At that moment, Lightning shifted in her nest and lifted her head blearily before padding out and offering him her help. Maple echoed the inquiry, the amusement flashing in her eyes betraying the fact that she knew what his answer would be. The orange tom stiffened; was she enjoying this? βIβm fine,β he growled eventually. βYou need to take care of yourself before offering assistance to others,β he added, nodding at Lightning. Though her fur was ruffled with sleep, she looked nowhere near as bad as him, and he knew it, though he hated to admit it. Swiveling around, he fixed Maple with a fierce glare, daring her to comment upon his predicament.

Maple was, in fact, enjoying this.
She continued to grin when Flare finally responded to the other molly, biting back another snort as he skillfully commented on her 'just woken up' ruffled fur. It was honestly entertaining for her to watch solely because Flare was always so ready to direct his anger to someone and at this point she just found it comical. She caught his glare and returned it with a poor attempt to look clueless, as if trying to pretend that she didn't know what she was doing. "But Flare, who's going to pick off the hard to reach brambles if not her?" Maple asked with a faux inquisitive tone, the glint still shining in her green gaze.

Lightning rolled her eyes at the she-cat. How immature. Lightning wasn't always serious but she knew how it felt to be full of thorns! "Let me know if you want help." She murmured as she brushed bast the tom, tensing as their fur touched for only a moment. It also surprised her that she could walk normally now. 'The worst of the healing is over' she thought, glancing at her leg as she walked.
As Lightning padded past she she-cat she narrowed her eyes. "Stop acting like a kit." She growled before walking back toward where the creek was. She wondered if the other she-cat was still there? As she neared a different section of the creek, she crouched down to lap up some of the water. 'Why did you defend him you mousebrain! You aren't supposed to like them!' She thought miserably to herself. In a way she defended herself too so that made her relax more.
Just then she realized that it was past dawn now. Why was she still here? She needed to hunt before she left for sure. Did she need to say goodbye too? She shook her head. "Why would I."

Flare wished for nothing more than to sink his claws into Mapleβs pelt and wipe that ridiculous grin off her whiskers. βDonβt you worry about me,β he responded. She did have a point, though. How on earth was he going to disentangle the tendrils that clung to his spine? Heβd have to go somewhere secluded, for one. There was no way he was going to let anyone see his struggles.
To Flareβs mild surprise, Lightning defended him, scolding Maple and telling him again that he could ask him for help if he needed it before starting away. As she passed him, her fur brushed his the tiniest bit, but she had already left before he could comment. Lightningβs barely noticeable limp reminded him that he should head to the river and check out his own wound; he had forgotten about it, which was certainly a good sign. Without deigning to glance at Maple, he turned tail and padded away to make himself look decent in privacy, a thing which he had sorely been lacking.

Maple's fur bristled at Lightning's remark, her gaze narrowing at her as she brushed past Flame. "Yeah, sure." She responded off-handedly to darker she-cat, wondering when she finally decided she was above her. Since when was a bit of teasing soooo immature. Her tail flicks sharply to the side and she turns to watch Flame start to leave without saying anything else to her. That stung a lot more than she'd like to admit.
"Hey, at least take the sparrow with you. I brought it all the way here, don't just leave it for some predator." Maple huffed, calling out lot enough for him to hear.

Lightning sighed as she sat at the waters edge, away from the area where Dawn was and away from Maple's direction. Her tail was wrapped neatly around her paws as she gazed through the forest. It was almost time for her to hunt, she needed to eat something before she ran off, away from these cats. The tom popped back into her mind, why did she keep thinking of him! Stop thinking of him! You dont care about him and he sure doesn't give a care about you! She told herself over and over again.
Lightning let out a yawn before sighing, should she really leave? Those kitty-pets would probably need her help to stop them from getting eaten. She could definitely take care of herself, glancing at her wound. When she was fully healed she could. Even now, it was healed enough that she could fight if she needed. Why should I help them, they dont mean anything to me. She thought to herself as she watched the water ripple a little, as it tumbled over the rocks.

Dawn The she cat was trying to think of a good reason why she was heading back to the creek. To make sure the dog was gone, to get another gift for her Twoleg, to hunt for some mice. Anything but the truth: she wanted to see if the cats were still there. She had returned promptly to the cabin her Twoleg owned and offered her the shiny rock she had collected, but the treats and praise didn't fulfill her like they usually did. She had slept curled up tight in the nook behind her Twoleg's knee, only really half sleeping. She was up before the sun broke but remained laying there, processing the events that had happened yesterday. That dog fight was so scary. But the other cats were so brave and attacked the dog. She had never seen that before, and now she was deeply curious about them. Even the grumpy tom. She had made her way out as the sun rose higher in the sky, keeping alert for any scent of the cats while also thinking up an excuse for why she was back out there. She walked through her forest comfortably, not hiding the sound of her paw falls, wondering who she would see. If anyone.

