"I'll use the small stones first." Larkpaw replied, moving towards their pile of silt and gravel. She carefully filled in the cracks between the large stones before slowly filling in the whole space. "There! All done Siltpath." she exclaimed proudly.
Sagefoot blinked in surprise, she hadn't really thought of that before. What would happen when Swiftstar wasn't leader anymore. She frowned, eyes flicking to the den Fallowmeadow had disappeared in. "Swiftstar is a young leader with plenty of lives left. I have a long time until it could possibly be my turn to be leader." she laughed quietly, "Wow... Sagestar. It does have a nice sound to it doesn't it?" she asked, voice soft. There was no greed or hunger for power present in her voice, just the quiet confidence of a cat who actually had a chance at leadership.

Siltpath poked his head in, able to see behind Larkpaw and purr proudly. "Ah! Excellent job! That's got to be the best first fill in I've ever seen!" He backed out and mewed. "Now, come on out here and we can begin the easy part. It's kind of fun too, if you like kicking dirt." He chuckled.
"It's a beautiful name, for a beautiful deputy." Stonepath mewed, genuine and gentle. He looked at Sagefoot and gave a knowing and somewhat wistful smile. "Swiftstar has chosen cats he surely knew would not succeed him, but would support him. I believe you are able to do both. It's the fact that you have no sight for ambition that makes you the best choice. Whatever happens, you know that I will always do everything I can to support you." He promised.

Larkpaw giggled as she scampered to the entrance of the tunnel to join her mentor. A wide grin on her face, "A tunneler's work isn't done until their fur is covered in dirt right?"
Sagefoot took a bite of the blackbird, purring quietly at the richer taste of the prey fattened in the midst of greenleaf. "You've always been here for me Stonepath. It is the truest thing I know. I couldn't do this without you." The deputy leaned over to her mate, touching her nose to his cheek in silent thanks.

"That's right! I think that's one of your mother's sayings, I swear I've heard her say it before." Siltpath chuckled, turning towards the larger piles of sand, dirt, and tiny stones, a large slurry of material. He planted his paws into the pile and started pushing the mounds of dirt down the tunnel slope, delighted in how it began to easily fill in. "See? Easy as catching a blade of grass!"
"I believe you could, but I wouldn't want you to." Stonepath purred, deep and graveled as he touched his nose to hers, eyes glinting with calm humor. "I'd be a real rabbit brain to have not wanted to be your mate all those moons ago. I'm glad, that we were brave about it, and just admitted it." He took a bite of the bird, sighing with delight. "I'm glad they're flying back. My favorite."

Larkpaw copied Siltpath's movements, pushing the earth into the entrance of the tunnel. Once the entrance was no longer visible, Larkpaw sat back. Pleased, but visibly tired from all the work of the training session. "That was a lot! But I'm happy we won't have any cat accidentally falling into that useless tunnel."
"You've always been brave," Sagefoot answered with a smile, taking another bite of the bird. "I'm glad we chose each other though, I am happiest with you by my side. I would catch every blackbird in our territory for you if I could."

"It's a pretty good feeling, huh? Even if any cat never knew a tunnel was even here before, it's the idea that we prevented anyone from getting hurt that's most important. The best Warriors are the ones who never need to be thanked, but who do the work regardless." Siltpath mewed, smiling softly as he looked at his apprentice. He really was lucky, that he got to be the one to teach her. It made him truly feel like he was a Windclan cat, that he did belong here.
"Not if I catch them all for you first." Stonepath grinned lightly, though his heart was warmed by her dedication to him, as equal as his was to her. He mewed. "I always hoped one day that I could understand just how much my mother loved my father, even if I never knew him. Now, I understand. It's... a perfect feeling."

Larkpaw let Siltpath's final words sink in, repeating them softly to herself, "The best warriors are the ones who never need to be thanked, but who do the work regardless." She purred, knowing that both her parents believed in these ideals, she was always striving to follow in their pawsteps. "I will remember that, Thank you Siltpath. It is a good lesson to keep in mind."
Sagefoot felt a pang of sadness at Stonepath's statement, knowing that her mother must have felt like this for Cloudscar. She wondered if her mother had ever been jealous of cats like them, able to display their love loudly. "I hope our kits will one day know a love just as great and that they will never doubt our love for each other or for them," she murmured, resting her tail alongside his. "Larkpaw and Juniperpaw are already overflowing with joy and love, I pray to Starclan that no cat takes advantage of that."

"What can I say? I'm a very poetic tom." Siltpath joked, though it was clear he was very warmed by her compliment. Is this what the senior Warriors felt like, when the rest of the Clan looked up to them so highly? He nodded quickly. "I'll be sure to tell Sagefoot and Stonepath about your work today. If anyone deserves the praise, it's you, Larkpaw. Be proud!"
Stonepath promised, deep and firm. "I'll give my life before I ever let anything happen to our daughters. Or to you." He nearly bristled at the thought of anyone ever taking advantage of their daughters' kindness and love. They were the best things that ever happened to him.

Larkpaw looked at her paws, bashful at her mentor's praise, she couldn't help the beaming smile on her face though. "I am proud of the work we've done today Siltpath. You're a great mentor! Thank you for teaching me everything you know." Her paws bounced cheerily over the moor as they made their way back to camp, the welcoming ache of hard work completed pulling her paws toward her nest.
Sagefoot twined their tails together, leaning her head against Stonepath's shoulder. "We will protect them together. Against any threat, that stands in front of them. I will fight for them until my very last breath." she smiled softly, thinking of the promising young cats they've become. "I'm so proud of them, they've taken to their training so well. They'll be fine warriors some day."

Siltpath allowed her to lead the way back, though the entire time he was practically beaming with pride. Tinyflower had to hear about this! He hoped his sister would get an apprentice of her own soon, he loved it! He slipped into camp after her, waving his tail brightly to their Clanmates.
Stonepath pressed his muzzle gently to her ear as she pressed close to him, before he glanced up and spotted a very content looking Larkpaw scampering right into camp. He smiled. "It looks like you're right on the nose with that. Larkpaw looks as happy as a hare in newleaf." He nodded to their daughter.

Larkpaw dipped her head to Siltpath, "See you later!" she called before disappearing into the tall grass where her nest was. She settled into it with a yawn and she fell into sleep easily.
Sagefoot purred at the sight, warmth flooding through her as their daughter disappeared into her nest. "How did we get so lucky?" she whispered mostly to herself. She shook her head, turning to look at Stonepath once more. "Enough of this talk, tell me about your day. I haven't seen you since sunrise."
