Ploverpaw glanced around the makeshift camp, wondering where to fit into the throng of bustling clanmates. I should find Furyflame, she’ll be able to tell me what to do. Uneasily, she made her way around the busy warriors while keeping her eyes peeled for her mentor.

(Hey, Voceb! Blazer and I both rp Grasslight and Dashclaw, their kits are Antpaw, Weaselpaw, and Soarpaw. If you want, Ploverpaw could be a part of that litter to give her a family.)

Furyflame paced, her tail lashing as she awaited any kind of news. Surely they could go back to camp soon! She was never much of a patient cat, though it was also the cold stone under her paws that ticked her off. She noticed Ploverpaw approaching and her ears perked.
“Good, thank Starclan. Something to do. Ploverpaw! You looking for me?”

Ploverpaw’s eyes lit up as she heard her mentor call out to her. “Oh, yes!” She replied, bounding over to stand in front of Furyflame. Immediately she noticed her flicking tail, understanding her irritations. “I guess we’re both feeling a bit at a loss of what to do from here? It’s so weird being in this camp. I keep hearing whispers about adders or something. I don’t want to have to outrun a fire and get bit by a snake today!”

Shouldn’t be a problem for us.” Furyflame offered a small smirk, though the thought of adders slithering around did not please the brown she-cat. She looked at Ploverpaw and stood to her paws. “I think now more than ever is a good time to practice your tracking skills. Let’s see if we can find some prey out there.”

Following after her mentor swiftly, Ploverpaw couldn’t help herself from smiling. “Great! I haven’t had a chance to hone in on those yet.” Seeing patrols leaving and cats talking tightly together, the tension in the camp was still evident, though, and her smile faltered slightly. “Uh, where will we be tracking? Isn’t most everything still.. burned?” She asked, stil absentmindedly gazing.

“That’s the reason why we’re going to get in some tracking. With all the burnt scents, we have to train ourselves to scent beneath it. If you can track a rabbit after a fire, then you know you’ve got it down!” Furyflame exclaimed before she hesitated. “Er...Let’s just try out towards the bottom of Highstones for now.”

Nerves making her paws prickle, the slight she-cat returned her attention to her mentor. Ploverpaw had never been the greatest at discerning the different scents the moor offered, and it would be a challenge to please both her mentor and herself during this task. I owe it to my clan to give it my best, though! If this is what Furyflame thinks will make me the best warrior, then I have to give it my all. When the two finally reached the bottom of High Stones, Ploverpaw gaped her mouth and let the scents wash over her tongue. Immediately the scorched earth’s rancid smell overtook her senses and she gagged audibly. “Oh, that’s pretty bad.” She mewed in a small, dry voice.

Beyond that burnt smell, what else can you pick up?" She inquired, flicking her ears sternly yet approvingly.

Despite her disgust, Ploverpaw let out a small mrrow of laughter at Furyflame’s jab at Shadowclan. After a moment of bracing herself for the horrid stench, she opened her mouth and allowed the scents to swathe over her tongue once more. The scents mingled all together, threatening you make her gag once more. Then, a faint trace of familiar scent reached her nose. “I smell... something.” She whispered, suddenly unsure of herself. She took a deeper breath. “I think it’s rabbit.”

Leaning over to scent the air herself, Furyflame nodded once, a flicker of pride filling her orange eyes. "That's right! I knew you had a strong nose. If we're lucky, it hasn't gone far and we can track it down. The clan needs all it can eat right now. Tell you what. We catch this rabbit, and I'll show you one of the more advanced battle moves. Sound like a deal?" The brown she-cat offered.

Swiftstar sat near the ledge he had addressed the clan on, his chest tight again. He felt frustration prickle under his pelt. How was he supposed to lead his clan if he could barely move without coughing? He let out a small cough.

