"The day RiverClan gains a new leader will be a strange one." Icepath padded alongside the river, gazing into her reflection for a short moment. "While I hope we won't be alive to see it, it would be the dawn of a new era. Maybe we'll get to see it from StarClan?" she suggested, feeling both uncertain yet at peace with the idea. "I hope so." Koishade said, watching her mother leave. She turned to look towards the river, eyes dark in thought at her words. "Who knows. Maybe we'll be selected to give Riverclan's next leader a life or two. Not that I'll ever know how it works, but I can only assume leaders are given their lives by certain cats in Starclan." Brookheart mused, before he felt a bit heavy speaking about such a serious subject. Instead, he let the cold water of the stream rush over his paws with a small sigh of relief. "It's been so warm recently, the water's felt so nice." "I'd consider that a huge honor." Icepath lowered herself into the water and let herself relax against the gentle pace of the stream. "If our next leader would accept one from us. Diamondheart, I hope." she spoke. She held much respect for the deputy and wouldn't have any objections to seeing him become leader. "It does feel nice, doesn't it? I couldn't live anywhere else."

A continuation of the kind of peace and calamity that Earthstar provides for the clan.” Brookheart nodded, approving of the choice if or when Starclan called for Earthstar to join them. Diamondheart had experience that surely would make a freshened new deputy envious, but the sense to uphold Earthstar’s steady foundations for Riverclan. Brookheart watched his sister, a rare moment of playfulness coming over him as he cheekily splashed some water at her.

Littlepaw nervously glanced at Mintpaw. Sure she was a bit older than him and was by far more experienced than him, but he still didn’t want to accidentally hurt her. Though, at this point in his training, what damage could the former kittypet really do? The most “violent” he had ever gotten was a few friendly tussles with other kittens back then. The most he could do at this point was to give the other apprentice a few bats on the shoulder. He kept his claws sheathed as instructed, but even then, he was sure Mintpaw could hardly feel anything he was giving him, no matter how much force he was trying to put into it. “You look as tense as a rock!” Mintpaw exclaimed, her stature loose and ready. She invited. “Loosen up a bit, this’ll be fun, yeah?” She promised, getting into a small battle stance that she had learned from her mentor. “What do you think we should work on?” Swanflight asked Birchtail, humored by the apprentices’ differences in personality. Birchtail regarded the two apprentices carefully. Mintpaw had been an apprentice longer and would be a good reference for how to do some basic attack moves. But, her attacks could also be overwhelming for her nervous apprentice. Still, Littlepaw seemed apprehensive to harm a clanmate. With that in mind, she decided. "I'd like Littlepaw to work on basic defensive manuevers. Though he isn't ready for river training, I think it would benefit him most to be able to learn from Mintpaw's attacks while learning to protect himself." She took a few moments to think. "Many of our tactics rely on the river, whether it's splashing in a cat's eyes or creating a sense of panic in those who aren't used to the river. But what should you do what you're forced to fight on land? How can you protect yourself or your clanmates when you're in unfavorable territory? Littlepaw, what do you think is important to keep in mind when an enemy cat is approaching?"

He stood back up, looking at her with a small chuckle. “But when was the last time us old Senior Warriors had a moment of mischief, hm? You used to get cross at my splashes, even when we were kits.” He teased.

"Ah!" Icepath nearly whined, wanting to splash him even worse now that he was teasing her. "Well, some things never change!" She moved to splash him again with her paws. I guess it's one of our pleasant memories of when we were younger, she thought, an unpleasant feeling stirring within her. No apprentice in the Clans deserved to go through what they did, and yet here they were, splashing water at each other as senior warriors.

Brookheart boomed with laughter, water bouncing off his thick pelt as he tried to shield himself from her strong splashes. Of all things, he was grateful that she was here with him. He lowered himself down into the water, letting it roll over his back as he rested on his belly, chin comfortably above the water for air. He rumbled. "One day we'll be too old for this. Do you think we'll make it to the elder's den?"

Icepath huffed and backed off while shaking water droplets off her whiskers. "I'd like to make it there out of spite. But in all honesty, it would be nice to serve RiverClan all the way to retirement. Then we can relax."

