(yes ma’am!) Alderpaw Feathertalon 【 ᵗʷᶦˡᶦᵍʰᵗ 】 It was no secret that prey was steadily and slowly growing sparse over recent moons. The prey pile not only shrank in the amount of food being brought back from the hunting patrols, but the prey was smaller in size - clearly food was lacking for them as well. Hunting and water trips became more frequent duties, Alderpaw had observed. He would know after all - it was his second one since the previous evening. At least there weren’t any expecting queens or kits. Usually they were a celebratory occasion but any additional mouths to feed would put strain on everyone else. At least skipping meals wasn’t occurring yet, or rationing. As far as he noticed anyway. Alderpaw, Snowpaw, and Chickenflight were on the current hunting patrol - and having just started, there wasn’t much to boast about. Alderpaw kept his ears moving every which way in the hopes of detecting the next meal for someone. His round and large green eyes scanned the fields for even the slightest movement and found it hard to not mistake the grass from afar as rabbits bounding towards their burrows. Until he spotted....it. A rabbit that’s given in to the dangers of the open to gain access to the grass that seemed to grow more sparse each few days. Only, the rabbit had spotted him as well. Alderpaw didn’t notice how close he had approached the creature until it perked up, only to look at him dead in the eyes and make a mad dash toward a hole in the ground. Alderpaw wasn’t as swift and lithe as some cats were, but he attempted nonetheless to give chase. The creature dived into a hardly noticeable hole in the ground and Alderpaw followed suit - only for his back legs to be wedged in the entrance - how embarrassing.
Brokensnow Brokensnow practically begged Chickenflight to let him hunt with his son instead, only to be turned down. Brokensnow was the highly paranoid type. Fun loving and playful - except when it came to his only kit. Alderpaw had almost been carried away by a bird of prey before, and it took Brokensnow jumping into the air after them to save him. He’s reminded of the event at every time Brokensnow receives a glance at his reflection. Large talon marks were scored across his chest and minor ones scattered about. However, no physical blemish could remove the one from his heart: his kit almost never came back. If only he could have stayed a kit forever, so Brokensnow would never let him out of his sight, but alas, they all grow up someday he supposed. Brokensnow paced feverishly by the camp entrance, but eyes and ears facing where he last saw Alderpaw. They had to be home any moment now surely, it feels as thought it’s been ages since they’ve been at camp. “It should be a crime to keep apprentices out for so long...” Brokensnow muttered to himself. The tip of his tail flicked back and forth in impatience and worry and hung low in sadness. It should be him out there, an older, more experienced cat. Two apprentices are hardly qualified in his opinion.

Chickenflight » There was a lot of pressure on Chickenflight to make this hunting patrol actually fruitful. Well, the pressure hadn't been from any other cat save for himself really. He didn't want to return back to camp with nothing to show for, and he wanted to give both Alderpaw and Snowpaw reason to feel good about themselves as well. As of recently most of the hunting patrols had been returning to camp without a single thing to even show that they had been hunting. Prey was growing scarcer as the days went on, and cats were starting to grow hungry. They were still making do for now, but Chickenflight had noticed just how sparse the food in camp was getting, and he was worried that soon his Clanmates would have to start going without food to make sure others had enough to eat. But surely there had to be something out there that they could find and catch. Chickenflight could only hope that they would be lucky enough to stumble upon something, especially after how hard it had been to even convince Brokensnow, Alderpaw's father, to let him take his apprentice out on this hunting trip. Chickenflight could understand why the tom had been so reluctant, but Chickenflight needed to keep training his apprentice no matter what. So maybe, just maybe, if they brought something back the black and white tomcat could show that it had been the right choice to bring Alderpaw out for a hunt, and maybe he could help Alderpaw make Brokensnow proud of him and show the warrior that his son was turning into a fine and capable warrior.
So far there hadn't been a single thing even worth going after. The only scents Chickenflight had picked up were scents from hunting patrols from the day before. The ground under paw was dry and dust would puff up underneath every step he took. That worried the tomcat. No wonder prey was becoming scarce - nothing wanted to come out of their dens and deal with the drought that had been ravaging the land for seasons. But surely there would be some prey out there that was just as desperate as the Clan cats. Even prey would have to come out to forage for their own food.
