Theo rushed into the precinct, late for the start of his shift. He wished he could have had a valid reason but, honestly, he just slept in. He was normally a little bit late, but this was late even for him. And he’d dropped the bagel he’d bought on his way to the office so now he was pretty much just tired and depressed over the loss of a perfectly good bagel.
The young man could see that Captain Ellis was already in his office, and so he hoped he could get quickly to his desk without being seen. Everybody was hard at work, or so it seemed. Ruiz was sitting at her desk, in deep concentration as she typed. She’d been taking more desk work and low-profile work in the aftermath of the trial, but things seemed to have cleared up and so she was hoping to be back to normal soon. Even Lexi was working at her computer, though her phone was still in sight. She would not doubt check it periodically.
So the detective moved quickly and quietly, hoping to go unnoticed by the Captain working in his office, to take a seat at his desk. He’d get some last bits of paperwork out of the way and then head out on a new case. If he spent time working a case out of the office hopefully the Captain wouldn’t notice that he’d ever really been late at all. That was really his only hope at this point because Captain Ellis notices everything.

He had been watching the clock, half paying attention to the paperwork on his desk but struggling to focus on anything productive. He wanted a coffee but couldn't be bothered to go and make one, since the one he had purchased earlier had been dashed across the sidewalk after barely a mouthful. He glanced up from the forms before him, a movement in the bullpen beyond catching his eye. Danton. Late, later than usual. The young detective had been improving his time management skills, not quite to the Captains high standard but better than he had been. Today however Ryan wasn't about to allow the tardiness to slip past him. He knew that Theo was trying to slip in unnoticed, he could sense the occasional glance's in the direction of his office. The next time Theo turned to look towards him he was no longer at his desk, but a shadowy figure standing in the doorway. "Danton" HIs tone wasn't particularly raised, but there was a sharpness to it that indicated his displeasure. That one word was enough to plunge the Bullpen in to uncomfortable silence, only the shrill of a phone piercing the quiet. "Late, again. Disappointing." It certainly wasn't the most colourful scolding he had ever given the young detective, and yet the tone made it seem far more serious. "Since Detective Danton seems to think time is not important you can all spend some of it cleaning your desks. A sloppy environment leads to sloppy detective work." He glanced about him at the desks littered with the detritus of the working day. "Look at this place, half eaten food. Crumpled papers, pictures of your families."
"What's wrong with pictures' Asked Beth, who had been sitting quietly, unnerved by this new mood of the Captains. He rounded on her and she wished she hadn't said anything.
"If you love someone you'll remember what they look like" He turned back towards his office. "Get to work." A final barked order before shutting the door with just a little too much force.

Theo has almost jumped out of his skin when he heard a sharp voice calling his name and looked up to see the Captain looking at the door to his office rather than at his desk. How did he move so quietly? How did he just...appear places?
He had assumed he was just in for a scolding, but apparently every officer in the bullpen was about to get yelled at. Just great. Theo had noted how strange the Captain’s behaviour was, however, and he planned to get to the bottom of whatever was bothering him.
There was an audible groan from the other detectives in the office, and one the Captain left Danton felt a punch to his shoulder. It was Ruiz as she passed him on the way to the trash can. It hadn’t been intended to be painful, but Ruiz kind of didn’t know her own strength.
“Nice one, idiot,” Ruiz said “You’d better not get us in trouble with him again, because I’m not kidding when I say I’ll cut you. I’m in here doing desk work, I’ll bear the brunt of this all day now.”
“Relax, Val,” Theo said as he cleared wrappers off his desk “clearly something’s bothering him.”
“Yeah, you,” interjected Lexi from her desk
“I’m going to talk to him and get to the bottom of this,” Theo said, choosing to ignore Lexi’s comment
Val shot a concerned look towards Beth, knowing the Sergeant too was tied to her desk and the two of them would be effectively stuck with the angry captain.
But Theo was already in the Captain’s office. He’d knocked, of course, because if he didn’t he feared the Captain may actually kill him.
“Captain, something seems to be bothering you,” Theo began “and I’m a great listener. What’s happening?”

(I made it so the Captain can refuse to talk about it so Theo and Beth have to figure it out)
“You did,” Theo nodded “but I think we can both agree that my desk is as clean as it’s ever going to be right now, it’s a black hole basically. But I’m here to stop Ruiz carrying out another of her threats, which at this point are more like promises, honestly, because I totally believe her.”
He listened to the Captain’s next words and sighed
“If this were a Disney movie you’d be Ursula right now. Look, Captain, sarcasm isn’t a good look on you. I know when something’s bothering you, and I know it’s not me. First of all, it seems to be causing you pain to sit down in your chair. Secondly, the sarcasm. Thirdly, you punished the entire squad for me being late. You’d never punish the rest of the squad for my mistakes normally, because I’m in trouble way too often for that to be practical.”
He paused, running a hand through his hair
“Sarge is probably the better person to do this... ugh. But okay, look, I’m here to help you turn that... not-frown... upside down. And if you don’t tell me what’s wrong, I’m going to figure it out myself. I’m a detective, and I don’t have a case right now. I have all the time in the world, Captain, and you know it. Well, I mean, when I say ‘myself’, I mean I’ll probably take the Sarge with me. So not myself. But you get the gist.”

