Aedan nodded "Alright, we can do this. We'll all charge then, on my count. One...two...three"
Aedan began charging forward, his speed powering him forward. He'd slow down to fall in with Damianos once they got close to the enemy but he wanted to intimidate them as much as possible with speed.
He raised his sword as he ran, letting out a determined shout as he did. It had been too long since he had been in battle. He hadn't fought in a battle since he was eighteen, and it made the man feel like he had something to prove.

Damianos followed, joining the celts in a bloodthirsty roar as they charged the enemy. He wouldn't fall here; this was where his kind belonged; in the throng of battle, fighting for their lives and of the lives of the people they loved. And there were so many here that he loved.
He slid into the fight like a hellhound with a sword, cutting through body after body whilst keeping an eye always on Aedan. He clashed with formiddable warriors on the field- got a scare when he saw Aquila almost be cut across the throat, but Nuellan slid in the way to defend him and they both came out unharmed. Atreus shouted orders from behind, gaze stern and determined.

Aedan too had seen Aquila's slow escape, and he had felt his breath catch in his throat for a second until he saw Nuellan running in to defend him.
Aedan, though, had his own problems. These men had similar builds to him and Nuellan in general, and so he was without the same advantages he had enjoyed in Rome. He spent most of his time ducking under swords and defending Damianos.
The man did have the advantage of being able to run long distances, but on a battlefield this didn't tend to be hugely applicable.

All of a sudden Damianos swept him into his arms to get him out of the way of a viciously placed attack, and struck down the man who'd tried to take his life. 'Stay close.' He angrily said. 'I can't defend you if you're not there.' He took a sword to the arm and flinched at the pain, cutting through another enemy.

"I'm not going anywhere" Aedan assured, pushing Damianos' head down to duck a blade that was coming his way "Relax. Try not to worry about me. I'm fighting with you, remember. We can only get anywhere as a team"
With that, though, he stayed close to the other man and they fought together, just as they had in the Arena. Old habits died hard.

It didn't take long for them to route the enemy and defeat them, Damianos breathing heavily, sweat streaming over his body. Dust floated around the battlefield; he felt no victory, only a sullen panic as he tried to take in how many casualties there were. ((I'm debating on killing off either Atreus or Nuellan))

And it'd probably literally by the last straw for Idelle. I'm not replying yet because of you wanted to kill off either of the guys now is a good moment so we need to probs discuss before rping any further)

I think Atreus?? Because then he won't have had his chance to redeem himself, and it makes it a whole lot worse; but if I kill of Nuellan, it's going to destroy Aquila...... xD))

(OMG if we kill off any of them it's going to be torturous! I don't know, I guess if you want to kill one choose whichever one you're the least attached to I guess. This is going to be incredibly depressing.
On the other hand, we can do something very happy like Aedan's sister isn't really dead - and maybe neither is Damianos' mother - because she turns up out of nowhere. Or Aedan finds out he's going to have another niece or nephew.)

And Damianos' mother is dead lol, but I like the idea of a new baby or Aedan's sister!!))

Damianos wildly looked around for his friends, panting heavily. He saw Aquila in the distance, kneeling and clutching his thigh which was bleeding; he then heard a loud shout of his name, the voice pained and panicked. He looked up at Nuellan, who had called him, and he felt the world come to a halt. The celt was kneeling beside Atreus; he lay still, blood pooling around him. 'No,' Damianos rasped. 'No!!' He sprinted towards them and slid down as well, quickly examining Atreus, whose breaths were rasping and shaky. Damianos gripped the sword in the mans gut, and swiftly pulled it out; Atreus cried out and grabbed the Greeks arm. 'S-stop, stop, enough.' He gasped. 'No more, Damianos; boys, let me go.' 'No.' Nuellan croaked. 'We have healers, we can help you.' Aquila watched with tears in his eyes. 'You can't help me, celt.' Atreus snapped, laying his head back down and drawing in a deep breath. 'It's alright. I'm old; I'd rather go out like this than weakly in my sleep.' Damianos teared up and shook his head. 'You're okay; don't- don't talk like that, Atreus-' 'You.' Atreus said, gripping his arm tightly. 'You look after Aedan; you look after that little boy, Esca.' 'I will.' Atreus shifted his gaze to Nuellan. 'Take care of Aquila... don't let him think this is his fault. He'll never forgive himself or forget this.' Nuellan nodded, jaw clenched as he put on a brave face. 'Aquila... stay strong. You two... you're good together. I know I always complained, but...' Atreus broke off to cough, seeing black spots in his vision; every breath was harder to take. 'You're a family-' he gasped. 'Take- take care of each other.' 'We will, Atreus.' Nuellan murmured, gripping his masters hand. 'We will.' After a few more strained breaths, the light faded from the old mans eyes.

