Chapter 27: Then
Ashfur calls out that they need to keep fighting, and need to drive BloodClan out. Graystripe lets Snake out from under him, and tells Fury that there's no way BloodClan can win the fight. If she continues, she's condemning her Clanmates to death. He asks if she cares about their safety, and if she has any sympathy for the cats who have suffered for her. Fury replies that she's doing her best for their safety by taking ThunderClan territory. Graystripe asks what good the territory is if most of her clanmates died taking it. Fury snarls that it'll be worth it to make sure she survives, and she'll keep fighting until she has no cats to back her up.
Graystripe ponders how he can even reason with a cat like her, and why cats even follow her. However, Graystripe spots blood oozing from a wound on her side. Cinderpelt is behind Fury, and silently and subtlely tells him that the wound is as dangerous as suspected. Graystripe is happy to know she's injured, and remarks that she has a bad wound on her side. Fury appears to have not even noticed it. Graystripe goes on, saying it's a serious wound. Fury snarls that it will heal. Graystripe says that it will get infected. Cinderpelt adds in that as the medicine cat, she knows what she's talking about. She says that if the wound gets infected, then the pain will be worse than it is now, and she could die from it. Graystripe offers to let Cinderpelt treat it.
Fury actually seems to think about the offer, but she then says that he's just trying to scare her, and she begins to say that a "small scratch" won't stop her, but then she suddenly convulses in pain. Cinderpelt gives Graystripe a look, silently asking him if she should help Fury. Graystripe isn't sure what to do. He knows that if Fury were to die, then all would be said and done. He says Fury can say anything she wants, but it won't change that she's going to die soon. He says ThunderClan is willing to help her, but she must swear that BloodClan will leave them alone for good. Fury snarls that she'll never do that, and she begins to insult them, but she has another convulsion of pain. Fury realizes that BloodClan is no longer united under her, having heard her speech about them earlier, and she collapses from the Highrock to the ground.
Cinderpelt steps forward, but Graystripe says that Fury has to ask for their help, and has to promise in front of all the cats in the camp to take BloodClan far away and to never return. Fury calls Graystripe a flea-ridden excuse for a cat, but promises him.
Later that day, ThunderClan's been mostly treated for their wounds. BloodClan has deserted Fury after she agreed to Graystripe's demands. He isn't sure they're be gone for good, but he knows that without a leader they were no longer an organized fighting force. Graystripe comes to the medicine den and asks how Fury is doing. Fury responds that she's fine, and they can kick her out now. Graystripe responds that they don't kick out cats, and redirects the question to Cinderpelt. Cinderpelt says she is, and tells Fury to come back and see her if the wound gets worse. Fury gets up to leave, thanking Cinderpelt, and as she heads out, Graystripe reminds her that she isn't to come back. Fury grumbles that she doesn't plan on it, and will probably leave the forest. As she leaves, Graystripe feels relief and begins organizing the Clan to recover, sending out patrols and making sure the camp is cleaned up. As Graystripe heads towards the warriors den, he notices that the warriors are staring at him. He figures they're about to tell him off, but instead, Mousefur tells him that he did a good job. Thornclaw admits he had them worried for a while, but he says that Graystripe made the right call. Dustpelt says that if Fury comes back, they'll be ready. Brackenfur apologizes to Graystripe for not trusting him. Ashfur scuffles his paws and mutters "I guess that goes for me too". Graystripe knows it's not an apology, but he knows it's the best he's going to get. Speckletail says that he's proven himself to be a worthy deputy, and in a day that is hopefully far off, she knows he will be a good leader and ThunderClan will be safe with him. Graystripe is embarrassed by the praise, but thinks to himself that although he devised the battle plan, he should have foreseen that the apprentices would join the battle, and if they died, it would be on him. He knows it was just one incident, but as leader, he would have to make these kinds of decisions all the time, and knows he doesn't want that kind of responsibility.
The next morning, the camp seems to have returned to normal. Shrewkit and Spiderkit are reenacting the battle, while Whitekit, who just opened her eyes, is watching them. Graystripe and Cinderpelt are discussing the prophecy StarClan gave them earlier. Graystripe concludes it must have been about the cat Snake. After they discuss the vagueness of prophecies, they conclude that Graystripe was being warned not about Snake's bite, but rather, biting Snake. Cinderpelt says that if Graystripe killed Snake, then Gremlin would have died. Graystripe is uneasy, knowing how close to killing Snake he was.
They go to check on Gremlin, and she thanks Graystripe for upholding his promise. However, she admits that now that Scraps had died, everything seemed different. She says that the Clans seem to fight all the time, and although she says ThunderClan is safer than BloodClan, she isn't sure how safe it can be for her kits. She says she is going to try her luck at twolegplace. Graystripe and Cinderpelt are taken back, and Gremlin says she's sorry to give up her freedom, but she'll welcome the safety and security that comes with being with twolegs. Cinderpelt reminds her that her kits will be taken away. Gremlin acknowledges it, but she knows the kits will at least be looked after. She adds that she doesn't want to cross paths with Fury again, knowing that she'll target both her and her kits. Graystripe says he is sorry to lose her, and Cinderpelt is worried for Gremlin's kits. Gremlin begins to head off, but thanks Graystripe, Cinderpelt, and ThunderClan for helping her. She says that she'll remember everything they did for her. As she leaves, Graystripe sees that Dustpelt and Brackenfur watching her curiously, and he thinks he sees some regret in their eyes. At the camp's entrance tunnel Gremlin turns around and faces Graystripe. She apologizes for leaving, but she thinks it's best. Graystripe says "ThunderClan will always be in your debt. I wish you and your kits the long, happy life you deserve. And if you ever need help with anything, please come back. I promise, all you have to do is ask."

