Jonathon Lee | 17 | Male
The first thing one might notice about Jonathon is his mixed race features. His mother is American, while his father is Korean, making him a mix of the two. As a child, Jonathon realised he was a little different to some other people because of this and it became almost an obsession for him to 'fit in' among the crowds. This might seem strange to people who don't know him well, because his exterior exudes confidence and self-righteousness. But there is a little kid inside, watching the world, and wishing his eyes could be wider, and blue instead of brown. Growing into a teenager has allowed him to understand his ethnic background and these days he is more proud of who he is, but that second-guessing doubt is always there, and he can never seem to shake it off.
He has olive tanned skin, and slanted brown eyes. He has bushy black eyebrows, and somewhat shaggy black hair that is thick and seems to grow quite quickly. It isn't too long and he does try to style it, but it seems to point about and do as it pleases. It has become quite the 'Jonathon' look, and he does seem to pull it off. He is tall and not so much 'muscly', more just lean. He does have that 'million dollar smile', with those straight white teeth, but that is only after having endured four years of braces. He was blessed with that sharp jawline and prominent cheekbones - thank those beautiful Korean genetics for that one.
Jonathon enjoys being liked, in fact, he may be vain enough to say that if isn't liked he wouldn't be happy. Being like that though means one must have a certain personality trait: athleticism, beautiful, charisma, or luck. Jonathon falls under 'charismatic'. He knows how to talk his way into something and how to talk himself out of something. He is that kid in class who all the teachers just seem to adore, and he for some reasons seems to get out of all punishments. Blame it on that expensive smile of his! Unlike a few of the other 'popular' kids, doesn't just stick to 'his kind of people'. He does strike up conversations with others, he enjoys meeting new people, and everyday it seems he does. Which is where his charm comes in with the ladies, of whom he loves muchly. He doesn't lack ladies attention. The struggle is keeping his attention.

The blaring noise of Jude's phone alarm had permeated into her dreams again. This time, she had dreamt about a raging, wild storm tearing Gloriaville apart by the seams, and she hadn't been able to find anyone else. The image of smoke stacked skies and rubble at her feet was imprinted at the back of her mind. At first, the girl had thought the alarm was tornado sirens, but then she jerked awake in a sweat under her numerous blankets and pillows, a hand pawing under her pillow for her phone. Jude thumbed at the screen and shut off her alarm. Her eyes were squinted at the bright light of her phone screen. 7:30 AM. If she didn't get up soon, she'd be late for school. Again. Damn it all.
There was something about mornings that just made Jude's mood sour. Maybe it was the fact that she never got enough sleep. The girl had a habit of staying up far too late, simply listening to music or watching movies, not wanting the day to end and the next to come. Weekends were a solace, the oasis in the desert, though Jude felt that was a bit of a dramatic metaphor. Either way, mornings weren't fun. Getting up and getting dressed for another day at her dusty old school. Just what she wanted to do. Great. Spectacular. It was only November, they were barely two months into senior year, yet Jude was already counting down the days 'til graduation. It felt like a daily chore, that was all day, leaving her barely any time to enjoy her own passions. Like her crummy, going nowhere band, or her movie critiques she'd write and almost never post online. Super time consuming work.
After staying in bed for fifteen minutes more, Jude's second morning alarm shook her out of dozing off again. The ginger finally sat up and mumbled curses under her breath. She made sure her phone was plugged in to charge, and turned on a quiet playlist from her music library. Time to start the day. Her routine was as normal as anyone else's - get up, brush her teeth, figure out what to do with her hair, wash her face and such. While makeup was fun to do, Jude preferred a bit of mascara and tinted lip balm for school. Minimal effort was evident. Her outfit was a typical look, she never strayed far from the book - an old t-shirt from some 90's punk band, tucked into her faded old jeans and a denim jacket thrown over. Nothing too flashy when it came to school. She was starting not to care anymore. Breakfast was a long gone concept, aside from drinking a water bottle out of the fridge.
