Why on earth have they got a chapter dedicated to being a chapter from Crowfeather’s trial but in a different POV rather than address things like being exiled by ShadowClan, the fallout of the WindClan coup, or the eclipse battle

The book just casually skipping the entirety of PoT and OoTS-
Anyone else hoping to see the Eclipse battle, be sorely disappointed :/ also, a “whole crowd of Darkkits” is kind of funny

Chapter 17: Harespring suggests to Onestar that they ask ThunderClan for help against the stoats. Onestar’s fur bristled. Harespring had asked for ThunderClan’s help before and he had refused. Onestar had to admit to himself that Harespring was doing the duty of a good deputy but his belly still rolled with fury at the thought of going back on his words of so many seasons ago. Onestar tries to tell him off, as this is the first Gathering since the Great Battle and there are more important things to discuss. Harespring still tries to persuade him but he refuses. Harespring unhappily tells him that he knows that Onestar only chose him to make a point that Dark Forest trainees can be trusted but he remembers how much Onestar admired Ashfoot and how much he took her advice. Onestar feels darkness enfold him at the mention of Ashfoot. Her death still haunted him. He respected Harespring, but couldn’t rely on him the way he relied on Ashfoot. Onestar insults Harespring that if he had a fraction of Ashfoot’s knowledge he would listen to him, but he doesn’t. Onestar realizes he has gone too far and tells Harespring he will have to earn his trust. They discuss who to take at the Gathering. Harespring objects to Onestar’s suggestions of Breezepelt and Weaselfur. He doesn’t want the other Clans to think he is ashamed of Breezepelt. Harespring points out that Weaselfur is spitefully accusing Breezepelt and shouldn’t be rewarded, Onestar privately realizes he is right but he would seem weak if he backs down now.
Onestar tells the Clans that Nightcloud is dead. Bramblestar accuses Onestar of not telling ThunderClan about the stoats. Onestar privately notes that he knew very well that ThunderClan already knew about the stoats as their warriors caught his emerging from the tunnels on ThunderClan territory. Onestar cant help enjoying Bramblestar’s discomfited expression when Mistystar tells him off. Onestar is about to step back when Weaselfur accuses Breezepelt of Nightcloud’s murder. Onestar draws in a breath of pure fury and realizes Harespring was right about Weaselfur. As Weaselfur goes on, Onestar is not sure what to do and it was too late to do anything as WindClan’s most private affairs were being revealed. He thinks that Weaselfur will be on dawn patrol for at least a moon. Onestar is worried that Breezepelt will break the Gathering truce when he charges at Spiderleg. Onestar tries to tell him to stop but he doesn’t listen. Onestar has no idea what to do and is relieved when Jayfeather intervenes. They discuss Kestrelflight’s vision. Bramblestar asks why he wasn’t told about this, Onestar replies it was a WindClan vision, both Bramblestar and Onestar are putting in effort to stay calm and hold on to their patience. Onestar wonders if Harespring had been right and that he should be prepared for ThunderClan and WindClan to work together as it would be a way of honoring Firestar’s memory and creating a good relationship with the new ThunderClan leader. Onestar is super glad the Gathering is over.
As he is about to jump off the tree, Bramblestar comments about Crowfeather and Breezepelt in a friendly tone. Onestar agrees with him and calmly talks with him, but is worried that Bramblestar might know about Smoke and Darkkit, as some WindClan warriors knew his secret and it was possible for word to spread, especially during Great Journey. Onestar wonders what it would be like and mean for a Clan leader to have a secret over him. He scolds himself and calls himself a fool to think that Bramblestar would be just like Firestar and that Ashfoot was right about not trusting the other Clans and that he shouldn’t have listened to that naïve Harespring, who has as much sense as a kit in the nursery.
He rejects Bramblestar’s help, much to the latter’s shock but Bramblestar tells him to let him know if he changes his mind. Onestar cannot stop thinking about Smoke and Darkkit now even though he hadn’t thought of them in moons. He has a dream in which fire encompasses the old territory. He desperately calls for Smoke and Darkkit, wanting to save them, when a fully grown Darkkit attacks him and slashes at his throat. Onestar wakes up and stumbles to the open. A white shape attacks. He wonders if Darkkit is here and remembers Stoneteller’s prophecy. He then sees a whole crowd of Darkkits attack the camp and realizes they are stoats, confused by their white bodies and black tails.
No way they actually just skipped it...