Theo didn’t say anything to the Captain as he berated him, because there was nothing to say. The Captain was right in the end, Theo supposed, but the detective wasn’t about to let that deter him, though he probably should. He cared about Ryan in some strange way, even if (as the Captain said) they weren’t friends. Theodore kind of wanted to be friends with him, for what it was worth.
“Alright,” Theo said as he headed to the door, his voice quiet but not subdued. He was determined still.
After all, when the Captain cancelled overtime (which earned Theo more than a few glares) he had made this whole thing Theo’s business. By punishing Theo’s colleagues and friends for something that wasn’t their fault, the Captain has officially made this Danton’s business. He was going to figure this thing out.
“We all make mistakes, Sarge,” Theo said to Beth at her comment about making him more angry, before adding (in response to the comment about calling him Ursula) “I did, and he is. I stand by it.”
He paused for a moment, sighing.
“Look, Sarge, I messed up, I know. But something is bothering the Captain and I want to know what it is. Don’t you want to help me find out? We could fix this whole thing, reverse the damage I caused and get the Captain back to his emotionless, robotic self.”

Theo couldn’t help but smile at her little joke, but there was no time to dwell because Beth was asking him if he really thought it’d be a good idea.
“I mean, probably not. But the way I see it he’s unlikely to get much angrier, plus we both need that overtime.” Theodore responded, trying to encourage her
She seemed to agree, saying she needed the overtime and then eventually agreeing to help. Theo flashed her a grateful grin, the kind of cheeky grin that generally helped him get away with pretty much anything.
“Okay, here’s what I think,” Theo said “he wasn’t in a mood like this yesterday, and he already seemed in a bad mood when I came in, because my lateness doesn’t usually bother him as much as that. That means something happened between him leaving work last night and getting here this morning. I suggest we get as much information about his movements between last night and this morning as we can, starting with what we can glean from the people in this bullpen. Ruiz is always here as early as the Captain, but her shift ends before he leaves. There’s only one person in this precinct who can’t leave until the Captain does.”
His gaze slid to Lexi, who was sitting behind her desk filing her nails

"You were later than usual, but I agree. I think you have given him much better things to actually be angry about." Lots of things that genuinely justified anger, but surprisingly Captain Ellis was actually quite tolerant of the nonsense that seemed to prevail in the 99. Her gaze shifted in the direction his did, towards Lexi, who seemed unaffected by the tense atmosphere. "Lexi would know his schedule better than anyone else, although I don't know how much she knows once he leaves here." Beth was a curious soul, and she had often found herself wondering what the Captain got up to outside of work. She'd never ask however, so instead just created obscure fantasies to amuse herself. "You want to speak with her? Both of us crowding her desk is only going to look suspicious." She had very little in common with Lexi, so getting information from her would be much harder than it would for Theo.
(I had to refrain from having her refer to Ryan as the Sea Witch, not a very Beth thing to do XD)

“Yeah. I’m hoping she might have something on his schedule that might explain things, or maybe she noticed something weird about him when he was leaving last night or coming in this morning,” Theo suggested
When the woman suggested that he talk to Lexi alone, Theo nodded and, with a mock salute, turned to go and talk to the administrator.
It was a short conversation, but from a distance still pretty entertaining. Lexi and Theo lulling dramatic facial expressions and just generally being way more expressive than it was normal to be. Lexi seemed to check a few things on her computer before Theo returned
“Well, first of all, I now owe Lexi and have to film her music video for her,” Theo said with a roll of his eyes “but secondly...”
His eyebrows pulled together as his expression became a mix of confusion and surprise.
“Lexi said that Captain was a little late this morning. First of all, hypocrite. Second of all, that’s not like him at all. Something happened, probably on his way to work this morning. What do you think we should do next?”

“I guess,” Theo responded to her affectionate scolding “it’s true, though, nobody knows where he goes. You go home to your kids, I go home to my TV, Lexi goes to dance rehearsals, and Ruiz does... whatever Ruiz does. Goes back to her batcave, I guess. But the Captain? He might as well vanish into thin air. He might even live here and we wouldn’t know.”
At Beth’s comment about the Captain parking somewhere else and walking in, Theo raised an eyebrow.
“Interesting, interesting. So something happened while he was walking to the precinct? We have to retrace his steps, then we can pull the CCTV from all of the streets he walked along. That should tell us if anything happened. If nothing happened on his way in, it might have happened while he was at home last night.”
He quickly grabbed his jacket, which hung on the back of his chair, and put it on.
“Let’s go, Sarge, maybe we can find something interesting.”

“You’re right - the Captain is pretty predictable, in that way,” Theo said with a nod “let’s check those out.”
He led the way out of the precinct, heading out onto the street and starting to walk to the first of their possible car parks, noting the CCTV cameras he saw along the way. If the Captain’s car was parked in this car park, they could pull the CCTV and see what had happened.
“I don’t know,” Danton said “I honestly don’t know enough about the Captain to know what’d sour his mood this much, or make him show emotion at all. He did seem to be in pain, but I couldn’t see where he was hurting and it might not even be anything to do with this. Maybe someone was rude to him on the street, maybe he got into a fight. Maybe he just fell and is really mad about it. It’s not easy to tell. What do you think?”
He was hoping the CCTV might shed some light on what had happened. But for whatever reason the Captain has been late in that morning, and he seemed in pain. Something had definitely gone down on Ryan’s way into work.