Now looking more decent, and with a couple minutes to spare, Jude flopped back on her bed and picked up her phone. Her thumbs tapped at the screen and unlocked the phone, proceeding to her opening her messages and shooting Jonathon her usual morning text. She half-expected him not to reply, but most people at school took advantage that Jude had a car (some sad rusty red old Chevy cavalier from the 90s) and her license.
To: Johnathon 👀👀 hey do you need a ride or nah.

There was a lot of positives to being born to a wealthy family. One was having the privilege of not knowing the struggles that poverty brought, another was living in endless comfort. Of a night, Jonathon would lay his head on his fluffed pillows and cross his arms under said pillow, and he'd close his eyes until blackness consumed him. Of a morning, at 6am, the sun would come beaming through his windows and he'd sweat profusely until he woke. So there was a question here... why on earth don't I have curtains for that window? He looked through squinted eyes to protect them from the blaring rays and he pulled his blankets up over his head as a groan forced it's way out of his throat. It took only a minute for that under-the-blanket fort to turn into a sauna, and it was enough to get Jonathon to evacuate his soft bed. All this money and wealth around him and yet no damned curtains.
Every morning he opted to shower. It was refreshing, he could clean off the sweat bath he formed in his bed, and it allowed him to fully wake up and feel less disgruntled about his whole morning routine. Without thought or effort, he slipped into some black jeans and a comedic patterned tee, then he moved downstairs. His house was still and quiet, which was also no surprise. His parents would have left the house already and he had no siblings or pets to make noise. In fact, if there was something which suddenly started making noises, he'd probably scream. He didn't have a manly scream.
Despite the fact he hated being forced out of bed so early, there was no denying the fact that he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of a morning, where he could sip at a tea and eat some jam on toast while he checked his social media on his phone. After he would leave the house everything became so loud and hectic, so when he was alone he didn't feel lonely. He felt peaceful. Being at school and surrounded by hundreds of other people was more lonely, if he were honest. He knew he was lucky though, even though he was forced to wake up every morning at 6am, he knew he was very lucky. He got everything he ever wanted and more.
He glanced at his phone as it buzzed and checked out the notification. From: Judey-Patudey Heh, what a classic nickname... It always made him chuckle to himself. He read over the message and replied in a minute.
To: Judey-Patudey could you please bless me with your ride
Without his family able to drive him, he always needed a lift. Various people tended to offer him one since most people knew he didn't have a license and was too lazy to get one. He appreciated the offer from Jude though, since she did have the coolest car, and it was always fun to mess around and joke with her. He heard a lot of guys talking about she would be 'prettier if she wore more make-up' or 'nicer if she were more girly'. Jonathon didn't mind though. He liked her spunk and her style and thought of her as unique. She was a rhombus. She didn't follow the rules of squares by having total equilibrium, and she certainly wasn't a perfect circle. She was a rhombus. He hadn't ever told her that, though.

Smiling at his response, Jude was quick to get on her feet and leave the house for the day. Her house wasn't anything fancy, just a pretty average, comfortable house for her and her father. Her mom had passed away when she was young, and her older brother was already an adult with his own job and life, so she was just stuck in an empty home full of ghosts. She hated being home alone, but her father worked some managerial position for a construction company, which meant he was busy travelling out of state for days at a time. Jude could go more than a week without seeing him, and though they called and texted daily, it was still really lonely buying her own groceries and keeping everything decent. It was a big reason why she was eager to get out of the house so often, aside from the obvious excuse of school. School felt pointless and droning, so she tried to find other things to fill up her time away from home. Band practices were a good distraction, even if her band sucked. Johnathon was always fun to hang out with too, probably her most authentic friend in school, but she tried to keep her distance from his friends and crowd. Not her style. She had no clue how one person could be liked by an entire school population. And it was weird, being around people that didn't like her being around Johnathon. It was just weird to figure out how to interact with that, and she just didn't care for them. Jude did what she pleased, and hangs out with whoever she wants. And has known Johnathon way longer than most of his crowd. This was totally unbiased thinking on her part, of course, no nonsense about her years long unrequited crush on him. She was totally over that. Of course.
