These don't have chapters so I'm going to be doing it bit-by-bit. Newleaf is coming, and Nightpelt reflects that despite their hardships, their group is doing rather well. He also admits that he's finding it easier settling into his role as their leader. He's out hunting, and decides to catch a plump mouse for Archeye. He spots one, but before he can catch it, a small brown tabby barrels into his view and catches the mouse, startling Nightpelt. The brown tabby then meets another small brown cat, and the two freak out over the big mouse.
Nightpelt recognizes them as Littlepaw and Volepaw. Littlepaw is the one who caught the mouse. Brownpaw also has yellow eyes, and is just a solid brown cat with a lighter underside. Nightpelt calls out their names, but Littlepaw and Volepaw start hissing at Nightpelt, telling him to back off, and the mouse is theirs. Volepaw quips that they're ShadowClan apprentices, and not a "Clan out outcasts". Nightpelt, amused, snorts that what the two are is simply ill-mannered, and then adds that they can keep the mouse, noticing how small and thin the two look. Nightpelt asks why Brokenstar lets them get so thin. The two ignore him, and snarl that they don't need Nightpelt's permission to take prey. They're going to be warriors very soon, and can hunt for themselves.
Nightpelt's eyes widen in horror, and thinks that the two should only barely be apprentices now, and they're both so young. Nightpelt asks Volepaw if he'd like to come see his mother, as he's sure Featherstorm would love to hear all about his training. Volepaw seems to want to for a moment, but then sees Littlepaw glaring at him and says no. Volepaw says that Brokenstar enforces the fact that they need to be strong and protect their borders from intruders, and that family ties and elders don't matter. Nightpelt asks again if he's sure he doesn't want to see her. Volepaw hesitates, but then Littlepaw snarls "Seriously?" and says they need to get going, as their mentors are certainly waiting for them at Carrionplace.
Nightpelt, horrified again, demands to know why they're going there. Littlepaw and Volepaw explain that as part of their warrior assessment, they need to learn how to kill rats. Nightpelt says rats are dangerous, and remembers how Foxheart died to them, coldly snarking that the rats "never gave Foxheart a chance, did they?"
Volepaw and Littlepaw argue that their mentors, Brokenstar and Clawface, are ShadowClan's strongest warriors, and they only learn from the best. They add that when they become warriors early, they'll have bragging rights against their littermates. Nightpelt huffs that if they're going to Carrionplace, he's coming with them.
Now at Carrionplace, Nightpelt recoils from the stench. Volepaw grumbles that they didn't ask Nightpelt to come, and he doesn't belong here. Nightpelt, looking down at Carrionplace, snorts that no cat belongs here. Brokenstar and Clawface are sitting at the Carrionplace fence, and Brokenstar bellows tha the two of them are late. The apprentices apologize, scurrying to their mentors' sides.
Brokenstar issues a stiff nod to Nightpelt. Clawface, more warmly, says he didn't expect to see him here, and asks how the elders are faring. Nightpelt bluntly tells him that they're fine, but turns his gaze to Brokenstar and snarls that it's ridiculous to be fighting rats. Having kits fight rats no less. Brokenstar mutters that it's for the good of the Clan, as it'll make the apprentices stronger and dwindle the rat numbers. Brokenstar then says that if Nightpelt were smarter, then he would have made Brokenstar fight rats when he was his apprentice, as opposed to useless things like hunting. Nightpelt breaks his gaze and says he clearly never managed to teach Brokenstar anything. Brokenstar concurs, and adds that he really should have had a better mentor.
Nightpelt looks to Clawface, and presses that surely he must know how dangerous the rats can be. Clawface only says that the apprentices will be fine, as they're going to be monitoring them. Brokenstar snorts that Nightpelt was always a coward. Nightpelt thinks to himself that he's not a coward, as he's stepped up as a leader, fought off a fox, and took care of his group during leaf-bare. Brokenstar simply never realized Nightpelt's strengths.

That is certainly an interesting scene to start off with after the excerpt! I don't remember Littlepaw/cloud to ever be particularly aggressive in any book so it will be interesting to see this for myself soon. Although it does make sense considering how ShadowClan is currently getting run by Brokenstar here. Also speaking of which, Brokenstar is still out here mad at Nightpelt for "being a weak mentor" according to him. Classic.

Aggressive Littlepaw? I do remember his eyes shining over Badgerfang being a true StC warrior after he died. But never being that aggressive. When you said that Brownpaw has yellow eyes, I'm assuming you meant Volepaw. And Foxheart's death is even mentioned here. So that explains things about no one visiting the elders. I always wondered why Hollyflower's kits, Poolcloud's son and Featherstorm's kits never tried to visit their parents. Brokenstar absolutely despises Nightpelt as a mentor. Even wishing that Nightpelt had trained him against rats, instead of hunting.

