Simple and ordinary: two words used to describe Nia Myers. She was the typical boringly studious and socially inept girl of few words - she kept to herself, hated the spotlight and really loved to read, write, and draw, which was somewhat foreign to the sport-obsessed student body. Not to say that she completely lacked social skills, she just generally wasn't the kind of person up for socializing with her classmates, considering she knew nearly almost all of them from elementary school and had a mutually established disinterest in them. On top of that, she was far from the outspoken know-it-all type, she had a "quiet intelligence" as most of her teachers explained, acing every test and dismissing people who asked her for help. She took all the math and science AP's available to her, following the future medical engineering career path that her family wanted so badly for her. That wasn't the only way to be successful and Nia knew it, but the demanding pressure from her family, coupled with the futility of a Fine Arts major in this day and age (the only thing she really had any passion for, consequentially), made Nia begin to passively accept it.
Fortunately, being withdrawn from her classmates meant that most of them never really asked her for help. It wasn't that she was unapproachable, she just, quite frankly, was not a very good teacher. It was partially that, and the fact that she didn't enjoy teaching in general. Despite that, she still found herself getting approached by Elle Morgan, star of the lacrosse team and her bully since elementary school, for a deal - money and a truce in exchange for help in English class. As if that was jarring enough.
That alone terrified Nia, who had kind of just accepted in the heat of the moment. Now, here she was, running late to their meet up in the library. She could only hope that this wasn't some stupid ploy, considering that Elle was the one who suggested meeting up in the library after school. Nia couldn't even name a time they'd actually directly spoken to each other in high school, one on one, despite being in the same English class. Nia exhaled softly and tousled her long chocolate brown hair a couple times before stepping inside the library. She eventually found her way to the back, where she saw Elle pacing around a desk with two chairs. After adjusting her black rimmed glasses nervously, she came around and set her bag aside. Don't make this weird. Don't be awkward. Casual, casual. "Hi. Um." Well, there was absolutely no need for that last "um", but Nia tried to roll with it anyway. "Sorry I'm late," she apologized, giving a nervous smile as she sat down. She pulled down her dark gray sweater and began digging through her bag for her English binder, trying to bear through the unnerving silence. If this was anyone else, literally anyone else, maybe Nia would have attempted to make small talk, but she didn't want to worsen the underlying tension between them - okay, maybe that was just Nia who felt that, but she just could not act stupid in front of Elle Morgan.

{ elle morgan } // { the library }
Elle's own thoughts were consumed with her want to be anywhere else. Knowledge had never been on the forefront of her brain. It was always sports, friends, and family. Probably in that order, considering how her life was spent. It wasn't to say Elle wasn't smart, she got a consistent and steady stream of Bs and Cs, relying on her sports scholarship to put her through college. After that, she had no idea what she'd do. But English was her worst subject. She was pretty good at science and math, getting her only occasional A in those subjects. She didn't quite understand the point of English, just say what you meant! Why did it have to be perfectly structured, because who honestly gave a crap about what kind of thing? "Apparently English teachers. And Nia." Her eyes immediately snapped around to the smaller, darker haired girl, who was rushing forward, late for their meeting.
If Elle was being honest, which most of the time, she wasn't (at least not with herself), she was a bit struck by how pretty Nia actually was. Elle liked the glasses and how they framed her face, the spilled of tousled hair, and the dark gray sweater. She shook off the thought and pushed her hair back from her face and sat down across from Nia. "Ah, hey," She tried to keep it casual, like she was sitting with an old friend. Except, Nia wasn't an old friend, or a friend at all, and Elle had no idea how to negotiate how to talk to her. The tension wrapped thick around them, although Elle credited that to the musty smell of the library and the underlying nerves of being surrounded by books that could topple over and kill them both at any minute. "It's fine, I'm just glad you're helping me." Elle offered with a slight smile and flipped open her binder. Elle had felt desperate, flustered, and panicked when she'd asked Nia. She couldn't have told her parents that she might not be able to play because of her failed class, and no way her 'friends' would help her. They barely passed themselves.
"I'm surprised I'm not the one late." She flipped all her hair over her shoulder and shivered, wishing she'd worn a sweater like Nia. "I guess she's used to being in the cold library." She thought and sighed. "I'm usually the last one to everything. Somehow I move slow everywhere except the field." Elle was trying to make Nia laugh, or smile or something to help ease the tension between them, to crack the ice forming around them, not just from the frigid library. She smiled, showing her straight white teeth and chuckled at herself. Maybe Nia wouldn't like her humor, or maybe she would humor her. Hah, if Nia didn't laugh, Elle could crack herself up enough for the two of them.
