Shafer would most definitely fill that need. Go sleep, kiddo. And ah. No matter how many times I read that last bit, it produces the same nonsensical mental image and I might need some clarification later... Night~))

(Back for a bit today. I'll unfortunately be away til Sunday night. To explain, I'm a humongous and I got to a zombie apocalypse larp every month. My character at said larp is also named Tobias Crow. If I had to summarize I would say this roleplay's version of Tobias is just me with more eyeliner and the larp version is me with less lol. In any case, the larp lasts from Friday night to Sunday afternoon with no breaks in immersion, so I won't have my computer or phone or anything until Sunday. Bad time, I know, but there's not anything I can do about that.)

That's just. Tragic. For me. Sounds like fun for you though lmao I've heard of larping but I've never been to one. Or even know really what it is. Like? There was that one episode? On Being Erica? But I feel like that example was a bit dramatic? Or it wasn't and I don't know what I'm talking about? That last one is always a possibility... Either way, have fun. Be safe. Is larping dangerous? I have so many questions, Stri.))

(I haven't seen whatever that is so I can't really say. I will say that not all larps are created equally though, so some may very well be like that while others aren't. Dystopia Rising is actually the only larp I've been to yet but hopefully I'll be going to a fantasy larp a few of my DR friends run a city over, and a couple of my OTHER DR friends keep trying to get me to go with them to a bigger fantasy larp up in Georgia, but we'll see.
Anyways, to explain, I'm sure you know that it stands for "live action roleplay," so it's like an rp on here- a world with a plot, lore, area, and characters, except you physically act out the characters. It's a bit more like improv acting as opposed to collective text-based storytelling. In general larps aren't dangerous, but really it depends what kind of combat system is used. DR is perfectly safe, as it uses a "lightest touch" system, which basically means that while you are physically hitting each other, your doing so lightly, and calling damage as opposed to actually trying to beat each other down. Meanwhile, there are "full-contact" larps; I'm not 100% sure how those work, but they're a lot more violent and I believe that as opposed to just trying to get the character's numerical health to zero, you're actually trying to physically defeat the player. Don't quote me on that though. Either way, I know for a fact full-contact are a lot rougher than lightest touch. MOST larps use lightest touch except for, like, particularly gritty medieval ones lol.
As for how to get into larping, that depends on what you want to do and where you live. Unfortunately larps aren't as common as I feel like they should be, and especially here in the south good ones are hard to come by T-T. Dystopia Rising- the one I go to- is national and I would highly recommend it if you're into apocalypse, zombies, dystopian future, modern fantasy, or anything like that. It's kind of intense- game lasts from 9:00 Friday night to 12:00 Sunday [idk if that's all games or just mine though] and except for a 4-hour "NPC shift" where you're non-player characters such as enemies, random merchants coming into town, etc, you're in-character the entire time. You eat and sleep in character, and you're in danger the whole time. Of course, kitchen, bathrooms, and places like that are non-combat, so you wouldn't be attacked there, but it can and will happen where you can be attacked by zombies, raiders, or other enemies while asleep in your cabin. Still, it's a blast if you can handle it. The community is fantastic; everyone is helpful and it's extremely LGBT+ friendly, and the lore is extremely immersive and in-depth. I would particularly recommend it if you like Fallout or The Walking Dead, or anything similar. There are games all around the country, though depending on where you live the closest game may be 5 or 6 hours away. Still, if you don't mind driving that long to spend a weekend there, it would be totally worth it. I'm lucky in that my game's only about an hour and a half away.
If you don't care, just skip this part lol. To summarize the lore, it takes place roughly 200-400 years after an event called "The Fall," which was essentially the collapse of civilization as we know it. The Fall occurs at some point in our future, though exactly when is difficult to pinpoint. To summarize the Fall: at some point, the dead began to rise, as in your stereotypical zombie apocalypse. However, no matter what, they wouldn't stay dead permanently. Didn't matter if they were beheaded, burned, dismembered- they always came back eventually. This is because the cause of the zombies- the infection- was a gigantic subterranean fungus now known as the Gravemind, which essentially absorbs the bodies of creatures when they die and then reassembles them to send them back out into the world as feeders. In the hope that completely disintegrating the zed would actually destroy them permanently, governments began nuking their own major, overrun cities, leaving much of the world radioactive and destroyed. Obviously this only partially worked, if at all, because society proceeded to collapse entirely. After that point, not much of history is known, just that people slowly began to rebuild pockets of society here and there and eventually evolved into the various strains, which are essentially the different "races" that you can play in-game. Some strains are more-or-less like humans: for example, Natural Ones, Rovers, or Mericans, where the only thing really setting them apart is their culture. Others, like the aquatic, fish-like Salt Wise or vampire-like Semper Mort are more mutated. There's a lot more to the lore- different in-game "religions," strain-related culture, regional lingo and social dynamics, and all that good stuff- but you can look into that/ask me about it if you're actually interested lol.
As for OTHER larps, though; you could look online to see if there are any that interest you nearby. Another good place to find their trails are at anime/comic/gaming conventions; that's where I learned about Dystopia Rising, at a free 2-day convention about an hour or two from where I live.
Also, I'll add Mandy.)