Wolfstep followed behind the patrol, climbing up towards the highstones camp. His face was neutral as he fought an inner battle of despair for their territory and optimism for the rebuilding.
Fallowmeadow moved to where Sandfall and Pigeonsong had placed the water soaked moss, grabbing one before returning to Swiftstar. "Here." she mewed quietly, dropping the moss in front of him. "Hopefully Eclipsesky and Dawnshadow will be back soon. Don't say you don't need more treatment. Because you obviously do."

Ploverpaw felt bashful as Furyflame praised her scenting skill, but her embarrassment quickly turned to excitement at the prospect of battle practice. “Oh, definitely a deal!” She purred brightly, turning with determination to scent the air again. However nervous she may be, she trusted Furyflame would be right beside her. The scent was still faint, but now Ploverpaw felt more sure of where it was coming from. Nose near the ground, she traced it a few fox-lengths forward. As the smell began to grow thick, the apprentice looked up, realizing that only a few bounds away a rabbit sat grazing. Unsure of herself once more, she turned to look at Furyflame, angling her ears to the rabbit. What next?

Furyflame gazed at the rabbit with intense eyes, her body poising to break into a sprint. Even so, she knew she would have to quell her impatience. This was Ploverpaw’s opportunity, after all. The brown she-cat nodded lightly and mewed. “I want you to quickly and quietly circle around, and spook it towards me. Think you can do that?”

Swiftstar let out a sigh at his mate's insistence. "The clan can't know about this Fallowmeadow." he said softly. "I don't understand. StarClan should have healed me when I lost my life, and sometimes I'm fine....but other times it's like all I can breathe is smoke."
Fawnspots followed her brother and the rest of the patrol.

Ploverpaw nodded agreement, immediately dropping to a hunting crouch. To her relief, she found the breeze that gently swayed the grass was hitting her face, meaning she was downwind from her prey. Stalking silently, with extra care to keep her tail up and pawsteps light, she reached around the side of the rabbit with no problem. Then, as the cream colored she-cat was just about to have the advantage in front of the rabbit, she felt her tail brush the ground heavily. A slight scratching noise ensued, alerting the rabbit. The animal’s ears shot upright and it swiftly turned towards the open moor. Before she could think, Ploverpaw pushed off the ground with strong hind legs and jumped in front of the rabbit, startling it back towards Furyflame.

Fallowmeadow's frown deepened as she settled beside him, almost afraid to leave his side at this point. "Well you were in the territory after you lost your life." she whispered back. "Starclan can heal what you had when you died, but not problems you got afterwards."

Swiftstar nodded. "The clan can't know." He said, bending to lap up some of the water, which cleared some of the tightness in his chest. "They need to look to me right now to rebuild. I can't be weak now when they need me."

Furyflame noticed the slip-up, though she felt a wave of relief when she realized that Ploverpaw had reeled the rabbit back onto the right track. Furyflame flexed her claws before she bolted, swift paws sending her dashing towards the rabbit. Furyflame’s speed outmatched the panicked prey, and she lunged onto it, biting its neck quickly.

Fallowmeadow sighed but reluctantly nodded. "As long as you don't push yourself to hard, and perhaps go check in with Dawnshadow and Eclipsesky when the camp is calm. I won't tell anyone. But it seems like you can hardly hold in the coughing sometimes. What are you going to do if you're addressing the clan and break out into a fit?"

Swiftstar sighed. "It seems to be getting better at least. If I'm not moving around too much it's manageable. I just won't be able to go on too many hunting or battle patrols for the near future....hopefully I'll be able to help rebuild."

Furyflame snickered lightly. “Well. You slipped up at first, but you were quick to correct yourself and guide the rabbit back where we needed it. We caught the rabbit, so I keep my end of the deal. Of course we can do some battle practice!” She waved her tail, enthusiastic and bold.

Fallowmeadow purred at the mention of home. “Im about worried about what we’ll come back to but I can’t help wanting to be on the moor again. Being back here at highstones brings back bad memories.”
