Liberty squealed and ran away from him, laughing Woodrow sprang forth from the leaves, but she had fled by the time his paws made contact with the leafy ground. Panting, the terrier chased her from behind, steering her toward a tree where he could corner her.

Liberty was so focused on outrunning the dog that she didn't see a large tree looming up in front of her until she had no chances of skirting it. She slammed to a stop and bumped against the tree so hard it was sure to bruise the following day.

Woodrow halted sharply, his paws kicking up the caky, dusty earth beneath the fecund topsoil. "Are you okay?" he cried.

Brimstone gently grabbed hold of Lad's velvety ear in his teeth, gently tugging. A playful smirk hit his face when Lad broke free, and dashed away from the fountain. Tracing where he was heading, he sprinted towards the weeds, skidding to keep up, his claws skittering over the concrete. A joyful howl echoed from his chest, and as he tried to turn to head Lad off, his paws flew out from under him, like a dog on newly polished floor.
Crashing into Lad in a tangle of fur and limbs, tooth and ears, he rolled him over and over the hard concrete. Giving him another sloppy lick that ran from his neck to the tip of his muzzle, he let out a happy whine. Lad pawed at Brimstone's chest. "Big goof," he mumbled, his tail thrashing madly. "You caught me, I guess." He shot out from under Brimstone's loose hold and gave him a nefarious grin. "Now I'll catch you!" he teased. "Run," he added. "You guess!? I got you!" He stuck his tongue out playfully, his tail brushing over Lad's muzzle. "I may have spent my life underground, but I sure know how to chase!" Rolling away from Lad, before dropping into the trademark crouching 'play' pose that dogs so often did, he bolted away from Lad.

He was racing fast over the flat ground. He found it difficult to find traction on the smooth, relatively new pavement, but did the best he could. He was certainly better at running on rock or hill.
He was gaining on him!
Suddenly, Lad let out a yelp of ersatz pain, his legs giving out underneath him. He crashed to the ground—or pretended to—landing in a flailing pile of limbs.

Liberty stood up, shaking her head to clear the spinning. "I'm ok," she said, "I'm just a big klutz."

Liberty stood up, shaking her head to clear the spinning. "I'm ok," she said, "I'm just a big klutz." "Oh," he said, his muscles loosening. He blinked. "Just let me check." He pinned her against the tree on two legs, awkwardly flipping her over so that she faced him and then examining her shoulder.

Liberty's eyes widened and her breath came quick in nervousness as he kept her pinned. "I told you I'm fine..." she whispered "Oh . . ." Woodrow said hoarsely. Did she think he had just made a pass at her? He dropped down awkwardly, tail inching toward the place between his legs.

Liberty dropped onto all fours and nodded slowly.

Woodrow held himself in place, notwithstanding the urge to inch backward. His voice was terse as he spoke: "Why are you nodding at me?"

Liberty shrugged. "Lets get on with the hunt." "Oh." Woodrow said, though his appetite had certainly waned. He nodded, and then padded along in front.
The terrier mix skirted the roots of a scrawny pine and digged for earthworms. He snatched up some small ones in his mouth, then left his digging place to continue the search.
He rounded on a huge oak and sniffed at the hollow lodged under one of its roots, searching for animals. He shoved his head and neck in, caky wood crumbling around him and was greeted with a huge swarm of termites, enough to feed the both of them, as he looked up. Hell, he could even smell them. "Hey!" he cried, through a crunchy, squirming mouthful.

Liberty was busy stalking a mouse. She pounced and caught it, killing it cleanly.

"Come over here!" he demanded, enlargening the gap with a forceful shunting motion of the flanks. The wood crumbled around him, and he could fit his shoulders through, just barely. "Termite heaven!" But if she didn't come over there, it was alright with him. He greedily pounced on a swarming nest through the darkness, snatching up what seemed like a hundred bugs in one jerky lunge.

Liberty's nose wrinkled at the thought of eating the bugs but she walked over and took one anyway

Woodrow woofed delightedly into the nest. He leaned in further, rearing up, his claws raking the ceiling, to scrape deeper into the wood, as if digging. He unearthed the polestar of the nest. The king and queen termites dropped to the ground. Woodrow took them lazily in his mouth, dropping them unceremoniously to the ground and snapping them up in a little game. He could eat nonstop for days, he felt. Crunchy bodies snapped crisply between his teeth.
Fragments of splintered wood showered down over him. He yelped. The tree was rotten, and it was falling down piece by piece.

He crashed to the ground—or pretended to,—landing in a flailing pile of limbs. Brimstone turned quickly to look over his shoulder as if checking to make sure that Lad was following. He scrambled over the smooth pavement, pawpads skidding painfully against the angry, black surface.
The sounds of paws growing louder alerted the shepherd dog that Lad was drawing closer. Leaping over a pile of rubbish and rocks, his legs grew swifter, a white blur against the black pavement.
A sudden yelp caused Brimstone to skid to a halt. Assuming the worst, he turned to look over his shoulder. There was Lad, rolling across the ground from the godspeed run he had. Did he trip on the rocks? What was I thinking? I should have led him away... He may not be able to jump over that... Stupid Brimstone! Sprinting back to where Lad lay, he shoved him roughly with his muzzle as he checked to make sure he had no severe injuries, or broken limbs.
"Lad!?" His voice choked, panicked.

Liberty pushed him away from a very large falling limb. "Watch out!" Woodrow dodged it just in time, almost not yanking his paw from its path. The wood was crawling with red ants. He jumped away skittishly, his tail between his legs. "It didn't look like the entire tree was going to fall down . . . just the inside." He shook himself and bolted, his companion sure to follow.

Liberty followed, muttering under her breath about he didn't even thank her. If she hadn't pushed him, the tree would have fallen on him.