@rockfoot After you’re done with the summaries, could you post pictures of the whole book somewhere? (If anyone replies to this please don’t give me spoilers, I’m trying really hard to avoid them , I haven’t read any of the summaries and I can’t see the replies above either, but I really want to read the book so I’m risking getting spoiled to write here)

So did the Erin’s forget about Longtail being blinded by a rabbit before Firestar left, because from what you have said he seems fine? (Also I’ve only just signed up so I’m sorry if I should put a spoiler tag but haven’t, I don’t know how to do that yet)

My guess is that Longtail wanted to help and didnt want to be useless, so Graystripe put him somewhere that wouldnt see too much open conflict. To use the spoiler tag, just put [.spoiler] and [/.spoiler] around whatever text you want to hide (without the periods)

Chapter 28: Now
Graystripe roams the den. He feels sick being forced to breathe the putrid air, and he's feeling hungry. The twoleg had brought some more food, but Graystripe can't bring himself to eat when he sees how sick the other cats are. He goes to Daffodil and Petunia, and asks how Daffodil is. Daffodil says she's fine, but Graystripe can tell she's lying. Graystripe tells them Fang, or Honeysuckle, is outside to help rescue them. This lifts Daffodil's spirits up, but Petunia doesn't look hopeful. Petunia suggests Daffodil sleeps, and Daffodil obliges. Daffodil also has "vibrant blue eyes". Graystripe begins to wander around the den. Looking out the window, he doesn't see Fang. He worries if Fang has abandoned them, but he pushes the thought away. He then spots one of the floorboards slightly looser than the others. As he prys it open, he realizes that with enough force, it could be broken and the cats could escape. He hisses to himself that he would have thought cats would have had the basic decency to help him, and Lily appears beside him. She tells him to watch it, and asks him if he thinks they haven't tried the floorboards before.
Graystripe notices claw marks around the floorboard's edges, and realizes she's right. Graystripe is in disbelief that they have no way out. He prays to StarClan for help, and wishes Firestar was around to help him. He thinks that he was a warrior, deputy, and even a clan leader for a while, and asks if being trapped in a twoleg nest is really how he's going to die. Then, he hears Fang's voice. Graystripe rushes to the window and he sees that Fang has come back, but not alone. Fang has gotten WarriorClan to help. Graystripe tells him of the loose floorboards, but Fang replies he knows about it, and all attempts have failed. Graystripe insists it's worth a try, and Fang reluctantly agrees. Fang and WarriorClan push from underneath (the nest is raised from the ground, so they can get underneath it). He hears WarriorClan's enthusiastic mews about helping cats.
The other cats in the den see Graystripe trying to pry open the floorboard, and they begin to realize that they might actually have a way out. Graystripe instructs them to help him with the floorboard. Daffodil, hearing this, gets up and asks for Honeysuckle. Fang replies he's here. The board isn't moving as much anymore, and Graystripe begins to lose hope. But Lily tells him that they will escape, and Graystripe's a bit heartwarmed that these cats have put in their efforts to help each other, just like a Clan does. With all the cats helping, they break the board and Graystripe peers down to see Fang and the WarriorClan cats staring up at him. Monkeystar squeals they did it. Graystripe agrees, and says to let the trapped cats escape. As the trapped cats begin to leave, Graystripe orders Lily to go find the other cats. Petunia appears with a she-cat and three kits, lowering them down to WarriorClan. Graystripe helps Daffodil down, and she and Fang have are reunited. Lily comes back with some cats, and replies that it's all of them. As she leaves, Graystripe says Petunia can leave now. Petunua replies that she said she's not going, and she wants to stay with her twoleg.
Graystripe argues that she can't mean that, and he knows that if something happened to Petunia here, he would blame himself. He says that life is much better on the outside. Petunia says that she meant every word about staying with her twoleg. She says that she doesn't keep cats to torture them. She keeps them because she loves them and cats are her "only friends". Graystripe wishes she would leave, but decides not to press her. He says goodbye to her, and hops down the hole. As Graystripe heads outside, he sees WarriorClan and the escaped kittypets hanging out in the garden. He wonders now that since they're out, where they would even go. Graystripe pads over to Fang and says it was a great idea to fetch WarriorClan. However, a sudden shrilling sound breaks off their conversation. A male twoleg appears, and the sound is coming from his pursed lips. He goes to the den, aware of the stench, and pulls open a narrow slat in the door and pushes in some "white leaves". He then goes to a window and stares in for a long time. He then leaves, pulling out a small twoleg object and clapping it to his ear, and runs down the thunderpath.
