how she could not be taken to an ordinary hospital, how nobody could be permitted to find her like this. She attempted to induce a shift into a robin. She could not tell whether she was successful.
Archer nodded. There was no use to try and argue with the lieutenant. After all, he did know the prisoner better than anyone. "Would you like me to question the girl as well? Or do you have someone else in mind for that?" he asked instead. Schreod stopped and thought about that. He had certainly wanted to talk to her, but... "She does not like me." He chuckled. "Not that I gave her much reason to. Not that she deserved it. Thinking on it, I do doubt that she would ever open up to me. You, though... she doesn't know you." A grin began to curve his mouth. "How good are you at feigning kindness and warmth towards WhiteKingdom scum?"
Sabel furrowed her brow. She knew all the words but couldn't find meaning in them the way they were put together. However, based on the inflections in Destiny's voice, she could take a reasonable guess. She crossed her legs and placed the tray on her lap, saying haltingly, "Yes. Four food times all days."
Sure enough, inside ten minutes Ava was finished with all her work. She excitedly ran to grab Dinsmore's leash, leaving the dog alone with Nichole for a moment. As always, he pushed his face into her hand, licking it with gusto. He liked this new twoleg. She always smelled good, familiar. Kind of like dog. Leastways less like a twoleg than most twolegs, though his taller master was another exception to that. The small one, not so much. He liked her fine--she treated him very well--but her scent was very ordinary. He pushed his nose into the new twoleg's shirt and sniffed vigorously.
"That's very kind of you." He took a long sip of his coffee, and then raised it in a toast-like gesture. "Perfect, as always. Do they give you special trainings to make these?" As he spoke, he pulled a five-pound note from his pocket and slid it across the counter to her, adding as an afterthought, "Keep the change."

"As good as I can show ruthlessness without mercy," Archer replied. He was good at putting on a different face with anyone he meet. It was what came natural to him, especially now that he was a shifter. The man had always been good with lies, but it wasn't until he gained the ability to change his form that he began to master the skill. Before he would deliver lines with neutral emotions. Now he could slip into any role he needed to play as if slipping into a new form. He was theatrical at times, yes, when he didn't have a specific character to play. He hadn't quite built his own character up yet. "I assume, sir, that you want me to make her believe she has a friend among enemies?"
~*
Four food times. At least they weren't starved, Destiny thought. Reaching out, she grabbed hold of he bread and took a tentative bit. It was nothing like she was used to, but it wasn't bad either. Shifting so she was sitting cross legged on the floor, the girl ate her food in silence.
~*
Nichole remained seated. Ava would return soon enough, so there was no point going to follow her. With a smile, she rubbed the dog's face and ears gently. "Good boy," she cooed. The young woman always had a way with animals. Ever since she began a shifter, it was almost like animals knew she wasn't a threat. Of course, she could never approach wild animals unless she took on their form as well, but pets loved her and birds were less shy in her presence. She wondered if it was like that for all shifters, or if maybe she was thinking too highly of herself.
~*
"Yes, actually. You'd be surprised at how long I had to wrestle with the coffee maker before I could fill orders decently," Faith admitted with a sheepish smile. Taking the note, she had mentally calculating how much change she would need to give him, but there was no need. Her smile grew. "Thank you," she said. Many customers would have thrown a fit if they didn't get their change back. Faith couldn't say she blamed them.

Let all the shade begin
Well heres the thing- i would usually be all for let's destroy our characters yaaahhh
But in Colmac's nature, he would gladly hunt down whoever makes his live miserable and take them out. So if we want drama there i guess im all for it haha.
And for the ques- well.. Because Agent isn't a term recognized by Military standards, she wouldn't necessarily be at any military base. Its more likely she's working with a CIA or FBI Germany Equivalent. That being said, it would go along with the morality standards of the person. Would they respect the person or what do they view 'emselves to the military person, etc. its also considering the fact that if the agents were part of the military field, they'd be a branch off of the Army, and be trained to go behind enemy lines, kinda like a Green Beret. Despite their special titles- they still have the rankings of a normal branch of the military.
It just depends on if she would be Captain, or above Captain at a rank like Lieutenant
--
Also idk what to say for Colmac haha))