(alright will add Gene)
Tobias sighed and leaned back in his chair, glaring at his screen for a moment before glancing around him. Most people kept their distance, though as seats became more scarce people had ventured closer. Even in his current melancholy mood- both temporarily and in life in general- he couldn't help but scope out the younger guys in the crowd for dat booty. Not that anyone would take notice of him, or would he want them to, but it was an old habit he had found forcefully reawakened by his recent breakup. It was a distraction, if nothing else, when his mind began to wander too much into the territory of what might have been.
As he absentmindedly scanned the crowd, he found his eye drawn to the bright color of a piece of coral someone was turning in their hands. Tobias watched it for a moment, passively drawn to the movement and the color, before his gaze wandered to the boy's face. He looked European- possibly Russian- and while his face was perhaps a bit more masculine than Tobias usually liked he wasn't unattractive. That aside, Tobias noticed a long scar running down his cheek and wound up staring at it a bit more intently than was likely proper, wondering what could have caused it.
(idk what Kieran's sexuality is but Tobias is gay af so they get to start out with Toby checking him out lol) Standing up, Kieran stretched, realizing too late his notebook had still been on his lap. It hit the floor and papers poured out of it. Kieran swore profusely, dropping to the ground and gathering the large clump of papers, shoving them back into his backpack before grabbing the notebook itself, which was now significantly skinnier without a plethora of loose pages hidden inside. Sighing, Kieran slung his backpack over his shoulder as he stood back up, turning around and for a moment catching the gaze of another passenger. Try as he might, Kieran couldn't help but focus on the guy for a split second, tilting his head in curiousity. As quickly as he'd looked back, Kieran looked away, mind now swimming with questions. Why had that person been looking at him? Sure, he'd made a small mess, but surely it wasn't that interesting, right? Deciding then, Kieran made no effort to hide his intentions as he walked to the stranger. Best to be direct, and answer the call of his curiosity. Smiling, he stuck out a hand. "Hi, I'm Kieran."

(Yeah you should totally look into it, see if there's a game near you. If you decide to join tell me so I can give you my player number, put me down as the one who referred you so I can get that sw33t referral bonus xp lol. On a related note, any Floridians? You don't have to answer that, I'm just curious cuz if you're from Florida or nearby and decided to come you'd be at my game.
Also, willowflower: yep, I'm allowing joining up until the plot starts. So when the title says closed for joining, it's closed. Until then, new characters are welcome.)

(Ooh Indiana you say? One of the biggest games is actually there, Fields of Iron I wanted to go there a while back because they had a 4-day game on Memorial Day weekend but alas I was unable to make it.
Also @anakin: sorry, I didn't see your post til just now. I don't know if I'll get a chance to respond at this point, it's getting ever-closer to leavin' time. If I don't reply before about 5:00, don't feel bad about canceling out/ignoring Tobias's interaction attempt, I won't be back til Sunday.)

Whooaaa that sounds incredible and like something I really want to do but totally don't have time for. I'm up in Canada, on the west coast. So there's like. Literally nothing for me to do ever. I play piano, I compete, that's as exciting as I get. But ohh my god, I'm already so into that. Damn it. Anyway. I have a really busy day. For the rest of the day. And weekend. Well, I have a day off on Sunday. So I'll probably end up posting some sort of starter on Sunday. I could probably still chat a bit though? I'm not sure, I can never tell how hectic my weekend will be.))