Sitting in her dingy car, it took a good five minutes to rev up the engine and get chugging along - she made a mental note to visit her brother Matteo, since he was a mechanic - and the ginger followed the familiar streets of their tiny town to pull up outside of Johnathon's house. She honked the horn for a good half minute, effectively pissing off his neighbors this early in the morning, and waited for her car's heating to kick in. Early November in this neck of the woods meant the weather was colder and colder by the day, which Jude hadn't expected, and so she sat shivering with her denim jacket doing almost nothing. There goes her effort to try and be in a good mood, it was Friday after all.

Knowing that Jude only lived a good ten minutes away from his house, he climbed the stairs back up to his room, and went into his en-suite. He combed his messy mop to no avail. See, he always tried to get that 'cool guy' hair wave, where it was slicked to the side and looked neat and tidy. His thick hair was too stubborn though, so it always fell back into its shaggy and tousled state. It was the thought that counted, right? He grabbed a plain black jacket from a hook off the back of his door, and slung his backpack over his shoulder as he jogged back downstairs. He ignored the other messages he received from some of his other friends about asking if he wanted a lift and waited in the kitchen for Jude to arrive. She arrived loud, but in style. He appreciated that. At the door, he slipped on his black and white shoes, then he was out - twisting the lock behind him. Every time Jude picked him up he was sure his neighbours weren't happy, most other people would send him a text to let him know they'd arrived. Jude didn't live by those rules though. Remember? She was a rhombus.
He walked down the drive and could smell the fumes her old rust-bucket almost instantly. "Mornin'!" He greeted her as he opened the door and threw his bag onto the bag seat, then sat his behind on the front passenger seat. He rubbed at his arms as the November chills began to set in and he fiddled with the heating for a few futile moments. "Jeez, I'm gonna freeze to death." He looked at her and smirked, "Then you'll have to hide my body. Or maybe you could keep me and clone me..." he trailed off thoughtfully as if that were an actual option. Of course, he wasn't serious. He looked at her again, like he actually looked at her this time and took in her appearance. She looked... as per usual. He liked her fiery red cork screws locks because it was almost as if her hair had it's own personality - kind of like his own.
He'd known Jude for a few years now from school and she always remained a trusty friend. They didn't always hang out, but he enjoyed it when they did. He didn't think much other of her than a friend though since... well... he just never really had. Except once, when he first met her and he thought she was very cute and interesting, yet he hadn't had the nerves to delve deeper into those thoughts - it had been odd. Any other girl he could flirt, wine, and dine. Once again, he hadn't thought too much of it. He sat back in his seat and placed his hands behind his head, seeming relaxed and at home in her old Chevy. That was something he was good at - making himself at home.

"Clone you? You wish. Nah, I'd just cram you in the trunk, frozen solid all throughout winter." Jude teased with a grin, peeling out of the neighborhood in record time. She was a crazy driver, unsurprisingly. "God, it really feels like winter's setting in early this year though. If we get snowed in, I'm gonna be so f-ed off. Those frozen sidewalks are deadly assassins. Right when you least expect it, you're bashin' your head in on concrete trying to check the mail." For anyone else, it'd be offputting how she could be so brash, but she knew Johnathon took it as she said it - with lighthearted intent. Their familiarity with each other was what made their friendship so easy, in Jude's humble opinion. It was nice, just being around someone who knew how you were, and didn't make it a big deal if you cussed too much, or had a bad temper. That was the great thing about knowing each other since like, 6th grade. Oh, the stories she could tell about tiny, nerdy John. Technically, they were both tiny and nerdy wimps. She was new to the country, barely spoke a lick of English back then. Friendship somehow still worked out though. She side-eyed him from the driver's seat, and her heart gave a sad lurch. Just friends.
Their school wasn't far, twenty minutes max with morning traffic, and she spent most of that morning commute either banging at the buttons of her car for the heater to turn on, or switching between the radio stations for decent music. Dripping with sarcasm, she glanced at Johnathon and said "Do I sound awful if I say music on the radio nowadays sucks? 'Cause it really does." The parking lot was full of students milling about and cars looking for parking, and Jude was quick to cut off other cars to get a decent spot. Her car heating was finally kicking in so the ginger took a moment to rub her hands together and keep some warmth. After grabbing her bag, she clambered out of the car with a frown. "Is school really important today? It's Friday, they won't make us do important stuff on a Friday." Jude looked like a fizzled out flame in the cold.

