The Last Brother: Norman's version - By S'more
βCan you three be good for two minutes?β
Instantly the three black haired, pale skinned teenage boys shut up and got back in their car seatsβ¦when Uncle Norman snapped it was never a good sign.
βSorry Uncle Normanβ¦but just for the record, Tyce started it,β the one with the feathers instead of hair explained, and pointed over at the other, the one who had a long chameleon tail and scales on his cheeks.
Norman glared back at them. βI donβt care who started it Nikolas, Iβm ending it right now,β he explained.
ββ¦Uncle Norman, you know I prefer to be called Nickβ¦β
The squirrel hybrid sighed, this is what happened when you took in the three kids of your dead brother. You got graying hair at the age of 22, which was far too soon in Normanβs opinionβ¦though he had only found two, but that was not the point.
βSo Uncle Norman, where are we going again?β The third boy, who looked almost like a miniature Kai asked.
βWeβve going to the cemetery where my brothers are buried,β Norman replied and ignored the three of them for the rest of the trip there, though if Tyler βTyceβ Walters bugged his brothers one more time, Norman was going to have to go back there himself and tell them to knock it off.
They soon got there and Norman parked the old, dying jeep on the road and got out as the other three followed after him, crashing into each other as well. βOkay, so this is what weβre going to do, we are going to visit where Niko, Kai, and Ty are buried, you three are going to behave or else Iβm not getting you three ice cream after, you will be respectful to the deceased and we will leave when I say so, understood boys?β He asked.
The three nodded, giving fake salutes in response and simultaneously responded with a: βYes sir.β
Norman glared at them. βI mean it, you might all only technically be over a year old, but you look sixteen and I expect you to act like it, when I was sixteen, or hey even younger, I was very well behaved,β he lied easily. βAre we ready to enter the cemetery now?β
They nodded and he sighed in relief as he lead them in, today marked the 27th βbirthdayβ of his three older brothers, who celebrated it on the day they had found each otherβ¦of course all three of them had died by now.
The first tombstone they got to was Tyβs, where it read: Here lies Tyler βDangerβ Walters, a friend, a warrior, and above all else: a brother.
Norman placed some flowers down on the grave, ignoring the three teenagers behind him, he remembered how Ty had died very well, it had been two years after escaping the labs, there was a war going on, Norman had been sixteen at the time, and working undercover on the enemiesβ side to gain information.
He hadnβt been told that Ty had been killed in action until the war was over, it was Kai who told himβ¦Norman could easily remember how he fell apart after that, the brothersβ¦plus Margo, just werenβt the same after Ty had diedβ¦it was a toll on all of them, he remembered that Kai had vowed to take revenge, while Niko broke apart.
However he had dove into his work at the time, which was finding out his familyβs secrets, Hazel had died later that year and it had been surprisingly hard on Normanβ¦and even harder on Lukas, who had wandered off years ago, Norman wasnβt really sure what happened to him.
Norman had however found out about his family, he had gone all the way back to the very first lab for answers, met someone who knew about his grandparents, and he found out a lot about himself and his family.
In the meantime, Kai had killed who had murdered Ty, not only that but he had found a girl and they fell in love, which comes into play later.
However during that timeβ¦when Norman was still away, he lost another brother.
Three years after Ty had died, the Russian Mafia found the brothers, Norman had been gone at the timeβ¦He got called back home by Kai as he explained that both Nikolas and Margo had died, it was a trying time for the two of them.
Norman placed flowers on Nikoβs grave as well, he would stop by where the sisters were buried and place flowers down for them another time, today was brotherβs day.
For awhile there, it was just him and Kaiβ¦and Kaiβs girlfriend of course, they adjusted to life againβ¦until Kaiβs girlfriend got pregnant and died giving birth, this had happened just over a year ago, two years since the death of Nikolas and Margo.
Kai was more than willing to raise his children, the triplets, however the day after their birth, there had been a fire, Kai got caught in it, he died that night, leaving the triplets in Normanβs care.
Norman hadnβt been their for any of his familyβs deaths, however he had vowed to keep their legacy alive. He started Wings up again, howeverβ¦for better reasons, he had at first used it to get revenge on humans, however Kai had helped him see how wrong that was, so now instead it is a friendly facility, dedicated to studying humans and hybrids alike and help both.
No one was getting experimented on.
Now, you can only imagine though, how absolutely terrifying it had been for Norman to get custody over the Kaiβs triplets, they didnβt even have names yet and he was expected to raise them, he had never had to raise anyone before, yetβ¦he wasnβt scared, in fact he had been strangely calm about it all.
He had of course named them after his brothers.
The oldest was Nikolas Ives Walters, a gentoo penguin hybrid who went by Nick nowβ¦Norman refused to call him that.
