We all thought Graystripe was going to die but there's only 2 chapters left, right?
So, either something big is about to go down, or he (unfortunately, poor boy) lives to see another day Yeah there's Chapter 30 (which I'll be posting in a bit), Chapter 31, then the epilogue and then the manga.

I'm honestly shocked that nothing has happened to Greystripe yet. There should only be a couple more chapters left, right?
Guess it seems like he'll be alive for the next book then, unless something extremely sudden happens lol.

Hollyfall - Thank you for the summaries, this is great! Iโm really liking this book so far (and since thereโs only a couple of chapters left Iโm sure it will continue to be good), and this might actually be making me change my opinion on Graystripe! Also WarriorClan is the best.

i really hope graystripe visits barley once more before he returns to thunderclan. imagine barley dying beforehand and it's bittersweet because graystripe thinks he will get to be with ravenpaw again! graystripe not dying right now isn't a big deal to me but he better die BEFORE the arc concludes... i'm confident he is going to die before then. it would be messed up if he was given the millie/leafpool treatment.

Chapter 30: Then
Graystripe is watching ThunderClan, and life is returning to normal. Dustpelt is drilling Sorrelpaw, Rainpaw, and Sootpaw about the warrior code. Brambleclaw comes back from the dawn patrol, and reports nothing unusual, but Graystripe notes that Brambleclaw clearly respected him Graystripe thinks to himself that he's doubted himself and his competence as leader so many times, but clearly from the way Brambleclaw just spoke to him, he must be doing a good job, and the Clan has accepted him as their temporary leader. He thinks to himself that it would take many moons to convince himself that all the dangerous cats are gone, but knows that since they drove BloodClan out, he's feeling much more confident in his leadership abilities. He mentions that just a few days ago, he'd led all four Clans in a battle to force out some foxes who had made their den at Fourtrees.
He sees movement at the entrance tunnel, and Ashfur rushes in. Graystripe tells him to explain himself, and Ashfur announces that he's seen Firestar. All the cats overhear this, and a few moments later, Firestar and Sandstorm appear, and the Clan yowls their greetings. Graystripe is relieved to see him and to give back the responsibility of being leader. The Clan is excitedly asking Firestar and Sandstorm where they've been. Firestar tells them to settle down, as they've been travelling a long way, and they're tired. Graystripe greets them, and Firestar asks how things have been while he was away, adding that he hopes there wasn't trouble. Brambleclaw begins to tell Firestar of the recent events, but Graystripe tells him that's enough. He tells Firestar that they had some problems, but it was nothing they couldn't handle, as Firestar left behind a strong, capable Clan. Firestar says he's glad he doesn't need to worry about the Clan when Graystripe's in charge, and he says that he and Sandstorm are going to rest. The Clan understands and goes back to their duties, but Brambleclaw asks Graystripe why he didn't want them to know. Graystripe says that Firestar is exhausted, and the issues with BloodClan and the foxes are probably not the things he wants to hear at the moment.
Later that day, Graysripe is eating a mouse when Sorrelpaw comes bounding up to him, saying that Firestar wants to see him in his den. Sorrelpaw is cheery, and when pressed, she explains that she's happy Sandstorm is home. More seriously, she tells Graystripe that Dustpelt is a terrific cat, and she's glad to have learned from two great mentors before running off to her brothers. As Graystripe goes to Firestar's den, Firestar remarks that it's good to be home. He says that it's good to not return in the middle of a crisis, but suspects something is wrong, and asks Graystripe about it. Graystripe explains the issues with BloodClan and the foxes. Firestar is impressed, and asks how he did it. Graystripe explains he had to be clever, and explains what had happened between making the deal with Gremlin, the information Gremlin gave, and how she left to become a kittypet. Firestar says that he clearly managed well, and it sounds like Graystripe's leadership has been a success, and he obviously right the made choice with him as deputy. Graystripe is embarrassed, and Firestar says he'll make a fine leader if anything happens to him. Graystripe explains that if anything, the experience has taught him that he doesn't want the position of Clan leader. Firestar doesn't believe him at first, but Graystripe says that it's not that he doesn't respect the position, or that he doesn't love his Clan. He just feels more comfortable supporting Firestar than being the one to make the decisions. He'll always be loyal to ThunderClan, and he'll never leave it, and maybe he'll feel differently one day. Firestar asks him what changed his mind, and Graystripe says that he sees how ThunderClan respects him, and he believes Firestar was born to become leader, and doing Firestar's job for a few moons has made him realize how hard a job it is. Maybe if he has more time to learn from him, he'll feel more prepared in the future, adding that he'll understand if Firestar wants to choose another deputy.
Firestar denies wanting another deputy, but he hopes one day that Graystripe will change his mind, noting that he has plenty of time since he's a young leader with plenty of lives. He adds that perhaps there is no better adviser than a cat who has no interest in leadership. He asks Graystripe to promise him to be honest with him always, and to think of the good of the Clan before anything else. Graystripe responds that of course he does, and Firestar is content. Firestar muses that there will be more danger for ThunderClan to face in the future. The forest and world is big and filled with many possible dangers, making Graystripe wonder what exactly he saw out there. He and Firestar finished their conversation, and Graystripe thinks to himself that although he didn't feel like a true leader, he'd kept the Clan he loved together. If there's one thing being temporary leader has taught him, it's that he loves ThunderClan more than anything, and ThunderClan is his home.

