Batwhisker » If not for Doveheart the tomcat wasn't sure how far he would have been able to get away. Some cat probably would have been able to help him, but even then he wasn't sure he'd have the will to actually push onward if not for Doveheart. He was going to keep her safe, to see that she survived, and to make sure that she healed and overcame the injuries she had received from both fox and fire.
The fire still raged hot and dangerous behind them, but Batwhisker felt more rain cooling his pelt off than anything else now. The smoke wasn't as dense as it had been, but his eyes still stung and each breath he took was still a hot, searing pain.
He had enough will power to take a few more steps, but he wasn't doing this for himself, he was doing it for the cat beside him. With the last of his strength, he reached down and took Doveheart's scruff into his jaws and pulled, hoping it would be enough to get Doveheart steadily back onto her paws so he could take her the last few steps into the safety of the Thicket with their Clanmates.

Antpaw » A part of him was aware that he was being shuffled off to run away from camp because of a fire, but another part of him was so tired and numb from everything that had happened to him in the past few days that he wasn't sure where he was or what was even going on. And to add even more to that he had been with Gingerlily one moment, then the next he was passed on to a warrior that he was sure was Rillwatcher. Antpaw honestly couldn't tell through all the yowling, the hard rain, the blaze behind them, and the smoke that was burning his eyes and drying out his throat. The confusion of everything was greater than the pain and he was almost able to ignore the fact that each breath he took made him shudder and gasp, and that each step he took made him stumble and almost fall. If not for the other cat he was pressed up against he would have fallen and given up by this point.
Each step and each breath was torture. Antpaw was sure his chest was about to cave in at any moment. He wasn't sure just how much longer he would be able to push on, even with the help of another cat, and ever so briefly he wondered if it would just be best to give up now and let himself succumb to whatever cruel fate StarClan had in store for him. Would they tear the air out of his lungs and suffocate him in dust and ash? Or would they leave him in the path of the blaze and sear him to nothing more than a pile of cinder? Neither death sounded appealing, but if this pain was something he had to deal with for much longer he might actually consider suffocating or being burned alive. At least then there would be a definite end to the pain his body was sending through him like bolts of lightning.
Something - or rather someone - pulling at his scruff had Antpaw fall into natural instinct. At first his body's reaction was to fall limp and to just let the warrior at his side carry him the rest of the way, but Antpaw had just enough spark left in him that the action was what it took to get him to put a little bit of effort into running away. The faintest of growls escaped the young tom. "I don't," a cough, "have to be held," another cough racked his body, "like a kit." A third bout of coughing trembled through him, almost knocking him over if not for being held by Rillwatcher. Despite that though there was just enough in him to keep going at the moment if only due to him feeling like he was being treated like a kit by this point.

[RILLWATCHER]Feathertalon Rill smiled knowingly through the tuft of Ant’s scruff in his jaws, despite the worsening pain raking through his throat and chest. The apprentice’s weak protest was a small glimmer of hope for the both of them, for it showed that the young one had some fight left. All Antpaw needed now was one last push.
“If you…don’t want…to be carried like a kit,” Rillwatcher wheezed between breaths through Antpaw’s fur, “then…run…like a warrior!”
Rill increased his speed and yanked at Antpaw’s scruff, guiding the both of them through a patch of sage bushes. He could see the stream up ahead now, and the tree line of the thicket beyond that. They were almost there. Although supporting Antpaw had proven to be effective, the warrior could feel his own strength leaving him. However, the blaze behind them cast a long shadow before them and the loud roars of the raging fire rang in his ears. He could feel the heat on his tail and haunches, though he dared not look back. A jolt of terror willed his body onward.
Rillwatcher plunged into the stream without a moment’s hesitation. He released Antpaw so that he may swim under him and support the apprentice's front paws and head above water with his back. Then the warrior used the last of his strength to paddle the both of them toward the other side. He gasped desperately for air as he barely held his own nose above the water.