It was obvious to tell that Jonathon was used to the crazy way Jude drove by the way he just tilted the seat back a bit and opened the window to stick his hand out, even though the heater was on. It wasn't like it was doing any heating anyway. He smirked at Jude's suggestion of just leaving in the trunk to stay frozen until he thawed in the spring and he rolled his slanted eyes at her, "Most girls would kill to be able to clone me," it was a joke but... was it really? There were definitely girls in the school who made it clear they wanted a piece of Jonathon and his tanned, sharp jawline. He listened to Jude's usual ranty antics and laughed with a shake of his head, "I don't know why you're bashing you head on the sidewalk when you could just walk slow like a normal person and avoid falling over," his voice had a teasing tone to it. He often liked to tease Jude because of the fact he could get reactions out of it, there was no teasing someone like there was Jude, but he'd done it so much that he felt comfortable doing it. She knew he was only ever teasing and he knew she wouldn't take it to heart. It felt nice to be able to talk and joke freely, to be natural, and not feel a moment of doubt.
"In fact, you do sound awful. I for one like listening to the same song ten different times in the same hour," he placed a hand on his chest in mock defense. His attention turned to the parking lot full of people as they entered the school and he prayed for Jude's sake they didn't hit anyone - it was a common ritual. He grabbed his bag from the back seat and climbed out of the car while Jude warmed her hands, he leaned against the door waiting for her to emerge from the car. He turned around to look at Jude as she frowned and his brown eyes looked back towards the school. People walked towards the doors like sheep. He looked back to Jude, "Are you suggesting we skip?" He raised a bushy black eyebrow, "Because I'm totally down so long as you shout me some lunch," he sent her his grin - that expensive smile. Of course he had money to pay but it was so much nicer if he could get her too. "Because if you peer pressure me into ditching school, I'm missing out on an education, so I will never be able to work. So you have to pay for lunch." His argument wasn't convincing, but he tried anyway, his voice sarcastic and humorous.
To be honest, Jonathon liked school and learning. But he had to admit he agreed with Jude. It was cold, it was Friday, and if she was paying for lunch, he would be up for anything. He folded his arms over the roof of the cold metal of the car and rested his chin on them as he awaited her response.

"Me? Suggesting we skip? That's libel!" Jude stuck her tongue out at him, teasing of course, "Uh yeah, let's go. Just our morning classes though, I'd rather choke than sit through calculus this early in the morning. We could be back later. Possibly." She grit her teeth at a cold gust of wind and wrapped her jacket around her tightly. Standing around outside in the lot was a fate worse than death with this weather. At the mention of her paying for lunch, Jude narrowed her eyes at Johnathon with a slightly annoyed look. She could clock that stupid, expensive smug grin off his face if she wanted, but the girl had a soft spot for him. Which she hated. She wasn't soft, wasn't supposed to be and didn't want people to think she was. But Jude couldn't help but laugh and shake her head. Normally she'd would protest, but the gal couldn't not be in a good mood hanging out with him. The idea of ditching filled her with a bit of hyper-energetic glee; bad decisions were the norm, Jude was super impulsive. "Chivalry is totally dead, it seems. Sure, but that means you owe me next time. Like, all my favorite snacks and whatever. Get in the car while it's still warmed up, nerd." Her hand banged on the roof of the car before hopping back in. It'd be best to hurry and leave before classes started and the parking lot emptied out.
She was first to hop back into the car, which was thankfully still warmed up as she cranked the engine and Johnathon hopped in as well. This was a bad idea of course, but screw it, the weekend was here, she hadn't hung out with Johnathon in a while, so it was all going good. "You know," Jude glanced over at him as she reversed and high tailed it out of the school's parking lot, "Don't be a stranger all the time dude. You should come to band practice sometimes, maybe then I could pack a house whenever we do have a show, Mr. Popularity." The idea was kind of nerve-wracking, and she half regretted bringing it up, but their fun moments together were further and further apart. Her bandmates wouldn't mind; one was a girl named Shiloh who sent her their AP English Lit's homework when she ditched, another was Dante, a guy from her previously mentioned calculus class. Their band was called The Horror Kids, specializing in loud punk music in which Jude could sing but instead liked to yell and play bass, and they kind of really sucked. It was still lots of fun though.

