Lapping weakly at the herbs as they were provided to her, grimacing at the particularly bitter taste as she forced them down with a pained gulp. In truth the queen had more pressing matters to be concerned with rather than the fact her herbs had a disagreeable taste, she moaned long and low as her contractions only intensified to the point of being unbearable. She tore her fangs through the branch offered to her with a snarl. “There is nothing natural about what I’m feeling,” she responded through gritted teeth when a break in the contractions offered the opportunity to catch her breath. I see why medicine cats don’t have kits if they know this is what happens to the mother, she thought bitterly. Making a mental reminder to take some of her mates pelt for her nest for putting her through all of this to bring his kittens into the world. Dawnthistle was a proud warrior and a fine one, but she would rather have faced a thousand foes than she would face the pain of kitting right now. Her eyes widened as she released an all mighty howl of pain that echoed through the stony den. And with the agony of her most recent contraction, the first kitten slipped into the soft moss between her hind legs. The newborn creature letting out a pitiful mewl of hunger.

——- Barkpool - Foraging Foothills - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Barkpool looked down at his catches proudly, and stood as he waited for Wolfstar’s final verdict with twinkling eyes. Yes, maybe his prey was a bit older, but at least they had meat on their bones! A nice bounty during this season if he had to say so. Bouncefire also did nicely with his two pieces of prey, but... come on! He was clearly favored by Wolfstar, being his mate and such.
Looking up up at the overcast sky, he smiled slightly even in the gloomy leaf-bare weather. Then he heard Wolfstar speak. It seemed that the jury was out on him and Bouncefire, but the leader quickly made a point that his prey was far superior, and before Barkpool could challenge this he sprinted away.
”Oh, come on!” He exclaimed with a playful roll of his eyes, picking up his two mice and running as fast as he could after Wolfstar, bounding across the Foraging Foothills until he nearly caught up with the large tom. His tail and fur swished in the wind but thankfully his thick pelt made him feel comfortably at home (even in leaf-bare). It was good to have a bit of fun in such times, times where he was forced to think about things that were far more serious.

Wheatpaw
"Never give up on your dreams! One day, they will come true." Nip the...? Do...? What! Wheatpaw was a trembling ball of nerves as she stood beside her mentor, next to the queen who howled in a dirge of agony. Her first thoughts on this new experience... It was loud, and... Really gross! But if she was going to be a medicine cat, she had to tough through it, and she couldn't show any discomfort. A healer's job was to comfort, as well as help, so Wheatpaw managed to keep a neutral expression.
When the first kitten came, Wheatpaw did as instructed. She quickly, though with great care, pulled the kitten towards her. She looked at the kitten, confused of where she was supposed to nip, but found it and quickly nipped at it. The kitten drew a quick breath. Wheatpaw licked up the kitten's chest, helping it take breaths that were closer together. "It's okay!" She called. A surge of pride welled in her chest. She! She helped deliver a kit!
The tiny kitten squirmed with life, it's entire body shaking as it let out the loudest mewl it could. It was so small, so precious... Wheatpaw tucked the kitten besides it's mother's stomach, who curled into her soft fur.

Dustwhisker - Camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
The medicine cat sighed at Dawnthistle’s disagreeable tone, and continued to stand by the queen as she suffered through her contractions. Feeling her fur stand up at Dawnthistle’s pained yowls, Dustwhisker took a deep breath. It felt like she had been here for years and it must have felt even worse for the mother-to-be, but suddenly with one great heave the first kit gently emerged onto the moss.
Dustwhisker blinked softly and let out the breath she had been holding. She gently bent down and looked at the tiny creature with amazement. It mewled, and her eyes softened. It wasn’t every day that you got to see this. She also noticed that Wheatpaw did as she had instructed promptly and smiled.
“Great job, Dawnthistle. You powered through amazingly and the kit looks beautiful,” Dustwhisker mewed. “Now take a few breaths, just be calm. More kits will come but I’m not sure how many. If you survived the first, the others should be even easier,” she added quickly, her fur flattening in a temporary moment of peace.
“And Wheatpaw. Good job. More to come, but you’re experienced enough by now.”

