The small silver tabby buried herself deeper into the space between Echomist’s warm belly and Lethe, praying to the stars above that what the clan-cats were saying was untrue. Why did they want to change her name? Not even just her’s but Lethe’s and Fate’s too! Sleep pulled at her eyes but she wouldn't permit it as she poked her head up to looked to her siblings. Their sides rose and fell softly as their lungs filled with sleep, their faces holding peace for the first time in awhile. Ebbe couldn’t help but imagine what lives they were living in their sweet slumber. Were they dreaming of the sweet aroma of green-leaf their mother sang so fondly of? Maybe perhaps they were having a night full of chasing hares like father talked about, lush hills rolling with green grasses and splotches of wildflowers, their pungent fragrance clinging to their fur and lingering for the briefest moment as they pushed sleep from their eyes. Or maybe, just maybe they they curled into the warmth of them in the den, enveloped with nothing but reassurance that everything was alright. She could only lay there and pray to the stars above that their nights were full of sweetly fabricated tales, better than the ones they were living now. She missed her family, with the entirety of her broken heart.
Her heart sank. Twice her heart had grown weary and she had only just awoken. Would this be how the rest of her days carried on? Strange cats spinning her strange tales of her mother, questioning why she so dearly wanted to hold onto the little bits of her that she had left, and a sinking heart? Be wondered how long one could keep a sinking heart in the confines of a cat’s chest before it disappeared. Would it ever disappear? She couldn't help but find herself questioning their motives. Why did the clan-cats want to strip everything they called familiar away from them? Would her refusal to take up a clan name, like her mother’s as they said, really be that disastrous? How could it!
“Your mother loved the name given to her by the clan.” Her heart clenched at the she-cat’s words. Augustpetal. If she were here now would her eyes reflect the same amount of confusion and disappointment as the two gray cats that stood before her?
“I love the name my mother gave me…” she said softly. Her head hung between her shoulders in heavy defeat and exhaustion, not even daring to pick it up to meet the cat’s eyes. She knew all too well that they would only think little of her because - well, she was little.
Ebbe couldn’t help but press into Echomist’s muzzle as she brought it to her side, thankful for the comfort that the queen offered to her and her siblings. Allowing her body to lower she curled back up into Echomist’s belly, burying her head into her siblings fur and finally allowing sleep to weigh her eyes down. She prayed she dreamed of Augustpetal and Silas, or somewhere far from here.

Milkpaw shoved the mangled feathery mass towards Frostpaw, her arm straining to push the bird in front of the tom. She didn’t want the bird to fall short and give the tom any reason to move closer to her. Though she hated to make assumptions about anyone she could see the tom taking advantage of that sort of situation and closing the distance between them. It wasn’t so much that she didn’t like the tom, her feelings towards the tom had already been addressed, but she did prefer him at a distance just like everyone else. At a tail’s length, that was still her standing rule. She often hated sharing prey with her clanmates, the thought of personal space always seemed to slip their mind and it was hard for her to enforce the tail length rule without offending cats.
The soft molly let out a huff as she rolled her glowing eyes.
“It was quite the exaggeration, don’t take it so much to heart”
Part of her was surprised that the tom took her words as a compliment, did he not sense her sarcasm? Her brows furrowed slightly as she replayed her words in her head, maybe she wasn’t good at making jokes. Then again, Frostpaw would be the one to over look sarcasm and take something as such to heart. Well- if it made him happy then she wasn’t going to put any sort of damper on his reality and object. As soon as her words were out of her mouth they were no longer hers so it really wasn’t her place to correct him and explain how she meant it. It was her fault that she hadn’t executed it in a more thorough manner.
A small sigh passed through the black-and-white fae’s lips as she leisurely scanned the clearing once again. Maybe he went out on a patrol or someth-… Something fluttered in her chest as her golden pools fell upon the russet colored brute. Was it her heart? She couldn’t tell. Whatever it was, it finally sank deep into her stomach. She watched with careful eyes as Baybone talked to Cardinalsong. He was smiling. Oh! How she missed the days before her apprenticeship. She missed the nursery, when Baybone was Baybone with the kind heart and soft eyes, not some angry fool. She wished, from the depths of her weak little heart, that he would somewhere find forgiveness in his heart. She understood why he was angry, why he blamed her for his mentors death, but she didn’t know how much longer she could stand being in the same camp with him as angry as he was. Milkpaw continued to stare after him with full eyes, her body locked into place.
Move.
The command was simple but the action slightly more difficult. The feline’s limbs ached slightly in defiance as she demanded them to shift with the weight they suddenly didn’t seem to have enough energy to carry. It was time to get on with her duties, now.
Move.
She reminded herself again.
Finally breaking her gaze from the two cats she refocused on Frostpaw and the half eaten bird. Her stomach clenched and churned as her vision absorbed the mangled creature. She no longer had an appetite for the bird much anything else.
“You can have the rest, I’m not that hungry…”
She knew that if she committed to eating the bird that they would be in camp longer, she was a slow eater. She silently hoped that Frostpaw wasn’t and that he would just scarf the damn thing down. Why am I even waiting… The thought surprised her. Several times this morning she had considered her existence in relation to Frostpaw’s. She kept considering the days events with him right there with her. Oh! How long had it been since she had a companion? Was that a smile? Twinkling in the corner of her mouth? Whatever it was it was gone before anyone had time to notice, tucked back in neatly. Milkpaw refocused her eyes once again on Frostpaw, all she had to do was focus on something besides him, she just needed to avoid looking at him, if she couldn't see him then he couldn't see her, right?