Jonathon smirked and rolled his eyes, "What? Calculus is what fuels my fire for life." He sounded so inspired, and used his fists to emphasis his point by hitting one on the car roof. It was a lie, of course, Jonathon was sure he could get by his life without ever having to do any sort of calculus again. His first period for that day was chemistry, and jeez, count him out! He felt the cold against his cheeks and breathed out a large breath, but it didn't stop him from furrowing his eyebrows at her and smirking. "Chivalry is dead? More like equality rises!" He followed her instructions and climbed into the car, totally at ease with the fact that every time he entered a car with Jude that it was a death wish. He wondered if she'd properly learned how to drive - though that was rich coming from him, Mr Too Lazy To Get His License.
He took his familiar position of having his hands folded and resting on the back of his head and he relaxed into the chair. He was surprised by her next statement, and hesitated when no witty reply came to mind. He shrugged instead, "If I go to a band practise and have to listen to you singing like Taylor Swift, then you have to come to my basketball practise and watch me shoot like Stephen Curry," he replied. And yes, he knew that Jude had not a single spec of resemblance to Taylor Swift, but any jab to the funny bone he could get, he would take. He also had noticed how he and his long time friend spent less and less time together, other than the occasions she'd be nice enough to drop him off at school, but he didn't think about it too much. He was busy a lot, frankly. As she said, Mr Popularity had a lot of people to deal with and sometimes that meant he would rather go sneak away with a cute girl than be at band practise. Sometimes he would catch up with the guys and have a joke around, but sometimes Jude just slipped from his mind completely. He liked her, he enjoyed her company, but... well, life goes on.
He glanced to her as she drove and raised an eyebrow, "What's it matter anyway? I thought you couldn't care less if people were there or not - you're Jude, you never care." He speculated, his chocolatey eyes moved to her corkscrew locks (they always seemed to gain his attention, they were just so fiery and he liked it). He turned his attention back to the road a few seconds later.

( oof sorry for the long gap in replies, got distracted today. i'll try to keep these consistent. )
"Hey, that stuffing you in the trunk thing I mentioned earlier? Totally a possibility if you keep comparing me to that country-pop one trick pony." The look she shot at John was half-playful, half-deadly. It was an obvious joke, but Jude took some pride in her work. Writing lyrics and music wasn't as easy as it seemed. She couldn't just not care about anything in the world. "Maybe I'd show up to our basketball games if our school's team ever won more than once a season." It was easy to assume Jude didn't care for any sports. The only one that vaguely interested her was hockey 'cause it always ended with bloody fights, but they were ultimately uninteresting. At Johnathon's reply, she already knew to drop the subject. It was hopeless from the start, the glacial rift forming between them. Thinking about it was kind of depressing, but true, that they had different lives and he was just moving on with his. In that meantime, Jude was just there. Staying the same, never moving along with anything. Their tiny town was just a dot on a map, a black hole where people spent their lives. Some of them got away, found jobs in the bigger cities, some of them were stuck here but weren't trapped. The ones that wanted to live here, and figured it all out. Jude knew she was stuck and trapped, and her friend would eventually leave her behind. She shoved the thought to the back of her mind.
Jude gave a noncommittal shrug as the car waited idly for the intersection's red light to turn green. "Eh, I put some effort into it y'know. Might as well reap the benefits. Our shows are fun, have you ever even been in a mosh pit? Listening to music that rattles your teeth? It's like, a religious experience or whatever dramatic metaphor works for that." The mention of it helped her gain back some of her earlier excitement - if she could care about one thing in the world, it was putting on a fun show. They were basically house parties, but lots of weirdo underground bands played at them, including hers, and they'd charge a couple bucks at the door and get really drunk.