Bouncefire
"I always like to start the day off on the right paw!" "You rotten little-" Bouncefire cut himself off however, as he realized he was the last one standing in the clearing. His fur burned with adrenaline, with the kit like sensation of thrill and fun. He quickly darted his head down and picked up his prey, clamping it in his jaws before he tore away, kicking up dirt as he left. His heart burst as he broke into a fast sprint, his fur streaming along behind him. He looked like an ember blazing through the forest.
He caught up to Barkpool first, hot on his paws. "HEV-SLOWV-DONV!" He yelled behind a mouthful of fur and feathers. His words hardly sounded like any sort of language. Barkpool was quick for being so big! His legs must have had as much muscle as his arms. But, Bouncefire, being smaller and more built for bursts of speed, had caught up to him quick, and was on set to outpace him. He just didn't know if he could before they reached camp.
Bouncefire narrowed his eyes and lowered his head, his paws thumping across the forest floor. Just a little faster! He managed to align himself beside Barkpool, looking at him with a bright, playful look twinkling in his green gaze. He then lowered his head again and tried to run faster. Wolfstar wasn't too far ahead!

Barkpool - Out of camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Barkpool ran as fast as he could, hoping that his weight wouldn’t drag him down as much as it might have suggested. Purring, he charged ahead until realizing that Bouncefire had already caught up.
“Wha-?” He exclaimed (slightly muffled from the mice dangling from his jaws) with surprise, sprinting as fast as he could. His paws thundered across the terrain. Bouncefire was quite the nimble and quick tom there... more so than Barkpool might have expected. But was the other tom’s endurance up to par with his? He sure hoped not, and a boost of confidence sent him into the very slightest bit of a lead.
Barkpool turned his head, fur flying into his eyes. As he ran, his eye quickly opened and closed in a cheeky little wink. He made sure that Bouncefire was watching, then turned his head back to focus on Wolfstar in front of him. The well-muscled leader had a head start and was still powering on nicely.

Panting heavily in the aftermath of the first of her kits, the calico rested her head exhaustedly across her paws with a quiet whimper. Energy seeping from her with every breath she drew in, there was barely a moment in which she could catch her breath as her contractions soothed for a beat or two she bared her fangs with a growl when the newborn was settled at her tensing stomach. She had enough to worry about without having to deal with the tiny newborn right now, but that was when a minor miracle happened. Dawnthistle's sharp feature softened at the sight of her newborn daughter. The scrap of fur's pitiful mewls sparked a warmth in her heart, a mother's instinct to care and love for her kittens that even the sharp tongued Queen wasn't infallible to. She lowered her nose to lick the kitten across the ears in gentle greeting, Dawnthistle managed a rather quiet. "Hello there, little one," before slumping back into her nest with a further groan of pain. The kittens weren't being easy on her, and soon she was in the heavy throes of labour once again. Bearing down on her branch again, slightly bloodied tail flicking from side to side as she pushed with all of her might. She released a hefty breath and ceased pushing with the fading contraction, eyes dull with a mixture of pain and exhaustion. She looked to the medicine cat's with a weak grumble, apparently the softness earned by her kitten hadn't spread to others. "I don't think medicine cats should be allowed to comment about pain right now," she grumbled very almost in amusement. It was beginning to feel like her suffering would never end, and Dawnthistle was weakening because of it.

Despite his larger size meaning he wasn't especially quick footed, his large lungs and massive stride meant with reasonable headway he could keep chase with reasonable capability. However, his ears quickly caught the sound of his mate and clanmate catching up with unfortunate speed, flicking his tail as he forced himself to continue going. Soon his breaths coming out in pants but he continued his bounding pace as long as he could manage, eyes narrowed with concentration. For the most part merely enjoying the exhilaration of the race, rather than the need to win. Though he would by no means have complained about the latter, it would have been a sweet addition to what had been a rather enjoyable hunting expedition. But Wolfstar was quickly realising that there was no way he could continue this speed until they reentered camp, at least not without playing... dirty. On a normal day it wasn't something he might have contemplated, but even the Clan leader could offer up surprises, on occasion. Purposefully allowing his pace to slow, if only by a beat or two. The leader allowed his gaze to linger on his mate in silence for a moment, concentrating not on the race this time but what could be described more as a stalk. Allowing his stance to stiffen and in the next heartbeat, the handsome leader had pounced in the next. Paws colliding with his mates muscled rump, the tom rolled upon the landing and skidded with him. Allowing the momentum to take the pair skidding through the dirt, though at least the muscled leader was kind enough to manouvre himself so he landed on the ground first. Not wishing his playful gesture to cause his loved on pain inadvertantly. Returning to his paws, though allowing a tickling gesture between his mate's ears with a chuckle before lunging forward again with a scatter of paws. Hoping his heartbeat of distraction wouldn't mean he failed to catch up on Barkpool, if not at least he seemed to have assured second place.

