Lilly
Lilly's sixth period class ran late. Her food prep teacher spoke monotonously about how they would be making various types of crêpes all throughout the next class. Lilly honestly didn't care, because it didn't matter if you made the food wrong in food prep. The only way to get something lower than an A would be to set the room on fire. Frankly, she didn't think she would start a fire in the kitchen that they called a classroom, but it didn't really matter. Her thoughts just seemed to drag onto things that didn't make sense in general. Eventually the bell rang and her class was excused. Sighing with relief, she gathered her books, shoving them into her vintage backpack. Regathering her bag and the books it couldn't carry, Lilly pushed her glasses up high on her face and beamed at anyone who passed by.
"Hello," she murmured to various students, pushing her way past them in the process. "Hi." Lilly smiled to a sophomore who she often saw and talked to, and he grinned back. At last, she arrived at the place that her feet intended to carry her towards. The gym. Booths lined the glossy floor, filled with students who spoke to each other and handed out flyers for different programs and clubs. Then she saw her; Stevie Hackett. This was the junior, she thought, who was running the Cryptid Club. At least, that was what Lilly had heard from the rumors. She had heard people whisper about Stevie, about how she was weird for keeping the club alive. Lilly, however, didn't listen to anyone, because sometimes teenagers just gossiped for others to bring someone else down. She wasn't for letting people get sad, and wanted to support Stevie in her discoveries and conspiracies. Lilly walked over to the booth that Stevie sat at, seeing someone else standing in front of her. She didn't recognize the taller girl, but what she did notice was that she looked older than Lilly and Stevie, and was about 3 or 4 inches taller than Lilly. She formed a line behind the mystery girl, peeking over the side of her arm to look at the posters sitting at the booth. She knew joining this club wouldn't be a regret, because her potential club mates already looked like people Lilly could easily warm up to. Yet, she was good at mingling with mostly anyone. Little kids however, were a different, painful story, but they warmed up to a person once you talked to them long enough.

Stevie was bouncing around and waving her hands in the air like a violent sparrow as she tried to catch Swan's attention. The senior waved back and smiled lightly. She appreciated the junior's passion and enthusiasm, especially when it came to the Cryptid Club. She didn't know Stevie that well. In fact she really didn't know any of the members well despite being in the club for nearly three years. People came and went all the time, which certainly didn't help that fact.
Swan furrowed her brows, surprised no one else had come to the booth yet. "Well with the last couple classes off they will get here," she responded dryly. Though they better come, she added silently. Swan hated very few things. One of those things were people flaking on their commitments. If people didn't intend to go through with something, then they shouldn't commit to it. Her attention was turned back to the girl as she asked about the club fair.
"No, I have no interest in the other clubs. I was also already later than I wanted to be." Swan had zero interest in other club activities. If her parents hadn't pushed her to join one, she wouldn't have. However she didn't regret joining the Cryptid Club. She had many fond memories with Robin Hackett and the other original members of the club. Now most of them left or moved on to do other things. Swan would never admit it, but she did miss those times. Once more she was taken from her thoughts as Stevie spoke.
"Yes I am looking forward to having more discussions about the unknown with you and whoever else is in the club. How about yourself, Hackett?" She paused for a moment as anothrt girl approched. She veaguly recognized her from the halls, though had never spoken to the other student before. She simply dipped her head in acknowledgement before glancing towards Stevie. Perhaps she knew who the newcomer was.