I wonder what's going to happen to Littlepaw to cause him to stop being so aggressive- I can't wait to see that in the rest of the book. I feel so bad to Nightheart too- he wants to make sure the apprentices stay safe and everyone else just goes "Who cares?"

Brokenstar orders the apprentices to go into Carrionplace. As both go in, Clawface assures Nightpel that if they get overwhelmed, they'll step in. Littlepaw and Volepaw start padding around the fence, but as soon as a rat appears, the two suddenly look scared as the rat hisses at them. It lunges for Littlepaw, who screeches for it to get off. Volepaw wrestles it away from him, but then he gets overwhelmed by the rat and gets a nasty wound on his left hind leg from it. Nightpelt pleads that they need to help them, but Clawface holds him back, explaining that they aren't until Brokenstar says. Nightpelt snorts that the apprentices are going to be killed if they don't, but then starts coughing and wheezing through his sentence.
Littlepaw and Volepaw bellow Brokenstar's name, and say they killed the rat. Littlepaw is standing over it triumphantly, while Volepaw staggers on his side due to the heavy bleeding of his wound. As they look at the older cats, two more rats appear and leap onto the apprentices. Nightpelt catches his breath and pleads to Brokenstar that they can't stand by and watch. Brokenstar only replies that doing this will make the apprentices stronger. Littlepaw is struggling against a rat, while Volepaw is overwhelmed the other. Nightpelt tells Brokenstar that he doesn't care, and rushes to help the two, heaving the rat off Volepaw.
Clawface looks at Brokenstar, who rolls his eyes and says that Clawface can go on, if he must. Littlepaw and Volepaw manage to kill Littlepaw's rat, and affirm that it's dead. Clawface and Nightpelt chase off Volepaw's rat, but Nightpelt begins coughing again, and so Clawface finishes driving it off. As Volepaw and Littlepaw lick their wounds, Clawface asks Nightpelt if he's okay and if he's hurt, helping Nightpelt get to his feet, but Brokenstar demands they all leave, and to leave Nightpelt behind. Nightpelt, unable to stop coughing, starts heading back to his camp.

Nightpelt is such a legend for always wanting to step in for others. Also, good on Clawface for helping his brother. And there is that wound Volepaw "died off". Who knows if that will still be the case considering the spoilers on *Faith*'s EfSh thread or if he still just dies later on in the book from the infection. We'll have to wait and see.

As Nightpelt returns to camp, Featherstorm, having scented Volepaw all over Nightpelt, demands to know what happened to him. Nightpelt, still unable to catch his breath, tries to explain, but he's interupted by Runningnose and Clawface who appear with a wounded Volepaw. Featherstorm rushes over to him with Nightpelt, and Runningnose explains that while Littlepaw's wounds were minor, the rat cut something vital in Volepaw's leg, and Volepaw will never walk properly again. Volepaw, seeing Featherstorm, tries to greet her, but then collapses and starts apologizing as Featherstorm comforts him.
Runningnose explains that when Brokenstar saw Volepaw's wound, he ordered to not waste herbs on a useless cat and cast him out of camp to die. Clawface says he helped sneak Volepaw out of camp, and Runningnose asks Nightpelt to take care of Volepaw, and the poor kit deserves a second chance. Nightpelt says of course, but asks what will happen to Clawface and Runningnose. Runningnose admits that they told Brokenstar that Volepaw died. Clawface quips that it's not like he'll spend much time mourning.
Featherstorm, Ashfur, and Archeye assist in helping Volepaw to their den. Nightpelt asks where Yellowfang is, as surely she would have tried to save Volepaw. Runningnose explains that she's been away for a few days, and then says that he's not going to tell Yellowfang. Nightpelt asks why not. Runningnose grunts that Yellowfang would fight Brokenstar on it, and he can't bear to see what Brokenstar might do to her, and Nightpelt knows as much as he does that Brokenstar doesn't like being argued with. Every cat in ShadowClan, barring he and Clawface, need to think that Volepaw died of his wound. Clawface grunts that Runningnose is right.
Nightpelt scowls at Clawface, and asks why he's here considering that he thought Clawface believed everything Brokenstar does is perfect. Clawface glowers, and says Brokenstar is a great leader and will make ShadowClan the strongest Clan in the forest. He then lowers his head, and admits that he just couldn't let Volepaw die without trying to help him. Then he looks back to Nightpelt, grumbling that weakness must be a family trait. Nightpelt, smiling a little, says it's not weakness at all, and he admires what Clawface is doing. Clawface turns away, and mutters they should go before things get suspicious.
Some time later, even though Brokenstar doesn't let Runningnose visit them, they're all watching Volepaw recover. Nightpelt internally thinks that while Volepaw's leg will surely recover with time, Volepaw's confidence might need more work.
Nightpelt and Volepaw are now sitting together outside. Volepaw then says he finally understands why Nightpelt was cast out. He then says that he's useless now with his leg, and Brokenstar was right to throw him out. Nightpelt insists he's not useless, and he just needs time. Volepaw, expressionless, says that he can hardly walk now, let alone be a warrior. Nightpelt begins to say his name, but Volepaw says he's tired and limps back to his den, wanting to sleep. Nightpelt follows him and sees Volepaw struggle to settle down, and thinks to himself that he'll make sure Volepaw will be a warrior, and just wishes Volepaw could see it.