And it seemed like something was finally attempting to brave the outside world for its own food.
At around the same time as Alderpaw had spotted the rabbit, so did Chickenflight. He stiffened in surprise at the sight of the animal, but it didn't take him long to swallow down his shock from actually seeing prey. Before he could even signal for Snowpaw or Alderpaw to go after it, he noticed Alderpaw go after the creature, but the rabbit was one step ahead and bolted for it, making it to its burrow not too far away. Before he could be disappointed at the loss of prey, Chickenflight was swamped with worry for his apprentice when he noticed the tomcat charge straight into the burrow as well and then get stuck with only his hindquarters sticking out.
"Alderpaw!" Chickenflight called out in worry. He motioned for Snowpaw to follow along as he rushed over to where the other apprentice was, ready to help get him out if needed.

Alderpaw Feathertalon 【 ᵗʷᶦˡᶦᵍʰᵗ 】
Alderpaw yowled in frustration, only to shirk his head back in recoil at the echo it caused in his current position. He was so close. He could have lunged after it, swiped at it, ran faster, something! There’s always something he could have done better in anything and for this he was reaping the fruits of his efforts: a mouthful of dirt. The rabbit disappeared from sight as soon as it entered the den, and while Alderpaw was surrounded by the scent, it was only a tease. He couldn’t reach it from where he was. Or wanted to, for that matter. Alderpaw avoided rabbit holes at all costs after hearing stories of cats being trapped under the surface of the earth for one of the foul creatures. But he was desperate for making his Clan proud in this time of need, so logic or fear was certainly out of the picture. He had debated about whether or not he should still try to squeeze himself through and prowl the twisting, seemingly never ending tunnels of the rabbit den, but visions of the ground collapsing on him got the better of his reckless thoughts. Alderpaw clawed at the crumbling, dry earth under his large paws, eyes narrowed in embarrassment and frustration. After hearing his mentor’s muffled voice from outside of the rabbit den, his eyes widened again, both in hope he’ll be free from this earthy prison and fear that Chickenflight and Snowpaw would be disappointed in him to no end. To make up for this mistake, he would have to go on the next few hunting patrols certainly. Not because anyone forced him to, but from the obligation he felt to do better. “I-I’m fine!” Alderpaw squeaked in a less than confident tone. He felt his face and body get hot from the growing embarrassment. “I’m a little stuck though...” he attempted to chuckle lightly but he couldn’t find the breath to - Alderpaw could feel the claustrophobic conditions getting worse with each minute. “Could you uh.....help me out? Maybe dig on the sides?” Alderpaw tried to wriggle himself back out of the entrance but to no avail.

✦ The Stream ✦ peachy keen 's Bumblespots ✦ "The most dangerous person is one who thinks, listens, and observes."
Blood and scattered scales smeared beneath his pads as he lifted it from the crushed corpse. It gave a sad, feeble twitch as its nerves flickered out before falling still. However, when cold amber met striking yellow, his ears drew back, not quite expected such a look. To his credit, Mosquitoswarm had thought her hunting, not observing, and merely wished to assist her. But he’d accidentally overlooked how delicate Bumblespots could be towards animals and how her empathetic nature complimented that.
A sharp intake of breath, followed by an equally sharp exhale, almost like a cough: “sorry.”
The tom had never been the apologetic type, so to hear those words, even if a tad strangled in quality, meant he was trying his best. He cared dearly for the molly, and though he didn’t yet understand all of her quirks, he’d chosen her for a reason.
He eased himself onto the ground, liquid in motion but strong in feel. Muscles rippled beneath a curtain of black fur, pooling over his sides like oozing tar as he lay in a manner similar to a king. And he stared at the killed minnow, its brutal slaying almost rendering it unrecognizable. The warrior murmured something to the prey, almost like a prayer, before turning back to his mate—eyes not cold, but doting.
“It, er, he, will lend us energy.”
The comment allowed him to glance at the she-cat’s stomach, dismayed by what he saw. Bumblespots’ fur tightened around her waist, ribs outlining her typically plump silhouette, barely visible, but still a cause for worry. Mosquitoswarm leapt to his paws, pressing his sturdy frame against her smaller one and coiling his tail around her back, serpent-like in execution, almost as if to protect her from an unseen force.