"An astute assumption." Schreod leaned back, steepling his fingers beneath his chin. "From reading her file and talking to those who were there the day she took my brother from our home base, together with what she has said since we brought her in, I gather that she had felt... uncomfortable with our methods, but the tipping point was finding out what was done to her mother. She died as a result of a test. Unfortunate, and of course accidental, but unsurprisingly, she didn't take it well. Burned down an entire hallway and several labs and fled with my brother in tow, tripping balls from post-biting sickness." He sucked in a breath. "My point is, perhaps if you make yourself appear to be just like she was. Nothing too detailed, or she'd certainly get suspicious, but if she saw herself in you..."
((Another time skip with Destiny and Sabel, since I doubt anything would really happen before their free hours in the evening. Feel free to speak against this.))
At 7pm sharp, their door automatically unlocked. Sabel descended her ladder and stood stretching for a moment. For her at least, there was nothing particularly exciting about these two hours, but it was nice to be able to wander the halls, even if their clearance was very limited. They could mingle with the other prisoners and eat in the small dining hall on the first floor--though Sabel always elected to eat alone regardless. Of course, there were always plenty of guards watching their every move, but the small degree of freedom was welcome.
Ava returned, bearing the leash. As she hooked it onto Dinsmore's collar, the dog didn't stop sniffing Nichole, and she looked up at the woman curiously. "How do you get him to like you so much? Do you carry around, like, catnip, but for dogs?"
"No problem at all," said Nate, flashing his friendliest smile. "So how long did you worked here, Faith?" He hoped he was getting that tense right.
((Right. The RK and WK bases aren't conventional military bases; they're also centers for the espionage division [we don't have a name for that but maybe we should make one] and analyst work and scientific experiments. Really huge buildings.
But regarding the "I know your brother is holding your other brother captive" bit, Colmac really wouldn't have known that unless he did some very stealthy and illegal digging. So did he, or did that part of the conversation not happen?
EDIT: Just realized that "Bring on the shade" is probably consent. Wasn't sure before what you meant. So, why exactly did he do that? Is he a little bit crazy with his dedication to the cause or?))

okay that makes sense. the military is there just as guards
ah most likely dedication. I'll make up more of his reasoning and his dedication, etc. as we go along, because I got a majority of his base morals down, but also he doesn't really trust anyone aside from the authority that's currently above him. He probably did it to make sure he wasn't going to be in any recent danger))

Archer nodded, listening carefully to this information. "Here by force, not by choice," he said. "An injured party who didn't know what they were getting into until it was too late. I think I can manage that. Is there anything else I should know? Any specific information you would like for me to get?"
~*
(Nah, time skip is fine.)
Destiny had taken a seat on the floor, leaning up against the bed. Breakfast hadn't been too spectacular, and she had guessed the rest of her day would match. However, at the sound of their door unlocking, the girl turned her attention to the door. "Qué es eso?" she asked Sabel slowly as the other girl headed for the door, trying to be careful with her pronunciation even though it was a simple question
~*
Nichole laughed. "Something like that," she replied, reaching into her pocket and producing a small dog treat. She always cared one with her. It was a great cover for why certain dogs were drawn to her. She gave the treat to Dinsmore before standing up.
~*
Faith giggled softly at his miss usage of verb tense, but didn't call him out on it. "I've been working hear for five years now," she replied, leaning slightly on the counter. Nate must not had to be anywhere if he was still talking, so she made herself comfortable. "It's been a part time thing while I'm finishing college."

