Bumbleskip spotted muddy pawprints in the ground up ahead and lots of them. He cursed under his breath but kept on his path hurtling forward at full speed until he could hear huffing up ahead and faint yips. They must have been close.

Cedarstar hissed as he dodged away from the prey mauler. He kept running. Kept dodging and avoiding the monster's jaws, but after the long journey, he was starting to get tired.

Bumbleskip turned to run back toward Cedarstar once he was sure he could follow the path again. He was almost completely out of breath by the time he reached the leader and the first prey-mauler again. "Found the path but Cedarstar, there's a lot of them. I don't think we can fight them all." Bumbleskip ducked as the prey-mauler lashed out toward him, the tom swiping his claws at the beast's face again. He was so tired, his legs were shaking. He wasn't sure how much further he could go on.

When the prey Mauler went after Bumbleskip, Cedarstar took the chance to take his claws down it's flank. It yelped from the attack of the two cats. Off in the distance, a howl rung low through the trees. The prey Mauler turned tail and ran in the direction Moonpetal 's trail led.
Cedarstar watched the Mauler go with partial relief. He looked to Bumbleskip. "We have to find Moonpetal. I'm not leaving her."
Little did they know the trail led back to the mothermouth. Tufts of Moonpetal's fur dotted around the entrance. The wind tried to tug them away, but they were paved to the ground with blood.

Bumbleskip sighed but nodded, "Alright, but if it becomes too dangerous promise me we'll turn around. The clan needs you Cedarstar." He took this brief moment to catch his breath and ready himself to start running again. He wasn't the young warrior he used to be and with his lazing about in the shadows the last couple moons, he was severely out of shape.

Cedarstar flicked his ear twice at Bumbleskip's comment. "The Clan also needs Moonpetal. We're ShadowClan warriors, Bumbleskip. Those fox-dunged beasts won't see us coming." He nodded for Bumbleskip to lead the way, but signaled with his tail for them to take a stealthy approach.

Bumbleskip shook out his fur, cringing when he felt dried blood making it matt together, both his and the prey-maulers. "Well, may Starclan light our way then," he murmured. Following Cedarstar's orders he picked back up on the trail but followed a slower approach now as he slipped into the shadows. His brown pelt easily blended in with the brush around them.

Cedarstar slipped after the older warrior and he feared all the forest could hear his pounding heart. He kept picturing the look on Moonpetal's face when the prey mauler carried her off. Her screams echoed in his head. This was supposed to be an easy journey. One to find answers. Yet, all they were getting was attacked. StarClan said to look to the moon for guidance. How can I if I can't even make it to the Moonstone? Cedarstar pinned his ears back, knowing his questions would remain unanswered. I just want Moonpetal back and we can get out of here.
He hid in the shadows of the trees several foxlengths from the Mothermouth. Horror softened Cedarstar's face at the tufts of fur that drifted about the cave entrance. The air was soaked with the stench of blood. Inside, the yips of prey maulers sounded. They scuffled like foxes fighting over a meal.
Cedarstar couldn't stop the tremor that coursed through him.
Moonpetal was gone.

Bumbleskip trembled beside Cedarstar, shaking his head slowly. "I-its too late. Cedarstar we have to get the apprentices and get out of here. They'll come out looking for us at any moment now. I'm so sorry Moonpetal."

Cedarstar slowly bobbed his head. He had strain to focus on Bumbleskip's words. The apprentices, right. Cedarstar slowly backed away from the mothermouth. The thought of what happened to Moonpetal...He closed his eyes and shook. He failed her. He was her leader and he led her...The apprentices, he forced himself off the topic that wanted to invade his mind. He could be horrified and grieve later. Right now he had to get to Sunpaw and Palepaw. My son.
Cedarstar steeled his nerves by digging his claws into the ground. He flicked his tail for Bumbleskip to follow, not trusting his voice to not break. He swiftly headed back in the direction of the apprentices. StarClan...how was he going to break the news about Moonpetal to Sunpaw?
"Gaahh!"
A pained shout from up ahead pushed Cedarstar into overdrive. "That was Palepaw!"

