Roostkit blinked, still getting used to the world around him. He could see his brother and sisters and mother, and sometimes his father. The young kit stared up at Soulspirit, tilting his head. "Mama?" He squeaked. "Shh!" Bouncekit complained, trying to snuggle into his mother's fur farther. Soulspirit looked down at Roostkit and gave a purr, “Hello, little one.” She mewed, licking the top of her son’s head, “I see your eyes have opened.” Eaglekit was chasing after Soulspirit’s tail, the she-kit’s eyes had opened a little while ago, and she was impatient to get out of the nursery and see the camp. Morningkit was slowly opening her own eyes, looking around the nursery slowly. “Hi mama.” Roostkit gave a large yawn, his little teeth showing before he tilted his head up at his mother. “You look really big!” Bouncekit shifted again, all the noise making him open his own eyes. He blinked at Morningkit and pouted lightly. “S’ loud...”

Sagefoot purred quietly, feeling at ease as the familiar darkness engulfed them as they walked away from the entrance of the tunnel. “Don’t you remember your first time in the tunnel dear? I believe we were all afraid of the dark at some time.”
Larkpaw took a deep breath, feeling the side of the tunnel with her whiskers. “Would badgers even fit in this tunnel?” She asked curiously, “aren’t they huge?”

He wouldn’t have taken my doubts as easily as most. But I appreciated his courage.” Stonepath humored, thinking fondly of his mentor. He had never known his father, but Hickoryfrost was the closest thing to a father to him. “Were your first sessions frightening?” “Some are.” Juniperpaw shuddered. “Some are so big that they can dig tunnels three times as quickly as a senior tunneler can!” She whispered with a hint of nervousness.

Sagefoot flicked her ear, remembering fondly of her youth, things had been much simpler then. “Yes, my littermates were all training as moor runners, following in my mother’s footsteps.. and well you know my father isn’t around.” She mewed vaguely. “I was terrified to go into the tunnels the first time, but they called me anyway. I do not regret the decision to go against the rest of my family.”
Larkpaw shivered, “Mother and father would surely protect us right?” She gasped as the wall disappeared from beside her, the tunnel opening up into a small clearing. “What happened to the tunnel?”

He gave a look of understanding. “We both did not have fathers around to guide us. But we have made strong names for ourselves. I am grateful, that you chose the tunnels, and that you found it worth it to give this awkward tom a chance.” He admitted softly. “They’re brave, they would.” Juniperpaw swallowed, only for her ears to fall as she looked around. “I-I think we got to an underground clearing! Birchstep’s shown me one before, but this one is huge!”

Sagefoot felt her heart swell at her mate’s words, as they had entered the larger space she moved backwards towards his scent to press against him briefly. “You’ve always had my heart.” She mewed quietly before turning in the direction of the daughters. “You’re right Juniperpaw, this is a space with several entrances to different tunnels. A main space to get to many corners of our territory.”
Larkpaw gasped, moving forward slowly to find the comforting touch of her whiskers on the cool dirt wall. “All over the territory? Why doesn’t the whole clan travel through these tunnels?”

“You will always have mine.” Stonepath murmured gently in response, brushing his tail against her as she pressed to him, before he sat on his haunches to listen to his daughters.
“Some cats are very afraid of tunnels.” He explained, voice a bit more serious now. “They believe that every tunnel will collapse, or that we do not know what we are doing. They prefer the moors over any tunneling alternative.”

sorry i have not been on the forums for a hot minute i was busy this week, and i just got Disney+) Dawnpaw walked through camp dragging her paws through the frosted grass that was littered through camp. Moonpaw shook her self awake, she had not been able to sleep last night and she was very suprised when she wasnt as tired as she thought she would be. Lightpaw growled with frustration. he had just lost the mouse he had been stalking, as he padded around the moor scenting for any prey, he thought of the last time he had gone out hunting with a Clanmate. im going to hunt with one of my clanmates tomorrow! he told himself hastily, right now i have to focus on feeding the clan first!
(oh and Willow do you want Larkpaw to go hunting with Lightpaw tomorrow?) thx!

sure they can go hunting together after Larkpaw is done with her family outing Dawn. )
Larkpaw frowned deeply, "but the tunnels are stable right? They don't collapse?" she asked, moving back towards her family and accidentally bumping into Juniperpaw. "Oh.. sorry!" she squeaked quietly.
Sagefoot went quiet, unsure if they should tell their daughters the truth, of course the tunnels were safe enough, but there weren't completely safe.

