Fallen God
”So after we fight off the ancient stone warriors of the jungle, all we have to do is scale the hidden wall of nightmares and sneak into the tomb of the lost and then we’ll find our treasure,” Halo explained with a grin as she looked out towards the small group of humans that she had gathered together.
Now, her journey didn’t only depend on the company of humans considering the fact that she had sent invites out to the other earth gods as well...though granted, it had been awhile since she had paid any of them a visit so her addresses might have been way off, but that wasn’t the point here.
The point was that she had lots of people lined up to adventure with her and this way she would never be lonely or bored enough for her thoughts to get ahead of her, it was the perfect plan.
Or so she thought.
As she waited for the group of human adventures to say something, she was able to watch as their faces fell and slowly, one by one, they began to back up.
”Listen, Hailey, you’re a nice person and all, but this is crazy and I think you might be crazy too, I gotta bail, sorry,” Andrew - a tall man with dark skin and a nearly bald head - explained, putting his hands up in mock surrender as he started to walk off.
Soon after him, everyone else muttered out their own excuses and before Halo knew what was happening she was standing alone.
Halo sighed, shoulders dropping as she watched them all leave, shuffling her feet. ”A’right fine, but you don't know what you’re missing mate, its gonna be so much fun!” She called out after them, hoping at least one of them would turn around and come back to join her, having suddenly changed their mind.
That did not happen and the figures soon got further and further away until they had completely left her sight.
Well, that was a bust.
Letting out a deflated sigh, Halo sat down on the small bench just outside the path that led into the jungle-esque terrain. It was a little disappointing that people just weren’t quite as up for adventure nowadays as they used to be, and while Halo hated to play the old woman card, she was going to blame technology and all this new “first world” stuff on that.
People were just too cozy now, they didn’t want to risk life and limb for adventure.
Which was fine.
No one should have to risk that much for her and people were great, they really were, they were just...they were so young and naive and she really ought to expect less from them.
After all, they were only human.
”No matter, I’ll still have plenty of company,” Halo mused to herself, nodding quickly as if to affirm that she was right.
Soon enough the other Earth Gods would show up and they’d all be able to go on an adventure together, just like in the good old days.
Mirage would definitely be here soon.
Aqua had confirmed that she would come as well, and there were plenty more that Halo was sure would show up even if they didn’t RSVP.
She just...she just had to wait for them to get here, that was all.
Halo looked over towards the path as it led further and further into the distance.
Soon everyone else would be here and they could get going.
She would only be alone with her thoughts for a few minutes at best.
Surely she could manage that.
Besides, her thoughts were great.
She could...she could think about that crossword puzzle she did this morning, or the show about the vampires she had seen on the plane ride over, or she could reminisce about the past - which she had a lot of - until her friends arrived.
Yeah, she could do that.
She had lots of options.
Halo’s brow furrowed together as she kept her gaze locked on the path, her backpack slumping down to her side.
It would be nice to go down this path again, after all it had been a long time since she was last here.
Then as if on command, the scene began to change right before her very eyes.
The trail signs and pole with a thing full of bags for dog feces deconstructed in front of her, path becoming less and less clear as if it had yet to fully form, rocks disappearing from sight, trees shrinking back into the ground and new ones sprouting out in their place.
Before she knew it, it was as if she had been here for the first time and here she stood, standing before an adventure in the making completely alone.
Except...no, not alone.
Someone was with her.
Looking to her left, Halo sent a glare towards the man standing next to her. ”I can’t believe you let them get hold of the one thing you have left from your god hood,” she sneered with a huff.
Igni growled in response, his eyes flickering with fire hidden within the burning amber color. ”I still am a god, falling changed nothing,” he declared stubbornly, stepping a little too close to Halo for her comfort.
Pushing him back with her hand, Halo snorted in response. ”Funny, I distinctly remember you coming to me to gloat when I fell, your exact words were ‘you were never good enough to be a god in the first place and now you never will be one again, you’re as useless as the dirt you were born from’, isnt that right, Igni?” She retorted dryly at the man.
In which he responded with an eye roll. ”That was different, now can we just stop talking about it and get my sword back?” He questioned rudely, arms folded as he gestured his head towards the trees looming in front of them.
Halo huffed in response, leaning forward as she stretched her arm out forward towards the trees. ”Gods first,” she quipped and with a grunt Igni pushed past her and into the unknown.
Halo rolled her eyes, following after him. ”I can’t believe I’m helping you with this, why do you even want your sword back anyways? You’re not a war god anymore, you have no use for it.”
Igni paused, hesitating for a second to look back towards her. ”...It...it still holds a lot of its power, if a mortal gets hold of it, who knows what it’ll do to them, it could drive them mad for all I know, I’m just trying to stop that from happening,” he responded before continuing on, thrashing the big, bushy leaves with a spear to make his own path.
Halo winced at the injustice to nature, crouching down to whisper apologies to the plants, helping them grow back their missing leaves. ”Well if you’re trying to be a better person, maybe you should stop hurting the jungle plants, they can help us more as a friend than as an obstacle,” she told him, gently kissing a leaf as she stood back up.
Igni simply grunted in response, though if anything he did drop his spear, continuing on without it instead.
Halo tilted her head to the side, watching him.
He was far from perfect, and she would never be able to forgive him for what she had done to her people.
But they were alone in this big world, it couldn’t hurt to give him the benefit of the doubt now and again.
Halo blinked rapidly as the scenery in front of her was replaced by the familiar benches and signs of the present as she pulled herself from her thoughts.
Inhaling sharply, she stood up and looked around, pacing slightly.
Hopefully the others arrived soon.
Halo would much rather not be left alone with her thoughts any longer.
Now, her journey didn’t only depend on the company of humans considering the fact that she had sent invites out to the other earth gods as well...though granted, it had been awhile since she had paid any of them a visit so her addresses might have been way off, but that wasn’t the point here.

Well, that was a bust.