"I don't think so." Icepath tilted her head up to look at the sky. It was clear and blue, not a cloud in sight, just like the stream they were in. "All we desire above anything else is peace. The occasional squabble over Sunningrocks and exchange of barbs over borders is nothing compared to the war the Dark Forest waged on us." she murmured softly, her voice unfitting for the words she spoke. "Nobody deserves to see fields stained with the blood of friends and enemies alike. That's not what the Clans or the Warrior Code promise. So... I think we deserve to have peace." Did she sound like an elder just now?

(*Has not been here in forever* Hey guys!) (Howdy howdy! Nothing much has passed since Riverclan found the fur, so we can probably assume a few days timeskip and reset. I've got everyone open, except Mintpaw and Brookheart!) Diamondheart padded back into camp, flicking his tail to signal to his border patrol to go ahead and disperse into camp. Content with the peace on the territory, he looked around at the newly reinforced camp with a nod of approval. This was a camp! He flicked his eyes over to the nursery, content to see the kits playing with Minnowtail and Orchidnight watching them. He then glanced towards Earthstar's den, still mulling over their shared concern that the Dark Forest could be up to its tricks again. Smogstorm limped towards one of the streams in camp, settling her leg into the cool water. While she couldn't move her bad leg, she could certainly feel the way her scars pulled, even in the Greenleaf warmth. The water soothed it greatly. Being out of the nursery made her feel a bit somber, her deep internal fear of not being useful in her state creeping up again.

After all, ThunderClan seemed to be hit hard by the fire, enough that they had left Sunningrocks to RiverClan for moons. “I can’t see them playing favorites.”

"With how badly other clans were affected, I suppose I find it hard not to." Brookheart admitted, though he didn't seem fully convinced himself. Starclan worked in strange ways, and he doubted they wanted any clan to truly suffer. "Unless... something darker is to blame for all of this." He quietly admitted.

"Could... could any force be strong enough to cause so much damage?" Icepath worried. She supposed Brookheart could be on to something; open flames were uncommon, but anything that came into contact with them would also turn to fire. Would a determined cat do such a thing on purpose? "If some cat really did cause this fire, or anything else that's happened in the forest, I would say they succeeded in hurting us."

"If some cat really did cause this fire, or anything else that's happened in the forest, I would say they succeeded in hurting us." "Some days I scoff at the ways darkness tries to creep in. But other days, I am startled at its sheer strength. I imagine this fire was indeed an accident, but... I fear the aftermath can lead to a worse kind of darkness. Hopelessness, and hunger. Anger." Brookheart murmured, thinking of how deeply Orchidnight had soured on Ottermask after Rosefrost and the rest of his patrol had perished in the fire. They had been heroes though, and he couldn't blame Ottermask for that, but grief made cats do and think abysmal things.

At Brookheart's words, Icepath felt a cold chill in the air. She fluffed up her fur at the brisk change in temperature. "Some of the most dangerous cats I've known are the most driven," she mewed, knowing all too well how eager Lotusbloom and Brinetail were at siding with the Dark Forest. "They choose the wrong path and stick with it to the very end. And then, from what I've heard, it drives them even in death." She glanced at her brother, suddenly feeling weary. "It's probably time to head back. We've been gone a while."

"Yes... we have." Brookheart nodded slowly, before he felt a small trickle of guilt. He probably made the conversation far too depressing. They didn't need that kind of negativity. Instead, he slipped out of the water and padded back to his sister's side. "Maybe we just need a nap or two, yeah?"

Diamondheart turned his full attention to the older she-cat, dipping his head respectfully to her. “You’re as keen-eyed as ever… honestly, I’m mostly thinking about what else there could be to do in camp. We’ve got it down so efficiently that there’s more clean than there is messy!” He chuckled, before admitting. “That, and what the mystery of the strange fur is, of course.” Smogstorm snapped out of her funk, feeling a flicker of warmth and humor fill her as she looked at her son. Starclan, he and Mintpaw got bigger each day, but she only loved them more and more. She purred softly. “It’s okay, Maskpaw. I used to do exactly the same thing. I caught alot of minnows in my apprentice days.”

Frostlake flicked her tail and mused. "Well, I suppose the camp could use more shells or feathers to spruce it up." She shook her head and sighed. "I hope Earthstar's patrol to see Shimmer proves useful." She took a deep breath at the thought of her half-sister. "I should go see her sometime." She had some regrets when it came to Shimmer. She and Ottermask had grown close, but Frostlake hadn't given Shimmer much of her time before she-cat fled. "I hope she's happy."
Maskpaw waded over to her. "Eelshock says chasing minnows helps you get faster in the water, but I think he chases them so much because he enjoys it." He chuckled, but then glanced toward the camp entrance. "Do you think father's patrol will be back soon? He's never mentioned this she-cat they've gone to visit."

