Bluerose was more than appreciative when the conversation switched topic when Quailhop arrived. Although some knew of her past, it was still something she did not wish to speak of openly, as it opened scars too deep to seal. She didn't let Howlingstar go unknowing of her appreciative little smile, yet as quickly as it came it was wiped clean, and she set her gaze on the pregnant queen.
Bluerose hadn't been here for the first death of her kits, and yet she sensed the haunting aura still surrounding the both of them. Grief was not something to be let go of easily... She would have showed her sympathy, but it was not her place. It was her job to assure that these next kits made their journey safely into the world.
She did as she always did when Quailhop so seldomly showed herself, giving her a quick look over to assess her physical standings. No, she hasn't eaten. She thought to herself, glazing her eyes towards the fresh kill pile. If she is too keep her next litter healthy, she must stomach her grief at some point...
Bluerose said nothing, the quiet shecat politely tucking her tail over her paws as she let the couple speak before she brought up... the issue. It couldn't be ignored. Bluerose had been medicine cat for almost 3 moons, she needed an apprentice, partially for her own sanity, and also because there was one eager kit who was clearly interested in her work. Time and time again, little Magpiekit would sneak into her den to shadow of her work.
She would humor her with tellings of her work, showing her some of the herbs and their names and uses, not expecting her to remember any of them come the morrow. But, she kept showing interest. Every morning it seemed she would come in, and it shocked Bluerose just how much she had remembered. The little kit had a passion for the field... And yet...
Bluerose could not stomach to look at her. The kitten reminded her too much of... Bluerose's heart froze as her mind dragged her back to that situation, the blood, the sound of meat being thrown lifelessly to the forest floor. Manic laughter. Horror wrought through her like stinging venom, making her feel just as helpless, small, and terrified as she had back then. A moment of panic overtook her before she snapped herself back to the waking world, the image of Magpiekit's siblings seared into her brain.
She couldn't take her as an apprentice. She couldn't even look at her. But, Magpiekit's ceremony was to happen today, and a decision had to be made. Benefit the clan by taking on a medicine prodigy, or force the shecat to stomach through the pain of seeing her every day?

Her tired heather gaze pored over the two, taking the moment of pause to wordlessly regard the situation. Body language was always a telltale method to identifying a subject—though for someone originally keen to spotting differences in atmosphere and behavior, her lack of sleep had put her at a grave disadvantage. No longer could she exploit the awareness brought by noting the slightest of tail twinges or unsheathed claws. It was now otherwise meaningless nonsense, one she could have formerly deciphered to appreciate a better outlook at what she was getting into.
The molly’s ears stiffened at her mate’s contact, and it took every nerve in her body not to recoil. There was once a time where she deeply loved her consort. Sure, the affection was still there, but it had… changed. Become tainted, if one would. The death of her first litter had strained their relationship, despite it being neither of their faults. They had become awkward around one another, more reserved and… distant. And, though her restlessness had deprived her of her original sharp ability to read individuals, his agonized gaze each time he looked at her was evident—painfully so.
Still, she managed to plaster a fake smile and stiffly return Howlingstar’s show of endearment—a gentle nudge on his shoulder, followed by mellifluous words of gratitude,
“Fine, thank you.” Her tone was laced with uneasiness, but genuine appreciativeness was able to still shine through, fortunately overwhelming that of her discomfort. After all, no reason to make a scene in front of the medicine cat. This could be discussed more privately, when the two mates were alone.
Her resolve at keeping composed, however, did not extend to the quick revoking of her consort's tail as it attempted to snake towards her belly; a reflex, if anything, one she regretted immediately, but decided to continue on with the conversation in hopes none had taken notice.
“And no, I haven’t eaten. Perhaps I’ll do that now and, um, leave the two of you to continue talking.”
She dipped her head, almost apologetically. Despite their obvious indifference at allowing her involvement, the queen felt as if she’d disturbed something important.

