I know that swearing is against the rules, but what about starring them out in the case of roleplaying characters that canonically swear a lot? (homestuck lol) Or using entirely asterisks, with the swear word implied? Since it is a homestuck thread, is it possible we could even use swears in moderation, or with starring out some letters, if we put a warning in the title, or something to that effect? It would stay within the rules as being PG-13, I think, since PG-13 movies sometimes have colorful language. I'm just trying to make sure what is and isn't allowed. :0

From what I've seen, even if you star it out, if the curse word can be determined with ease, then it's not allowed. Mods occasionally will just censor the word entirely if they see this.
I, personally, would just avoid it entirely, just to be safe. Or use milder substitutes.

My answer? No.
Starring it out, putting dashes, etc. Is pretty much useless in my opinion because if you've heard of the word, you know how it's spelled. Plus the rules state ONLY hell and damn are allowed. You're technically breaking a rule here by doing this.
People who know the home stuck fandom should understand the words that are being used in rp, so I don't think you'd need them. + editing posts for swear words is needed here especially with the fights we've had. There's not one PG-13 movie I've seen in my life that uses the f word.
We either censor the word or put a mod edit, something like an oops, if we find bad language in a post. Basically, don't bother with it. Follow the rule for curse words and don't skirt around it.

Thank you for answering! There's a few harmless alternative words to swearing that I was thinking about, so that will work out ok for the rp! One other thing though... you know how sometimes in comic books and things they sometimes write swearing as random keysmash of symbols like %, $, !, &s. Here's a tv trope article about it if I'm not making sense >.< Just out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on that? Since that is a pretty common thing people use

admin (sand)Based on the context, you can draw conclusions on what is being used, so there is no point in doing that either. Avoid it all together is my reccommendation. If you think it needs to be starred out, then it doesn't belong on these forums.

Like 🆉🅴🅻🅳🆁🅸🆂 said, if you think it needs to be starred out or use $&@/! types of signs, then don't include the words altogether. Leave them out as they are not forum appropriate.

Sand answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061223193823AAx8eG9the comments about fbombs and sh are correct. you can say both a certain number of times before the movie becomes rated r. fbombs may only be said once or twice, but never in a sexual manner. for a pg13 forum, the censors are actually too strict. our rules now are for a pg forum. but whatever. if the mods say it's against the law, so be it

If you really have a bone to pick over rules, then PM staff and express your concerns. We're not WCF at all. Not even the word lotion passed on there. We've given you things you couldn't have over there. At least, be a bit grateful. I understand that the rules on swearing here are a lot more lenient than they were on the original WCF, and I really appreciate that. It's a lot less oppressive on which words people are allowed to use, and, as I remember it, the censorship there was completely ineffective. Like, there were some very loosely, vaguely sexual words that were censored automatically, even when used in an appropriate context, and I actually saw some people who learned that those words existed in that way. So this is definitely a lot better. I just think there's a certain importance to making sure we keep the rules consistent here, so we don't become like the WCF in that regard, full of ghost rules and stuff. For consistency, if we are going by a PG rating, or PG 13, then we should technically be allowed to swear, as long as the context is not intended to be sexual. However, since you've made it clear we won't have any swearing, then the rules for language should be given a G rating, or General audience. But often in TV shows, movies, or even on the news, swears will be "bleeped" out, i.e. the sound byte replaced with a beep noise, and the mouth either blurred or blacked out for a few frames. In this case, the word itself is not said, and without context, the specific word could not be determined. It is possible to tell that the speaker is swearing, but this amount of censorship is still conventionally considered appropriate for a general audience. A "bleep", in that it removes all actual pronunciation of the swear word, is equivalent to the textual "****" or "*%#&*%!". In fact, on the old WCF, swears were all automatically replaced by "****", so, by not allowing us to use those in the place of swears, is actually a harsher rule than on the WCF? Technically. I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I really just think it's important that we keep everything clear to make sure the rules are as fair and logical as they can be, so we don't have any misunderstandings.

[ wcrpforums.com/thread/1695/wcrf-official-forum-rules ] We do allow SOME swear words; it states in the rules which ones we do allow and what ones we don't. I'll explain anyways; hell, damn and crap are the only ones allowed. Nothing like the f word, the t word are allowed and nor the cu word. " 6. Please no extreme cursing. This includes f-bombs, racial slurs, and anything to be considered objectively offensive. How do you judge if something is extreme? Here's some clarification. Anything on this list (with the exception of 13 and 15) is prohibited: List of prohibited words." 13 & 15 on this list are hell and damn. So, yes, we allow some swear words like I said. @roswell stated that starring out isn't allowed, which is a question Ros can answer for you based on the starring out, blocking out. I don't have access to the part of the forums that replaces a word with ***, so I can't do anything on my end but edit the posts with my own way of "starring" it out. It's fine, I get it ^^; Clarification is a nice thing to have. I'd consider this place to be PG-13 seeing as when I grew up, I didn't know many kids who said hell and damn when they were 9-- I was probably a sheltered kid. Seeing as violence, gore, and certain artwork is PG-13, I'd say the entire forum is too. There's been complaints that are obvious on the forums about the swearing rule, it's something as staff, we've talked over. Since Tomo's been tagged here, we'll see what he says. I'll also tag the other mods for their opinions. Auransky @redx Невыносимая коммунизм Reverend 3 kits Felix

I know that in PM, when certain words are said, they are replaced.

In theory though, if someone decided to take the word damn, or the word hell, and replace it with four asterisks, would that be punishable as swearing?
And about the censorship feature, I mean, what are the swear words automatically replaced with? Does it star them out or switch them out with another word?

If you think it breaks immersion in RPs, then In sorry for breaking your immersion... I swear around my mother all the time.... I just want to be clear on the principle of this. If "bleeped" swearing is appropriate on news stations and other G rated programming, as well as on the original WCF, why is it not appropriate here? It's important to justify the rules here well so that we don't become like the WCF where mods would make up and enforce rules "just because".

Would you want to talk to someone who just used as many curse words as possible in a sentence? I wouldn't.

Personally I think rules against swear words are rather silly myself. I honestly don't see the logic behind censorship of such things. Is it to protect people from hearing them? Why is that necessary? They're just words. Is the problem name calling? Well, that's already covered in the rules. On the old forums at least I can understand the justification as "some parents might get upset and we need them to buy the books so let's keep them happy" but we don't need to think about that here so I don't really see any reason for it. That is my thoughts on the subject of swearing in any case.