So here is the "faking Volepaw's death" (for now) scene. Brokenstar is truly such a foxheart (sorry Foxheart). Clawface showing some basic decency by helping Volepaw, who knows how long it will last until he chooses Brokenstar over his actual Clan and Clanmates.

Again, poor Volepaw. :c I already knew he survived and now permanently has a limp leg. But it's still so sad considering how young he was. And the fact that Brokenstar decided to just cast him out to die instead of trying to help him really shows his cruelty. Clawface is still an avid supporter of Brokenstar, but even he has standards.

Nightpelt and Featherstorm are laying in the sun, watching Volepaw. As they do, Nightpelt suddenly scents ShadowClan and orders Featherstorm to hide Volepaw. As they disappear into the den, a scrawny gray cat with blue eyes and a torn ear, a gray-and-white cat, a ginger cat with white underbelly and legs, and a reddish-brown cat appear. They barge into the camp, take a mouse, and as Nightpelt tries to demand an answer, the gray cat with a torn ear snarls that it's none of his business, and WindClan will never see them coming. As the three leave, Nightpelt thinks to himself that this is no way for Volepaw to live; hiding constantly in fear of being discovered. We don't get names for these four cats at all. Any guesses?

How rude of them to just barge in like that and basically steal prey from their own elders. The only two cats whose potential identities I can think of are Boulder (scrawny gray cat with blue eyes and a torn ear) and Russetfur (reddish-brown cat).

This scene was realised months ago and the apprentice looked like Littlepaw. That's interesting. The rude blue-eyed gray cat with a torn ear is most likely Boulder since that is his description. The reddish tabby I think is Russetfur. I don't think the orange cat with white paws and underbelly even matches anyone. Brightflower is orange, but she doesn't have any white on her. The gray-and-white cat could be Finchflight, who is black-and-white.

Also, it's time for WindClan to be driven out it seems. This also means that the wiki needs to change Volepaw's icon StC pic. Right now it's one of a kit who died, but we know now that this wasn't the case.

