Roman rushed pretty quickly into the Great Hall, partially distracted by the time. He was pretty worried he'd missed the good part of breakfast sleeping in. What could he say? For all that learning was something great that he loved, sleep was, for sure, his first great love during a break. There were other contenders during school session, of course, but that wasn't here nor there right then. So Roman rushed to the Ravenclaw table, plopping down in the first open seat by mostly full dishes, which just so happened to be by Rose.
"Hey, Rose," Roman said, already grabbing some of the better bits of a Hogwarts breakfast for his plate before he missed them. "How was your breakfast?"

"That's a good idea. Trying to do it all at once wouldn't work out very well. Especially if you can't even manage to get the first part of it done...." Alex didn't even notice her blush, too focused on the words in front of him. "These are good. You should've been put in Ravenclaw instead of Hufflepuff." Especially because she wasn't particularly nice, but he didn't point that part out. It most likely would not make her want to be any nicer to him. "I think you're on the right track, but you've made a few small errors in here, I think." He started to explain the errors, however, stopped rather quickly, not wanting to irritate her.
--
For once, Rose thought she might actually be able to read in peace, without anyone trying to talk to her. It was a miracle! ...but no. Of course she wasn't that lucky. When she heard his voice, she knew it was Roman immediately, so didn't even bother to lift her bright eyes from the pages of her book to look at him. "Hello, Roman," she said coolly, a soft sigh escaping her lips. "Well, before you came along, no one had tried to talk to me, so I think it was fine." He was probably talking about the food, but she did not care. "Is there something you need, or is there no more open spots at the table, and you're just forced to sit by me?" She knew it was one of the two.

Samantha started out a little mad, then slowly calmed with the Ravenclaw comment. She loved her house, but that didn't help with feeling out of place sometimes, and it helped to know that she wasn't the only one that felt it. It was her own fault for asking, of course, though she couldn't imagine how different her life would be otherwise. Samantha realized she'd become lost in her thoughts just as Alex stopped his explanation. "No, go on, I think I see what you mean," she said eagerly, pretty excited at the chance of a break through. "I asked you to look over it, don't try to guard my feelings on the mistakes, I need to know them to fix them." Roman's mood soured pretty quickly as she dismissed him. He'd been trying to build a friendship with her, or at least get her to talk nicely to him, for over a year, just a nice word every few weeks or so that she always shot down. He knew how isolated she was, knew how little time she spent talking to others, because she said she preferred her studies to people, but he also knew how lonely that could be. He'd been that person before Hogwarts, a muggle born kid ostracized by peers who thought his few instances of accidental magic were terrifyingly weird. So he keep trying to reach out in case she was lonely. He was beginning to think she wasn't, and that he was wasting his time. "The best food's only left by you today, but I wanted to come say hi anyways," he responded, finished piling food on his plate for the moment, more content to just start eating. (Sorry I just disappeared last night, I fell asleep. If you get a chance to get on today, I'll be kinda poofy, I have a pretty long dance practice. )

Honestly, Alex wished he had been put in a different house. Did he love Hufflepuff? Yes. He didn't have any issue with any of the people in his house, and it was overall perfect for him. He knew he belonged in that house, that he had been put in there for a reason. However, everyone else at hogwarts thought Hufflepuff was a joke. They thought they were all stupid druggies, and he really hated that. He probably would've picked Gryffindor if he could, since everyone loved them. Besides, all the heros and important people in the wizarding community came from Gryffindor. Not stupid, unimportant Hufflepuff. "Ah, alright." Once he received permission, he continued, pointing to the text as he spoke. "That might not fix it completely," he said once he finished, a shy smile crossing his face. "Since I'm not really the smartest, but it should help your progress a little bit."
--
Rose had always been curisous as to why Roman bothered to be nice to her. Well, she was more confused by the fact that he seemed to want to be friends. People were nice to her, mostly out of fear (she could be scary when she was mad), but no one ever tried to be her friend. So, she wasn't really sure how to respond to it, and even if she didn't mean to, always ended up saying the wrong thing. Which was rather frustrating, honestly, because it's not like she wanted to drive people away. She just wasn't sure how to deal with them. "Well, hi." Noticing that his mood had soured after her harsh comment, Rose pursed her lips, deciding it wouldn't kill her to try and be nice. Right? "Are you happy about not having to go home?" She asked after a moment, attempting to start a conversation. "I kind of am. It's always way crowded at my house on Christmas - I have too many siblings and cousins. But it won't be much better here. No one will ever shut up in our common room. I think the Christmas Ball might be the only time where I can actually get some peace and quiet, since everyone will be gone."