Dustwhisker - Camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Dustwhisker chuckled. “I guess I shouldn’t comment about it, you’re right,” she mewed light-heartedly, about to turn around to see Wheatpaw until she realized that Dawnthistle looked thoroughly worn out. Of course it was completely normal for this to happen but... a medicine cat didn’t just have the job of bringing all the herbs and taking care of the queen. A medicine cat was also obligated to give some moral support, if Dustwhisker was not wrong.
”But hey, remember this: you’ve got to be strong for your future kits. You’re a mother, Dawnthistle! A mother of precious life. While you’re kitting, don’t forget that,” she quickly mewed to Dawnthistle, hoping that it didn’t sound too cheesy. Another one of her responsibilities was to distract the kitting queen from any pain until the next kit came, so what better way to do this?
Now... what might possibly make her patient feel a bit better...? Mainly pain-killing herbs like poppy seeds would not work on a queen. Dustwhisker’s suddenly brightened, and she quickly ran over to the herb storage. A few seconds later her paw deftly hooked out a clump of raspberry leaves and she promptly deposited them in front of Dawnthistle.
“Eat. It might ease your journey a bit,” Dustwhisker suggested nervously.

Barkpool - Out of camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Barkpool slowed his strides slightly as to pace out his strength for the remainder of the run, but he hoped that wouldn’t put him too far behind. He enjoyed the feeling of the wind in his fur and the ground underneath his paws. The excitement of racing helped too, and he was determined to win. He noticed that Wolfstar was getting slower, and wondered if the leader might finally be tiring.
Suddenly he heard a noise from behind him and whipped his dark, furry head around to see what was going on. A little chuckle escaped from his mouth as he saw Wolfstar pounce playfully on Bouncefire to slow him down. The leader then leaped to his paws and continued to run, reminding Barkpool that he had to do the same at a slightly faster pace than what he was doing at the moment. Barkpool was now in the lead after Bouncefire had been taken down, and now he only had one opponent to seriously worry about. He tossed his head back and kept a steady pace.

Grateful for anything that might have even remotely eased the agonising process the queen was facing, she lapped at the presented leaves as though a starving hawk presented with a dead mouse. She groaned, settling down into her nest with a loud grunting sound tugging free of her lips. Restlessly circling her nest for a heartbeat, attempting to use the heartbeat of no contractions to find a more comfortable position to birth in, the queen took careful pains to avoid trampling over her newborn kitten. Who merely mewed with dissapointment when its mother's warmth left it. But Dawnthistle quickly settled back down as the pain returned to her veins, somewhat refreshed with strength. The queen bore down heavily with a pant, until finally something gave and with a rush of fluid, a second kitten wrenched into the nest behind her. Drawing a hefty scream from the mother for her efforts to ensure it arrived safely. Flattened to the ground, her coat stuck to her frame with sweat making it apparent just how skinny the shecat had grown with the onset of leafbare. For a moment Dawnthistle didn't move except for the shaking of contractions against her rounded belly. Dawnthistle fought hard to catch her breath, flicking her ears uncertainly to the medicine cat at her words of encouragement. The calico had never felt as helpless in her life, but now it wasn't only her life on the line. She had kits to care for, and if she hesitated now her final kitten might not make it to take its first breath. The queen exhaustedly lifted her head, taking the newest kitten by the scruff of the neck and taking it to her side. Having learnt from the medicine cats what needed to be done, the new mother carefully freed her newest born from its sac and rasped her tongue across its face in exhausted greeting. Before collapsing back into the nest with a hefty sigh, the pain worsening quickly once more but so exhausted the screams were stolen from her lips before she could even make the sound. "I don't know how much more of this I can take," Dawnthistle admitted with a weak whimper. It was rare that anyone saw the dappled shecat so vulnerable, but in that moment of agony the new mother looked terrified.

Dustwhisker - Camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Dustwhisker knew that Dawnthistle was gradually weakening, and her sharp tongue was softening. This was the only time that she had seen this strong queen in such a vulnerable state and it surprised her. She supposed that everybody was weak sometimes but strength always stemmed from the vulnerability and weakness. Ah, how strong you had to be if you were to take the responsibility of motherhood... She respected anyone that took the challenge.
Suddenly in the blink of an eye the next kit was born, with a lot of work on Dawnthistle’s part. It gently slid onto the moss and Dawnthistle quickly nipped the birth sac to give the kit room to breathe. Dustwhisker smiled softly. She was learning how to be a mother, and even through the pain in her eyes Dustwhisker could see the love.
“Great, you were so strong and just pushed through. I know it might seem like you can’t take any more, but please... no herb cure in the world will help with the way you’re feeling right now and I need you to continue with this strength. If you’ve dealt with it the past two times, you can do it more. I promise, it’s on my word, all mothers have had to deal with this,” she quickly replied to Dawnthistle’s worried and weak mew. Maybe Dustwhisker didn’t know how it felt to have kits but she could at least help...