Nightpelt is later out hunting by himself, and comes across Yellowfang sitting by herself in the woods. He greets her, but then notices her watching a fight on the other side to the WindClan border. Yellowfang huffs that it's yet another battle on WindClan territory, and this time, Brokenstar's taken Badgerpaw into battle despite him being only three moons old. Nightpelt mutters that perhaps StarClan, in their own twisted way, are proud of Brokenstar considering they haven't tried to stop him. Yellowfang grumbles perhaps so, considering Brokenstar did make good on his vow to make ShadowClan feared. Nightpelt says he finds it hard to believe they'd like all the needless bloodshed. Yellowfang says that she can maybe plead with StarClan to stop Brokenstar. Nightpelt, leaving now, says that if they wanted him to stop, then maybe they would have intervened by now.
Later on, Volepaw is showing off to Nightpelt that his hip is less stiff now. Nightpelt says he's very proud of Volepaw. Volepaw asks if this is as good as it gets, muttering he's still useless and limping. Nightpelt says that he's wrong. He himself thought his life was over when Brokenstar cast him out, but now he's the leader of their outcast group. He adds that they all contribute, even those like Archeye and Hollyflower who are among the oldest but still find ways to add themselves into helping. Nightpelt says that this is how a Clan operates, taking care of one another. It's what Nightpelt himself has realized, and something Brokenstar doesn't understand.
Nightpelt then takes Volepaw out hunting, promising to teach him since Brokenstar didn't. Volepaw admits that Brokenstar didn't teach him a single thing about hunting, and that he emphasized fighting and battle training. Nightpelt asks how kits even learn to hunt in the first place then. Volepaw lowers his head and admits he and the other apprentices picked up small things from the warriors, and sometimes the more experienced warriors taught them things in secret, making Nightpelt wonder if there were more ShadowClan cats who disliked Brokenstar than he thought.
Nightpelt lowers his head in shame, but Volepaw insists to not think like that, because Brokenstar is a great leader. Nightpelt growls that Brokenstar spends more time conquering other Clans than managing his own and Brokenstar was willing to let Volepaw die. Volepaw hisses that Brokenstar needs to think of his Clan first, and he's doing that by gathering more territory and exiling the weak. Nightpelt realizes that Volepaw is too young to fully understand the atrocities Brokenstar is committing.
Nightpelt decides to continue with their hunting, and begins instructing Volepaw how to scent, track, and identify prey. Nightpelt explains that Volepaw needs to be lightfooted, to which Volepaw replies that it's like going for a quick and quiet kill, like how Brokenstar taught him. Nightpelt begrudgingly says yes, but before he can continue, they hear the yowl of a cat. Nightpelt says that they need to be wary, but Volepaw insists that if it's a trespasser, they'll teach them to not mess with ShadowClan warriors. Nightpelt is disheartened by this, wondering if it's purposeful ignorance or genuinely not understanding their situation of being outcasts. Regardless, the two head towards the yowl, and they find Brightflower.
Brightflower is crumpled against a tree, and upon noticing them, she croaks Nightpelt's name. She's too distraught to acknowledge Volepaw's existence right now. Nightpelt calmly asks her to explain what's happened, and Brightflower wails that Marigoldkit and Mintkit are dead. Nightpelt presses her for an answer, and she wails again that Yellowfang killed them. Nightpelt is shocked. He knows Yellowfang can be prickly sometimes, but he strongly doubts she'd kill kits; her own kin no less. Brightflower insists that Brokenstar discovered it himself, and falls to the ground, wailing that Yellowfang had been so unresponsive and mean lately. Nightpelt asks if anybody saw Yellowfang do it, but Brightflower insists it was obvious. Brightflower explains that Brokenstar exiled Yellowfang for it, but then he exiled her because she couldn't contribute any more to the Clan, and wanted to join Nightpelt's group of exiles.
Volepaw and Nightpelt lead her back, and Nightpelt announces he's going to visit ShadowClan's camp. As he arrives, there's a lone gray tabby guarding the entrance (not named), and only Runningnose in the camp. He explains to Nightpelt that Brokenstar is leading a final battle on WindClan to drive them out. Nightpelt demands to know why Runningnose let Yellowfang be exiled. Runningnose insists he didn't, but arguing or questioning Brokenstar isn't wise. Runningnose grimly says that he knows Yellowfang is innocent and wants to prove it, but he also knows that Yellowfang would want him to stay in ShadowClan and look after the wounded. Nightpelt begins to argue, but he's interupted by the returning battle patrol. Brokenstar, in the lead, is bragging about how easy it was to drive them all out, and he's flanked every single cat (barring Runningnose and that one guard), and all of them are bloodied and wounded. Nightpelt walks away solemnly.

Some time later, Nightpelt is wandering by himself on WindClan's moors. He finds it hard to acknowledge that a whole Clan was simply driven out of the forest, and how oddly empty WindClan's territory seemed now. He spots a rabbit over a hill, but it's being chased by Blackfoot and Clawface, who kill it with ease. Nightpelt greets them, and Clawface warmly welcomes him, asking if he's seeing all the prey they can get now. Clawface offers Nightpelt the rabbit, as it's very plump and he's sure the elders could use a good meal. Nightpelt stammers a thank you, and asks them if there's been considerations to let the elders back into camp. He adds that they have two territories of rich prey, so there's no need to continue apprenticing kits and things can go back to normal. Clawface and Blackfoot exchange a glance, and Clawface mutters that things can't be normal when RiverClan and ThunderClan still pose threats. Blackfoot adds that Brokenstar believes no cat can be trusted. Nightpelt asks what's the point considering there's more than enough prey to go around. Clawface says ShadowClan needs it, as they have the most cats. Blackfoot chims in that there's rumours of Yellowfang being sheltered at ThunderClan. Nightpelt asks if they genuinely believe Yellowfang killed kits. Blackfoot and Clawface agree they believe it.
Back at the exiles' camp, Nightpelt has a dream of constant fighting. In his dream, Brokenstar throws a cat off a ledge, breaking their neck, and snarls that ShadowClan must rule the forest. Nightpelt wakes up, and asks StarClan if it will ever end.

And here we have WC being officially driven out. At least we don't get to see Badgerfang's death here. :c Volepaw is still hurting, which is understandable. Brokenstar really thinks that teaching the young hunting moves is pointless, huh? The apprentices had to taught how to hunt in secret. Though Volepaw still thinks that Brokenstar is the greatest apparently. Then we have Brightflower still firmly believing that her own daughter killed her two youngest kits. Also, Brightflower was immediately exiled afterwards anyway. Nightpelt can't believe that Yellowfang would do this and Runningnose believes in her innocence.
