inspired by the age old trend of groups of friends finding themselves in heaps of trouble, the forest centers around a group of highschoolers who slowly discover the truth behind their small town. Light is a fickle thing. It dances from place to place, reflects into crystals and mirrors. It brings with it warmth, color, and good. There is a power to light. A low, slow-burning energy. With daylight shining on their backs humans have reached unimaginable potential. But every light has a shadow. There are no smoke and mirrors when it comes to the dark. It is raw, natural- powerful. It is ancient, for before light ever existed, the opposite ruled the world. In storybooks we are taught to be afraid of the dark. It's where monsters play, where magic exists only to curse. For as long as the world has turned, light and dark thrived in a mutual balance. For all those who turned to the dark, there would be soldiers of light to hold them back. For centuries this harmony was upheld through mere coincidence, but now darkness is multiplying. Soon, there may not be enough light left to fight.
Firesbrooke Community High School has its share of weird. Secret passages hide behind walls of marble, rituals echo out from empty classrooms. Students see things at their highschool. At first it was charming, after all nothing sounds cooler than having a haunted highschool. However, these "paranormal" instances have become more and frequent in recent years. And more and more violent. One cheerleader woke up after passing out in the locker room, claw marks criss-crossing her arms. A janitor quit after discovering a faucet that dripped a rust-colored liquid looking suspiciously like blood. These reports were soon joined with more, and it became more and more clear that it wasn't just the school that was cursed, it was the whole town. While most call these experiences "figments of imagination", those already seeking mysteries began to turn their focus onto Firesbrooke.
Case in point, FBC's own cryptid club. With new student leaders, the club is unsure of the direction of its future. But they did know one thing: their collections of wayward students were close. But to what, no one could be sure.

Buried deep within the forests of northern Wisconsin, Firesbrooke seems like a town out of time. Traffic glides across dirt road, and people walk leisurely along wooden boardwalks without a care in the world. Forests surround the majority of the town, leaving plenty of secret spaces for late night parties and hideaways. The majority of residential building are located on the east side of the town, the side that faces a small lake. In the summer months, the teens of Firebrooke enjoy long boat trips out on the water, although it rarely gets warm enough to swim. In the winter months, the snow banks get so tall they become hard for students to commute to school. The center of town circles around Main St., and both the Police Station and Fire Station are located on it. There are a few notable locations on Main St:
- Main Street Diner: Retro is the perfect way to describe Main Street Diner. Whether it be the black and white tiled floor, the jukebox, or the neon signs, there seems to always be something to remind you of the past. Many highschoolers hang around the crimson booths, and some even get part time jobs here during the summer.
- Minerva’s Bookstore: A simple brick building with a quaint sign hanging over the glass door, the bookstore has been a part of town nearly since is creation. Its walls are lined with all sorts of books, from nonfiction and reference materials to high fantasy and slice of life novels to cutesy notepads and pens. Owned by Minerva Flynn, this establishment also serves as a sort of town library, loaning books to students and other townsfolk when requested.
- In Bloom: This small florist shop seems to always be full of life, even in the dead of winter. While highschoolers don’t typically spend time here, it isn’t uncommon to have a student working part time. During the Valentine's Day season, students often flock here to find the perfect flowers for their crush.
- Half-Priced Cinema: Simple and clean, Half-Priced Cinema is exactly what it advertises itself as. Students flock to this establishment on weekends, and it occasionally has special showings and outdoor projections.
- Main St. Coffee: Main Street Coffee is the biggest coffee shop in town. They're well known throughout Firesbrooke and a popular hangout place for teenagers and adults. There's rumors that they're trying to buy Java Drop on Washington Blvd.
- Town Hall: Large and Looming, Town Hall is a building made completely out of brick. Though fairly empty on the inside the building is recognizable from miles away by the tall belltower in front. The mayor's house lies directly in its shadow.
- Police and Fire Stations: The Police and Fire Stations are fairly average. Though there’s an elementary school field trip to the Police Station, most teens tend to steer clear of it.
Further south, Washington Blvd. twists out from the woods and into town. This street gathers the most income from tourists and those who are simply visiting the town.