If the tom cat had noticed the way his mate had recoiled at the slightest touch, the tom cat managed not to show it on his face. Even if he could feel his already shattered heart begin to break again as it had been doing most recently. He pulled away slightly, happy enough to simply be in her presence and do his best not to make her feel uncomfortable. He looked back to the silent medicine cat with a worried twitch of his whiskers as he drew his tail around his paws and contented himself for now with the fact his mate had left the confines of her den. Little by little, he would do what he could to get the shecat he loved back. Even at the cost of his own shattered heart. Whether or not she even loved him any more was something he still questioned himself about, but as long as he had breath in his lungs he would have love in his heart for her. But the death of their kits had changed so much between them. It had left his beloved mate a broken shecat. And the leader couldn't be described as doing all too much better. But he would have taken every ounce of pain his body was capable of surviving if it meant he might see his mate smile again, he ached for the shecat he had known. "You honestly haven't interrupted anything," he promised with a dip of his head. Stretching out a little in an attempt to look more at ease than he was feeling. The only true give away was the bristle of fur raising across his spine, but otherwise he maintained himself rather well considering what was causing his heart to hammer. Returning his attention to the medicine cat with an apologetic flicker of his gaze as he added with a quieter tone of voice. "In fact your opinion might be helpful, in regards to the medicine cat apprentice position." He said with a meaningful look at Bluerose, though not necessarily pushy. In truth it was something they needed to discuss, and the opinion of his mate would have been appreciated. Once upon a time the strategic Quailhop had practically been a right paw to Howlingstar, it was how they had become mates during his earlier moons. Her straight thinking helped in a great deal, and part of him hoped that perhaps reminding her of what she had once been might help. He too grieved more than he had ever felt was possible, but with new kits to come he was desperate to make sure they were ok and safe. They deserved the wonderful mother he knew she could be, and had once been. But the tom's composure crumbled rather surprisingly at her recent comment. "Please," he was embarrassed the moment the word has slipped past his lips but he couldn't withdraw it. He settled into his more normal tone of voice but there was a degree of pleading in his dark gaze. "Please," he repeated this time calmer. "I've not yet eaten, it might be nice to share?" He offered sounding much more his former self as the facade returned to his features.

Bluerose shuffled her paws at the seemingly awkward situation she was put into. That little shuffle was the only thing telling of her uncomfort, however, as she then gave Howlingstar a reassuring smile looked back at Quailhop. The relationship between the two was rightfully strained, they could benefit by going out alone either hunting or just letting their paws wander. Bluerose felt that they needed to get away from clan life for a while, just enough to them to remember why it was they had fallen in love in the first place. Relationships were a tricky thing, they were a climb and fall of up's and down's, and it was clear these two had been down ever since the death of their litter.
The molly still remained silent, but waved her tail beckoningly at Quailhop, letting her know she would enjoy the others company.

-claim for my forms- I'll be joining momentarily c:
Ravencall, Due to his name, one might think Ravencall is a loud, boisterous, and outgoing cat. However, he is quite the opposite. To start, he even has a dreary outward appearance. His pelt is pitch black, with only his dark green eyes adding at least some variety to the lack of colors on his pelt. He is a lithe, skinny tom, and a bit lanky. He's quick on his paws, but not the best at thinking quick in battle. He much prefers to fight with words, as he is very quick witted and intelligent. He is more on the shy, quiet side of the spectrum, but he doesn't avoid social interactions all together. He is a kind-hearted tom, but has no patience for those he perceives as less intelligent than him, and often thinks others are below him. When he feels this way, he will react with snarky comments, passive aggressiveness, and quiet sarcasm. Sometimes it can be hard to pick up on, but other times he doesn't attempt to hide it. Ravencall is also quite fearless, unblinking when staring in the face of danger. Some may call this ignorance, but he calls it bravery. plagυe docтor Warrior Brother to Spidersong? The femme had acquired an upright stance, intending to bid adieu and dismiss herself, but her mate’s near-pleading words ensnared her to stay a bit longer. She seated herself down again, this time managing to shoot Bluerose an apologetic smile. The poor feline seemed embarrassed, if anything, and that was the last thing the queen wished to inflict upon anyone.
“Breakfast can wait.”
Her tone was indifferent, a stark contrast to the sincerity it was mixed with.
She’d much rather discuss an apprenticeship than to select a piece of game she’d otherwise not finish due to her faltering appetite. It was growing worse by the day and though she willed herself to eat for the sake of her litter, sometimes the lack of biological pangs of hungry caused the need to slip from her mind.
“Who did we have in mind? I’ve noticed Magpiekit very interested in the rank. She’s always disappearing from the nursery to spend time in the Medicine Cat den. If that’s not a clear giveaway, I don’t know what is.” Amusement and a motherly gentleness had softened her voice; fondly contemplating the excitably kitten and her tendencies to return to the den with her fur in a mess and full of herbal bits.