((Dawn- I don't remember it that well either, but I think it lasted around a year, and Schwarz was going by Yvonne Simon and I think pretending to be some kind of computer analyst or maybe linguist, I forget exactly. Let's say linguist. She dyed her hair brown and got a tan and wore colored contacts and dressed differently and changed her accent and all that jazz, and she made up this whole backstory about how the WhiteKingdom killed her brother and she told Lillian all this, but it was fake. When Jennette and whoever else broke into the base to free Felix and several other captured shifters, she was forced to reveal herself, and she led them all out of there. She invited Lillian to join the WK, and Lillian's reaction to the whole reveal was pretty underwhelming, and every interaction they had afterwards [no more than two have actually been Rped out] was brief and awkward.
RM- I've actually just had an idea for something Colmac could do. Some characters Dawn and I have are about to be involved in a plotline wherein... well, it's kind of complicated. I'll summarize it later, when I have time. But for Colmac, it would involve tracking down a psychotically dangerous dishonorably discharged RK general who has gone rogue and needs to be contained. I would send at least one more RK member with Colmac if the three others we had weren't all occupied...
Amber- I just added you to the front page; sorry it took so long. Just so you know, in order for Ivy to have a bracelet she would have to know an older shifter, a member of the RK or WK, because they stopped making those things in the late 90s. Unless you have another idea for how she could have found one; I'm open to suggestions.))
Schreod was silent for a moment. "Just... anything you can find out about Felix. As for specifics, I do not recommend trying to get into this immediately, but I suppose primarily, I want to know... if they did anything to him. What they have been telling him since Joanna revealed herself. Quite honestly, he may be unstable. He always was before. If they used that to their advantage... well, I should like to know of their methods."
Sabel elected not to say anything aloud in response, only pull Destiny gently by the wrist through the door. Outside, the children who lived in their hall, aged 8 to 14, were stepping into the hallway, all dressed almost identically, only some had a green stripe on their sleeves and still others had both green and blue. The hall stretched about twenty metres in either direction and most rooms within their line of sight were emptying. The majority of the kids began to mill about, heading for the end of the hall to descend to the dining area or perhaps to visit other prisoners they had received special permission to see. "Two hours," Sabel said in elaboration.
Ava gave a little laugh as she watched Dinsmore gobble up the treat, satisfied with this explanation, and then led the dog outside. She enjoyed the walk immensely, chattering away about the book she was reading and what her friends had done the previous weekend.
((Hmm, I'm trying to think of how we could jumpstart this plotline, and I think the most straightforward way to do that would be to have Nichole accidentally shift where Ava can see it. Thoughts?))
His eyes widened in genuine alarm. "Five years at the same job? How can you stand it?"

"Of course. I might be able to approach the subject from a concern point of view after a few weeks," Archer said. "I'll be sure not to rush anything, and whatever I find out, I'll report to you at once."
~*
Destiny followed Sabel out into the hallway. She had been through here last night, but she hardly paid any attention to it. As more kids filed out around them, he eyes scanned for any familiar faces. When she saw none, she studied the halls. "Is the sick room nearby?" she couldn't stop from asking. "The médico?"
~*
Nichole let the little girl talk. Ever now and then, she would make a comment or ask a question to let her know she was listening. Ava generally talked enough for the both of them, but she didn't mind. The young woman could remember her own stories of when she was that age, so she knew how easy it was to chatter on about everything and anything. So while Ava did the talking, Nichole led the way to find food.
(I think that would be the most realistic. Maybe Ava could fall asleep, and Nichole thought it would be safe to switch forms for a moment. Or should they run into something coming back from town that Nichole instinctively shifts without realizing it?)
~*
"It's not that bad," Faith told him with a laugh. "It's only part time, but I wouldn't mind if I worked full time here. I get all the muffins and coffee I can drink, and I get to meet a lot of interesting people everyday. I wouldn't say it's terrible."

((Mm, based on her description she really wouldn't have access to that kind of technology at all. She'll just have to rough it without one.))
"Excellent," said Schreod. Archer had proven himself time and again to indeed be an effective soldier, free of emotional attachment and highly intelligent. He felt confident in the man's abilities to extract this information, though he didn't doubt it would take some time. Fortunately, time was something they had plenty of.
That word meant "doctor" but Sabel was pretty sure she'd heard the English word "room." "The infirmary?" she asked. There was another term for it in English but she couldn't remember what it was. Assuming an affirmative answer, she started towards the stairs.
Ava contentedly led Dinsmore along, chattering endlessly, but also looking both ways before crossing the street, keeping an eye on her watch, and never losing track of the people in her near vicinity, as her father had taught her.
((Hmm... if you can think of a good reason for her to shift while Ava's sleeping I might prefer that, just because it's simpler, but if not I'm sure we can invent some sort of danger to trigger an instinctive shift.))
"Hmm," Nate responded, unconvinced. He'd never been particularly fond of long-term commitment to anything. That had improved a bit since he'd joined the WhiteKingdom, but even there, they expected something different from him every day. There was no monotony, no trivialities, no room for boredom. "The free stuff sounds great," he conceded. "And meeting people. Two of my favorite things, really."