The battle with the foxes? That's a story from Battles of the Clans, which was also in Graystripe's POV. I'm glad to see it gets a mention here and isn't forgotten about. I'm also glad to see Sorrelpaw in such a cheery mood. I've always liked her.

Chapter 31: Now
Graystripe enters the barn, and calls for Barley's name. Barley was asleep, and as he stirs, he asks if that's Ravenpaw. Graystripe's heart lurches with compassion, knowing what Barley was dreaming about, and misses Ravenpaw again. Graystripe replies that it's him, and Barley gets excited to see him. Barley asks about Fang, and Graystripe explains that Fang stayed with the rescued cats on RiverClan territory. He and Barley catch some mice, and Graystripe is explaining all that had occured to him. Going between the elderly twoleg, and how Graystripe helped all the cats escape. When he's finished, Barley replies that he's guessing he's going to have lots of young cats visiting him soon. Graystripe mentions that their goal wouldn't have been completed without Monkeystar and WarriorClan, and Barley admits he'd miss their chatter if they stopped visiting. Graystripe also tells him that Monkeystar told the cats who didn't like Clan life or didn't know where to go, to head on over to Barley's farm. Barley says he'd love the company. Barley then asks if Graystripe is heading home tomorrow, and Graystripe says he is. If the journey has taught him anything, it's that his place is in ThunderClan.
Barley: "Then this is the last time we'll see each other. I'm not ungrateful, you know. I never imagined I would see you, or any Clan cat, again. I started to think about the end of my life once I realized I could never do all the things I once did. Everything seemed pretty bleak after I lost Ravenpaw." Graystripe: "I felt the same when Millie died." Barley: "And we were wrong. Because you turned up here, Graystripe, and that taught me that there's still the chance of wonderful surprises. Even for cats as ancient as we are, there's still something to look forward to." Graystripe: "You're right, Barley. And from now on, I'm going to keep looking forward with every single heartbeat."
Sometime later, Graystripe is climbing up the mountain and when he reaches the top, he stands, exhausted, staring at the tribe's waterfall. Stormfur sees him, and calls him over. Graystripe, surprised, asks if he knew he was coming. Stormfur explains that one of their hunting patrols spotted him, and it's great to see him again. Stormfur invites him into the cave, and asks to hear about his adventures. Graystripe remarks that he'd like some prey first, as he's been travelling for a while. Stormfur gets him an eagle, and admits he was really worried about him. Graystripe knows that Stormfur had asked him to stay in the Tribe, but knows he can't do that. Graystripe apologizes, and says he's going back to ThunderClan. Stormfur asks if he made contact with StarClan. Graystripe feels regret, but says he wasn't able to. He says he's realized he doesn't need StarClan to tell him that his place is back in the Clan he loves. Stormfur asks what changed, reminding him that he thought part of the problem was that he didn't feel like he belonged in ThunderClan, and it wasn't the same Clan he grew up with.
Graystripe responds with: "Yes, but now I realize I need to move on too. Because my love for ThunderClan wasn't just my love for one particular leader, or the warriors I fought and hunted alongside then. It was for everything ThunderClan is, and has ever been, and ever will be. For good or ill, as long as I have wisdom to share, that's where I belong"
Stormfur lets out an annoyed snort, and asks if ThunderClan's even noticed he's gone. Graystripe can't believe the hostile tone coming from Stormfur. Stormfur realizes this and explains that it's because Clan cats are unfeeling, not because Graystripe is unimportant. Graystripe says that he may be an elder, but he has a lot to offer like wisdom and respect. Stormfur suggests staying in the tribe, as Graystripe's kin could use his guidance. Graystripe says he would love that, but he and Stormfur have kin in ThunderClan too, and he has a duty to them. He's given so much to his Clan, and they've given so much to him. Stormfur says he can't expect them to keep giving forever, and Graystripe agrees that they maybe can't, but he wants to give something. He says that when Stoneteller told him of his part to play, he thought he was going to be the hero. That he could go to the Moonstone and bring back StarClan and they would all have a clear answer on what to do next. He explains how lightning destroyed the Moonstone, and he was devastated for while, but then he realized he was still trying to be a good cat even without the guidance of StarClan. Stormfur, baffled, asks Graystripe if he's okay with StarClan being gone. Graystripe says he isn't. It hurts terribly, he misses his kin, his friends, but he knows that if they don't come back, his life hasn't ended. He says that ThunderClan may be struggling, but they can still be a Clan, working and helping each other.
Stormfur gets angry, and says he'll never understand why Clan cats choose fighting and battles over a quiet life with family. Graystripe reminds Stormfur that he too was once a Clan cat, and adds that he could always come with him back to ThunderClan. Stormfur actually considers this for a moment, but says that he, Brook, and their kits could never leave the mountains, and he's too old for change. Graystripe agrees that he too, is too old for change. Stormfur begins to understand, and says that while he isn't happy about it, if Graystripe really has a part to play, then he must go back, as Stoneteller is never wrong. Graystripe feels comforted that Stormfur seems to understand now. Graystripe considers asking Stormfur to visit him as often as he can in the time that remains in Graystripe's life, but something stopped him, and he never asked. Stormfur asks Graystripe about his adventures, and Graystripe tells him about Barley, WarriorClan, and the cats in the twoleg den. Thinking of Fang makes him tell Stormfur about Gremlin and BloodClan years ago. Stormfur is surprised, and says RiverClan never heard about it. Now Graystripe knows why he didn't ask Stormfur to visit him. He knows this evening was perfect, and it would be his last, happy memory with his son, and he hopes Stormfur would be happy with it too.
Days after leaving the mountains, Graystripe is trudging up a steep grassy slope. Exhausted, Graystripe reminds himself that he's and elder and shouldn't be going on quests at his age. As he reaches the top, the land gives away to a view that shows the lake glittering in the sunlight. He feels like one enormous leap could take him right across the water and into ThunderClan's forest.
Happiness and relief surges over him. He thinks to himself: "I'm home. For better or worse...I'm here to help the Clan I love."