Bumbleskip cursed under his breath and took off again after the leader back toward the tree he had left them in. The leader was quickly pulling ahead but Bumbleskip refused to be left behind, pushing himself as hard as he could to match Cedarstar's strides.

The prey mauler standing over Sunpaw and Palepaw pierced alarm through Cedarstar's nerves. Sunpaw bravely blocked the beast from Palepaw, but when Cedarstar saw his son, his heart about stopped. Palepaw laid unmoving against the trunk of a tree. Blood seeped from a deep and wide wound on his shoulder.
Fury hotter than the Great Fire ignited inside Cedarstar. He charged the prey mauler with a mighty battle cry. When the mauler turned toward him, Cedarstar ducked low, darted to the side, then sprang up to rake his claws across the side of the mauler's neck. He was aiming for the beast's throat, the move he used learned to only those that walked the dark.

Bumbleskip hurtled for the apprentices as Cedarstar went for the prey mauler, hackles raised as he growled toward the beast, standing in front of the young cats as he watched Cedarstar go for the beast's throat. He crouched low, ready to attack alongside the leader if his blow didn't finish the beast off.

The prey mauler shifted just enough that Cedarstar's claws only scratched the lower side of its neck, not going deep enough for a kill. It snapped at Cedarstar, but the leader retaliated by twisting and slashing the mauler's face. It yelped and Cedarstar rose up on his back paws to look as ferocious as he could. The prey mauler hesitated and when Cedarstar lunged again, it ran in the direction of the mothermouth.
Cedarstar stumbled as he watched the prey mauler run. His lungs were burning from the exertion and when he tried to swallow, his throat had gone dry. The prey mauler disappeared through the woods. When Cedarstar was sure it wouldn't come back, he turned to his son. "Palepaw," Cedarstar's ears pinned back when his son didn't react to him. "Bumbleskip...is he alright?"
Palepaw's breath was slowing and his eyes were closed. He was losing too much blood from the gash on his shoulder.

Bumbleskip turned to face the apprentice, ears flying back as he saw how much blood was pouring out of the wound on Palepaw's shoulders. "Cobwebs, I need cobwebs right now." He pressed his paws above the wound, trying to stifle the flow the best he could. "Hold on Palepaw." he encouraged lowly. "You'll be just fine."

Cedarstar darted his gaze around and panic coursed under his skin as he wasn't sure where to find cobwebs. "U-uh..." he ran to a bush and looked in the branches. When he didn't see any in there, he dashed to another. Cedarstar grit his teeth when he couldn't find a single cobweb in the bushes. StarClan, don't take my kit too, he desperately prayed to the sky. In his look up; however, he spotted a hollow in one of the trees, a spider was building a web in it. "I-I found some!" Cedarstar sprang toward the tree and waved his paw in the hole to round up the cobwebs--spider still attached. In his rush to get back to Bumbleskip and Palepaw, he mostly fell down the tree and ungracefully recovered. "H-here." He held his wrapped paw to Bumbleskip. "Is this enough? I can try to find more. There might be some..." he trailed off seeing the pained look in Palepaw's face. It broke his heart.

Bumbleskip didn't move his paws as he turned to the look at the leader, "I want you to place them on the wound when I move my paws. It'll give the best chance to stop the bleeding. I'll rearrange them then just press them firmly down. On three ready? One, two, three." Bumbleskip hopped to the side removing both paws from the wound so Cedarstar could place the cobwebs down, he watched the leader closely, trying not to think about how much blood was currently staining him.

"You want me to--wait what?" Cedarstar frantically pressed his paws to the wound when Bumbleskip moved away. Yet, he feared he pressed too hard when Palepaw winced. Tears welled in Cedarstar's eyes. StarClan, please. You can't take him!