Antpaw » That was all it took to give Antpaw just enough energy to surge forward with the last bit of strength he had left in his little body.
Everything in him was telling him to stop, telling him to just give up and be taken from fire or suffocation, but one last spark to survive was enough for him to push forward. With the help of Rillwatcher the young tomcat was able to throw himself at the stream. He was reminded of his plunge into the icy waters just the day before, and for a moment he panicked, afraid that he wouldn't be able to get himself up and out of the water this time around. Fortunately, his body knew what to do and instinct kicked in, his limbs screaming at him to stop but he didn't listen. Doing all he could to keep his head above the water, he paddled forward, determined to make it out.

[RILLWATCHER] FeathertalonA surge of pride welled up within the warrior as he watched Antpaw prove his ability and paddle himself across the stream. Learning how to keep moving, and move quickly, while in pain was an acquired skill of endurance. He knew the apprentice always had it in him, though it was unfortunate that this is how he would have to learn. Rillwatcher swam closely next to Antpaw on the side that was downstream, just in case he needed to lend his support again. His attention was so focused on his charge that it wasn’t until Rill’s front paws touched the shore that he realized his own strength was totally depleted. The tom tried to pull the other half of his body up on land, but his muscles quivered uselessly and refused to respond. He steeled himself against the shock of panic to turn his head toward Antpaw.
“Well done, Ant!” he said through raspy coughs, “Don't stop now! I’ll be right behind you! Keep running!”
Rill understood that he would need a moment to rest his muscles before he could exert himself again, but he didn’t know how long it would take. He glanced over his shoulder and saw that the muted colors of the opposite shore had nearly been consumed by the bright, expansive orange blaze. For better or for worse, the water from the stream had served to clear his vision a bit, and he noticed that bits of glowing embers were leaping from the vast fire and riding the wind like tiny harbingers of destruction.

Doveheart ;; Thicket ;; Batwhisker ;; Feathertalon ;;
Their movements were excruciating and Doveheart fought against the creeping blackness that tried to claw it's way into her vision. Her ears rang loudly and it washed away the hisses and crackles of the flames behind them. When Batwhisker's teeth grasped her scruff, she found herself leaning into him and using his lean body to help guide her pawsteps forward. Because he was aiding her, each step felt lighter and used left effort, which she was thankful for. After their misadventure with the fox, then the fire, Doveheart had no more strength left to give. All she had was her will power, but even that was dwindling and flickering like the embers that danced around them.
Their steps passed the thicket and their unbearable escape was over. Without hesitation, Doveheart melted to the earth and laid panting, her lungs screaming and her throat tight with pain. She longed to close her eyes and rest, but she lifted her head instead, locking her pale gaze onto Batwhisker. We made it... she felt emotion swell in her chest - a thankfulness she could never describe to the tom who had practically dragged her to safety. Twice.
She finally leaned her head on the damp earth. Under the cover of trees, the rain droplets weren't so intense, so she found comfort in that. Her leg was throbbing with pain and her pelt was smudged grey by the ash, but she was finally able to relax. Her breath was coming out in ragged pants, but she hadn't the strength to complain.

Antpaw » Every movement was torture. Every breath was excruciating. Yet he continued on, pushing through the stream’s water until finally, finally, his paws hit the surface of land on the other side. Antpaw gritted his teeth as he used one last surge of power to push himself up onto dry land. As he did so he stumbled forward and fell down onto the ground, a panting, wet mess of a cat, but he was alive. If not for the very last bit of strength he had Antpaw would have been a goner. And if not for Gingerlily getting him out of the den and if not for Rillwatcher helping him the rest of the way, the ruddy tomcat would have had never made it this far.
Rillwatcher.
He had just faintly heard the other tom’s voice from somewhere, but Antpaw couldn’t judge the distance due to the pounding in his ears and the roar of fire and storm. He had no idea where the the other tom could have gone off to.
Antpaw could have just left Rillwatcher to fend for himself. The apprentice could have dragged himself the rest of the way into the Thicket to be free from the blaze’s temperature and find shelter among his Clanmates that had already made it, but he did something that, for Antpaw, was rather surprising.
With the little strength he still had from the rush of irritation earlier, he turned and clawed himself back toward the stream. ”Rillwatcher!” He called out, voice hoarse. ”I’ve got you!” It took him a moment to find the other tom still splayed out in the waters of the stream, but once he had he leaned forward and took the warrior by the scruff, weakly tugging him forward in hopes of getting Rillwatcher onto safe, dry land.