Eventually, the car chugged into the town's main street, where the majority of Gloriaville's storefronts were packed together. Big empty parking lots stretched into the horizon for the old, emptied out ones; those were now just gutted buildings where local teen delinquents would congregate and graffiti and have bonfires on weekends. When you live this far out in an empty county, you gotta work hard to find something to do for fun. "What an array of possibilities to do for our ditch day. Where do you wanna go first?" Jude was awfully sarcastic, it was a wonder anyone tolerated her.

[ that's all good! so long as ya get around to it eventually, i dont mind how long it takes. life sometimes gets in the way ^^ also regarding the plot, i feel like eventually something dramatic happens and the plots flips. like, maybe they have an argument or something like that where jude finally lets go of her feelings afterwards, but jonathon realises his an idiot and has feelings for her? cx ]
Jonathon burst out laughing as she referenced throwing his frozen body in the trunk and he moved his hands from behind his head to raise them in defence. "Aye, aye, aye, a guy can do nothing right in this cruel world," he laughed. There was no one else in the world who he could laugh and joke with like he could with Jude. He always felt so comfortable and free to say and do as he pleased without any boundaries to be worried about. He placed his hands back behind his head to resume he relaxed, laid-back position. Though they flew back down and he turned them so his palms were facing the roof in his lap, "What?! We win plenty of times! Thanks to me too, everyone else is useless," it was a bold statement for a tall and skinny young man like he. He loved basketball after he'd been introduced to it a few years back, his agility made him excellent at dodging, and although he wasn't tall by pro standards, he made for a skilful shooter. He didn't expect much from Jude regarding sports though.
"Well, maybe I'll go to a show then. I might find time in my schedule to bless you with an appearance," he flashed his cheeky, toothy grin to her. "Send me a text or something the next time you play," he said that honestly, because it wasn't a joke. If she wanted him there - which, she wouldn't have brought it up if she didn't - he'd make an effort. At least once, he hadn't watched her in so long it would be cool to see what she was playing these days. "I don't like the idea of my teeth rattling though, I only got my braces off last year," he cupped his jaw with a hand and smirk tugged at his lips. If there was anything he was a little vain about, it was probably his teeth - only because he'd spent most of his life being self-conscious about them.
Rolling into the bare carpark, he wondered if ditching had been such a good idea. This town, for the most part, was boring and now that was only heightened by the cold weather making most fun things, like going for a dip in the river, or running riot on the streets, or just walking around in general, a little too cold to enjoy. He looked to Jude, still in the warmth of the car, and raised a bushy eyebrow. "You want to get pancakes at the diner? Or... go bowling?" It seemed a little too early for bowling, but it was about the only positive aspect about this deadbeat town. One day he'd leave, but that seemed so far. "We can eat the famed bowling burritos." Of course, the bowling alley had a little canteen which sold questionable looking food that Jonathon swore only just passed as being actual food, he was positive the meat wasn't actual food. He smirked even harder and leaned towards her slowly, "Or if you're game we could... go for a swim. Naked." It wasn't an actual suggestion, Jonathon was pretty wimpy, and getting him into the cold water would be the best way to hear his unmanly screams. It was just a joke, and after a few moments, he laughed again and shook his head.

ooh yeah i was gonna bring that up actually :0 i had a couple ideas floatin around; what u mentioned first off, like jude and johnaton just argue and she ends up 'getting over' him and they date other people & realize what's actually happening w them. i was also playing around w the idea of jude just running away maybe? something very Dramatique and Impulsive. like she just wants to get in her car and drive as far away as she can, tying in w that whole thing of wanting to escape small town life and she actually does it. i like the idea of just a bunch of angst n such piling up to make this Extra Dramatic for them lmao. gotta make the kiddos suffer ]
"Forewarning though, the band kind of sucks. I make it work, of course, yours truly has to be the star of the show." Jude was secretly very pleased, and also very anxious at the idea of performing in front of Johnathon. It shouldn't be a problem, she's been performing in front of people for months- actual fans of her band, uncaring drunk teenagers at house parties, at a friend's birthday party once- but this was someone she hated to admit she cared about. A lot. Cue another moment of Jude suppressing her emotions; it was a bad habit the gal had, bottling everything up. That's what it took to keep up her uncaring, faux cool facade nowadays. Everyone had a reputation to keep, and that was hers. Looking up and down the mostly empty main street, Jude was happy to sit in the car with Johnathon for a couple minutes more. They had to soak up as much heat as possible before clambering out, it was a miracle in itself her car could perform more than one basic function, might as well bask in it as long as she could.