“Are you ill?” came his probing query. He picked up the minnow and placed it at her paws, willing her with a look to eat. “You need food.”

✦ Medicine Cat's Den ✦ Feathertalon 's Gingerlily ✦ "It is my pleasure."
A smile graced her soft features in response to her mentor’s purr, spreading over like honey, molten and oozing, and marking in her countenance a golden brightness that reached her eyes and established its sincerity—if her presented gentleness wasn’t something to take away from. Her adoration for the molly appeared in grand bouts, a relationship oft described similar to that of mother and daughter. After loosing her own parents, Koipaw sought after something to fill in the subsequent loneliness, easily embracing the idea of a parental figure, and discovering it beneath Gingerlily’s doting wing.
“Of course,” she uttered politely. As per usual, her voice came quietly, just above a whisper, but still plainly clear. Many would assume shyness as the cause, but no, Koipaw was simply naturally soft-spoken, an endearing little chime many eased up against during checkups.
Gliding across roots and soil, the medic reached the cleft-riddled area whose tiny openings bore home to their herbal storage. She appreciated their shared tidiness, which allowed for easy access to every herb. Immediately going to work, she began with beech leaves, tugging out broad specimens with a certain firmness surprising for such a small cat.
Once free, her grip tempered, more lip than tooth, careful not to puncture the packaging leaves’ integrity. Bringing them into the open, she laid them all out in a neat line, one beside the other, and took the time to flatten away loose curls, dainty paws planting at their edges until smooth, level. Five would do for now, technically three considering Hazelpaw and Antpaw would probably need them soon. Now came choosing the contents.
Far ahead of her time and much younger than the other trainees, Koipaw excelled in herbal knowledge and administration, courtesy to her passion in the medical field and Gingerlily’s excellent teachings: a prodigy in her own right. As such, memorization came easy and a deeper understanding even more so. When picking through the stores, she automatically ran through each plants’ attributes and the amount needed. Sometimes felines could catch her lips moving in contemplation, but she never mumbled aloud.
Juniper berries should be taken in small doses, and the notion reflected what she did, organizing two for each leaf. Next came thyme, purely for anxiety purposes as opposed to the typical split usages observed in other plants. She lined three leaves for each, surrounding the blue fruits like an artistic arrangement. In fact, most instances when it came time to create bundles, Koipaw would subconsciously organize them in an aesthetic light. She never really ever noticed until finished.
The medic came to pair the ever-calming chamomile petals with the more vigorous ragwort leaves. Though both had the properties for strength, ragwort had an exclusive potency that she envisioned a clan-mate would need in the long-run. She crushed at the leaves with trained paws, dribbling in the sap and sprinkling the consequent pieces over top of the bundle. Finally, a squishy pink pad pressed against the black beads that made up the poppy seeds. They stuck firmly to the underside of her paw and she limped gingerly back to the parcels, holding them close to chest to prevent spilling, the thrumming of her heart strong and lively against the touch.
Heedfully, she took her remaining paw and nudged some seeds into each parcel. Similar to the juniper berries, a high dosage was not optimal, but a few was sure to only cause mild drowsiness, rather than full-blown sleep. She aimed for the sap so the petite pips remained rigid in place—especially helpful to avoid them rolling off by accident.
And with that she was done. Well, almost. Koipaw took the liberty of lining the sheaf with a few clumps of fern fronds on the tops, not for eating, but rather to keep the bundles fresh until usage. It all came together quite nicely, not to mention well ordered. Koipaw took a moment to behold her handiwork in a surge of delight. Hopefully the Clan would benefit from her hard work.
“I’m finished, Gingerlily,” she called out to her mentor. Her facial features were curved, happy, a certain infectious brightness that could make anyone smile in kind. "Come see!"

