On Damianos' twentieth lash, he released an angry snarl, sounding for all the world like a wolf ready to kill something. His brown eyes were flecked with red, the strength of his heritage keeping him going. On his thirtieth, he began to heavily sweat. On his fortieth, the trainer who'd brought him in moved to stand in front and watch, meeting Damianos' gaze with a smirk. 'Does it hurt, dog?' He murmured softly. Damianos stared at him, then tilted his head. 'Not as much as your face hurts my eyes.' He announced. The group gasped, and there was a few misplaced sniggers of amusement. 'Ten more lashes.' Damianos grunted as the whip hit him. 'Come to think of it, it's so ugly I don't think even the crows would eat you after death.' 'Ten more lashes.' The trainer snarled. 'Do you have no sense of preservation, dog?' 'I'm afraid I'm as wild as they come.' 'Ten more. The dog needs housebreaking.' 'Afraid I'll leak on you?' (Curse you forum rules against swearing) 'The only thing I want leaking from you is your blood.' Hissed the trainer. He recoiled with shock as Damianos spat in his face, and slowly wiped the saliva from his cheek, staring at him. 'Whip him until he passes out. When he does, wake him back up and whip him a further twenty times. If he passes out during that, start over.' The trainer turned and walked away, fuming.
Damianos laughed.

As soon as she spoke to him, it gave Aedan the ability to react, and so he did as he had been bid, until he was facing her, and his own face was now revealed. Aedan's face, like many of his culture, was raw boned, who strong cheekbones and a strong jaw, unlike the fine boned facial structure of the Romans. When he saw who had addressed him, he did a quick bow in greeting "My lady," He greeted politely. He heard the screams from within the Arena "I am afraid we will not have much time to speak" Sabina felt a jolt run through her as she looked into his pale eyes, he was handsome and exotic to her and the way his eyes seemed to hold the secrets of the world. She quickly shook her head and grabbed his arms firmly though under her finger she felt the muscles and callouss under the muscles, she truly wished to ask how many fights he was in but heard her impatient brother hurry her to get on with it and that no matter what she did the slave would die. "Unless you are an Oracle an can predict this mans lose then I suggest you shut you mouth Theoneus." She turned back to the pale celt with a soft smile, "You have my favor brave gladiator, when you win this fight in my honor you will..." she sighed trying to remember the line she heard her mother say a million times. When she could not remember she shook her head and waved away the ignorant formality. "Don't die on me." She said swiftly, giving him the clothe she turned and followed her family into the stadium. She looked back only once before he disappeared from sight.

Aedan had been silently trying to endure his own laser, by his own fortieth letting out only small sounds. It was taking too much of his effort not to tense his back for him to cry out and he was sweating.
Then he heard the exchange between Damianos and his trainer.
"Leave him alone" Aedan growled, just loud enough to draw a surprised inhale from the crowd and the attention of the second trainer.
"What is it? Have you learned nothing after five years? Are you stupid or just stubborn? Ten more lashes!"
The trainer didn't stop there, though, going on "Maybe you are just ungrateful, barbarian. Perhaps you forget that you are the only one here who actually owes his life to Rome. Or perhaps, should we have just left you to bleed out on the battlefield? It is Rome that saved your life,"
"And it was a Roman who wounded me," Aedan growled "so I owe you nothing."
"Oh, ten more! Remember, we can take away more than your blood and your freedom. The Greek knows it. But did you tell him that you know it too? Or did you not tell him? No, you didn't. Because you've always tried to repress it, haven't you?"
"Don't talk about her." Aedan snapped, flushing in anger.
"Oh, don't get so upset about a little barbarian wench" teased the trainer "She was nobody"
"She was my sister" said Aedan in a quiet, low, dangerous voice

She looked back only once before he disappeared from sight. Aedan had been a little surprised to be offered her favour, but took it with a grateful dip of his head. Then when she couldn't remember the rest of the line and simp,y said 'don't die on me' it was all he could do not to laugh, and instead just smile. Sabina had had a pretty face, Aedan had noticed, tan and soft boned. The polar opposite to his pale rawness.
Moments after he left Aedan was led back below the Arena to prepare for the fight. He waited in the dark tunnels beneath the Arena, with his armour on and sword in hand, waiting to be announced for his fight.

Damianos hissed, arching his back as one lash crossed another, tearing up. 'This whole thing- was my idea.' He yanked hard at his bonds at a particularly painful lash, gasping and leaning his forehead against the post. 'Don't let them wind you up.' He grunted at another. 'I persuaded you to follow me. I promised you something I couldn't deliver.' The whipper narrowed his eyes, and threw the next lash as hard as he could, determined to shut the Greek up. Damianos finally released a strangled cry of pain as his back was opened from shoulder to hip, knees buckling slightly. His cry was followed by a rage-filled string of violent Greek, hurling insult after insult at the romans and at his current predicament.

Aedan shook his head "Damianos, for once stop blaming yourself. I told you it was better to go the back way. It was my idea to go the way we did, and that was despite my knowing that we were almost guaranteed to be caught. At best, we're both to blame"
Aedan was caught off guard by a painful lash, gasping as his breath was taken away by the pain, his own back arching to match Damianos'
Then he heard Damianos crying out. He did a collective prayer to every god from every Pantheon he knew to help Damianos black out as soon as possible before he had to suffer too many lashes. He knew the whipper was doing the Greek a favour, hurting him so much. It meant that he was likely to faint sooner.