Once the twoleg leaves, Graystripe tells the cats that the first thing they need to do is get out of the twoleg garden. Then they will hunt, feed, and rest, and then decide what to do. An elderly black tom replies that he doesn't like out outside, and asks what will happen if it rains. Graystripe sarcastically thinks "We'll get wet", but doesn't say it. An older tabby she cat replies that they actually don't know how to hunt, and suggests going back inside since they survived for so long. Fang hisses that some of them didn't survive, his mother for one. The elderly black tom apologizes. Graystripe says that they can do what they want, but he believes that a cat's place is out in the wild, with fresh air, and soft grass beneath your paws. The tabby she-cat admits it sounds better than the twoleg nest. Daffodil says that she wouldn't be sick if she wasn't living in the den. The cats seem to agree silently that they are going to stay out in the wild. Lily asks what they're going to do next. They decide to hunt and gather their strength.
As they hunt, two twolegs in black-and-white pelts come to the den. He realizes they look just like the twolegs who took him to become a kittypet years ago. The elderly black tom, Sunflower, replies that they're from the cutter, and take cats. Graystripe urges that they all need to leave now before they're spotted. Sunflower stops him, and says that if he distracts the, the other cats can have have a chance to seek freedom. Lily replies that they escaped together, and they'll be leaving together. The tabby she-cat says that Sunflower is right, as they old cats aren't going to be a burden to the younger ones. She adds that they don't have much time left anyways, and want to do a good deed for them. Graystripe realizes how old he is, and thanks them. Daffodil comes in, and says she can't go with them either. She tells Fang that she's had weak legs her whole life, and her sickness has gotten worse. Fang is shocked and says he believes she can make it. Daffodil says she doesn't want to hold them back, and Fang says he's willing to risk that for her. He says he'll stay with her. Daffodil tells him no, and she refuses to let him do that. She says that if they're both captured, the twolegs won't keep them together. Fang tries to suggest twolegs will understand how much they love each other, but Daffodil says that twolegs don't think the way they do, and that Fang has to teach the other cats how to survive. Fang says that if it's what Daffodil wants, then he'll accept her choice, and he won't forget her.
Then, another twoleg monster arrives. Lily explains they're "medicine twolegs". The twolegs from that monster are helping the elderly twoleg out of her den. Petunia is following them. The twolegs help the elderly twoleg into the monster, and Petunia is wailing loudly, trying to get inside the monster. One of the twolegs gently brushes her aside and closes up the monster, and it drives away and Petunia is left there caterwauling. Graystripe goes to Petunia. Petunia wails that the twolegs have taken her away, and her twoleg needs her, and she needs her twoleg. Graystripe to assure her that the twoleg is ill, and the twolegs will make her better. Petunia is unconvinced, and Graystripe suggests coming with them. Petunia is outraged at the suggestion again, and says she'll be staying until her twoleg comes back. Graystripe hears the first twolegs coming back, and knows they only have a few moments before they're spotted. He notes that although Petunia is old, she's strong enough to make a new, free life for herself. He explains that the twolegs in the den will take her and give her to new twolegs if she's caught. He suggests that for the time being, Petunia stays with the escaped cats, and she can check on the den to see when her twoleg comes back.
Petunia agrees, and she runs back with Graystripe to the group. Sunflower (the black tom), the tabby she-cat, and Daffodil go to distract the twolegs, and Fang stares at them with misery in his eyes. As they leave, Monkeystar exclaims that this is great, and it feels like they first time they've been a Clan. Fireface agrees, excited that they've escaped from the "bad twoleg". Graystripe is happy to see that WarriorClan came to help. Fang tells WarriorClan that not all twolegs are bad, as those ones come to help cats in need. Graystripe adds in that twolegs just don't understand. After some travelling, they decide to rest for the night. Monkeystar and Clawwhistle offer to keep watch. Graystripe agrees, and orders everyone to go to sleep. Fang admits to Graystripe that when Gremlin died, Daffodil was the only cat who made living bearable, and he isn't sure how he can cope and live now. Graystripe wonders if he should tell Fang that life is long, and he'll likely fall in love again. But Graystripe knows from bitter experience that the pain will never heal, and he'll always have the pain forever. Graystripe is thinking of Millie, and thinks that he misses Millie so much. Graystripe settles down beside Fang to comfort him for the night.