{ nolan fairchild } // { silverlake } The constant sashay of the waves rolling up and down the worn smooth pebbles of the Silverlake shore was a constant sense of peace and comfort despite the roaring chaos of family that surrounded Nolan Fairchild almost 100 percent of the time. The town on which the silvery teal lake had been built around housed most of the eastern European generations that his mother had grown up surrounded by. It had been years since Nole had sat on the rough stones on a thick quilt and stared out over the quiet, early morning and just took in the cool hum. Usually it was loud in Silverlake once all of his siblings and cousins were awake and rowdy, but right now, it felt like the lake was just breathing low and soft, like the world was still asleep.
The old lake house was originally owned by his grandparents, bought by his great-grandfather as a 10th wedding gift for his daughter and her husband since he'd brought the family good money and reputation and children. It was there safe haven. It was passed down to the oldest child to own and keep up, but really anyone with Kosevic roots could find haven in the two story lakefront home. His mother had left home when she was eighteen and met his father, but she came back every summer with her children to have three months of 'family time' and "learning of family history and the roots of the family" before the fall sent them all back to school and work, both Nina and Sebastian being school teachers while the six Fairchild children grew up.
Ever since moving to L.A. after college, Nole had managed to not return to the east coast to go on the annual trip and see all of his aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Yet the big city had such an artificial and perfumed and gilded feel to it, especially now that the quiet lapping of the waves was slowly pulling out the pain and anger he felt at the city, at it's perfectly fake people within it, and at the traffic that constantly gave him a migraine. Boys of all colors and shapes and sizes and looks swept in like whirlwinds and only left him with whiplash, and he just wanted to get away. But with the constant questions about his life from his mother and aunts and grandmother, the questions about his job from his brother and uncles, and the questions about his love life from his sisters and cousins made him regret the decision already.
Nole tilted his head back to gaze up at the sky with his hazel green eyes and watched as the sun turned the cool tones of the night sky into the warm petal pinks of dawn and he took a deep breath. The pines swayed in the wind, the ripples of the lake growing stronger and a chill cutting through his sweatshirt and black boxers. He hadn't bothered with any shorts, although he was off of the property and onto the land where anyone could wander. He couldn't even see the house from his spot on the pebbles and the dock was just a dot on the other edge of the silvery lake. His fingers ran through his dark hair and he leaned back to look up at the sky and the fading stars and sinking moon above him. The last the thing he expected was anyone to find him on the shore, even though he shouldn't be surprised that other people came to the lake early in the morning for peace and serenity.

If she were to be honest, Nia wasn't at all anticipating Elle to respond so openly. She ended up growing a little flustered once she caught a glimpse of the other's seemingly genuine smile - what was meant to be a reassuring gesture only ended up further unsettling her. Not in like, a bad way, but, it was just... it wasn't what she was expecting? Still struggling to regain her composure, she was having trouble finding words to form an actual sentence. "Oh, no problem - it's no problem," she said quickly, adding an unnecessary chuckle at the end. She found it hard to maintain eye contact with Elle, somewhat intimidated by her confident and intense gaze, so her blue-gray eyes would occasionally dart between the desk and the bookshelves. It's only weird if you make it weird, she told herself. Elle was only trying to be nice after all, there was no reason to act all shy. Nia exhaled softly and opened up her binder after Elle, flipping through her recent class notes.
Nia glanced back up at Elle through her glasses when she started talking again, trying not to stare as she flipped her hair back. Her wavy reddish caramel locks seemed to perfectly compliment her every feature, and that was her natural hair. So, maybe Nia was a little jealous. Her own hair was smoothed and easy to manage, but it was just so boring, a single shaded dark brown with small waves. Even her eyes were boring, the gray dulling out the vibrancy of the blue. Eventually, she broke out of her daze (and realized that she had, in fact, been staring) when she noticed that Elle was trying to humor her. After mentally straightening herself out, she gave a small smile in response. "Yeah? I guess we traded places, I'm usually, like, awkwardly early." Not to say that she kind of purposely stalled their little meet up, but that was beside the point.
Seeing Elle's pretty smile put Nia somewhat at ease, and she felt obliged to return it, though only showing a little bit of her teeth this time. "So," Nia began, having pretty much no clue on how to properly start their session. "Did you finish Act 4 yet? We could finish play together, if you want, or I could help you get started on your essay," she offered, getting out a copy of Othello and an empty essay outline. While she was absentmindedly organizing herself, only then had she actually noticed that Elle was shivering. Nia silently freaked out, knowing that it'd be rude to pretend not to notice. "Oh, um, do you need a jacket?" she asked, not really mindful of the fact that she was way smaller than Elle. "It does get kind of cold in here during the winter - I mean, we could sit in the hallway instead, or something."
