Maria's reaction made Seth smile. "Well, actually, that's why I brought it up. I need to know what you want me to do about it. As a Rider, Anya is, for all intents and purposes, of a higher rank than the elders. She does not need to obey their rulings. Riders have our own laws and authorities to heed. So I could throw my weight around and make them take the order back, but it could be difficult because a lot of people, especially those in leader positions, are unaware of the fact that they really have no power over us. We come and go as we please. Which is arrogant and conceited, I know, but it's also just the truth. If I don't want to leave, what can they really do to make me? Anya is another matter. She's still new to being a Rider, and she's a people pleaser. I'm not sure she'll want me, or any of us, to fight the elders on this. Not now, anyway." No doubt her guilt over killing Hyde would make her think she deserved being banished from her home.

"I don't disagree with you, Maria, but..." Seth sighed. "I think Anya and I should leave. Not because the elders told us to, but because Genevieve knows we're here now. It's only a matter of time before she sends more Riders. And I do mean more. She likely thought two would be enough to take me down —" No need to mention that it nearly was. "— and now that I've prove it's not, she'll send three or four next time. I'm good, but even I can't take on four Riders. Stel certainly can't take on four dragons."
He rubbed his forehead. "Problem is, if we leave, there will be no one to even try and protect the town. And there's no doubt reinforcements will hit it again. It's a surefire way to draw me out. But if I'm not here to be drawn out... there's no telling how long they'll keep attacking. Most likely, they won't stop until Ashborne is nothing but ash." He dropped his hand and drummed the table. "The only solution I can think of is to tell Genevieve we're leaving, but then she might still attack anyway, because telling her suggests I care about the town and Genevieve." He snorted bitterly. "Genevieve loves destroying things I care about."
He stopped talking, realizing that at this point he was more thinking out loud than anything.

Seth took her hand and led her back outside. Stel was still in the yard, fast asleep, her scales gleaming in the faint moonlight. Seth walked over to her. He let go of Anya's hand so he could climb up to the saddle, where he'd left a small bag. He pulled it down and dropped it carefully to the ground, then quickly removed the saddle itself. Stel never stirred.
Finish, Seth dropped to the ground and sighed. "Stubborn dragon," he muttered, with concern and affection. As soon as she learned what he was up to, she had taken off after him. Seth had told her several times not to. She was hurt, much more so than he was, but did she listen? No. His she-devil never listened.
Seth shook his head and bent to pick up the bag. It was more of a sack, really. He untied the knot holding it closed, reached in, and pulled out a object wrapped in a cloth. When he unwrapped it, he revealed a mirror, rectangular and framed in wood. He handed it out to Anya. "Here. What do you see?"

(He dropped a bag with a mirror on the ground. Good thinking, Seth. XD)
Anya followed him out into the night. There was a chill settling in, reminding them that it would not be long at all before the snow begins. Winter approached fast this close to the mountains. They would have a month or two to prepare, but it would be here all the same.
As she stopped beside Stel while Seth went to retrieve whatever he had to show her, Corrik lifted his head and nudged her gently. The male dragon had taken up spot nearly Stel. There was no real reason, but he had been doing that a lot recently. Anya chalked that up to him finally making friends with the other dragon, and with her being injured, his natural protectiveness must be kicking in. Anya lifted her hand and rubbed the smooth scales of his nose until Seth finally found what he was looking for. Then she used both hands to take the item. Her eyebrows furrowed slightly as she took in the simple details of he mirror, trying to find something usually that might have made it stand out to Seth. She found none. "I see a mirror," she replied slowly.