"Any suggestion could be the difference between in working and it not. Just because it might not fix it completely, it's still something I might have missed in the end," Samantha said, offering a smile as she left some notes on the section she needed to change. They were some pretty small changes, even if there were many of them, and she could already see how they would change it for the better. "Thanks for the help. These should fix some of my problems. Do you need help with anything? Any pet projects of your own?"
"It's nice to not have to deal with the magic ban. I'd just be going home to muggles and my younger brother with his accidental magic. I think it would be cool to see a wizard's holiday. Maybe I'll get to see some of that this year." Roman was rather happy that Rose had started a conversation. He'd finally gotten somewhere. "Are you not going to the Christmas Ball? Not at all? I may not stay the entire time, but I'm at least going for the earlier part of the ball," Roman said, looking at her questioningly. He understood wanting some quiet time, and leaving early to get that, but to skip the ball entirely seemed silly to him.

"Yeah, that's true." Alex looked rather pleased with himself, as he liked being able to help people. Most of the time, he felt useless, so it was nice to actually be useful. "Nope, I don't really bother trying to do anything like that. I'm okay with potions, but I can't think of any i'd like to make. At least, not any that are realistic." There were a few he wouldn't mind having, but would it be possible to make them? Most likely not. Magic could do a lot, but it, like everything else, had its limits. Especially because there were also laws in place preventing anyone from using some of the potions, even if he did actually make them. So it would kind of be pointless. "But if I do end up needing help with something like that, I'll let you know." He most likely wouldn't, actually. He might consider it, but was far too shy to actually go up and ask her for help. He was a very awkward, shy person, so talking to someone who didn't approach him first? Most likely wasn't going to happen. Especially if it was a girl. That just made it a million times harder for him.
--
"Who actually listens to the magic ban though?" Rose certainly didn't. Then again, she, and her entire family, could get away with more stuff than most of the other wizards at the school. Her parents were famous, for heavens sake. Who was going to tell them what their children could and couldn't do? Well, McGonaGall might, but she didn't actually do anything when they broke the rules. Not rules like that, anyways. Now when it came to some of the Weasley-Potter children (especially James) breaking other rules...there were definitely consequences. "It's not very interesting, honestly. I'd much rather see a Muggle holiday. I've never gotten to, since my mother won't let me go stay with her parents for the holidays, no matter how much I ask." Being the spoiled brat she was, she pouted as she said this. "No. Why would I bother? No one is going to ask me, obviously, and it's not like I have friends I can go with. I'd just sit in a corner reading the entire time, and I'd much rather do that in the Ravenclaw common room, where it'll be quiet, than in a loud ball room."

"Please do. For all that I don't want to admit it, taking a break from this potion would probably help me." Samantha smiled at him, then started sorting out her notes. She figured putting them away and focusing more on breakfast was probably a good idea. She needed to get the changes written down multiple other places before she risked spilling breakfast all over them. For the hundredth time, she worried about the legality of her potion, but dismissed the thought. She'd cross that bridge when she came to it, and quiet possibly ignore the law against it anyways.
"Muggleborns listen to the ban. I'd be kicked from school if I didn't," Roman said with a shrug. He'd read the rules, and he knew the consequences. He wasn't risking this world for something silly like lumos instead of a flash light. "Maybe we should switch family for Christmas. I'll see the wizard side and you see the muggle one. If we ever go home, at least." He didn't expect that plan to go anywhere, and meant it more as a joke. If she couldn't even stay with grandparents, there was no way she'd get to stay with strangers. "You could go with me to the ball if you wanted. I planned on going stag, but if being alone is keeping you from going, I can change my plans. I wouldn't expect you to stay the entire time, of course."