"Good, look see? The bleeding is already slowing." Bumbleskip soothed, "Hold it there for a moment, I'm going to see if I can find anything to stop an infection from setting in and to help with his pain." The senior warrior wracked his brain for other options besides poppy seeds and marigolds wondering if he'd be able to find them out here. He hurried into the surrounding forest knowing that soon the scent of blood would lead the prey-maulers back to them. Bumbleskip spotted a small stream nearby and hurried for it, knowing there had to be herbs growing nearby. He grinned when he spotted the familiar horsetail plant. Carefully extracting the stems, a tangy scent caught his nose. Feverfew! Grabbing both the herbs he hurried back to the patrol, chewing up the horsetail on the way.
Once he reached the apprentice's side, he spat the poultice of the horsetail onto his paw and set the feverfew to the side. "Alright Cedarstar, you can move your paws now. I'm going to place the poultice over the cobwebs."

Cedarstar parted his lips to protest Bumbleskip leaving, but he swallowed it down, knowing it was for the best the senior warrior went. Cedarstar didn't move his paws from Palepaw and he couldn't take his eyes off his son's pained face. This is all my fault, he thought miserably.
Cedarstar almost didn't notice Bumbleskip return. He stepped away, but peered over the senior warrior's shoulder to watch what he did to Palepaw. It looked like something Snowdance would've done, but the poultice just looked like mushy grass to Cedarstar. "Please save him."

Bumbleskip spread the poultice over the wound, his application was nowhere near as precise as Snowdance's would have been but the blood had slowed significantly. He nosed at Palepaw, speaking softly to the apprentice, "Palepaw? Can you hear me?"

Palepaw groaned softly, but the blood loss left his head fuzzy. Bumbleskip sounded like he came from a dream.
Cedarstar raked his claws against the ground. "He can't walk like this." He glanced over his shoulder in the direction of the mothermouth. "An we can't stay here. Bumbleskip, is it safe to move him?"

Bumbleskip sighed as the apprentice moaned, that was something at least. "Let me give him this feverfew, it'll help with the pain. Then we'll be okay to move him. Can you carry him? That way I can keep an eye on the wound." Bumbleskip grabbed the feverfew in his mouth, chewing it up as well. He grinded it into a smooth paste before gently opening Palepaw's mouth. Placing the poultice inside he closed the apprentice's mouth and moved his paw down his throat to make him swallow. "Sorry Palepaw. I know that doesn't taste very good."

Palepaw's lips and tongue curled to try and get away from the bitter tasting herb, but at Bumbleskip's gentle prompting, he swallowed it down.
Cedarstar stepped up to his son and pressed his head against Palepaw's. He was tired from the journey, exhausted from the fight, but he was ready to carry Palepaw all the way back to ShadowClan. "Help me steady him on my back and I'll get him home."

Bumbleskip nodded, "Sunpaw help steady him on the other side." he instructed. Carefully lifting Palepaw's scruff and hauling him up onto Cedarstar's back. He winced when he noticed the wound starting a slow trickle of blood again and quickly patted the cobwebs back down.

Cedarstar spread his paws to better support Palepaw's weight. He swallowed tightly and stared at a speck of dirt to not focus on his son's blood on his paws and trickling down his side. Palepaw's head rested across Cedarstar's shoulder and his haggard breath in his ear wounded Cedarstar's heart. "We don't stop until we get home." He glanced at Bumbleskip and Sunpaw to make sure they were ready. "Sunpaw, keep vigilant for any prey maulers or anything else that could come after us."

Bumbleskip followed Cedarstar's pace, his eyes constantly flickering first ahead of them and then back to Palepaw and his wounds. His novice cobweb and poultice were doing as good of a job as they could have and the bleeding had seemed to stop again. He knew Snowdance would have better remedies though compared to his quick patch-up job. "We'll get him back to camp Cedarstar. Snowdance will know what to do."

Cedarstar nodded and grunted in response to Bumbleskip. He kept his focus on putting one paw in front of the other. Palepaw certainly wasn't a kit anymore and he was heavier than Cedarstar expected. He'll be okay, he told himself desperately. He's going to be okay. StarClan isn't going to take him. Every breath of Palepaw's in Cedarstar's ear kept the father going.