(Hm well I know there's a game in like Oregon, Washington state, somewhere like that. But I'm gonna guess you're fairly far from the border anyways if you have nothing to do lol. As for Fields of Iron: yeah, it's still the same game. They're all the Dystopia Rising larp, but Fields of Iron (mine is Gatorland. Others are Hell Dorado, Bravo, Haven, Eden, and some others I don't remember) are "chapters," which are basically just different game sites in different states. They all still have the same lore, rules, and over-reaching backstory, but each chapter acts as a different settlement in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. I haven't actually been to Fields of Iron, but it would be very similar to Gatorland. Like I said, same rules and everything. The only difference, really, would be the in-game culture, which does vary from game to game. So, Fields of Iron is the name of the settlement of the Indiana game [or is it the geographical region? I can't remember], but it's still a chapter of the Dystopia Rising larp. I would recommend looking up the FoI website, and they'll have location and event information there, as well as a link to where you can download the guidebook PDF, which explains all the rules and base lore, such as backstory, strains, professions, faiths, etc. I should note that you have to be 16 or older to play [there is no filter in-game. Intense cursing and general inappropriateness abound, especially where there are Yorkers, Mericans, or Hedons] but I'm gonna guess that's not a problem for most of you.)

(Bouta leave here in a few minutes but I have time for one more comment. Anyways if you live on the border and it's not too much of a pain to come over then it might be worth it. I know there's a game somewhere up there but I'm not exactly sure where. If you find the Dystopia Rising forums, it has a list of all the different games so you can figure out where it is.)

gene taylor. As soon as he'd hit the chair, Gene felt a wave of exhaustion rush over him. It seeped into every joint and weighed heavy on his shoulders. Every motion felt as though it'd take him an age to end it, the effort all he could muster in that moment. Sinking into his seat, he stared toward the double doors and the flight attendant, dreading the moment he'd have to stand and confront the plane and its passengers. Resting his head in one hand, he started to wonder how long the wait would be, whether this storm would pass as a short tantrum or last for a few hours. He'd called his grandmother, warned her of the delay and spoke to Eli, his younger bother nearly bursting with excitement. His high-pitched voice had practically screamed through the phone, his enthusiasm rampant as he rambled on about seeing Gene and showing him his few newer drawings. Though the call had only served to worsen the ache in his head, he'd enjoyed it, missing everything about home and his family. It'd been at least a year since he'd last saw them and the feeling of being homesick had nearly crippled him in that moment.
Away from it now, the pain in his heart subsided, his focus on the overwhelming sense of complete and utter fatigue. He'd been awake for nearly three days now, not a hint of sound sleep between them. He wasn't sure if it was the nerves or something else but he'd down at least three packs of his Morley cigarettes, not nearly as guilty about it as he should be. Patting his left breast pocket, he pursed his lips tighter. He wanted nothing more than to step out and light one up, if only to watch it burn in his hand, but they'd taken his lighter at the checkpoint. Still sour, he scowled and shifted in his seat, crossing his arms over his chest and ducking his head tiredly.
mandy monroe. Holding each elbow in hand, Mandy paced the floor, claiming her small, two foot expanse with a quick turned and careful stamps. She wasn't much for waiting and preferred to be at least on the plane. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. Peering over the heads of passers-by, she stared at the double doors, waiting impatiently for them to open. Bitting the insides of her cheeks, she sighed and turned toward the window. Rain fell in thick sheets, spilling down the glass in small streams and drenching the tarmac outside. Pressing closer, she stared out at the planes sitting idle, illuminated only by the spotlights. There were few things that absolutely terrified her and flying was one of them. The thought of being hopelessly uninvolved in the action and maintenance of the contraption she was about to board made her uneasy. Anything could go wrong and she'd have no way of controlling it. Staring at their dark, looming, metal bodies, Mandy narrowed her eyes and shifted her weight to her heals.
If anything, she wished she'd packed a book in her tote. Something to keep her mind off the wait and her approaching flight. Those around her carried small gadgets, papers, and devices. Everyone busying themselves so that they could shut out the world around them. Sucking in a breath, she supposed now was as good a time as any to strike up a conversation.