I'm really glad this book dispels the notion that Graystripe was too obsessed with Silverstream and that he only cared about his kits if they reminded him of Silverstream. He clearly takes any loss really hard, and missed anyone he cared about who he's lost. He's an immensely caring and compassionate character.

Tbh throughout the book it's very apparent that he loves and misses them both. There's a bit more of a focus on Millie but I think that's because she died recently and Graystripe is still finding it hard to live without her. He loves all his kits and he misses them all. He really reminisces a lot about the cats he's lost and it's obvious how much he misses and loved them.

I also feel bad for Petunia. She was loyal to her Twoleg till the end. But at least her Twoleg will now get the help that she needs.

Chapter 29: Now
Graystripe wakes up, and he sees that Fang is stirring, and he's still grieving for Daffodil. He tells Fang to not be so sad, since Daffodil made a heroic decision to do what she did. She sacrificed her life so the other cats could have freedom. Fang murmurs that he knows it's true, and he keeps thinking of the life he and her planned for so long. When they escaped, they planned on having kits and living a long, happy life together. Fang is crestfallen that the dream he's had for so many seasons is gone now. He doesn't know what he's going to do now. Graystripe says "Take it from me: A cat will experience many, many heartbreaks in their lifetime. Heartbreaks and setbacks are like enemies, attacking you out of nowhere. Even when you're strong enough to fight them, the important thing is not to let them follow you. And the way to do that is to keep moving forward, so that you're constantly putting the enemies of grief and loss behind you." Fang says he doesn't plan on forgetting Daffodil. Graystripe says he understands that and isn't asking him to forget his memories with Daffodil, but moving forward will help him find comfort. Fang says it's just hard to do so. Monkeystar wakes up and asks what they're going to do now. The cats throw around some ideas. A few want to remain free, and a few want to go find some nicer twolegs.
Lily speaks up, and says she would like to join WarriorClan, and asks if Monkeystar will have her. Two or three other cats echo her request. Monkeystar purrs that they can, and tells the rest of the cats that if they don't like Clan life, she knows a barn cat that will love the company. Graystripe suggests Fang as Monkeystar's deputy, and Monkeystar and Fang agree. Monkeystar says that it could be fun, as she's never had a deputy before. The thought of being a deputy seems to be bringing Fang out of his misery. Some more cats join WarriorClan: A queen with three kits, A pregnant queen, a cat named Buttercup (tom with missing patches of fur), a tabby-and-white she-cat, and a sandy coloured tom. I couldn't find names for the cats aside from Buttercup.
Fang tells Graystripe that he and him will have their work cut out for them, and Graystripe replies that he isn't staying. He's going back to ThunderClan, thinking of the elder's den, Squirrelflight, Blossomfall, and the rest of his kin. Fang protests that he can't do it alone. Graystripe meows that he can and he will. He says that he can't tell Monkeystar she won't be leader anymore, but he decided that Fang should be her deputy as he knows the cats best. Fang knows how to hunt, fight, and has good initiative. Fang says he isn't sure, since the Clans by the lake have the connection to StarClan, and WarriorClan doesn't. Graystripe admits that he isn't sure if they ever will, but StarClan makes themselves known in mysterious ways. He adds that even without StarClan, they can still function as a Clan, training the kits and apprentices and taking care of one another. Graystripe thinks to himself "If WarriorClan can live as a Clan without StarClan, then maybe our lakeside Clans can do that, too. It will be wonderful if StarClan returns, but will it really be such a disaster if they don't?"
Graystripe feels some comfort knowing the Clans could survive without StarClan, but at the same time, he feels hurt that while he could call out Firestar's name, he'll get nothing in response. He thinks that he can do things without StarClan, and he can still do good things without them. He doesn't want to, but he knows he can. Fang asks if Graystripe is sure he is to be the one to lead them, and Graystripe says he's positive. Graystripe then goes to Petunia, who is still grieving for her twoleg. Petunia is going to stay with WarriorClan until her twoleg comes back. Graystripe knows that the liklihood of the twoleg coming back is small, and Petunia needs to come to terms with it. He explains to her that she has a natural instinct to help cats, and explains that all Clans have a medicine cat. As he mentions the term medicine cat, Petunia mentions she knows about them, having been told by Gremlin, but she denies being one, citing that if she was good at healing, she could have cured Daffodil. Graystripe says she could have if she had the right herbs, and notes that one of the WarriorClan cats is expecting kits. Petunia admits she's delivered kits before, and looks a bit hopeful. Graystripe says he is no medicine cat, but he knows a thing or two about herbs. He explains a few, and Petunia reveals that she knows a fair bit about herbs, and that her twoleg grew several herbs in her garden.