"I will get started right away," Archer said, rising to his feet. He nodded to the lieutenant before turning to show himself out of the office. Already, his mind was forming a plan that would gain the trust of the woman. It sounded as if it would be an easy job if he could play his cards right.
~*
Destiny nodded eagerly. "Yes!" she said. She wanted to ask if Sabel knew where it was, but she didn't know if she knew the correct wording for the question. She she hoped that her companion would understand he longing to find it by the tone of her voice.
~*
"That cafe is still open," Nichole pointed out after a few moments. She had visited the place many times, so she knew that they offered many small, home-made meals they could take home with them. "Want to go there and pick something up?"
(Maybe she hears something outside and thinks it'd be better to have two guard dogs than one? Or she could just do it because she hadn't had a chance to shift in a while? Nichole likes being a shifter, so changing for no real reason would be something she would do if she believed no one would be around to witness it.)
~*
"It is just until I finish school," Faith said, almost a bit sadly. With a degree in journalism, she would need to start focusing on finding a job in her field. It would be hard, but she was more than willing for the challenge. It was just sad to think she wouldn't be able to work at the cafe anymore. She had made so many friends and had many good times there.

"Pleased to hear it, Archer," said Schreod. "I know you won't let us down." It was a genuine vote of confidence, but it was also a warning. With Schreod, the former never came without the latter. He sat back, and picked up his pen, beginning to take notes. Without looking up at Archer he said, "Thank you, Sergeant; that will be all."
((Hopefully Dawn gets on soon. Also, I'm approximating his rank, since there isn't one included in his form. It depends; though; how long has he actually been serving with the RK?))
Sabel nodded, and pointed up the stairs, disappearing through the doorway, trusting Destiny to follow.
Ava had in fact never been to the café that Nichole pointed out, so she was excited by the idea, but a thought occurred to her that stopped her from moving any further forward. "Do they allow dogs?" she asked worriedly. Very, very few businesses allowed any animals nowadays, given the rise of awareness of shapeshifters.
((Hmm, I like the second one. It'll also give her something to angst over later, if you'd like that option.))
Finish school, Nate echoed in his mind, more than a little wistfully. Shaking himself immediately out of it, he asked, "And when will be that?"

(I was thinking that he joined the RK military as soon as he was old enough to enlist. So place him in whatever rank you want him to be. I hadn't thought of his rank when I made him.)
Archer couldn't help but feel a rush of satisfaction. The lieutenant didn't pass around compliments for no reason. He had worked hard all his time in the RK to be worthy of such praise, and he wasn't about to do anything to jeopardize it now. Letting himself out of the office, he made his way first to the kitchen. The man put together a small tray of food, nothing fancy but more than what normal prisoners were given. Then he carried the food to the cell where the woman was being held.
~*
Destiny didn't hesitate. She hurried up the stairs after Sabel. The possibility that she wouldn't be allowed to enter the infirmary crossed her mind, but she didn't want to think of that. Somehow, she would get to see Kurt. He will know how to get out of this mess.
~*
That was a very good question. One that Nichole hadn't thought about. "I'm not sure," she admitted. "We'll find out soon. If they don't, I'll ask to see if you can stay inside by the door while I order. Since we're taking it to go, maybe they won't kick us out."
(Well I do love angst. XD The second option it is!)
~*
"The end of next year," Faith replied. "I would have been finished earlier, but I started college later than most. Plus I changed my major three times. So I'm a little behind schedule."