S T E V I E
The Ruler
Stevie nodded her head politely as the senior replied. She got the faintest notion of Swan's agitation when she told her that she was the first member to come to the booth, but Stevie didn't share the older girl's feelings. The less weirdos that talked to her in public, the better. That's no way to talk about future club members, her brother's voice echoed in her head, and while she knew it was right, she couldn't help but roll her eyes. All the Cryptid Club member's had their quirks- some more than others, if she couldn't laugh at them from time to time then there was no way she was going to make it to the end of the year.
Turning her focus back to Swan, she was vaguely aware of the senior talking about not being interested in other clubs or something equally as boring. Feigning a smile she started shuffling her flyers around, trying to find something to occupy her hands. It wasn't that she didn't like Swan, it was just that this conversation felt like it was stalling. The two of them just weren't in the same head space.
The conversation was saved, however, when Swan brought up the cryptid club. That at least they had in common. "Yeah the unknown's pretty cool," she said awkwardly. "Apparently some tourists up in Alaska thought they saw a thunderbird while they were touring some glaciers, so I wanna gonna follow that up for our first meeting."
Running a hand through her hair, she let out a nervous laugh. "Well I'm pretty excited, obviously," the lie came easy, slipping out from her lips before she'd even realized it. "It's just weird to be in charge all of a sudden. Like, I guess I just figured that the leadership would default to one of the seniors." She shook her head. "I mean- it's great to have Carter helping out too, it'd just be nicer if he actually showed up on time."
She would have gladly continued, had she not noticed another figure approaching the booth. She looked familiar, so much so that Stevie could've sworn she'd had a class with the girl today. She knew that she was a junior and that she was pretty well known, but for whatever reason she was blanking on her name.
Throwing a quick wave at the girl, she turned slightly away from Swan. "Hey there, welcome to the Cryptid Club!" Stevie felt as fake as the smile that crossed her face. "Were you looking to get information on our club here, or did you need help finding another booth?"

Lilly Lilly stepped to the right of Swan, her face lighting up in a plain manner. She looked at Stevie's face which had an awkward glint to it, seeing as she never really saw the girl smile in the halls, so she didn't understand why putting on a show mattered. "Yes, well," Lilly straightened her glasses for the second time in ten minutes. "I was looking for information, and I was also hoping to join, if possible. I've heard quite a bit about this club, and I'm intrigued. I'm really into the unknown and supernatural, you know?" She paused, thinking of what else to say.
"Oh, I'm Lilly by the way. I'm not sure if we've met before, but it's Stevie, right?" Lilly added. She thought of what else to say, but couldn't come up with anything. Then she turned to Swan and gave her a tiny wave, acknowledging her so she knew she wasn't ignored. Lilly tried her best to divide her attention, because attention was the most common thing that broke up friendships, and relationships. She herself had her fair share of broken relationships in general. Lilly liked to believe that the only real connection she had with someone was her brother, who she barely saw because he stayed at home. He wasn't allowed to go wherever he pleased like her, as he was only 14-years-old. She often thought her parents were more strict on the topic concerning curfew and where they allowed her to go, and her brother wasn't even allowed to go on a walk outside without Lilly. Trying to shake away her thoughts relating to family, Lilly straightened her posture and tucked a slice of hair behind her ear. Her mother's words cursed at her in her mind, asking her why she never stood up with the height she had. Because one day, she would grow up to be "the model that represents China". She realized too soon that she was thinking about only her mother now, and tried to focus on the Cryptid Club. That was the main reason why she was standing in front of a booth with Stevie Hackett sitting on the other side, after all. What was at school stayed in school, and her family was a whole 'nother conversation.

Stevie was trying to hold the conversation, but she seemed too nervous to do so. Swan slightly smiled, a bit amused by the younger girl's awkwardness. The senior appreciated the junior's attempts. "Interesting way to start it." Swan paused for a moment and realized how that sounded. "And I mean that in a good way. Having a recent report of a sighting if something will get people into the conversation." I hope, she silently added. Sometimes it was diffcult to get people to talk. Even if they wouldn't be judged in the Cryptid Club, people tended to be uneasy talking about that kind of thing.
"Excited? I don't mean to be rude, but you're nervous. Uneasy. But I see your point. Typically leadership roles will go by seniority. In my case, however, I wasn't interested in leadership." Swan wouldn't make a good leader. Too cold and probably too skeptical to be one. The senior paused for a moment and locked eyes with Stevie. "Look you're going to do fine as the Cryptid Club leader. I trust you and believe you'll do a great job. You just need to do the same for yourself." Swan didn't know if her words would help the junior, however she hoped it was a confidence booster.
Before their conversation could continue, Stevie was already talking with the newcomer. Swan listened in, though her eyes were fixed on the crowd. People passed by the booth, most barely giving it a second look. She could hear some students whisper about "the freaks" in the Cryptic Club. Swan wanted to call out the students, to say what they wanted to out loud. To not be cowards about it. However it could make the club members look bad and the senior couldn't do that to Stevie or the others. The new girl, Lilly, gave her a Wave, which Swan returned with a small nod of acknowledgement.