Batwhisker » It took every last ounce of strength he had to drag Doveheart and himself the rest of the way. What was probably only a few steps forward and a couple of seconds long felt like an entire trek from one end of the territory to the other and back, and it felt that long as well. Even if every single piece of him was screaming at him to stop, Batwhisker continued on. He just needed a few more steps...he was starting to finally see the end. Just a little bit more....just one more step…
As soon as he had made it the black tomcat collapsed onto the ground.
His long limbs folded underneath his slender body, his head lolling almost lifelessly to the side to press against Doveheart. He found solace in the presence of the molly, and he would have laughed in exhausted joy there beside her if not for the scorching pain that raged in his lungs with every breath of air he took. He felt Doveheart shift against him, and for one bright moment his amber gaze met her yellow-green gaze and the faintest of smiles pulled at his lips.
They had made it. Finally, they could rest.
Batwhisker knew they wouldn’t be able to stay there forever, but for now they would be okay. They were together, they were safe, and they could lay there together and gather any more strength their bodies might lend them. If StarClan was kind then Gingerlily or Koipaw would be nearby soon to give them the treatment they needed - the treatment that Doveheart needed - but for now all that mattered was that they had made it together.
Relief swamped over him. He nuzzled his head closer to the molly, able to give her fur a few rasps of his tongue. It wasn’t much, but it was all he could manage at the moment, and he figured it was better than nothing.

Doveheart ;; Thicket ;; Batwhisker ;; Feathertalon ;;
Doveheart's sore limbs and her tight lungs seemed to be forgotten when the relief washed over her like a wave. They had reached safety, and she could hear her clanmates murmuring nearby. She tucked her head closer to Batwhisker, feeling comforted by his closeness. She barely managed a purr in her sore throat as she felt his tongue rasping over her ashy pelt. They had made it to safety, and she was positive that without the black tom she would have joined StarClan that evening. She owed him her life and she vowed that she would make it up to him in return.
She offered a few raspy strokes of her tongue over Batwhiskers ears. If she had the breath to speak, she would have thanked him. Instead, she just curled up close to the tom and basked in his warmth. The thought of moving again - which they would have to shortly no doubt - made her cringe. She felt as though her paws would drop off! Now to mention her injured leg, where crimson blood crusted her fur around it, was throbbing unbearably. Before they were able to move, they would need to be tended too. A flush of embarrassment crossed Doveheart. If only she hadn't been so foolish to take on a fox, and drag Batwhisker into the fight as well.
She pushed her nose into the toms short fur and closed her eyes. Her ears perked to hear the roaring of the flames on the distance, but the pattering of rain offered some reassurance.

Stormfrost ;; Thicket ;; Mothflight ;; brambleflight ;;
Mothflight's words caused a chilled shiver to trembled down Stormfrost's spine. Had StarClan abandoned them? He shook his head to rid his mind of the thoughts. He couldn't start thinking about that, because then he would lose all hope. Whilst it did seem disheartening that their clan had suffered the drought, now this fire, they couldn't give up hope. He straightened up and took a stabilizing breath. "I don't think StarClan would ever turn their backs on us," his tone had honest conviction this time, unlike last time. "Times seem more grim than ever, but StarClan wouldn't ever leave us."
The great grey tom looked solemn as he looked over the thicket and towards the flickering red and orange through the trees. They would have to check and ensure the clan was all gathered, but when he searched with his yellow gaze, he couldn't spot his clan leader. He shuffled his paws nervously, but didn't say anything as he didn't want to make Mothflight more worried than she appeared.