((Okay. Let's make him a Sergeant First Class then. I'll be honest, I actually don't know a lot at all about how militaries run or what people of each rank actually do; the function of assigning ranks is mostly just to see which characters are subordinate to which others.))
The infirmary was on the first level above the ground floor. The walk was short, and soon they came to a double door with two guards standing in front of it. "Visitors?" one asked gruffly in German, peering down at the two small girls under his glasses.
"Maybe," said Ava dubiously.
((Excellent! Feel free to summarize whatever happens inside the café.))
Nate wasn't sure what any of this really entailed, though he kind of knew in a fuzzy sort of way that changing your mayor could mess you up. He said as much, like he knew what he was talking about: "I can see how that would mess you up."
((Feel free, RM. I more meant it would be good to have somebody else to play off of, so you're not just writing a story by yourself about the search instead of really Rping. I might go ahead and make a new RK character, though goodness knows I have a lot of characters...))

(Same here. I don't know much about their jobs. All I know is who is over who.)
Destiny stopped behind Sabel as they reached the guard. She didn't know much German, just the occasion rouge word that people liked to use every now and then. But the tone of his voice seemed to say that he was asking a question. "Ja," she said, hoping that he had asked a yes or no question.
~*
(Okay!)
Nichole led them across the street. Advising Ava to keep Dinsmore close to her, she made her way to the counter. Before the woman behind the counter could speak, she asked if it would be alright for the girl and her pet to wait by the door, explaining that they would only be inside until they placed their order to go. The employee glanced at Ava with a hesitant look before nodding. Nichole add that she didn't want the girl to stay outside in case someone got the idea to take her. You never knew who might do such a thing these days. The cashier sighed and agreed, making Nichole released a small sigh of relief.
It was ten minutes before their food was ready. Nichole, who had moved to stand beside Ava, hurried over to the counter, paid for their meal, and then carried the bag of food over to the door. "Alright, dinner is ready," she said, smiling. "Lets get back home so we can enjoy it."

He was the second oldest, with a brother as the elder and one more brother, before a sister, and then a baby brother. His mother died while giving birth to his final sibling, and was then forced to help raise his siblings. His father wasn't really there, as he was helping those Shifters while he grew up. Because he saw his father caring more for the SS more than his family, he's grown to a big distaste. When his youngest sibling was well enough and didn't depend on milk, Lope moved to a RK controlled area- France- and has lived there since then. Sadly, on their move, he lost his older brother to a skirmish between the SS and their little sibling fiesta, and has since then vowed to extract revenge on his father for his lack of parental ways, and for the SS who wrongly attacked his brother. Since he's 25, his younger brother would be about the age of 23, his sister 18, and his youngest brother 14. This being, he trusts that his younger brother will help raise the two youngest despite his sister being a legal adult. He does visit his siblings when he can, and has since then announced to them he was raised to the rank of First Lieutenant. Because of this, he has been known to address Captains, and higher ranking men and women, with respect and a salute. Other- Lope speaks fluent Spanish, French, and English. He's rusty in German.

((You're good to go with Lope! Yay Spain.))
"Who is the patient?" the guard asked, turning to the electronic keypad on the wall. Sabel watched Destiny worriedly through her peripherals, hoping she'd recognize the word "who" and be able to extrapolate the rest.
They walked home, Ava hoping that her dad wouldn't mind this, or, more preferable, wouldn't find out about it at all. He never got mad, but Ava really couldn't stand his disappointment. When they arrived they got out their food and began to eat. Ava realized she was very hungry, and didn't say much as she chowed down.
Nate knew he was only 23 and he had a lifetime ahead of him of people asking that question since he wasn't going to look significantly older for many, many years, but it had been seven years since he'd been to a real school so it still grated. "Work," he said simply, staring into his coffee as he stirred it. "Tech support at a construction company."

Destiny hesitated a moment, running through her memory for all the German words she knew. Did he ask who or where? If they were wanting to visit, then he would have asked "who", right? "My friend who was with me," she said. "His name is Kurt."