No, but seriously, at this point, I wouldn't even be surprised if the Erins (writers and editors included) just forgot the battle even took place at all! The only way I can think of it being addressed is if some cat who hasn't gotten a PoV yet and still participated in the battle got a novella or something.

This book is taking the cake for 2nd worst SE (after YS) That first place is still reserved for Squirrelflight's Hope in my opinion. But I do get where you're coming from. And I even pre-ordered Onestar's Confession thinking this might be an interesting insight into my least favorite character...AND THE ECLIPSE BATTLE! But hey, at least the cover is nice *sobs*

I'm literally laughing right now because of how ridiculous the pacing is! And if we go with my theory that the majority of the book is just one big flashback while Onestar waits for StarClan to decide what do with him, this implies that he'd either blocked out the Eclipse battle or it just wasn't important enough for him to reminisce on.

PoT continues to be disrespected by the writing team. Supporting cast killed off massively and anything outside of the Three plot is completely forgotten.

Am I the only one not surprised by and even enjoying how Onestar is being written and the actions and decisions he’s making? We knew he was an absolute coward, we knew he caves to his guilt and fears, we know he Smoke and Darktail dirty. If anything, I’m glad to see a POV of a cat that is anything but a hero no matter how much he thinks he can try to be. I don’t like Onestar because of his actions or choices, because who would? But I do like the character for being completely consistent in the series and for showing that cowardly mindset in a position of leadership. I hope he gets his karma, and I hope he goes through hell for his choices, it’ll be all the more enjoyable to read. Characters like Onestar are the kinds of morally grey characters that just really fascinate me in how far they can fall and keep falling farther. I gotta get my own copy asap. I suppose. Personally I don't like Onestar, never did, and I knew a POV on him would be awful no matter what, but with the way things are going, it's even more worse than I thought it would be, worse than Leopardstar's SE. Leopardstar did what she did because she personally believed it to be the right thing, she did morally wrong things for the right reasons to help her clan, and realizes the errors of her ways later. But she still had enough time to turn her life around and serve her clan properly in a way that didn't make RiverClan weak. So she comes off as lawful evil if anything. But Onestar is just quite literally worse so far. You have him being an unreliable narrator, AND other cats around him trying to justify his actions, when that shouldn't be the case at all?? And he has so many opportunities to do what is right, he's self-aware of what he's doing wrong, but does nothing and let his problems stew in a pot. It pushes him into neutral evil territory, and he comes off as way more selfish than I thought he initially was. Everything he's doing is for his own gain and image, and out of cowardly habit. It's frustrating imo, like I guess I expected better?? And the pacing doesn't doesn't help either. That’s fair! I like him being selfish in terms of actually being a character with a personality for once, even if it’s not the kind of personality that would be popular. I think it’s because I didn’t expect better from him that we see it differently, but that’s still valid and I don’t expect anyone to enjoy the character. I gotta read the full thing before I decide if the other characters truly are trying to justify his actions.

You have him being an unreliable narrator Would he be considered one, though? I don't know, this could absolutely be due to how I've been taught, but considering we know what Onestar was like long before he got his story told and the narrative makes it pretty clear whenever he lies to himself, I'm not sure if that would be an accurate term for him. Again, this could absolutely just be how I've been taught how to make use of the trope.

I wouldn't mind a Heathertail novella either way, though, even if she is far from my favorite. Yeah, the only reason I can see it being Heathertail is because it would cover her relationship turmoil between both Lionblaze and Breezepelt, and there's no way to avoid the Eclipse battle because of that. Not to mention, she knew the kits ran their mouths about the tunnels, which were later used in that fight, so her seeing a scene where that's brought up to Onestar, and even Onestar approaching Leopardstar about the idea would make sense.
It could work for Reedwhisker too, but we'd get less information out of it only because Reedwhisker wasn't deputy yet at the time, and if he did get a novella there really wouldn't be a reason to flashback that far.