- Allie’s Antiques: A small cluttered building, Allie’s Antiques is filled to the brim with ancient relics and things found in abandoned attics. The store is run by Alison Higgins, and she is rumored to be able to tell you anything you could possibly want to know about any of her items.
- Cherry On Top: This small but busy Ice Cream Parlor is covered from head to toe in pink. Another place both common among teens for a hang out and summer job, Cherry On Top prides itself on having the best ice cream in town.
- Weary Traveler’s B&B: Run by town newcomer Bianka Newman, Weary Travelers always seems to be busy despite Firesbrooke’s status as a small town. It houses careless adventurers and strangers alike, and has been know to provide free housing for families who lose power in the winter months.
- Java Drop: Java Drop is a much smaller coffee shop. Their prices are a bit higher than Main Street’s, but they have a much quieter and more homey environment, making it a popular study place for students.
To the east, Lake Ct. leads out from the residential district and traces around the school and a few smaller establishments.
- Firesbrooke General: Crowded but useful, this General Store has everything you could possibly need. From food, to medicine, to cards for you sister’s birthday, you name it, Firesbrooke General will have it.
- The Orchard: Once a pristine private high school, the Orchard was bought by a realtor who turned it into the 'mall' it is now. The Orchard is a collection of small shops, and few big brands (like a pizza hut and a macy’s), and a small bowling alley/minigolf/arcade popular with students.
- Firesbrooke Community High School
Firesbrooke Community High School (or FBC as students refer to it as) is a two story building, with a basement, field house, swimming pool, and fields for both football and soccer. It has two main entrances, one facing north, and one facing east. Most students who arrive by car are ushered through the the north entrance, and enter the building squished between the main office and the attendance office. The buses drop students off by the east entrance, and students pass through two glass door into the main cafeteria. The lower floor is home to the p.e, health, social studies, art, and english classes while the second floor houses the science, foreign language, and math departments. The nurse’s office and counseling center is located towards the center of the building and staircases for each floor are located on the east, west, and south sides of the building. Outside, the backside of the school faces the woods that surround the town while the front is landscaped with evergreens and small flowers.
Surrounding the majority of Firesbrooke is the large patch of woodland, untouched by most of mankind. Towering pine trees mix with sturdy oaks and maples, all casting long shadows on the forest floor below. Deer are commonly seen darting between trunks, and coyotes often time become a nuisance when they travel outside of the wilderness to prey on housepets. The popular teens of Firesbrooke have a secret hideaway deep in the forest on the edge of the lake. It is here that the host massive parties, far away from adult supervision. However, there is part of the woods that is still a mystery to many natives of the land. Hidden away under a massive and gnarled oak, a gateway waits for the waning moon.
There are a few important people in Firesbrooke, that everyone should know. (below is an ongoing list, feel free to add on with your characters or change one up to fit a backstory!)
- Garrett Richmond, local mayor
- Darryl Clegg, fire chief
- Joan Hackett, town sheriff
- Minerva Flynn, wealthy librarian/bookstore owner
- Bianka Newman, runs the bed & breakfast
- Fannie Rawlings, runs the local dinner
- Johnny Berger, known handiman, always helping people out
- Dani Hawes, principle of FBC
- Tristan Bird, history teacher at FBC and staff sponsor for the cryptid club
There are two realms of our planet. Two realities, two universes, two planes laid gently on top of one another. The first is the Realm of Sunrise, also called Earth by its citizens. This realm is ruled by science and discovery, always pushing for the future. However a second, more ancient realm exist; the Realm of Twilight. Here Näinimёk citizens fester in eternal twilight, pulling magic out of thin air. These people are born fairly similar to humans, they just inhabit the extremes. Their hair is either as silver as moonlight, or a dark as ink. Their eyes glow in the night. They could be long and spindly like a spider, or solid muscle. However, as they age and foster their connection with magic, they become more animalistic. Some ancient mages have fully transformed into pure arcanic creatures. Ages in the Realm of Twilight are strange as well. While an average human lives to around 80 years old, residents of Näinimёk live to around 600 years, more if they have an especially strong connection with the magic of their world. However, when they fall through into the Realm of Sunrise they age like humans, and likewise, when humans travel to the Realm of Twilight they age much slower than they usually do.
