Liberty followed, muttering under her breath about he didn't even thank her. If she hadn't pushed him, the tree would have fallen on him. Woodrow hared along the route to town, partially because he enjoyed the exhilaration of running and halfway because he hadn't been exploring enough lately. There was so much to do! He skirted a confusing tangle of trees and emerged into the world of dust and gravel that was the town. He kicked up rocks in his wake and quickly changed direction so that—
He halted in his tracks. It was night. Though dogs could definitely see well in the dark, he didn't want to run into those two leaders. He would wait until Liberty caught up with him to make his next move.

Liberty came up and stood beside Woodrow. She lokoed at him with a raised eyebrow and continued on Woodrow looked at a small yellow building that read THE ANNE CASSIDY DAYCARE AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER. He shivered, not wanting to even entertain the prospect of what kind of dead lay inside. He padded on several feet and reached a Domino's. He could smell all manner of delicious things in the Dumpster behind it. The only challenge was getting to the food inside.
"Do you smell it?" he whispered.

"Yea," Liberty said, licking her lips. It was her favorite food ever! Woodrow slammed his forepaws against the Dumpster, then dropped back down. The flaps of boxes peered from the brim, glowering down at him, as if to say, How dare you set foot on our turf?
"How do we even get up there?" Woodrow pursed his lips. "I wish we had a grappling hook . . ."

'Leave it up to me," Liberty said. She crouched down and leaped. She snagged her paws on the edge of the dumpster and hauled herself inside

"How are you going to get out?" Woodrow cried, backing away in fear and, simultaneously, to give her space. And how had she jumped so high? Did this woman have superpowers? He plopped down on his haunches.
"Make sure to get me some breadsticks while you're in there!" he called in a whisper.

"Easy," Liberty said and pushed out a few boxes of pizza. She climbed up and jumped down. She landed hard and yelped in pain but wasn't majorly hurt. "That was higher than I expected," she said as she limped around, trying to walk off her pain

"Did you get the breadsticks?—" he began, but he pulled back, his ears flicking back, as she landed hard, yapping in pain, and began to limp. He was in distress. "Are you okay?" he said fearfully, padding up to her in slow, hesitant steps but too scared to get close. After pinning her against the tree like that, well . . . he hadn't let go of the prospect.

"I'm ok, my body is just a bit stunned," Liberty said, "There may be breadsticks in there, I didn't check. Pizza is my favorite food so I grabbed as much as I could."

"Inconsiderate," muttered Woodrow, though he scratched at the lid of a discarded pizza box all the same. He grunted a little and then tore at it with his teeth, yanking out a rotten-looking piece and tearing at it ravenously. He was more than willing to rid his poor, suffering maw of the taste of wood and termite.

"Got you!" he cried, pinning him down. Lad grabbed the shepherd's neck folds and jostled him playfully. "Hey," he said, stepping back, "let's go over there." He gave a cocky wink and gestured toward an abandoned bank. "It's very posh. Good for kissing," he added. Brimstone let out a yelp as Lad pounced on him, his normally drooped left ear flying up to stand up like the right ear. "Hey! You scared me there!" He licked Lad between the eyes affectionately. "Oh yeah? I didn't think a dog like you would go for anything posh." His words were playful, a joking sarcasm. Nosing his muzzle between Lad's legs towards his stomach, he flipped him up, moving to catch him on his back.
"We could be a circus act, huh? Hold on!" Trotting over to the bank, he was careful not to drop Lad.

Woodrow arrived on the steps of home base—though he really didn't want to go in. He backtracked, passing Liberty, and curled up at the side of the house, below the elevated porch. Better yet, he might as well go under it. It'd be more sheltered.
He sniffed at the ground for a moment, then scraped rapidly at the earth. Woodrow wriggled through the hole and then settled down in the dark. The only light was the pale late-dusk glow that filtered through little gaps in the woodwork.
What he's under looks kind of like this.

"Oh Lad dearest look at all this money. Let's go spend it on useless items." He grinned as he mocked the humans, picking up a bundle of the green money and tossing it into the air, rolling in it.

The whippet snorted. "Nice." He sniffed at the floor, then stood on two legs, one forelimb on either side of Brimstone's chest. "But I think I like this better." He gave a flirty grin, though his heart pounded in his chest, as if wanting to be free.

"Why don't you want to be around them? Liberty asked curiously It was awkward having a conversation through the woodwork, peppered with small gaps that gave Liberty a crisscross design. This could easily be avoided. Woodrow flattened these petty musings.
"They're intimidating," he said, "and, to add to that, they suck." He said the last word so flatly and so darkly that he himself was a little taken aback.