Bumblespots ᔕɿɱƿՆעᗰעς੮ע
Bumblespots could hardly stay disappointed for long. She knew he meant to merely help. He was caring, loving in the best ways he knew or saw fit to be, thought just occasionally clueless. So, rather than mourn the fish for much longer, she laid down on the bank of the stream, her paws crossed one over the other, gazing at Mosquitoswarm with warm and gentle eyes as he situated himself beside her. She leaned into him slightly, knowing he could support the weight. Mosquitoswarm was far from delicate or dainty. Under his luscious coat is the muscles he used to hunt and defend as part of his warrior duties. Bumblespots gave her mate a small, sad smile before rubbing her ginger and white head against his own, craning her neck slightly to reach his cheek. ”I’m hardly much to worry about. You, on the other hand should eat more. You can’t be a warrior if you don’t have the strength to act as such.” she chuckled, guiding the less than savory looking fish with her small paw towards Mosquitoswarm’s large ones. The mess of food did look tempting, but Bumblespots would have felt terrible considering she already ate a mouse that morning. Eating once or twice a day for a warrior who didn’t contribute much anyhow was only fair to those who need more food than she. Bumblespots moved her cheek from his and instead took the liberty of grooming her mate. She often tried to keep his coat clean, but with the loose dirt flowing through the wind so often everyone looked a tad more matted than usual. At least, Bumblespots did, but perhaps that was because she was hardly in camp. The outdoors was far more interesting anyhow, more sights and smells than the same cats in the same dens talking about the same duties she had little interest participating in.

Gingerlily » Koipaw was an excellent apprentice. Of course, Gingerlily had never had an apprentice to train before until now, but she couldn’t imagine the process being any easier than it was. She had been lucky with the apprentice StarClan had chosen for her, and she was more than proud of the little calico’s progress. Gingerlily would have been happy with any apprentice she received, but Koipaw was certainly the kind of apprentice she had always dreamed of. Mild mannered and easy to get along with, a cat that reminded Gingerlily a lot of herself. Koipaw was quick to learn and had a natural knack for healing and for herbs. Beyond just that, though, the older calico felt a special bond with Koipaw. She felt, in a way, like a mother to the apprentice. Even as a medicine cat Gingerlily had always entertained the idea of one day becoming a mother to her own biological kits, but she wouldn’t push for it to happen. There were times when Gingerlily could be called a hopeless romantic, one to fall for any tom or molly that came to her den with a sweet smile and a charming personality. As she had grown older she had managed to control her feelings a bit better, which allowed her to focus more on what she had to do now rather than focus on any crushes she might have at the time. But beyond that, being a mother was always a dream she had, and still had. StarClan was allowing her this chance with Koipaw, and even if, some time down the road, Gingerlily had her own kits, she would still always see Koipaw as her first.
The dilute calico put those thoughts aside for the moment. She needed to focus on her apprentice rather than go on a tangent about the what ifs of her life and whatnot.
With tail curled neatly around her paws, she watched the young calico gather the right herbs and remedies for what had been called for, and without fail she managed to do everything she needed without a problem. That came to no surprise to Gingerlily. Koipaw was quick to learn and managed to retain information given to her without a problem.
Before long Koipaw’s voice, soft as ever, echoed through the den. While Gingerlily had stayed relatively close, she pushed herself up to her paws and padded over to where her apprentice had made the little packets of calming herbs. ”Wonderful job,” she purred, eyeing the wraps Koipaw had made with skilled paws and a sharp mind. ”I’d say you’ve perfected wrapping these up quicker than I ever did. I remember always being told that I was taking too much time and to stop letting myself get caught up in my own thoughts.” Back then she had been upset that she hadn’t done her job to her mentor’s liking, but now she thought back on those memories with fondness. Even if the medicine cat before her, Ashfeather, had been a little less warm and friendly than Gingerlily, he had been a great mentor and teacher. He had actually only passed into StarClan’s lands a couple seasons ago, his old age not pairing well with the drought that had started to settle within the land like a bad plague. Gingerlily had been upset that she had not been able to keep her old mentor alive, but she had learned over the course of her training that a medicine cat could not save all their patients and when it was time for a cat to leave to StarClan, then they should be allowed to leave.
Once again she had to push unneeded thoughts aside so she could focus on Koipaw. Perhaps Gingerlily had never grown out of letting her mind wander to places it didn’t need to be at the time, and at this point she probably never would.
