She was studying him carefully as her apprentice attempted to hoist himself of the back of the tree, watching as Shellpaw's legs struggled a bit to carry him up to one of the lower branches of the oak tree, as his front paws gripped further onto the tree's bark. His first jump was a little too low for her taste, but this was apprentice, not a full grown warrior like her and most of her other clanmates. Shadefern sat down with her tail wrapped around her, looking on as Shellpaw finally made it to the branch.
She could see him looking towards her, obviously trying to search for reassurance is his skills so far. Shadefern would give it to him, in the form of a kind nod and the twitch of her whiskers. The small sparrow had not noticed him yet, which clearly meant Shellpaw was still doing excellent so far.

The cool water on Adderpool’s pad made his tense body relax already, but his ear flicked with annoyance at Honeyfur’s grumbling. “I’m sure it would have healed on its own eventually...” he muttered, looking away from the medicine cat’s busy paws. Perhaps if he had left it alone long enough it would have closed up... but it probably would’ve become infected. The strong scent of herbs spiked his anxiety, but he kept it inside and sat as still as possible. [ Honeyfur ] ⇻ [ Medicine Den ] ⇻ [ ✨ nissabug ✨ with Adderpool ]
The medicine cat was still tutting away to himself under his breath as he worked, stopping suddenly to intake a very sharp breath at Adderpool's words. The tom's eyes narrowed ever so slightly, although it was hard to tell, they were so heavily lidded already. Releasing the warrior's paw gently, the Selkirk turned his attention to the small pile of herbs sitting beside him. "It might have." The tom commented curtly. "But there is such a thing as infection," He emphasized, shaking his head as he picked out a few herbs between his jaws, chewing up a poultice of goldenrod and burdock. Spitting the mixture out and onto one of his paws, he applied a small amount to the cut on Adderpool's paw. The tom eyed the warrior closely as he wrapped the paw a few times with a spool of cobwebs around his left paw, making sure he was alright. "I know you all feel like you don't need the help, but this is quite literally my only duty to my clan, so please don't deny me being able to do it."

Adderpool shifted uncomfortably as Honeyfur applied the poultice his paw. “Sorry,” he muttered. “I guess I just felt really mouse-brained for tripping it on a rock of all things.” He noticed the medicine cat’s wandering eyes and tried to lighten up a little. “Did you, uh, always want to do this?” he asked, attempting to make conversation as he started wrapping it in cobweb.

Catching his mentors eyes, the she-cats small show of a reassuring nod gave him the small confidence boost he has been looking for. The tom took a deep breath, looking away from Shadefern and back up at the sparrow he was supposed to be hunting. Pulling himself up the tree by the way of some lower hanging branches closer to him, he gained on the bird. Slowing down as he neared it, Shellpaw held his breath, He admired the bird from behind, thinking about just how exactly he intended to go about catching it. Admittedly, the tom was much more suited to hunting in the water, and found himself navigating the tree tops quite clumsily. Deciding he might as well just go for it, the Siamese pulled himself onto the base of the branch the bird perched on, trying his best to move slowly and soundlessly.
Hoisting himself up successfully, Shellpaw dropped into position to catch the prey, body slunk into a low crouch. He placed his paws very carefully in front of him as he pulled himself just a few whiskerlengths closer.... his haunches wiggled in anticipation to lunge, and the tree branch swayed with the apprentices back half. Mousebrain! He thought scoldingly to himself, watching as the bird squawked out a distressed cry and beat its wings to take flight. Hoping to correct his mistake, Shellpaw still jumped forward with claws outstretched. He managed to land a blow to the wing of the sparrow as it attempted to flee, knocking the bird out of flight and sending it tumbling towards the ground.