Maple grumbled to herself and just left the sparrow there, not bothering go after Flare as she didn't see any point in wasting anymore energy on him. For the rest of the time she spent it exploring the territory, not really straying from the general area. This didn't seem like such a bad place, there seemed to be plenty of prey around and she could see herself growing friendlier with the kittypet, Dawn. Of course she didn't plan on becoming a kittypet herself, still dejecting the idea that her clan implanted into her from a very young age. Not that it would've been a problem since the twolegs that used to live near her territory had abandoned their place long before she was born. Twolegs were sort of an old elders tale, stories made up of the weird creatures to scare the kits into behaving.
After a while, Maple found herself having walked in a rather large circle as she ended up returning to the area where she had first found the trap, still curious as to where it'd come from. However, this time the cage was gone. The tabby frowns and wondered where it went, recalling that Flare said some twolegs might come by to pick it up. About to dismiss it and move on, a strange and foreign scent piqued her interest and Maple could sense movement in the surrounding forest. Not realizing how close it was, the brown and white she-cat didn't have much time to react when a couple of twolegs stumbled about, a new and unarmed cage being carried in one the beasts long and lanky appendages.
One of them notices her right away and speaks in a language that she couldn't possibly try and translate, but its booming voice made her fur stand up and she's immediately on the defensive, crouching down and making herself look bigger than she actually is. 'So this is what they look like' She thought to herself, her eyes darting between the two of them. Maple had no idea how to assess the situation, but a nostalgic type of fear shot through her, the same kind she felt when hearing the elders tell stories as a kit. Maple hisses and swipes her paw as the one not carrying the cage advances for her. She recognizes its movements as its huge paw goes for her scruff and suddenly she can move again. Maple lets out a warning yowl and strikes her paw out again, claws unsheathed, before turning and running as fast as she could. She's too focused on her speed and getting out of there as quick as possible that she doesn't dare look back to see if either of them are following her.
In a place so unfamiliar to her, her paws take her to the only familiar place that they know; The creek. Maple wasn't consciously trying to go there, just running on adrenaline at this point due to the encounter. Finally she wills herself to look back and to her relief sees that she wasn't followed. Slowing down a bit, Maple goes to turn her head again when a streak of orange crosses too close to her vision for her to react in time, slamming right into a body before she can really attempt to stop herself. Unbeknownst to her, and unfortunately for Flare, she'd run right into the tom that'd caused her so much frustration earlier.

Flare arrived at the clearing with the Twoleg trap; the fur on his hackles rose as he scented fresh Twoleg. They must have just gone and left. The trap remained in the center of the clearing, with its door wide open. The tom grabbed a stick and quickly triggered it again so the trap became harmless once again. As he stepped back as the trap snapped shut, his hind paw brushed against something soft. It was his sparrow; Maple must have abandoned it here.
He had just eaten; he might as well bury it for later. After finishing his task, he headed in the direction of the stream, still thinking about the Twoleg trap and why they mightβve left it there. His ears twitched as a memory suddenly flashed before his eyes; the first time, he had seen such a trap, as a young tom in Twolegplace.
That was the day after the one where his motherβs sister had chased him out of her den, claiming she had done enough for him. This was a different kind; the Twolegs left poisoned prey in the trap and came to check for animals that had died of it. His belly growling with hunger, he had dragged out the fat rat that the trap harbored and had been leaning down to take a bite when Scrap had barrelled into him, knocking him over and hissing in his face. βWhat are you doing?β Flare had stared back at his father eyes wide in shock when--
Oof! A furry bulk crashed into Flare, almost knocking him off his paws. Flare sprang, a furious screech ripping from his throat as he jumped onto his attacker, firmly anchoring all four paws onto his attacker, just a blur of fur in his fury, and started sinking his claws into the catβs pelt...