Magic in the Realm of Twilight works like it does in the storybooks. Witches and warlocks collect books of spells that work more like curses and charms than pyrotechnics. These spells require extensive ingredients, and their potency is wholly dependent on the skills of the caster. It for this exact reason that most young children start learning magic when they turn thirty. In terms of society, the Realm of Twilight is a collection of small towns and cities all controlled by one government: the Council of Mages. Travel between settlements is fairly common, though because there is always a danger of monsters the council has designated “highways” that are constantly guarded by the royal militia. Love is a lifetime commitment, and it is expected that a citizen only have one partner their whole life. They work side by side, and if they choose to raise a family, earn much respect within a community. Children are a bit of a rarity in the Realm of Twilight, and for that reason entire towns will help raise them.
The Realm of Twilight has one big issue: monsters. Creatures born from pure dark magic, intent on causing harm to everything they meet. Some use brute force, others are cunning in their torture. For ages citizens of Näinimёk have fought against these forces, both physically and magically. However, as more and more monsters cross between the realms, they pose a new danger to the secrecy of the second realm.
Näinimёk has always known about Earth. Their sister realm was simply written in the fabric of magic and reality. However, the Realm of Twilight has always kept their existence a secret. There is but one problem with this, crossing over. Occasionally the barrier between the two realms shifts and weakens, allowing for citizens of one realm to slip into the other. It used to be a rare occurrence, but this method of crossing realms has become more and more common in recent years. The only other known way of crossing over are Gates. Gates are permanent doorways between realms. Näinimёk citizens have done their best to map out all the gates they could find, struggling to hide them from the ever growing human population.
Before you start rping, there are a few thing to know about how The Forest will function.
- literacy. This is an advanced roleplay. While I don't expect anyone to write a novel, you will be expected to write 300 words per post (200+ when lacking inspiration or during dialogue. I get that it can be hard sometimes!) with proper spelling and grammar. Make sure that when you reply you actually advance the conversation, as it becomes really boring if you get stuck in the loop of simple responses to another person's questions. I also ask that you refrain from using text talk and abbreviations in roleplay. Please indicate when you are talking out of roleplay with brackets [] or parenthesis ().
- activity. Activity is crucial to any roleplay, and likewise I ask that you are on at least three times a week. This doesn't include chatting, however, unless you are waiting for a response. If you are going to be inactive for a long period of time, simply tell me or a moderator and we'll put you on hiatus and excuse you from this rule. If you are inactive without an excuse for two weeks you will receive a prompt to return. If you are inactive for three weeks with no response to the prompt, you will be deleted from the roleplay.
- relationships. Though this roleplay focuses a lot on relationships, I do ask that you proceed with some caution. Obviously keep romance pg, the ever-present **skip** is a wonderful tool to help you with this. Make sure you fly relationships by anyone else in it, as the last thing I want is anyone to feel pressured into a romance. Lgbt+ characters and romances are welcome here, and any discrimination outside of roleplay will not be tolerated.
- characters. Please keep characters realistic. Characters should be well-balanced and flawed, as it can be really easy to create a mary-sue when it comes to characters with powers. Everyone has a fatal-flaw. Everyone has a disadvantage, something that holds them back despite their greatest efforts. Also, just like no crazy hair colors with out hair dye, no third eyes, or wacky stuff like that. For major characters I do ask that you use your archetype in the character creation proceed, and my pms are open if you ever want to talk about character backstories or potential plots with them!
- forum rules. This should go without saying, but please follow all forum rules. The last thing we need is for the thread to be deleted because someone was being an idiot.
- have fun. The best rule. Just enjoy yourself. Be respectful of others and make this place a fun roleplay for everyone!