“Some do.” Stonepath responded calmly, not one to be dishonest, even when it came to dangers. “Some tunnels have collapsed. Some clanmates have been lost. It is the risk that comes with providing stable hunting grounds, escape routes and protection from intense cold or heat. But death should not be feared, not when Starclan watches over us, and death could happen anywhere, at anytime, underground or aboveground.” He explained.
Juniperpaw gasped lightly as her sister bumped into her, her ears flicking a bit worriedly at her father’s words. How did he make it seem so easy, down here? He was always so calm and unafraid. “I-it’s okay.” She squeaked.

Sagefoot looked towards the one tunnel that stretched out from the cavern. “We won’t be letting you in the unstable tunnels, only the senior tunnelers and experienced warriors are allowed down there right now until they are repaired. The fire did quiet a bit of damage to our system. You will be taught the signs of an unstable tunnel later in your training.”
Larkpaw nodded slowly, their words making her feel conflicted. How many cats had been lost down here? “Can we keep moving? I want to see... I mean uh feel some of the other tunnels.”

She felt a bit comforted by her father’s light rumble of agreement. “Come on then. Let’s go show you some tunnels near Riverclan. Those are mostly undamaged.” Stonepath decided, nudging Larkpaw. “Has Siltpath shown you the different kinds of soils yet?”

Larkpaw shook her head, before mewing out a soft "No. Is there a best type of soil for tunneling?" she asked while carefully following the swish of her mother's fur.
Sagefoot led the way, navigating her way through the darkened tunnel easily. "Are your eyes adjusting at all Juniperpaw? I know it's very dark down here, but with some time, you will learn how to see without seeing down here."

He’ll probably take a bit to teach the smaller tips of Tunneling, but yes, soil type is important. The soil near Riverclan is wetter and thicker, good for structure but bad for flooding. The soil near Shadowclan is dry and hard, good for support and foundation but harder on your paws.” Stonepath explained to his daughter. “Uhm. A little bit, I think.” Juniperpaw mewed softly, trying to see anything in the dark. She kept close to her mother, determined to do well. “How can you see without seeing?” She asked.

Larkpaw swished her tail, the little she-cat couldn't control how happy she was to be in the tunnels with her parents at last! "That makes sense. So do we transport the dirt from the borders and use them throughout the tunnels?"
Sagefoot chuckled softly "I know it's a statement that doesn't make much sense. You will learn how to feel the slight breeze on your pelt from the open tunnels, you will memorize their curving paths and you will know how to feel the difference of the soils on your whiskers and pelt. It may take multiple seasons for you to develop these skills, but I am sure you will."

Instead, we merely work differently depending on the side of the territory we’re on.” Stonepath explained, giving a small quirk of a smile as he listened proudly to his daughters and mate. This was everything he had wanted as a kit, to enjoy the tunnels with a family that understood. “Oh, no, mother, that...actually makes alot of sense. To me, I mean.” Juniperpaw stammered, eyes widening slightly as her mother’s words made alot more sense. Already she could feel the slight breeze in her fur coming from behind them, where they had come in from.

Larkpaw hummed thoughtfully, she wrinkled her nose as the air around them became damp, the scent of fish becoming present. "I can smell Riverclan!" she moved closer to the wall to inspect the soil, wanting to feel the difference. Her eyes lit up as she could feel the wet thicker dirt. "Wow! The soil really is different here father!"
Sagefoot smiled, pride for her daughters swelling in her chest. "Good, I knew you and your sister would pick up tunneling quickly. You both are very smart."

Sandfall hummed quietly to himself as he hauled old materials from the elder's nests out of camp. The tom didn't mind helping out the apprentices with their tasks occasionally, especially when they had training and hunting they could be getting done.

Moonpaw looked around camp searching for dawnpaw. oh i got to go with sandfall when he finishes talking with whispersong. moonpaw thought to herself when she had finished her meal. moonpaw drawed a paw over her ears before padding away to the apprentices den.

You can feel the water in it.” He nodded, inviting his daughter to get a feel of it. “Only because you taught us so much.” Juniperpaw mewed a bit shyly, warmed by her mother’s praise.

Larkpaw gently placed a paw on the wall, wrinkling her nose as it squished against her paw. "Father this is so strange! It doesn't feel sturdy at all, how can it keep the tunnel from collapsing?"
Sagefoot chuckled, gently nudging Juniperpaw towards Larkpaw and Stonepath. "Well you two were so curious, I wasn't going to not answer your questions. Now go feel the Riverclan soil with your sister. It's an important lesson to learn."

Juniperpaw gasped lightly as she was nudged by her mother, but quickly settled back into place beside her sister. She pressed her paw curiously at the tunnel wall, widening her eyes as she felt the wet soil on her pads.
“It feels weaker, but the wetness actually molds it together. These tunnels will absorb alot of energy better, and are less likely to collapse or crack than other tunnels. Also, more prey tends to hide down here. If you feel around, and you feel worms, then expect alot of prey such as smaller rodents down here.” Stonepath explained.