"Well, I suppose you would get in more trouble if you got caught than I would. You are around muggles more, so there is a higher chance that one will accidentally see you doing magic if you decide to do it outside of school, which may be why it's more important for you to follow the rule. After all, I'm never around muggles." That's the only logical reasoning Rose could figure out, since it wasn't just her that got away with it. A lot of pure-blood students ignored that rule, and she was almost positive their headmaster did not have anything against Muggle-borns. So she was going to continue to assume it was because a Muggle was more likely to see a Muggle-born wizards than a pure-blood one. "I'm sure you wouldn't want to be around my family for long," she said with a soft laugh. "They can get really annoying, really quick. My grandmother knits sweaters for us every. Single. Christmas. They're hideous, but we all have to keep them, since it would upset her if we didn't." She loved her family, really, they would just...interesting sometimes. "I wouldn't want to bother you," she responded after a moment of hesitation, her ears turning red as she suddenly became very fascinated with her hands, which she chose to stare at rather than look at Roman. "I'm perfectly content to stay behind and read, so don't worry about it."

"I think I'd enjoy it, but of course, I didn't grow up with your family, so I wouldn't be as attuned to the things they do that could be annoying." Roman answered, pretty amused at her stories. His own family was a lot smaller than hers sounded. His maternal grandparents lived pretty far away from him, and his paternal ones had died in an accident when he was only a couple of years old. His parents were pretty normal. His younger sister was annoying sometimes, but mostly a mix between fascinated at magic and mad it skipped her. His younger brother was quiet, and was often found in crazy situations he's accidentally magicked himself into. "It wouldn't bother me. If you'd like to go I wouldn't want you to be kept from it just because you didn't want to be alone." Roman noticed the blush, and tried to phrase his words in a way that wouldn't embarrass her more. He looked away from her, hoping that him averting his gaze would give her a second to get back to being less embarrassed and uncomfortable. He hadn't meant for her to feel either of those things.
(That's fine, I've kinda run out of ideas too.)

"You would enjoy it for a while, but....after a while it's tiring. If Victoire, she's my oldest cousin, isn't fighting with someone, she's staring at herself in the mirror, or trying to give some female in the house, usually me, an unwanted makeover. James, another cousin, just likes to cause trouble. Teddy comes over most Christmas holidays, even though he isn't related to us, and he just encourages him. And the other relatives...all my cousins are either running around screaming, or trying to irritate me. I just want to read." Rose could get very descriptive when talking about her family, as she loved to complain about them. If anyone outside of her family said anything bad about them, though, she would be absolutely furious. No one outside of her family was allowed to talk badly about her family...which didn't make a lot of sense, but whatever. "I don't know." She wasn't necessarily embarrassed because of how he had asked, just the fact that he had offered. Even if he wasn't asking her out on a date or anything, it was still mildly embarrassing. "I'll have to think about it. Thank you, though." Perhaps she should be social for once, but she didn't see the point in balls at all. They were just a waste of money, in her opinion.

"Sounds like a full house," Roman commented, marveling at how crazy the holidays sounded at her house. Some of his muggle friends had discussed holidays that sounded just as insane, but he imagined it must have been much worse for a wizard household with at least a few people who were old enough to do magic without breaking the law, and some kids that could get away with it anyways. "Alright, well, tell me what you decide. I won't be asking anyone, like I said earlier. So you probably won't lose your chance," Roman said with a smile, looking back at her. He was happy she'd lost some of her embarrassment. He hadn't really thought about how the offer might be embarrassing.

"It is. I have around eight cousins I think, and two siblings, so eight children all together. That's not including Teddy, and my father and two of my uncles, who may as well be children themselves. Then you add in my mom and aunts and grandparents and it's just crazy. I'm glad I have family to spend Christmas with, though I think you would like it more than I do. You seem like the type of person my family would love." Kind of a weird thing to say, but Rose was known for speaking her mind, after all. That was kind of her signature thing, and the reason so many people disliked her, or at least part of the reason. She said what she thought without caring how others would feel about her words...and she didn't even think there was anything wrong with that. If people got offended, well, they needed to learn how to not be so upset over what people said. "Well, I'm just gonna warn you, I won't be any more pleasant. You most likely won't enjoy my company, and if you're offering out of pity, then don't bother. I don't want anyone's pity." That's what she assumed it was. Or a cruel, sick joke...though she was pretty sure he would've asked her as a date if he was playing a prank or something. "Also, I don't care if you ask someone else. If you find some chick you would like to take as a date, that's fine with me. Just let me know." She would care, but would be damn good at hiding it.