"If this is causin' you any... discomfort or anxiety, le' me know," Honefur mumbled, noting how uncomfortable Adderpool seemed to be just being in the medicine den, let alone being treated inside of it, with the squirming he was obviously trying hard to control. Finishing wrapping the warriors paw, Honeyfur turned it from side to side for a moment, as if admiring his work. "But don't feel mousebrained for it. Ye can't be faulted by no one for nothin' while you're out there tryin' ta put food in your clanmates bellies." The medicine cat looked at Adderpool with something close to admiration, and blinked slowly as is surprised at the tom's question. "Well... ya', actually. I could never see maself doin' anythin' else. I'm not about all the fightin' and killin' and all the other ruckus y'all warriors get up to out there." He explained, flat face screwing up in distaste. The medicine cat waved a paw in front of his face, as if dismissing the thought of him being a warrior as nothing but absolutely preposterous.

Seeing the bird being slapped by Shellpaw's paw, Shadefern quickly stepped into action. He was doing very well for this lesson in the trees, but there is time when even she must step in to correct her apprentice. Shadefern came out of hiding from the cover of the bushes nearby, speeding towards where the bird had landed. It was struggling to keep it's injured wing stable to fly again, but to avail. Using her teeth, she bit hard onto the sparrow's neck and killed it. As much as Shadefern would've preferred Shellpaw taking it out himself, she didn't want to risk losing prey for the Clan over a lesson.
After a quick prayer to StarClan, Shadefern gazed up at Shellpaw, who was still up in the tree, and a little too close to the edge of the branch for her taste. She's pretty sure there medicine cat would just faint at the spot if she came back with an apprentice whose back was broken. Calling out to him, she yowled "Watch your step, Shellpaw! I don't want you falling from up there, alright?"

Having been in such haste to try and catch the fleeing bird, Shellpaw was shocked for a moment that he still had his footing, The tom had lunged after the prey purely on instinct, forgetting for a moment just how high up he was, and it was sheer luck that he still stood on the branch after jumping towards the sparrow. Unbothered, the apprentice peered downward to watch Shadefern finish off the bird. Not at all affected by the fact that he had just lost his kill, Shellpaw broke out into a little victory dance, "Aw yeah, Shadefern! Teamwork!" He called down, beaming. When he heard his mentor call a warning up to him, the young Siamese just shrugged. "C'mon, I'm not going to fall, I'm no mousebrain!" He continued to wiggle his body around, tail dancing from side to side as he picked up his paws and swayed from side to side precariously in the tree..

She yowled up to him, this time loud for him to understand through his stubborn skull. "Shellpaw, please come down! I don't want you getting hurt, head down the branches now!" She even added a warning of a hiss, baring her teeth and waving her bushy black tail. This was supposed to be a simple lesson up in the trees, not a one-way trip to a yowling Honeyfur.

The apprentice halted his celebratory dance falteringly, a small frown creeping onto his handsome face. He didn't understand why Shadefern was so upset-they'd caught the sparrow anyhow, and it wasn't like he was going to fall out of the tree. Just the idea seemed preposterous to the confident and ever optimistic apprentice. However, is was visible just how frustrated his mentor was from even up in the tree. "I'm coming!" The tom called down, taking one last look over his shoulder at the spot where he had failed to catch his sparrow. Begrudgingly, Shellpaw began his descent, shimmying down the trunk to drop to the lower branches at first, then, growing bold, he began to hop downward from branch to branch, gaining speed as he grew closer to the forest floor.

Adderpool purred. “Yeah, I’m not much for the fighting either, but you do what you gotta for your Clan,” he said, tipping his head to the herbs in the den. He definitely wouldn’t have cut out to be a medicine cat either, as it felt like way too much responsibility on your shoulders. When Honeyfur was done inspecting his work, he gingerly placed his paw on the ground and winced. He forgot it doesn’t heal automatically. “What do I do now?”

Shadefern knew he was pretty bold, and that in itself was already a tough challenge for her in the first place. She made her way towards the oak's roots, waiting for her apprentice to get down there and give him a proper warning to be careful next time when there training in the trees again. Her fur was trying it's best to stay down as looked on worried. Does he not care if he falls?