Just made an account to post this but dang... this super edition sure is a doozy. Thank you for your service Some thoughts: this is such a disappointing SE because most of it is stuff we've seen. In general I cannot stand cradle to grave stories in media (I have a particular distaste for biopics) and I feel like WC brings out the worst in that. The issue is that we saw mudclaw's rebellion, we saw his leadership in Crowfeather's trial and we've seen most of this stuff in one super edition or another. Onepaw is such a boring character even when his extremely annoying trait of "telling cats to not do something, but does the exact thing 5 seconds later with zero self awareness" pops up.
There is so much here that could have been explored. Windclan's exile and Gorsepaw are both massive holes in Onestar's story but his relationship with his daughter is skipped completely as is anything remotely interesting in the Power of Three. Remember the eclipse?? the erins sure didn't.
What a waste of paper, I feel bad for Onestar fans Y'all deserved better

Honestly...the pacing in LH was better than this. The only disappointment for LH's pacing was that we didn't see the time leading up to her eventual death, but we still saw enough, of her early life. There weren't major time skips, and actually was very consistent from her kit-hood to her young adult life as a newly made leader.
But OC just feels like a jumbled mess, all over the place, and it doesn't help that they're skipping such major plot points, and missing out on important relationship screen time??? I'm just...ugh.

In particular I'm so sad about the Windclan exile thing because its so fascinating and unexplored. Windclan deserves a much better story about this, it'd be our first good journey story.
I also had a few headcanons regarding the exile that I was hoping would be somewhat touched on in the book. The main one being who killed Badgerfang. I know it would never happen but I think it would have been extremely interesting if Onestar, in a blind panic during the battle, killed Badgerfang. After realizing what he has done he flees and internalizes the guilt for the rest of his life. It wouldn't make Onestar villainous (more of a hawkheart heat of the battle moment without the taunting) but I feel like the right writer can flesh it out and connect to other events of his life

I’m not particularly let down because I never ever thought a Onestar book would be good. I went into this thread (and pre-ordered the book days before it) knowing that nothing could make me love Onestar. Especially not an SE about him. But still thought reading certain events from his PoV could be at least interesting. No such luck considering just how many crucial moments are missing (the entire first arc and PoT/OotS as well) The pacing is just so off overall.

Disappointed so far. Not just because of everything many people have said so far (time skips, missing scenes, etc) but also because Onestar is entirely unsympathetic. Makes for a more boring character study.

Chapter 18: Onestar throws himself into the fight with the stoats He calls for Breezepelt and Harespring, two of his strongest warriors, but Harespring is buried around stoats and Breezepelt is missing. Heathertail is also missing. Crowfeather had been exiled few days before and Nightcloud was presumed dead. Three of the Clan’s best warriors were missing when they were needed the most. He sees stoats heading for the elder’s den. He pounces on one, it goes limp but as he lets it drop it sinks its fangs into its shoulders and and another one slashes its claws on Onestar’s side at the same time. Onestar loses a life.
Tallsar, Mudclaw, Stagleap and Wrenflight are in front of him. Tallstar warns him that the dream he was having before the battle is just a taste about what is really to come. Onestar gasps how they know about the dream, Mudclaw says they are StarClan – they know almost everything. He tells Onestar that the past catches up with them. Onestar is uncomfortable that Mudclaw knows his secret, but Onestar doesn’t know what to do about Smoke and Darkkit now. Tallstar says that it isn’t too late and that Onestar must return.
He wakes up in the medicine cat’s den. Whitetail assures him everything is fine and only he died. They brood about Heathertail missing and Onestar remembers how she wanted him to ask ThunderClan for help but how Onestar refused because he suspected Bramblestar of knowing his secret. Emberfoot alerts Onestar about cats returning. Onestar pads into camp and sees Crowfeather, Nightcloud and all the missing cats. His relief at seeing his daughter is so great and feels a surge of optimism and is confident things will soon be right in WindClan, which will allow him to turn to things he should have dealt with long ago, and it isn’t too late to do right by Smoke and Darkkit