Her nose curled at the mention of the bowling alley food. "I'm pretty sure those burritos could give you like, cancer, if you ate too many. Carcinogenic burritos. It's an insult to actual Latin food." The options of what to do were very few; Friday or not, their town sucked for rowdy teenage fun. "I was gonna say the arcade in the movie theater could be fun, but half of the games there are either broken down or eat all your quarters. One of them electrocuted me when I tried to use the joystick. We can't have anything nice here, I swear." Cold air was still seeping in somehow from the nooks and crannies of her car, and so Jude took a moment to rub at her face and nose to keep warm, wishing for that perfect west coast weather. Behind her fingers, hazel eyes rolled so hard at Johnathon's suggestion.
A beat passed and her hands dropped to reveal an exceptionally good poker face; Jude was infamous for her deadpan look, like she had daggers for eyes, uncannily serious. "Really? You wanna go skinny dipping? Let's go then, 'cause I don't get cold honey, and I'd pay to see you and your li'l chicken legs jumpin' into subzero water. C'mon flacuchento." Her voice was unwavering as she sat back in the raggedy seats of her Chevy, and she narrowed her eyes at John, waiting for him to squirm or blush. It was almost too easy sometimes. Making people uncomfortable was a talent she aimed to perfect.

[ ooh yeah, well what if she runs away after jonathon finally understands his emotions so he wants to chase her and find her. angst and drama are my best friends, so i'm more than happy to do everything to make these two suffer c': ]
"Yeah, I ate a bowling burrito once and I think it left my system literally a minute later." Oof, it hadn't been a fun experience and it had very much ruined his date with Sandy Davidson. She'd called him gross and left him all lonesome in the dirty bowling alley cubicles - she'd been his ride there too, so he had to do the walk of shame to the phone to ring a mate to pick him up. He wasn't sure he'd live that one down with them. "The arcade is boring because it's rigged. I always lose." Because obviously it was rigged and he wasn't just bad at arcade games. He couldn't wait for the day to abandon this hole in the earth, this patch of absolute nothingness. He knew he'd leave behind people who would miss him, but they became an irrelevant thought when he considered being in the big city. When he thought about making it in basketball.
Honestly, the thought of being naked around Jude seemed... weird. It made him feel nervous. Though he looked at her, with her deadpan face, yet looked at the challenge in her eyes. She knew he hated the cold, and she knew he had chicken legs. He stopped his laughter and stared at her for a few moments before swallowing slowly. He furrowed his bushy black eyebrows and gave her his best version of a deadpan expression. It wasn't so much 'deadpan' as it was teasing - a call for challenge. "Are you gonna dare me? He rose a hand and poked her chest, "Because I don't think you would do it. You don't get cold? Psh, I'll believe it when I see it." He leaned back and folded his hands over his chest. Really, he didn't want to get into the cold. He just wanted to push her buttons. She was a little difficult to do that too though since like him, she also loved to push his buttons. They would end up in this head-butting crossroads. And his eyes narrowed at her as if to say, 'I'm not losing!'. He liked it when she called him words from her native tongue, he had to admit. It was kind of cute, or... well, let's just say it made it seem like he was talking to a flaming haired temptress. But then he'd remember it was Jude in front of him, and he'd feel a bit embarrassed by such thoughts.