"I try to be likable," Roman offered, not sure how to follow up her long list of family members. "We mostly just have my parents, my younger sister, and my younger brother for Christmas. Every few years we travel to go visit the rest of the family, my mother's side, but because they live so far away we don't go often. We were supposed to go this year," Roman shrugged off his last comment. He was far less bothered by the fact that he couldn't go see them than he should have been. But being at Hogwarts for so long had begun to cause a rift between him and his family, and he didn't know that it would ever close. It wasn't life he could go back to the muggle world. Wizards at Hogwarts didn't learn enough to hold a steady job in the muggle world, and he'd stopped going to muggle school before he'd even finished primary school. "I've enjoyed talking to you now Rose. I don't see why I wouldn't enjoy that at the ball. Plus, I've met most girls in this school already. None of them have caught my eye so far. I don't know that I'd find someone I liked enough to disappoint a friend in the small amount of time before the ball." Roman hoped that she wouldn't be too thrown off by the use of friend. He realized that one conversation didn't really make people friends, but he also didn't want to use something as unpersonal as acquaintance. That felt rude to him.

"You are likable. I mean, I like you just fine, and I don't like anyone." Which was true. Rose hated just about every person in the school, but deemed Roman to be worthy of her time. Which, honestly, he should feel honored about. Not many people got Rose to like them...only one or two managed it every year. This year it happened to be Roman, even if it did take him quite a while for her to even be willing to talk to him. "My family all lives in London...so it's pretty easy for us. None of us like being away from our family, so really the only people who go anywhere are one of my uncles and his wife, because she's from France and wants to go visit her own family sometimes. Especially her sister." She was rambling a bit now, which she seemed to do a lot. She was just the kind of person who had a ton to say, and wasn't going to hold back from saying it. Which could be either cute or irritating - it depended on the person. "Oh." She was simply surprised by his use of the word friend. No one had called that before. "I can kind of understand that. Most girls here are dumb, and the ones who are halfway decent most likely already have boyfriends, so you're kinda out of luck, hm? Guess I'm your last option," she said with a soft laugh, though it was impossible to tell whether she was joking or not.

"There's got to be someone you like," Roman insisted, letting a laugh follow rather quickly afterwards. He rather enjoyed how open she was with him. He'd known she must have had something to say all those years, and he was really happy he'd gotten her to say it. He knew how much it sucked to not have anyone to talk to, the fact that sometimes there just wasn't anyone you could tell things. He'd felt it in his first few weeks as a first year, the crushing feeling of being all alone in a place you didn't know with people you'd never met before and had almost no connection to. I was not something he wanted other people to feel. "I can't agree that the girls here a dumb though. There may be some, but everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses." Roman shifted in his seat, reaching out for a few extra things to add to his now mostly empty plate. He was, after all, partially there for breakfast, and though he'd already eaten quite a bit, boys often ate way too much, and he wasn't exempt from that. "You aren't my last option. There are definitely girls I could have asked if I wanted to, I just didn't want to."

Samantha finished eating and stood up from the Hufflepuff table, her notes tucked protectively under her arm. She smiled, excited at the progress she'd made, then started on her way out of the dinning hall. She was paying no attention to her surroundings, completely oblivious to the students she passed on either side. She had always been bad about getting lost in thought. It had lead to several unfortunate situations when she was at home, mostly accidental encounters with her father she wasn't able to escape unscathed, but at Hogwarts the worst that could happen was bumping into someone and having to apologize. At least, that was the worst she could think of, so she allowed herself to be distracted by thoughts as she walked.

She'd just finished hiding to drink her portion. It... was a regular intake, as it seemed to help her violent tendencies as well as her disorder. Odd, but true. As she thought about whatever, she didn't notice anyone until she slammed into them. Brow bending, she looked at who she had run into. Tephra found herself looking at Samantha, another Hufflepuff. Stepping back a little, she spoke "Oh, I'm sorry! I wasn't even paying attention." Giving an apologetic smile, she hoped Samantha wouldn't be mad at her or annoyed. (Sorry for short post ;_;)