Damianos was still conscious a good fifteen minutes after Aedan's lashes were over. As Aedan was being tended to by a physician, Damianos was still fighting a losing battle. Chest heaving with rasping breaths, sweat covering his skin and trickling into his wounds, making them worse. Finally, after a particularly hard lash, he passed out.
Someone came forwards with a bucket of cold water, throwing it over his head to wake him back up. He gasped and coughed, spluttering slightly, then shuddered as he was lashed again.
After what felt like hours his punishment was finished. Another bucket of water was tossed over his back, to clean down the wounds, and he was untied. He couldn't support himself- collapsing to his knees- so was lifted by two men who slowly dragged him away, towards the infirmary.

(Okay! Let's do this!)
Aedan's brain was hardly functioning as he was healed, trying to shut off his mind to the pain. Finally, though, one of the trainers approached him
"I meant it when I said we could take away more than your blood and your freedom. So we're going to separate you from the Greek. If you have any sense you will forget about him and these silly notions of escape and freedom"
Aedan felt himself flushing red again, shaking with anger. But he had just got out from under the whip and he did not want to be under it again, and stayed silent. He swore to every god he knew, and his mind was filled with murderous thoughts. How could they do that?

Sabina was introduced as well as the royal family and sat on her decorated chair beside her mothers her brother beside her father. She sat back straight and at attention but truly didn't care for the formalities, nor for the fighting she found it dull compare to a true battle. She remembered her father taking her brother and her to Britannia when she was VII she saw people fighting in the grounds below. She saw the carnage from the balcony though that was apparently a quick and simple battle. The first fights we chariots and she didn't truly pay any attention.

Damianos was informed of the same thing a day later, when he was finally conscious. He felt pain in his chest like no other, as though he had just lost the single most important thing in his life. 'You can't,' he'd croaked- they'd laughed in his face.
It took him only a week to heal; he fought them as they tried to take him out as an example to the others. He was gagged and bound, shaking with rage and terror. 'This is what will happen if you do not conform.' The trainer announced, glancing at Aedan- whom had been forced to come see Damianos off with the others- with a smirk. 'You lose everything.'
Damianos began to fight again as they started to push him towards a cage on the back of a horse-drawn cart, screaming and heaving against the two men that dragged him. With much difficulty they threw him into the back of the cage; he threw his body weight against the bars, then slowly slid down them, chest heaving. They couldn't do this- they couldn't. He couldn't lose Aedan too. He tearfully found him in the crowd- the cart began to move, and he watched him until he was completely out of sight, and he could see him no more.
He was gone. Damianos was alone.

Among the crowd brought out to see Damianos off, Aedan was the only one in chains and gagged, and he was under close guard from his trainer, but he still struggled against the bonds when he saw Damianos, and his trainer laughed. "See how he struggles. They pine after each other like dogs after their masters.
Aedan heard the comment and went red with anger, only to hear "Methinks it's a good thing that the barbarian is gagged. Wouldn't want him making a scene"
Aedan felt cold now, as if some part of him was taken away with his friend.
That was the last time he saw Damianos for two years.

Aedan finally heard his fight being announced, and he went out before the crowd to wild cheers. Considering that his opponent was both larger than him and Roman, he suspected that the cheers wee not for him. The crowd was not on his side.
Aedan and his opponent stopped in the centre of the Arena, turned to the Imperial Box, and called to the Emperor "We we are about to die salute you!"
He waited for the Emperor's signal to begin the fight.

'Your opponent is a veteran to these fights.' Said Damianos' trainer as he was dressed in his armour. 'You need to be very cautious. He's not only experienced, but his athleticism is unchallenged.' 'I'll be fine.' Damianos muttered blankly, staring straight ahead of him as he psyched himself for his fight. 'You'd better be.' The trainer replied, putting on his helmet. 'You're worth a lot, Damianos. Don't you forget that.' 'Of money.' He responded, pushing the trainer out of the way and retrieving his sword. 'Don't you worry.. I'll have his head off his shoulders.' He cracked his neck as he headed to the arena, feeling no fear, nor apprehension. He would welcome death as easily as he now gave it.

"Your opponent has been fighting for two years, so he's got plenty enough experience. Early twenties, in his prime. He has unmatched strength but is lacking in speed. Be careful, he is a remorseless fighter, and will not hesitate in his attacks. You must focus on defense and speed. He is so strong that to allow him to get a strike on you could mean death" explained Aedan's trainer as he handed the now 25-year - old his sword.
"I've been fighting for seven years. I know every technique there is to know. If this man is to be beaten, I will beat him" replied Aedan as he fitted his helmet and headed out into the Arena, once again filled with the sound of the crowd cheering.

He stood before the emperor, glancing sideways at his opponent, taking into close consideration the way he was built. Immediately he knew he'd have to be careful in this fight; he could already tell the opponent was faster than he was.

Finally Sabina sat up more seeing the gladiator that she had given the favor to, she wished she had gotten his name so she could call out his name over the though the crowd calling for the roman gladiator. Carefully she followed her father to the edge of the balcony and watched carefully as her father started the fight. Though her father went back to her seat she stood and watched closely seeing the difference in the fighters she prayed to the gods to keep this warrior safe.

Aedan noticed the way the other gladiator bugged himself up to the crowd. Huh. That was Aedan's thing... That was a little irritating.
He turned to the Emperor, calling out the salute in unison with his opponent "We who are about to die salute you!"
He waited for the signal from the Emperor, and took the opportunity to look over his opponent. Looked tanned, so probably Roman or Greek. That meant he might have the advantage of a crowd who loved to see foreigners being bested by Romans. He was large and very well built. He looked immensely strong, and Aedan knew he would have to rely on his agility and speed.