( ) Pain is all Maple felt after the collision, everything was happening so fast that she almost felt nauseous as her head tried to keep up. Feeling her body hit the ground and claws sink into her, Maple let out a yowl of pain before her instincts started to kick in. She didn't even give herself time to think as her body twisted, pressing her side into the ground so she could slide further underneath her attacker and kick her back legs up, her claws assaulting their soft underbelly. Hoping the attack would stun them long enough, Maple attempts to wiggle her way out from under her attacker. Shakily making her way to her paws and now facing her assailant, Maple goes to hiss a warning until she realizes that she recognizes this orange pelt.
"Flare?" Her defense goes down and she takes a slight pawstep back, any aggression in her stance or expression had melted away and now she just looked confused and concerned.

(You are hilarious lol )
Flare felt the catβs hind paws pummel his belly; he was about to retaliate when he really noticed the catβs familiar dark tabby pelt for the first time. Maple wriggled out from underneath him, scrambling her paws before whirling around with fire in her eyes, which quickly turned to confusion as recognition dawned. βFlare?β she questioned.
βWatch where youβre going, mouse-brain! How was I supposed to know it was you?β he hissed, his claws working the ground. Much to his surprise, guilt wormed in his belly. βI didnβt hurt you, did I?β he inquired rather gruffly.

Lightning perked her ears to the sound of ruffling in the bushes and talking. She got to her paws and walked over to see what the commotion was about only to see Flare and Maple ruffled up looking at each other in confusion. Lightning felt a prickle of jealousy inside of her but tried to push it away. "What is going on?" She asked, a puzzled expression on her face. The scent of twoleg made her fur rise, she unsheathed her claws but her gaze remained on the two cats in front of her. She noted that Flare's pelt was smooth again, but they both looked on edge about something.

(iβm glad someone thinks so. also iβm on mobile so sorry for lack of format)
Maple felt all of her emotions hit her at once; the fear from her encounter with the twolegs, the shock from colliding with Flare, and rush from their brief fight. Tears stung the corner of her eyes and she stared at Flare, trying to process everything and feeling stupid for starting to cry. βFlare I,β She starts then shakes her head, a sob wracking through her body. βYeah Iβm, Iβm fine. Iβm sorry youβre right. I just, they tried to grab me and I tried to run away. Then I ran into you and-β Maple cuts herself off and takes a couple steps towards the tom. βFlare Iβm sorry I didnβt mean, I didnβt see you and I didnβt know it was you. I wouldnβt have attacked you if Iβd known, Iβm so sorry.β The words sort of just tumble out of her mouth as she tries to get everything out all at once, as well as trying to blink to blink back the tears. She barely registers Lightningβs presence, too focused on herself at the moment and trying to calm herself down.

Lightning watched the tom for a moment, realizing how uncomfortable he was. "Giving you two some time alone." She muttered, her tone edged with a small amount of jealousy. She flicked her ears uncomfortably but made eye contact with him. Why should she care? And why does he carer where she has been. Her eyes flickered with a slight pang of hurt as she diverted her gaze. Stop acting like a helpless kit! He doesnt care about you, and you shouldnt care! She thought to herself.

Oh, great. What have I done now? Maple was crying and babbling nonsense because of him, and he had no idea how to deal with it. Lightning started to back away, muttering something about leaving them alone.
βWhat? No, donβt go! Maybe you can helpβ¦β he trailed off, gesturing to Maple with his tail. βLook. Iβm sorry, okay? It was me who attacked you. I didnβt know it was you. So...sorry. Maybe you can stop crying now?β he meowed awkwardly, glancing helplessly at Lightning. Without consciously thinking about it, Flareβs paws brought him forward and his tail curled around to rest on Mapleβs flank for a single heartbeat before he whisked it away. Again he looked pleadingly at Lightning; she was a she-cat who would know better than him how to deal with her genderβs sensitivity.

(βher genders sensitivelyβ iβm DEAD!! π)
Mapleβs heart jumps in her chest when she feels Flareβs tail fall on her flank, her head rising to try and catch his gaze. Was he actually attempting to comfort her? That came as a complete shock to her and Maple honestly didnβt know how she felt about it. In all honesty she was pretty impressed and a little touched that he would go to such lengths, even if the contact was brief. She really appreciated the fact that he wasnβt taking the time to berate her, and actually apologized instead. βNo, Iβm fine,β Her eyes flicker to Lightning. βIβm fine.β Maple tried to reassure them, taking in a deep breath before continuing. βI ran into the twolegs and one of them tried to grab me. Iβd never really seen them before, and running into you didnβt help.β At βyouβ Maple looked back at Flare. βIβm sorry, Flare, I really didnβt mean to run into you. I shouldβve been looking where I was going but I was just so...scared.β The tabby nearly flinched, not wanting to admit her fear but expressed it anyways.