His words brought only a little comfort to her as she kept close behind him. She could feel the weight on her chest heavily, what use was she to the clan if she couldn't see anymore? Would she be better off an elder..? I don't want to be an elder! I'm young...I haven't even had a mate, experienced the joys of falling in love. Please Starclan let my eyesight come back, I've done everything for my clan and this is how I'm repaid? She wished she could see Rabbitspring again, find comfort in the sight of his brown tabby fur and gentle green eyes. "Rabbitspring...I...please don't ever leave me." She sounded like a lost kitten, her voice trembling as they continued on. She was becoming more panicked with each moment, tripping over her own paws but catching herself. With each missed pawstep, her heart bolted up into her throat. Why am I so worried? If I die in this fire maybe it'll be a blessing to the clan...less herbs to use on a clanmate, less worries about whether or not I'll see again.

Rabbitspring's heart ached for the panic that sounded in mottled she-cat's tone. With each pawstep, he dug his claws into the newly damp earth and he felt the urge to run. He wanted to spring forward and race away up the moors, leaving the flames and the stress behind, to feel the freedom that the wind through his pelt gave him. But when he watched Ashenflame stumble beside him like a trembling kit, he knew he couldn't leave. More than ever, Ashenflame needed him. "I'm not going anywhere without you," his tone was unwavering, as though this was a fact he was certain of. His side touched hers as he guided her forward - his pace slower than he would have liked, but he didn't complain.
The thicket was just ahead and relief spread through Rabbitspring's body and through his paws. More than himself, he was concerned for Ashenflame. "We're almost there," he meowed close to her ear, "you're doing great!" He hoped his words could bring her some comfort, although he wasn't sure words would heal the wound that she had received that day. His mind was so concern for Ashenflame that it was easy for him to forget about the scorching feeling in his lungs or the scratch in his throat. He ducked his head as they pushed their way into the thicket and a sense of relief flooded him. They weren't in the clear yet, but the familiar sight of his safe clanmates lifted his spirits. "We made it, I think mostly everyone is here," he turned and pressed his nose to her cheek gently, the scent of smoke on her fur filled his nostrils. "You're safe."

She trembled like a leaf in the wind when they finally came to a resting point. She could hear the movement of the other cats around them but she made no movement towards them. She didn't want them to see her like this, cause them more concern than they probably already felt. When he pressed his nose to her cheek, she ducked away and buried her head in his chest. The molly felt small, hiding her face in his fur. She could scent the smoke still clinging to him but there was a hint of his original scent among it. "Can we just sit here for a bit?" She asked through his fur, not wanting to find Gingerlily right now despite the pain in her eyes. She didn't want to hear that there was nothing they could do for her eyes. She felt miserable, today had been such a good day for her and now it was like her whole world was crashing down on her. Had they really just been out here not too long ago, enjoying themselves? Maybe we should have stayed out longer...we could have avoided the whole fire. Guilt settled in now, no she would feel even worse if they weren't there for the clan during this time. You did nothing for them besides blind yourself, you fool.

When Ashenflame tucked her head into his chest, Rabbitspring felt the fierce urge to protect her. He rasped his tongue slowly and gently over her head, wrinkling his nose at the taste of ash and flames that lingered. It didn't stop him though. "We can sit forever," he'd paused just long enough to murmur softly. She seemed so small and helpless trembling against him, so unlike the joyful cat he'd been bounding through the forest with just earlier that day - or the cat he would patrol with and hunt with, who seemed bright and warm. He glanced in his peripherals for Gingerlily or Koipaw, but couldn't see them just yet. Even if they had been around, he wasn't sure Ashenflame would be ready to move yet. He shifted closer to her - if that was possible - and twinned his tail with hers.
What if she is never able to see again? His heart thudded at the thought and he recalled how fearful Ashenflame had seemed when she spoke of not wanting to join the elders. How can StarClan be so cruel? Hasn't she been through enough? His tongue swiped over her ear, I'm sure she could learn to hunt and fight as well as any cat, she'll just have to learn again. Rabbitspring vowed silently that he would help her every pawsstep of the way. "Ashenflame, no matter what happens, I'll stay by your side," he verbalized her vow, his tone was certain yet soft. His tone only softened again when he murmured, "Are you okay?"