Petunia says that she can teach another cat, if she goes back to her twoleg that is, and suggests Lily. She recites several herbs to him, and Graystripe knows he made the right choice, and when she realizes her twoleg isn't coming back, she'll have a whole new life. The final cats who didn't want to join WarriorClan are saying their farewells. Monkeystar is teaching the Clan the hunter's crouch, while the three kits seem to be everywhere, tussling and playing. Graystripe realizes that this is his doing, and he's helped bring together cats so they can live better lives. He knows that at the start of his "wander" he wasn't sure if he belonged to ThunderClan, but now he knows he belongs there. It may not be the Clan he grew up with during his youth, but it was still ThunderClan, and it's where he belongs. He thinks it was good to come back to the old forest, but he realizes that ThunderClan is his home. He thinks of what Stoneteller told him, that he still has a part to play. He wonders if the "part" is not his wander, but what he's going to do when he gets back to ThunderClan. He announces to WarriorClan that he's going home. Fang asks if she's sure he doesn't want to stay with them, and Graystripe says he can't, as the cats will look to him as a leader, not Fang or Monkeystar. Fang says he'll miss Graystripe, saying he'll never forget him and he's been like a father to him. Graystripe says he would have been proud to call Fang his son, and tells the rest of WarriorClan that they're more than kittypets and rogues, they are warriors.
As Graystripe heads out, he sees Monkeystar leading a patrol, instructing the cats that they're going to patrol their borders. They aren't aware Graystripe is watching them. A tabby and white she-cat asks what they'll do if there's intruders, and Buttercup says they'll rip their throats out. Monkeystar replies that she's leader, and as long as she is, there will be no throat-ripping. Graystripe muses that Monkeystar seems much more mature than the enthusiastic, energetic she-cat he met only a few days before. They begin to praise Graystripe, calling him a noble and honourable cat, and they need to try and be exactly like him. Monkeystar says she thinks he's the best cat in all the Clans, since he traveled so far from his Clan to try and help them, and ended up helping cats he didn't even know. Buttercup says Graystripe is special. Graystripe thinks that he isn't; he's only a creaky old elder. He was useful to his Clan once, he even led them, and while he doesn't think it turned out too badly, those days are long gone. As he's lost in his thoughts, he overhears the WarriorClan cats asking Monkeystar about when Graystripe went into the "forbidden place", and Monkeystar promises to tell them later. Graystripe is amused, thinking that it will be another story to be told for generations. As he heads across old RiverClan territory, he knows that while WarriorClan certainly isn't a Clan like at the lake, they'll care and love their Clanmates, and at heart, that's what a Clan is. If that's what he's accomplished during his wander, then it's not too bad.
He thinks of what Stoneteller told him, of his part to play, and what Millie "told" him, to never give up. He speaks aloud, promising her that he won't ever give up. He decides that he's going to spend one last night with Barley. Then, he'll go back to the mountains to visit Stormfur and his kin. And after that, he's going to the lake, and whatever his destiny demands.

I love that Graystripe is giving Fang advice and tha even he's come to believe that the Clans can survive without StarClan. And I repeat, WarriorClan may just end up being my favorite non-Clan group now. They're adorable, and it's also just nice seeing the traditions still alive in the old territories.

We all thought Graystripe was going to die but there's only 2 chapters left, right?
So, either something big is about to go down, or he (unfortunately, poor boy) lives to see another day

And all of a sudden WarriorClan is a real Clan. I love this so much. Monkeystar is still leader, Fang is deputy and Petunia is medicine cat. And I also really like the speech Graystripe gave Fang. It's a shame that Smudge never got a cameo, but at least we'll be seeing Barley once more before Graystripe leaves.