Lightning let out a sigh after the sight that unfolded in front of her. Her heart sunknin her chest at the way Flame comforted Maple. She opened her mouth to help but it all happened so fast she didn't have a chance to say anything. She wasn't sure why she cared. She shouldn't. 'So be it if they want each other', she thought miserably. "I don't know what to say." She stated, she met the toms gaze, hurt flickering in hers before turning away. "I have to go hunt." She murmured quietly before padding off, her head drooping slightly. 'I have to go hunt before I leave.' She thought to herself, going in the opposite direction of the twoleg stench.

Maple continued to take deep breaths until her fur laid flat and she was no longer crying. still so embarrassed that she cried in front of them. She nods slowly at Flare, catching on to just how uncomfortable he was. Her gaze flashes to Lightning, tilting her head at the mollyβs hurt expression. Maple had to think for a moment, making sure she didnβt say anything to have offended the dark she-cat. βUm, good luck.β She called out to Lightning, staying quiet for a moment before heaving a sigh and casting her green eyes at Flare. βYour pelt looks nice...β Her voice trails off before she frowns. βIs your stomach alright? I hope I didnβt hurt you too much.β

Why is Lightning looking so sad? Did I do something wrong? Flare wondered as he watched the receding she-cat. Again, this was exactly why didnβt deal with cats. When he spoke to them only when needed, sprinkling in plenty of smart remarks, everyone kept their distance. Now that he had ventured into the realm of...of what? Civility? When he had actually looked past his own nose and stopped focusing on defending himself, which had certainly been necessary in Twolegplace, there were all these problems that had emerged, their solutions unfathomable to him. Relationships were a delicate thing, he realized, and it was going to take much more than teeth and claws to solve them.
Flare blinked, surprised at himself. Where had these deep thoughts come from? And what was he thinking about, anyway? He was going to live alone in the forest with no need to interact with any cats and concern himself with these mysteries. He was interrupted from his thoughts when Maple spoke to him. What does she mean, my pelt looks nice? Is she talking about the fact that I finally managed to get those thorns out?
βDonβt worry about it,β he grunted in regards to his belly. A few clumps of lost fur never hurt anyone.

Lightning sighed as she walked away from them, she ignored Maple's remark. 'I just need to hunt and get out of here' she thought to herself. As she padded through the forest she came across the scent of another teoleg. It was a lot more stale so she didn't mind as she walked through the bracken.
As she tried to get the scent of prey, she had a sudden scent of metal from the Twolegs. Letting out a hiss, she head something spring behind her. Spinning around she found herself trapped in a metal wire box. She growled and smashed against the side to try to break out. 'As if thid is happening.' She thought to herself. She needed to be quiet. She didn't need the other two freaking out. She could hear Flame now saying how stupid she was.

Maple gave a small smile, nodding at his remark. A sort of awkward air fell around them and she honestly didnβt really know how to feel about it, so far the two had only bickered so now with the both of them being civil she didnβt really know what to do.
βAlright, then I wonβt.β Her green eyes glanced around and she felt the tip of her tail twitch. βSo, whatβs next for you? You gonna settle down around here, make a proper nest instead sleeping under thorny bushes?β Maple lightly teased, trying to make things a little more lighthearted.

Lightning spat as she got up again, a small cut was bleeding on her shoulder but it wasnt too bad. She hated this! She needed out, she needed to get food and she needed to leave. She let out a snarl at the sound of rustling bushes, still a small distance away but she caught the scent of twolegs. Should she call for help? She hesitated for a moment before she bashed against the metal where it closed her in, trying to get it open. Lightning felt the cage roll once. Getting to her paws again, she let out a frustrated yowl.

Not that the question should've come as a surprise to Maple, but she hadn't thought about it as much as she probably should've. She blinked slowly and shrugged. "I'm not sure to be honest. I was planning on continuing through but I've been thinking about staying for a while longer." She admitted to him. Maple fell silent for a moment, sighing softly before turning towards the tom. "Flare, I know we haven't really started off on the right paw, and I'm sure you're no where close to trusting me, but if you wanted to maybe you'd think about joining me?"

Lightning hissed as the scent grew stronger, she knew the twolegs were coming back to see if they had anything. What would they do with her? Panic began to rise inside of her, she shifted so that she was pressed against the very back of the cage. Lightning's breathing began to quicken as her eyes went wide. How was she supposed to get out of this! Maple and Flame would be long gone now, and calling out would make the twolegs come faster. I cant get out. She thought to herself.