Nichole knew the rules Donald had laid out. He had made sure when she was first hired to be Ava's babysitter that she understood the Dos and Don'ts of caring for his daughter. A few rules seemed a little strict, but she didn't say anything to him. What good would it do to make the man made before she even started her job? Nichole had been careful to follow all instructions Donald set. They never wandered outside after dark. They never went too far from home. They never really left the house much period. On rare occasions did she give in to let Ava have a few moments outside to play in the warm evenings, just to help get rid of her extra energy. Ava was a good child that deserved a break every now and then. What harm would come of treating her to time outside or food from a dinner?
"Ugh, I think I ordered too much for myself," Nichole stated, pushing her empty Styrofoam. container away from her on the table. The food had been delicious. So much so, the young woman felt as if she let herself eat much more than she should have.

"Sounds interesting," Faith said. She wasn't a tech person herself; she did good to know how to use her laptop. "I bet there's always something for you to do."

The guard paused, telling himself it would be unprofessional to roll his eyes. English, but no German. Typical. He scanned the list, and his eyes landed on the only Kurt present. After punching the code in, he stood back as the door opened automatically and looked down at the girl again. "You have until 9. You may enter." The door finished opening to reveal a long white hallway, immaculately clean, with a line of hospital beds on either side of it divided by sea foam green curtains.
Ava stifled a little burp of her own, and giggled. "You? Too much food?" Based on what she'd seen, Nichole ate at least almost as much as Dad, and he could put away a shocking amount of food. He never let Ava eat nearly as much, though--not that she could, but when she tried, he'd stop her. She never really understood why but it had been years since she'd questioned it.
((That's not a commentary on Nichole or Daniel, but on shifters in general. There's a blurb on the front page about their dietary habits. Also I'm going to start calling her Anja in her inner narrative; I thought it would be less confusing to use Ava but at this point it's bothering me because it doesn't make sense.))
He nodded. "And it's always something different. Sometimes they call me Jack. Y'know, jack of all trades." Master of none, he finished silently.

Destiny hesitated. Inside the open doors, she could see all the beds lining the hall. Glancing at the guard, she didn't know if he was going to show her the way or not. He didn't move, so she assumed he wasn't. Slowly, she walked past the man and entered the infirmary.

Nichole laughed. The girl had a point. Being a shifter meant she needed more food than ordinary people. She was just glad that she was able to work off the calories so that the food didn't catch up to her. "I think I overdid it, even for me," she admitted. "I feel like I'm ready to hibernate.
(That's fine. I'll just have to remember to keep calling her Ava, lol. If I call her Anja, I'm either tired, or trying to multi-task and forgot.)

Faith giggled. "Well, Jack, I may have to borrow you sometime. My computer is acting glitchy, but I've been too cheap to go get it fixed by the store I bought it from," she said, smiling to let him know she was joking.

Sabel followed and stepped in front of Destiny, taking the lead and moving decisively. She figured she'd just guide her along the long room at a reasonable pace until the other girl stopped at a bed. Kurt, as it happened, was in a bed about two-thirds of the way from the front of the room, dressed in a hospital gown, the pallor of his skin shockingly similar to the sheets. He was awake, but not entirely sharp, as a steady stream of morphine entered his body through an IV.
Now that she thought of it, she was tired too... She didn't want to admit that, though. She stood up, and began to clean up her spot at the table. "Let's watch a movie," she suggested.
((To clarify, they don't need to "work off" the extra calories; they need the calories because they burn them with the energy it takes to shift regularly.))
He grinned back. "It would be my genuine pleasure, ma'am. But only if you make me some coffee in return."
((Gotta go, sorry.))

Kurt blinked, processing what was happening, until he finally realized. "Destiny!" he cried, taking her into his arms, but immediately grimacing. He hadn't yet had a chance to view the damage to his back, and he'd only worn up recently so nobody had told him yet, but from the pain he felt every second, blessedly muted by morphine, he knew it was extensive. His first instinct was to push through and keep hugging Destiny anyway, but his second told him how unwise that would be. He released her onto the bed next to him and sat back carefully, saying in a strained voice, "Off, off, off."
Anja blinked, frankly having completely forgotten about it, but when Nichole immediately demonstrated possible acceptance of her proposal she shrugged, trying to act casual. "I dunno. The Lion King?"
"It's a date." Crap, he was definitely flirting now. Immediately he moved on to what he'd been edging towards anyway: standing up and saying, "Gotta get to work, but I suppose I'll be seeing you around. Pleasure to meet you, Faith."