Closing her eyes with a quiet whimper, she drew together everything she could find as best as she were able, flanks shuddering with the effort of drawing in breath. Her gaze fixed on the two tiny kittens curled close to her heaving sides. I can't leave them behind, she would never leave her kittens motherless. Not if she had anything to do with it, and all of it was upon her own shoulders now. No one could help her, only her own strength no matter how it felt like it were fading from her veins with every passing heartbeat. Groaning loudly, fangs flashing as she heaved with everything she could give. Even as the contraction passed she continued her forceful efforts, she could feel the movements of her remnant kit beginning to weaken. No matter how it hurt she wouldn't let the kitten give up the fight before it even had the chance to take in its first breath. Dawnthistle let out an agonsied wail, growing more and more frustrated as it seemed no matter how hard she tried, the kitten seemed to be refusing to be born. Still she persisted in spite of the unborn kittens insistent on being as difficult with its mother as it could, her teeth flashed in the dim light of the medicine cats den, as at last with a final heave. The tiny kitten slithered into the world beside its mother and littermates. Yet this time the calico didn't move to greet her newest born. She didn't seem to even flick her gaze in the tiny, wretched creatures direction. The silver tabby was tiny, nearly half the size of both siblings and not as well developed it would seem. And the mother wasn't in much of a better state.

Dustwhisker - Camp - 🇳ᴇcʀᴏᴅ🇦🇳cᴇʀ 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 ꕤ
Dustwhisker was worried. Admittedly, this one was worse than the previous kits... she could practically feel Dawnthistle’s pain as the queen heaved and hissed, and she felt unnaturally worried: something a medicine cat should not be. Her ears stung with every wail the queen emitted. It was almost an eternity until the suffering ceased, and Dawnthistle fell mostly silent. A tiny, pebble-like silver kit emerged and mewled weakly.
Dustwhisker waited for a moment in case Dawnthistle was to nip off the birth sac herself, but the queen was unmoving. She carefully bent down and did it, then looked at the weak figure in front of her.
“Dawnthistle, are you alright? Here,” she pushed the soaking wet moss towards Dawnthistle, “you can drink. I... I’m worried about that kit though. She’s a bit small. You did amazing, I know that was tough...” Sighing with relief, Dustwhisker gently touched her nose to her weak patient’s forehead.
She quickly rushed to the herb stores for a moment again and searched frantically for some honeycomb. It was hard to harvest, but gave those who had a bit temporary energy.
“Maybe some of this too,” Dustwhisker whispered quietly, pushing a sticky yellow morsel in front of the relatively quiet queen. She tried to hide her worry with a softer tone, and bent down to lick the underdeveloped silver kit to stimulate better breathing. Her heart felt like it was beating too fast.

Barely moving herself as she desperately tried to recatch her ragged breaths, eyes like lead as she fought to keep them open in order to tend to her newborn kittens. Craning her head weakly to look at the newest addition to her litter, her eyes narrowed a shade at how tiny the pitiful creature looked. Hooking the kitten with her long, dappled leg. The new mother dragged the stoney furred shekit close to her belly with great caution, as though concerned the slightest touch might break the newborn in half. The kitten looked awfully fragile, more a mouse than a kitten. Trying to tuck the kitten into the soft down of her thick belly fur. Rasping her tongue exhastedly across the three newborns, her eyes half closed as she worked to warm the newborns. Listening to their tiny mewls until they found their way to her teats, latched on and began to contently suckle in the warmth of their mother's adoration. "If Snakehiss as much as ever mentions another litter," the exhausted queen spoke after a moment. Sinking into her nest to leave the tiny kittens in peace to take their first drinks. "Remind me to claw his ears off," she whispered with a weak smile on her expression. StarClan only knew how long this streak of good nature would laugh in the sharp tongued warrior, so one had best make the most of it. "Though," she grumbled as though admitting something to herself. "I must admit they are rather sweet little things."

Wheatpaw
"Never give up on your dreams! One day, they will come true." Sweet, warm relief... Wheatpaw relaxed her entire body, her ears ringing from the queen's screams, but it was all finally over... Wheatpaw watched her mentor treat Dawnthistle with such kindness, admiring how she treated her patient with respect, and affection. The little golden tabby wanted to be just like her. Wheatpaw purred and pressed her nose gently, almost timidly to Dawnthistle's shoulder. "You did great Dawnthistle! You'll be a great mother." She had a bright, enthusiastic smile on her face.
Like the others, the medicine cat's apprentice was also worried about the small grey kit, but she didn't have the kind of knowledge that Dustwhisker did. She just thought that the kit was small! "We can help you back into the nursery any time you wish, but you can stay here until you're feeling strong again."