Finally the shecat spoke, her voice cool and steady in tone. "Yes... She shows a great interest in my work, and not only that, but of the little I have told her she has shown an incredible memory." Bluerose shifted her gaze slowly to the nursery. She saw the shifting bodies within, but tore her gaze away before she could catch a glimpse of the kittens coat. Her eyes were wide in horror, she could almost hear her fathers words upon the air that whistled in her ears. Stop. Get a hold of yourself. She blinked and cleared her throat, setting her attention back on Quailhop. "I've never seen someone take such an interest in the art of healing. I believe that with the proper training, she can become a medicine cat the clan would be proud of." Bluerose exhaled, bringing her eyes next to Howlingstar. "Of course, the matter can not be as simple as asking her if she would like to become on, and then taking her on. I will require affirmation from StarClan, and I refuse to accept any apprentice until I felt they have guided me." She remained firm.
Throughout the calamities the clan has befallen, Bluerose never shifted her loyalty to their ancestors. She did not care if her words came off as rude, she simply tried to stay firm. The priestly shecat stood tall and proud, looking at Howlingstar with leveled eyes, and then looking to Quailhop. She seemed to be anticipating for one of them to speak out against her idea.

(I hope it's no bother that Bluerose is adamant about communing with StarClan first! Howlingstar can always be firm and tell her no, he has the most authority after all, but Bluerose will be very sassy if that's the case. XD I also thought it would be fun for Magpiekit to be roped along into going with her to wherever they commune with StarClan!)

Even if it had been at the forfeiture of a degree of his dignity, the midnight cloaked tom was grateful that his mate agreed to stay. Noting to himself to ensure that she did in fact find herself something to eat, for a brief heartbeat he allowed his gaze to linger again on the swell of her stomach. Taking note of the way her flanks shifted a little, alive with the kicks of his unborn litter, he managed to hide the smile which threatened his otherwise neutral expression. Admittedly he resisted the urge to move closer, a protective instinct and the wish to feel the kicks of his kits underpaw. During her first pregnancy it had been his greatest joy, to feel the life brimming inside. But now that first life was gone and dead, and his mate barely allowed him to touch her. After all the pair had been through, smiling felt wrong. Even when it came to the prospect of the new life his mate carried. Managing to hide the way his whiskers twitched at his mate's response, he rested his head lazily on his paws and listened contently to the shecats discuss. As leader it wasn't often he had the chance to take a passive stance in conversation, and he was grateful for the opinions of two of the cats he held in highest regard. His gaze every so often flickered to his mate's swollen stomach, but otherwise he seemed to listen with keenness. Leader as he might have been, Howlingstar was young for the position he held, and just as young to be a father for the second time. Though he hid it well, it seemed to be detrimental to him on occasion. The tom cat released a quiet sigh at the medicine cat's comment regarding communing with starclan. His whiskers twitched with a rumble as he listened, though the tom had been raised a cat of EstuaryClan and hence with their beliefs, but it only took one look at the tom to note just how sorely he stuck out amongst his clan like a sore paw. And with the recent tragedy he had seen not only amidst his clan but in his own little family, the tom had found his beliefs beginning to falter. Though he was yet to admit such aloud. "I'm sure you would be capable of making a fine choice that StarClan would agree with either way," his tone remained neutral in spite of the uncertainty in his own chest. "And we need to make a decision at some point," he knew Magpiekit wouldn't likely enjoy the prospect of having her apprenticeship off even further. StarClan or not.

"With all due respect, Howlingstar, as medicine cat of this clan, the acceptance and guidance of StarClan is very important to me. I am only one cat, I can not be expected to have the wisdom of our ancestors, and I will not accept any apprentice that they do not deem as worthy." the mollies faith was unbending, and unparalleled. She settled her gaze on Howlingstar, it was not filled with hostility, but rather surly conviction. What she spoke of she believed to be right, even if it clashed with what he, and some other clan members would think.
Bluerose was not aware of her leaders wavering faith in their ancestors, if she had... Well, her loyalty would likewise sway. "I am sorry if it is an inconvenience, but I can make the trek swiftly, I would only require a days time to receive my message." She dipped her head in a show of respect, hoping the tom knew that just because her opinion differed, it didn't mean she thought of the tom any lesser. He was still her superior.