ooo i like that. c:< gotta make em suffer. & i was imagining they like, argue at some house party or something Dramatic and public cause thats just always more scandalous )
"You know, I would dare you, but I really don't think you're up for the challenge." Jude was quick to smack his poking hand away, keeping her gaze steady, "Twenty bucks and I'd do it. You know what the heat is like in Havana during the summer? I can survive anything." It took another moment of narrowed eyes and challenging stares before she laughed out loud. This was so stupid. She knew it was a joke, and though the thought of jumping into the river to skinny dip was both cringe-worthy and nerve-wracking, John's bushy determined eyebrows were amusing to her. He was cute, something she rarely admitted. Times like this were what she missed the most as of late; life was so dull in their town, anything truly interesting and it took an hour or more of driving out of the county to head into the bigger cities. Senior year dragged on and on yet she wasn't going anywhere. Nothing here felt like home, just a cage. Her friends and interests helped keep her grounded, but Jude constantly fantasized about getting in this old car and driving as far as it could last. Find somewhere to ditch everything she used to be, and learn how to care and express herself and not live in a house full of ghosts and a town full of desperation. What was left for her here?
The first thing that came to mind was Johnathon, but those hopes were futile. Unrequited middle school crushes would get her nowhere. It felt idiotic at this point; Jude had already dated around, even though nobody really interested her, and sometimes could convince herself she was over it. It was apparent he wasn't as involved in their friendship as she was. The girl didn't have much going for her, as much as she'd like to admit, and having one more person to hold onto meant the world to her. But he had his friends and his life, and whatever girl that interested him that week. Trying to make him stick around felt selfish. A flash of a somber, serious look passed over Jude's face before she smirked at Johnathon and her laughter faded. "Waffles at the diner sound like a better idea. Or bacon and hashbrowns. Or all of it."
Jude didn't wait for his reply before cutting the engine and clambering out of her car. As the morning sun rose higher in the sky, it dissipated a bit of the chill and gave some hope for warmer days yet. The need to get all that emotional b.s. out of her mind was evident, and food sounded good. Food always sounded good. She could probably eat the menu if she put her mind to it. "It's either the diner, or that coffee shop down the street. They have some mean paninis, but their coffee tastes like water."

[ yeah that would be great - a public argument. i was thinking that maybe someone could say to jonathon that he's dating 'the weird girl' and they laugh and tease him and jonathon becomes embarrassed and does something mean to jude to convince them he isn't and that's when the fight kinda starts? ]
Jonathon had to admit, he let out a sigh of relief when Jude finally pulled back. It was as if his heart skipped a beat. Frankly, he didn't know what he'd do if she'd kept up the poker face. He was too stubborn and cheeky to back down yet he was pretty wimpy and didn't for a moment consider jumping naked into the river an option. He turned his nose up to her challenge of twenty bucks, simply because he knew that she was merely joking. He waved his hand dismissively to the offer and said jokingly, "Sure, sure. Keep dreaming." His eyes seemed to smirked just as much as his lips. Though he turned his head away for a moment as he suddenly pictured Jude diving in the water without clothes. He felt his cheeks go up in flames and he was surprised steam didn't start whistling from his ears, oh god, he was a pervert! He gulped and closed his eyes, trying to picture anything else. Cute bunnies, or daisies in the meadows, or Stephen Curry doing a half-court shoot and scoring three points for his team. He was finally able to look her in the eye again without feeling full of shame a few minutes later, though he didn't dare mention anything about what had just happened in his brain.
He had been so distracted he'd never noticed the sudden serious flash from Jude, he merely just nodded to her suggestion. Anything to get out of this car. Was it suddenly hot in there? Or was it just him? He was happy to scramble his way out of the car and into the cooler air outside, though he did notice the pick-up in the temperature as early morning started to tick away. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his jacket and he didn't even think about his answer, "The diner. I feel like eating waffles smothered in maple syrup and bacon," he started walking towards the old beat-down diner. Despite the fact that sign out front was half faded and the only noticeable letters were d, i, and e, he did enjoy their food. "And a milkshake." He added as he pushed open the diner door, a bell in the doorway chimed at their entrance. There was an array of red booths that had cracked plastic seating. A couple of truckies were drinking their coffees and eating their breakfast and a few other people enjoyed their meals. It wasn't lively, though.
"This place is like a Michelin star restaurant, I kid you not," Jonathon leaned close to whisper to Jude as they took their seats. His voice dripped with sarcasm.