Ebbe didn’t remember walking back to the nest to reunite with her siblings. She was sure that she had finally given in to exhaustion and either fell asleep right there in the mouth of the tunnel beside Echomist or was too tired to even recall going back to the nursery. Regardless of how she ended up in the nest, the sleep was necessary but she still needed more rest. If she could get more rest.
The sound of Echomist’s voice had awaken her and it was only after a few passing moments did she realize that she was talking to someone else. Stirring groggily, Ebbe briefly blinked open her icy blue eyes to be met with three more pairs. Annoyance bubbles inside her tiny chest as they discussed her and their siblings right over their very heads.
”I don’t want my name to be changed..” a voice squeaked from the bundles. She buried her head back into Lethe, curling in on herself even tighter after speaking, immediately regretting saying anything and drawing attention to herself. She didn’t want to change her name! Why would they want to change their name !

She couldn’t help but scrunch her nose at his remark. He still thought that he was smooth. Typical. Milkpaw hadn’t known the tom long but she could see that he prided himself with his carefully chosen words. Though, she had to admit that the shock of his responses dragged her out of her dreary head and into his dreary commentary. Who was she kidding she found his responses enjoyable. Yes, thats right. She enjoyed them.
She twitched her whiskers as he batted the thrush towards her. She was thankful for his pick. If she had to eat another lousy squirrel.. well she might as well just jump off the lousy cliffs into the lousy sea and drown her lousy self. But that was a tad dramatic.
Her burning eyes looked down at the thrush. It wasn’t too small, it wasn’t pitiful, but it also wasn’t a plump green leaf thrush. How she yearned for green-leaf. Silence drew between them as she continued to stare at the bird, memories of warm breezes, golden seas and soft mist filling her pretty little head.
“You must really pride yourself with such smooth remarks…” her tone was serious as she bent down but her orange gaze was warm as she flicked her eyes up at him. Her eyes returned to the thrush and took a bite out of the truth before he could see the smile creep onto her face, the warm taste flooding her mouth.
She could make jokes too.

Milkpaw was only half listening to her companion as her eyes continued to scan the camp for the brute. She didn't trust the safety of the camp that it subsequently (idk if I'm using this word right) had offered her before. She couldn’t help but question that though. Had it ever offered her safety? When she was brought to camp cats spoke her name with such distain, as if it left an awful taste in their mouth. And for what? She no doubt believed it was because of her kitty-pet blood and that the death of her farther was her fault.
It was her fault. How could it not be! If it wasn’t for her very existence Graywater would still be- well Graywater. Not some bones in the ground. She didn’t believe that he was casted somewhere up in the night sky, she didn’t believe in starclan, but nobody knew that and didn’t need to.
Completely lost in her thoughts once again she didn’t notice Frostpaw stopping at the fresh-kill pile to retrieve a bird and accidentally walked into him, her coat brushing against his. It had only been a slight bump, nothing of any concern or deserving of too much attention but it still cause Milkpaw’s pelt to grow hot with embarrassment. Mouse brain! Watch where you’re walking! She inwardly scolded herself.
“I-I uh… Yes. ready. I-I uh I’m sorry,” she spoke in a soft voice, obviously flustered with herself.
Her body tensed as she awaited some kind of comment from the tom, surely he’d call her mousebrain or something. So much for finally finding someone to befriend. Befriend? Was she trying to make friends now? She was actually losing it.
She followed after Frostpaw, her body becoming more tense as they moved closer to the clearing. Why did he have to pick a spot that was in the open where everyone could see them! Dread weighed heavy in the pit of her stomach as she sat close to him.. but not too close.
Her amber eyes fell onto his smile and she forced herself to settle down. It’s ok. There’s no wrong way to eat a bird… or was there? She shook her head slightly in hopes of ridding her head of such worries and negative thoughts and offered Frostpaw a meek smile, thankful for his cheery persona. "Uh good pick, thrush is good."
Good pick? Thrush is good? You sound flea-brained. She just wanted to eat the bird and be out of camp as soon as possible. The apprentice knew she would be fine outside of camp, she always was. It was the cold walls of camp that drove her into such a dark place. Maybe she could join a patrol or something, anything at this point.