"I'm scared too... though I'm not hurt" Rabbitspring lowered his head and he glanced to his wheezing and tired clanmates. He could see the rumpled pile of pelts that were Doveheart and Batwhisker - the pair had barely managed to make it to safety alive and for a moment he was afraid they'd succumbed to their injuries. It was only the faint rise and fall of their sides that made him sigh with relief. Momentarily he felt a stab of guilt at the fact that he was fine, when his clanmates were not. He swallowed down the guilt and attempted to dismiss it. He was fit and able meaning that more than ever his clan needed him - he would work tirelessly to make sure they were safe. "But I know that we'll be okay. We can't be broken this easily." He looked at her pale blue eyes as she pulled back and a frown tugged his lips down. She was staring, but not seeing. He longed to offer a solution, but it was impossible. "Gingerlily will be able to help you, and it'll be okay." He offered a little feebly.

Turning his gaze back to Ashenflame, he was more aware of her sightless gaze from the way they gazed endlessly, yet her expression wasn't registering. "I hope you don't think you're a burden now," he blurted suddenly, then he shifted shyly. "I-I know that you felt like a burden before, too. It's not true though. Not even a little." He couldn't stand to feel the sadness that radiated off her in waves. "Even if you take a little while to learn, I know you will. You're - you're so brave, and smart. I can't imagine you needing to retire when your nose and your ears are perfectly capable..." his voice drifted away but not because he wasn't committed to the words. It was because he had so much to say that he wasn't sure how to say it.

As he listed off missing cats, her heart fell down further. That was more than she had thought and one of them was even the leader! She hoped they all found themselves to the thicket soon, the fire would only grow worse as time wore on until it had ensnared their home and everything inside it. She was about to speak when he began to talk again, her ears as she hung onto every word. Her emotions changing once more as her heart swelled. Someone believed in her, something she hadn't thought she needed to hear. "Thank you for the kind words, Rabbitspring." She closed her eyes once more, trying to picture the tom before her in her mind. Was he holding words back? She couldn't be sure without reading his face but she could feel a lingering air around them as his words trailed into a sudden halt. "You're a good warrior too, if it weren't for you I'm not sure I'd be sitting in this thicket." She admitted, flicking her tail.

Rabbitspring wondered if he'd blurted out too much to the she-cat. It wasn't often the tom took to passionate speeches, and after doing so he felt warm under his pelt. He yearned again, once more, to be racing on the moors. But he was needed with Ashenflame, her sightless gaze stared aimlessly, and more than ever he felt protective of her. If he raced the moors, he wanted her by his side. It was a strange thought to the tom, yet he was certain. "You would have made it out one way or the other, but I'm just happy I could help," he meowed. He swept his tail over her flank, staring at her mottled sides which were covered in flecks of smudged ash - it would take days to clean the scent of ash from their fur. "I think I just mostly wanted to say... no matter what happens, I know that you'll be able to make the most of it." Many cats retired early when they lost senses or had injuries that couldn't be cured, but there had to be techniques that would allowed Ashenflame to remain a warrior like she loved.

The cream warrior hissed, her level voice falling off into anger "we've never wronged them, why would they just-just leave us to die like this?" She continued to move away from the smoke. Beetlejaw The tom made sure Stonehawk was safe before going in to find the warrior's littermate. Surely she was around here? Firstly he called out to her by name. If she hadn't fallen unconcoous she may be able to call back, at least a little bit. ((Little repost!!!