Naw, Barley. I'll miss him. I always will. Hopefully he'll be reunited with Ravenpaw soon. But I truly am glad we got to see him again. I'm also glad that Graystripe went to see Stormfur one last time before returning home. I understand that Stormfur wanted his father to stay with him, but it was never gonna happen. I'm glad he was able to understand this in the end.

Epilogue: Then
Graystripe and Firestar are leading ThunderClan to a gathering. They're the last to arrive. When Firestar enters Fourtrees, Leopardstar, Tallstar, and Blackstar are surprised to see them, and Firestar mutters if they've ever seen a cat before. Graystripe is glad that the cats who suspected Firestar returned to his kittypet life were wrong. Tallstar is the first to greet him as Firestar joins them on the oaks, and asks if he's well. Although Tallstar is sincere, Leopardstar sarcastically says that they were all so worried about him. Blackstar remarks that they thought they would never see him again. Firestar says that he's here now, and he never expected to take so long to recover from a bought of greencough, but he's well now. Graystripe notes that he certainly looks it. Blackstar and Leopardstar exchange a glance, but say nothing. Blackstar says the gathering shall begin, but tells Firestar that he should speak first, and Graystripe knows that Blackstar suspects there may be more to Firestar's absence. Firestar suspects it too, and says he was too ill to carry out his duties, but he had an excellent deputy who took the responsibility on his shoulders. Firestar explains the issues with BloodClan, Fury, and how they thought if their leader was out of action, ThunderClan would be easy to destroy.
Sootpaw speaks up, yowling "No way, Firestar!" But immediately slaps his tail over his mouth. Firestar purrs and says "No way indeed". He says because ThunderClan has a brave, quick-witted, and competent deputy, Graystripe showed BloodClan what a mistake they were making. Graystripe whispers to Sandstorm that Firestar doesn't need to make a big deal about it, as any cat would have done what he had done. Sandstorm mews that "any cat" didn't, and nuzzles his shoulder, saying Graystripe did it all. ThunderClan cheers Graystripe's name. Firestar goes on, saying that if not for Graystripe, BloodClan would have destroyed ThunderClan. And if they had done that, they would have gone after the other three Clans. He says that they all owe it to to Graystripe, and Graystripe's leadership. Tallstar nods approval, but Leopardstar and Blackstar look like they've bitten into a piece of crow-food. Graystripe thinks to himself that they won't argue with Firestar because it's true, but knows that it wasn't him, it was ThunderClan. He thinks that if he made the wrong decisions, ThunderClan would be destroyed, and his belly cramps as he knows how close he came to losing the Clan. The cats cheer Graystripe and ThunderClan, and Graystripe murmurs to Sandstorm that he doesn't deserve the praise. Sandstorm tells him that of course he does. And if it's any comfort, it won't last since the next time prey crosses the border, they'll be fighting again, and to enjoy the peace while it lasts and shut up and enjoy it.
But Graystripe thinks that he doesn't enjoy it. He doesn't want to be the center of attention, partially one of the reasons why he doesn't want to be leader. He's happy being Firestar's deputy and a loyal cat of ThunderClan. He thinks that for the rest of his life, until he travels to StarClan, he'll do his best to protect his Clan.