The next had been Tyler Thaddeus Walters, a veiled chameleon hybrid who preferred to go by Tyce, again Norman refused to call him that.
The youngest was Kaiyo Indigo Walters, a gentoo penguin/veiled chameleon hybrid who looked like the spitting image of his father, and he went by Kay, though once again, Norman did not call him that.
Norman placed the last bit of flowers on Kaiβs own grave and closed his eyes. βHappy 27th birthday guys,β he whispered quietly, content to stay there at their graves as he remembered the first time he had been told that one of his brothers had diedβ¦He had been happy moments before, they had won the war.
At the cost of Tyβs life, which in Normanβs opinion, was not worth it.
The second time it had been over the phone, and Norman had been told that not one but two members of his family had died, that had been extremely hard and he had to take a flight to get back as soon as he could.
Then the last timeβ¦It had been a complete stranger calling him, he was told that Kai had died in a fire in the apartment, he had been out that nightβ¦and that one also came with the surprise that he now had to care for the triplets.
Though Norman had to admit that he sort of assumed that Kai might have died a lot sooner had it not been for the triplets mother, who had helped Kai out through so many of his trials, only to die after giving birth.
Norman didnβt have much left, all he had to remember his brothers by were the boys, and no matter how much stress they caused him, they were his family, his nephews and he loved them with all his heart.
Speaking of the triplets, they were being surprisingly quietβ¦where did they go?
Norman quickly turned around, figuring he would have to chase after them, however to his surprise he found all three of them bowing their heads respectably as they looked at the three graves.
A genuine smile found itβs way on Normanβs faceβ¦He knew he didnβt mess up entirely with those three.
It was Kay who first noticed that Norman was watching them and looked over at his uncle. ββ¦What were they like?β He asked.
Norman smiled. βThey were the most amazing men I have ever met,β he told them honestly, his voice soft and Kay smiled back as Tyce and Nick looked over at him as well.
βDo you think they would be proud of us?β Tyce asked sheepishly and Norman got the idea that while yes they were asking about all three, they had a certain one of his brothers in mind, their father.
He nodded. βYes, you know, you three actually remind me a lot of them, even if you are a bit more stressful than they ever were,β he explained.
Nick tilted his head as he looked over at Norman with a small smile. βReally?β
βYes, and I know this wasnβt what you asked, but I hope you know that your father would be extremely proud of each and every one of you, and your other uncles would be just as proudβ¦I just wish you had the chance to meet themβ¦β Norman trailed off, looking at the ground.
He wasnβt entirely sure what to expect, but a group hug from the three boys certainly wasnβt itβ¦the hug feltβ¦nice, like when he would get hugged by his brothers.
No one said anything for awhile before finally Tyce stopped the hug.
βYeah okay, thatβs enough hugging for me,β he explained and put his hands in the air in mock surrender.
Kay rolled his eyes and lightly punched his brother in the arm. βYeah, we all know you canβt handle real emotion,β he lightly teased and Tyce frowned at him.
Nick held back and looked at Norman. βThey would have been proud of you too,β he told his uncle quietly.
Norman smiled, looking down at the ground. βI hope soβ¦β He trailed off before clearing his throat and getting back into the flow of things. βWell, if weβre all done here, how about we head back to the house?β He suggested.
Kay and Tyce stopped teasing each other and looked over at Norman, simultaneously asking: βIce cream?β
The squirrel chuckled lightly. βYes, weβll get ice cream first,β he assured and Tyce pumped his fist in the air.
βAww yeah, come on, lets go guys!β He said and started off, turning a happy yellow color at the thought of ice cream, and Nick quickly followed after him.
Kay turned to Norman as they started to walk back. βYou knowβ¦you havenβt told us many stories about your brothersβ¦β He started and Norman shrugged in response.
βKaiyo, I am the sole leader in charge of a rather large company, I donβt really have time to sit you three down and tell you storiesβ¦besides, whenever I have tried to before, you all ended up fighting each other,β Norman explained, placing his hands in the pockets of his suit as they walked out of the cemetery and back to the car.
Kay chuckled slightly. βWeβre getting betterβ¦you know Uncle Norman, maybeβ¦maybe while weβre all getting ice cream, you could tell us a few stories about them? Back when you were all together?β He asked sheepishly.
Norman thought it over, he would like to share some of the stories he had about his brothers with the tripletsβ¦βOkay,β he agreed and paused as a thought came to mindβ¦oh there were just so many stories he could tell, which would he even start with?
He smirked as he found a good one to start with. βHave I ever told you about the time Niko, Ty, Indigo and I scared away someone your dad was crushing on?β
βCan you three be good for two minutes?β