Aedan had heard Damianos' name being called and had gotten to the scene only moments after Damianos. He sunk down next to Atreus like the others, listening intently and respectfully to what he had to say, but tearing up the whole time.
After he died, there was the obvious discussion about how best to bury Atreus. Aedan, having been silent up until that point, spoke.
"He shouldn't be buried here, we all know he wouldn't want that. Since he used to command a legion, I think we should find the site at which soldiers of his legion are usually buried. There is probably one here in Britannia. And we do this the Roman way. I can't see him wanting it any other way. But you all know him better, so if you think any different, I'd want to hear your suggestions."
He spoke slowly, deliberately, and somewhat hollowly. It was as if some great relocation had taken him over, like an epiphany.
(Dammit this is so sad! And sorry for my short post)

We need gold to place under his tongue, a shroud, and a pyre. We burn him.' Aquila nodded, his eyes dull and empty. He had known Atreus the longest; they'd become almost like brothers, as though the master-slave relationship had never been there. Nuellan slowly stood, the first to leave. 'I'll get to work on the shroud. I'll ask the women to help.' He quietly murmured, slowly leaving. Damianos wiped his eyes, struggling to hold back heaving sobs; Atreus had become almost like a father figure to the young Greek... he'd taken care of and mentored him. He wouldn't forget this with ease. 'I couldn't take care of him.' He croaked, holding his head in his hands. 'I failed again.'

Aedan stood with Damianos, letting the others do what they knew best, with the knowledge of Roman ways Aedan did not know.
"You couldn't take care of him because you were raking care of me, like he asked, remember?" Aedan said, moving to put his arm around the Greek's shoulder for comfort "And you didn't fail him. He didn't want to be helped. Come on, Damianos, you can't blame yourself for his death just because you were close to him. It's not your fault when people close to you die, and before you say I'm wrong, I know you blame yourself whenever a loved one dies"

Aquila watched him silently, a bit of strength appearing to return to him; he had to be strong for the younger ones. He had to be their standing stone- their pedestal, to show them how to move on. He slowly stood, flinching with pain as he limped away to follow Nuellan, holding his thigh.

"I wish i could see it, the only time ive even been in a small community is when our horse broke a leg and we and a whole legion were lost south of the gull by the Brition Ilse." She shivered at the horrible memory. "I wish i could see your home..." If I wasn't the princess of the roman Empire... and you weren't a slave bought and paid for.

And if I'm with you I could show you all of these things." Aedan highly doubted that the royals went to Britannia often, but he knew they did. If he could go he could show her these things that she wanted to see so badly.

Aedan had little experience with loss himself, considering that he had been somewhat desensitised to death over the last seven years of his life. But he understood it, and of course he felt it. He just struggled to show it.

He promised, shakily getting to his feet. 'I'm okay. We need to see to your dead.' He mumbled, looking around at the battlefield.

We'll let the families of the dead mourn in peace' He hesitated to do as Aedan said, before slowly sitting down again. He leaned against the man, closing his eyes slightly as he allowed the fatigue of the battle to wash over his limbs; he felt the strength of his father leave him. He jumped and looked up as howling came from nearby; and then froze as he saw two different-coloured eyes staring from the darkness of the woods. 'Medeia,' he breathed, feeling himself petrified once again under her powerful gaze. The wolf examined the battlefield, before slowly disappearing back into the woods, barking and howling echoing as the pack moved on. Damianos felt shook again, swallowing tightly. 'They say they will watch over the dead.' He mumbled. 'And stand a vigil tonight.'

Aedan was stunned as he too heard the howling and saw the eyes, then was even more surprised that Damianos seemed to understand all of this.
"You know that the howling means?" He asked "Wow. That's. ..incredible if you can. And who's Medeia? Just...what's going on?"
He had a lot of questions but was trying not to overwhelm the other with too many. Not that it really seemed like itl

'Not like a language, just... as if I just... know what they're saying.' He looked at him with a weary smile. 'Medeia appeared to be the leader of her family group. she was the one who spoke to me that night; told me I wasn't ready to... how did she put it? Ah- 'run with the pack'.' He rubbed the back of his neck. 'I still don't know what she meant.'