Baybone moved towards his clanmates as they organized patrols among themselves in the absence of Cinderspark. Good riddance! He had watched on with gleaming green eyes as Silverstar demoted their deputy. He couldn't help but take side with the others who looked on in disgust that Cinderspark, their deputy, would break the code for some she-cat. The clan was more important than chasing after some mouse-brained molly. Or tom for that matter! Augustpetal left the clan for some flea-bag and he had come waltzing in with the dead molly's kits, how considerate. He rolled his eyes to himself, how any cat could even consider breaking the code was beyond him. But Graywater did... The thought of the kind-hearted and most importantly dead tom left a sour taste in his mouth. Graywater had gone to meet with his sweetheart to only have her dump some other cats kits on him. Being the kind-hearted cat Bay knew him as he agreed to take them to the clan and had been struck dead on the thunderpath all because of her. Milkpaw. If it hadn't been for the black-and-white molly's very existence than perhaps the large gray tom would't be looking down from star clan. No. He was sure that Graywater would be alive. Nobody would be dead if it hadn't been for cats outside the clan...
"Good morning Baybone". The voice pulled Baybone from his thoughts (thankfully) and he turned to face the she-cat. A small smile danced on his lips as his eyes fell upon her.
"Good morning Cardinalsong."
Cardinalsong! That was it! He knew it would come to him eventually. His smile continued to dance as his mind reeled back to a little time ago when he had first spoken to Cardinalsong. He was sure they had spoken to her before he had fallen, he was sure he spoke to all of his clanmates, but he hadn't remembered much of conversations and it had felt like he was speaking for the first time to some cats, Cardinalsong being one of them.
"How are you doing?" He inquired, his ears flicking slightly as the chatter of his roommates surrounding them rose and fell.

The large russet tom sat at the mouth of the tunnel and watched as the sun crawled out from behind the horizon, it's warm red glow washing over the fresh blanket of snow. A small smile danced on his lips at the beautiful sight, unlike many of his clanmates he thoroughly enjoyed the snow. Surely it chased away all the fat prey and slimmed them down and pushed sickness into the camp, but that was just the way things went! Nobody could really put blame on the weather when it made the forest look so beautiful. His clanmates just didn't understand- either that or he had missed something.
Frustration began to bubble inside of him. Surely he had missed something! It had been almost 2 moons- or had it been 2 moons? However long! Baybone had lost part of his memory. They had told him that he had gone out on a patrol with Dewstripe and a couple of others and had light heartily accepted the challenge of climbing the highest tree. Him being his boastful self scaled the tree with ease. However he as well as everyone else did no anticipate the branch to break right out from under him. Dewstripe had visited him once in the Medicine cat den and told him that he plummeted down like a rock and knocked all sense out of his head. Baybone couldn't do much but believe her and offer her a weak laugh to show that he was ok. He was ok! He was great! He still had his strength and abilities to be a great warrior, he just forgot a couple of things along the way. Probably best, the lot that he called his clanmates seemed a little dreadful and high strung.
Baybone leaned back and stretched himself out before turning back into the camp, they would be joining patrols soon. He took note that his paws itched to be outside. Maybe he would see familiar faces in one of the groups. Like Cardinalwing! Wait.. That wasn’t it. Cardinalwind? No... It would come to him once he saw her, he was sure of it. .

Milkpaw scanned the clearing for the russet tom, Baybone, and sighed with relief when she couldn't see him anywhere. Maybe he went out on an earlier patrol, she thought, silently praying she was right. The last thing she needed was a tense encounter with her brother. Could she even call him that anymore? She knew that they weren't blood related - oh no, he made sure that she got that "through that pretty little head of your's[her's] as he had so kindly told her. But that wasn't what she was concerned about. They had shared a special bond before he had knocked all memory out of his big head. She would have to come to a decision about it later, now was not the time to consider such things in the company of others. She would revisit the thought at another time when she was alone.
"You are never alone, Milkpaw"
Her brothers voice rang in her head. She couldn't help but remember what Baybone had told her almost over a moon ago, just before his accident. His voice was soft but still managed to cut deep inside her. Even now, as a memory his words wounded her. Milkpaw let out a sigh as her body suddenly felt heavy. Everything was touching her this morning. It was such a fragile feeling to have someone tell you over and over a over that you weren't alone, never alone.
Carefully she made her way towards the fresh-kill pile, looking over her shoulder to see if Frostpaw was following along. She was greeted with his twinkling eyes and warm smile and she couldn't help but offer a small smile. She was spending a considerable amount of time with the tom. Yes they had exchanged words here and there, gone on the same patrols, passed by each other in camp. She could recall speaking to him at her first gathering which was only a moon ago. But it was all just simple conversation- gray and dull. Nothing like now..
"I'd share with you everyday, Milkpaw."
The comment caught her slightly off-guard. Everyday? That was a lot of days. Too many days. But little did she know that his words rang true and from that moment on they would share their meal the next morning, and the morning after that, and the morning after that.
She slowed her pace and fell in beside him so that she didn't have to turn to speak to him. "Ok... well.. do you have a preference for feathers or fur?" she gently inquired. Milkpaw didn't have much of a preference, especially in this kind of weather, she liked anything that wasn't a pitiful scrap of skin and bones.