When it comes time for battles, we will use chance charts to determine the results of our characters action. There are five options: something good happens, something bad happens, something neutral happens, something very good happens, and something very bad happens. When you get a something good happens it generally means that your character lands and attack, dodges away from a monster's attack, or stabilizes a teammate. However, "good" changes from scenario to scenario to feel free to use loose interpretations on these suggestions! When you get a something bad happens it usually means your attack misses, you get hit by a monster attack, or something along those lines. When you get a something neutral happens it's usually an eye for an eye deal. You land an attack on the monster, but the monster also attacks you, you dodge a monster attack but hit your head on the rocks nearby, etc. When you get a something very good happens you can either defeat the monster, or do something of equal value. When you get a something very bad happens usually you get seriously injured or get put in a perilous position. Your chances of getting these in each round are as follows.
1st round (33%) | Rounds 2-4 (25%, 12.5%) | Rounds 5-6 (22%, 16%) | Rounds 7+ (20%) | something good happens | something good happens | something good happens | something good happens | something bad happens | something good happens | something good happens | something bad happens | something neutral happens | something good happens | something good happens | something neutral happens |

The Cryptid Club
There are twelve current members of FBC's cryptid club, a club dedicated to hunting down cryptids ("an animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated") in their hometown. Each member is a claimable character and has a key archetype selected to help with inspiration and character dynamics. Since I want characters to be a key role of this rp, I'll post below another list of needed character ideas (like if someone wants a boyfriend who's in the club or something)

S T E V I E
The Ruler
August 23rd was too early a date for students to be crowding the halls of Firesbrooke Community High School. School had just started three days ago, and as Friday loomed upon the congregation of teenagers, they remained in their unresponsive state. No one was happy to be back, and not even the teachers were happy about waking up for early morning classes. But as the weekend drew closer and closer, FBC began planning its first big tradition. Periods seven and eight would be dedicated not to classes, but to a club fair in which the new student body could see for themselves all the activities the high school had to offer. Naturally, most kids simply went home early.
Stevie Hackett used to be one of those kids. She would’ve gladly ditched if not for her new responsibility. As a junior, she now was responsible for FBC’s own Cryptid Club, a gathering of people so strange Stevie often found no reason as to why she cared for the club at all. It certainly wasn’t something she was proud of- hell, most days her friends would roll their eyes at “crazy Stevie who believes in bigfoot”. But there was some sentimental meaning to the club. It was the first club she joined as a freshman. Before soccer, before environmental club, before speech. Her brother had been a student leader then, and she would be lying if she said she wasn’t stressed about filling his shoes now that he’d graduated.
As the bell rang for fifth period, Stevie showed Mr. Bird her pass, and headed down to the main gymnasium. She found her booth tucked neatly in the corner, the box of flyers and decorations still resting upon it from this morning. For the next hour, she spent her time making everything look perfect. A plastic tablecloth here, some cool pictures there, flyers literally everywhere. She sighed, admiring her work as the other tables rushed to finish up.
She wasn’t sure who would show up to help her this afternoon. She’d been able to send out an email to all of the previous club members, encouraging them to come out and meet with possible new joiners. However, the Cryptid Club wasn’t known for being the most social group. If even one other person showed up, Stevie would color herself impressed. More likely, they’d just skip the entire event altogether.
Running a hand through her hair, the junior cursed her nerves. She wasn’t bad a public speaking, but there was something about a hundred kids walking by and judging you that didn’t sit well. Maybe if she was head of a more normal club, she would’ve been more composed. Maybe if the second student leader ever bothered to do anything, she’d have a partner in this chaos. Instead, she sat down in a chair that looked like it might fall apart of its own accord, and shot at text to Kayla.
‘You going to come today?’ It was simple and perhaps a bit needy, but Stevie didn’t dwell on it much. Kayla and her had been friends since way back, although there were never that close until highschool. And even then, she knew that despite everything Kayla wasn't a fan of the cryptid club. It has torn Stevie away from their other hangouts, she'd claim. Leave it to a bunch of made up monsters to tear a friendship apart. She doubted her friend would show up, but just having anyone to talk to would be a lifesaver.
Before she could send out more desperate pleas, the bell for seventh period rang. Slowly but surely, students started to filter in. The Club Fair had begun.