He knew it probably wasn’t the answer Birchtail was looking for, but it was still an answer. “That’s a smart answer.” Birchtail nodded at Swanflight. “Being able to rely on your teammates is part of what makes a great warrior. Even if you become the greatest fighter in the clan someday, there is no clan without your clanmates. Being ready to protect each other is what gives us strength.” Though it hadn’t been what she’d been thinking of, it was an answer that revealed both her apprentice’s mindset when it came to battle and his protective nature toward the clan. “For the purpose of today, let’s say you got separated from your clanmates. There’s a couple warriors between you and the clan. One of our advantages of living by the river is we get used to sleek and quick movement, which helps us with our evasive maneuvers in battle. Even when we get caught, our fur is either slick with water or silky from all the fish we eat, which makes it easier to get away. Even if another clan has more power, it means nothing if we can remove ourselves from the fight.” She took in a breath, steadying herself. Birchtail hoped she’d explained it all in a way her apprentice could understand. “Swanflight, could you help me with a demonstration? Littlepaw, you’re going to watch me and try to escape from Mintpaw. Let’s say,” she gestured to a bundle of reeds, “I have to reach those reeds to win. I’m going to try to avoid Swanflight and get there at all costs.”

He looked kindly at Frostlake. “If anyone can find a way to help, it’s Shimmer. She shares your ability to find any way she can to help. To know that you and her share something, I think it’s a good way to connect you, even when apart.” He understood her, especially with how he felt about Hornetstrike at times. He missed meeting up and playing with him at Sunningrocks when they were apprentices, when they had first realized that they shared the same origin story, the same river in the same awful blizzard. Even clans apart, he’d never stop loving his brother. Smogstorm nodded gently, humored by Maskpaw’s comment about Eelshock, but moreso wanting to assure him that Ottermask would be back soon. “Your father has a littermate, who gave up her name and life in Riverclan to live in Twolegplace. She, like your father, had gone through a very painful experience, in the days of Adderclan.” She didn’t want to go into detail that Maskpaw himself had Adderstar’s blood in him, but she continued, honest and true. “She deserved to have a choice after it was taken away from her previously for so long. She chose to be safe, even if Riverclan was restored to Earthstar’s leadership. That is who your father is visiting. And she’s a friend to Riverclan, and often helps by giving us good advice if we ever need an ear from a Twolegplace.”

Frostlake smiled softly. "That's kind of you to say, Diamondheart. I often wonder about her. I'll have to ask Earthstar and Ottermask when they get back if she's well. I know I never really treated her like a sister and I hope she doesn't think I don't see her as one."
Maskpaw blinked in surprise. "How come father never talks about her? If Mintpaw went away, I'd talk about her all the time." Though he tilted his ears back. He didn't like the thought of his sister going anywhere. Maybe that's why it was hard for his father to talk about it? Because his sister left him.

Maybe that's why it was hard for his father to talk about it? Because his sister left him. “I’m sure she knows. Back then… the things we faced, the fear she felt, it was hard for her and Ottermask, to know someone that close to them could turn into such a violent force. I can’t imagine how much it affected you.” Diamondheart admitted, knowing he could never truly feel what Shimmer, Ottermask, and Frostlake felt, to watch his own blood nearly destroy the clans. He nodded once. “But it was never your fault, even if Shimmer probably just… didn’t want to be reminded of it anymore. You were a light, Frostlake, in a very dark time. I’m confident Shimmer still saw that light, even if only for a moment. I know I did, even if I only shared their nest.” “…Relationships can be complicated.” Smogstorm murmured thoughtfully, before she offered a saddened look. “With how abruptly she left, I can only imagine your father was struck by it, and still could be. It’s not that she left, love. It’s that she left without asking if he would have joined her, at least given that option. At least, that’s what I’ve always thought. Some things, I don’t need to ask him about. These are the things that I am here for if he wants to tell me, not because I expect him to tell me.” She admitted, not one to pry, even with her own mate. Shimmer was a sensitive topic for him, and Smogstorm never wanted to force him to relive the memories with and without her.
