As Christopher listened, he tried to picture what Finn was describing in his mind. He thought a sea monster matched Finn pretty well; a sea monster could show itself if it wanted to, or hide under the water's depths if it was shy. In that way, a sea monster would be exactly like Finn. He noticed that Finn was smiling a little while talking, and he couldn't help but think that was...kinda cute. At that thought, Christopher began to blush a little himself. Hey now, focus! What's gotten into you? He thought, shaking away the feeling. Luckily Finn was too shy to look at him.
Suddenly Finn had glanced at him, and Christopher gave another friendly smile, noticing that he had started to...speak Chris's language, he supposed. And he had to admit it felt nice that the other boy looked at him; it didn't seem to happen often.
Now it was Christopher's turn to answer. He pondered for a moment, eyes tearing away from Finn's face to sweep along the bookshelves in front of them. "I think I'd be a black dragon." he began, tone turning a little more brooding. (This happens sometimes) "Large, dark horns and sharp spikes. Wings that could block the sun. I would be intimidating, but not aggressive. I think others would run away from me, but I wouldn't want that. It would get lonely." After his monologue, he tried to read Finn's expression from the corner of his eye. Oops, I did it again, didn't I? he thought, mentally punishing himself. He didn't want to come off as emo or anything.

For a few seconds, Finn stared at Christopher in shock. The dragon that he described would have been quite a sight to behold; dark and terrifying.
Well, he is pretty intimidating to me at times...
But Finn could see what Christopher meant by being lonely. The librarian truly was not an aggressive person- even though Finn was always nervous around him. He had a gentle nature to him, and Finn liked that. He understood that Christopher's appearance didn't always reflect the way he felt on the inside.
Maybe that was why he was so drawn to him.
Realizing that he had been staring, he immediately jerked his gaze back down to his knees.
"I guess that would get pretty lonely, but...it suits you."

Christopher felt even more embarrassed as he caught Finn staring at him. Argh, why did I say that? It must have been very surprising. He instinctively pulled his knees up and draped his arms across them.
What Finn said next surprised him. But Christopher was a little confused; did Finn understand him? Or did he also think Chris was intimidating? He decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"Oh, you think so? Thanks." he said, turning back towards the other boy and recovering his charming smile.
Perhaps that was enough conversation about the book. As much as Christopher was enjoying talking to Finn, he needed to close up the library for the day. And find something to eat!
He stood up and looked down at Finn. "Well, it's about closing time. But I don't want you to think I'm kicking you out or anything! You can come back anytime, I'll be here." he chuckled, reaching a hand out to help the other boy up.
(I didn't really have any more ideas to continue the conversation, but if you have any shoot!)

Finn hesitated, eyeing Christopher's outstretched hand for a moment.
Am I about to...touch his hand?
He nervously took the man's hand, the book gripped firmly in the other; and as soon as he was on his feet, he immediately let go of Christopher, using that hand to adjust his beanie again.
"It's fine, I have to go home pretty soon anyways." His voice sounded dull, masking his reluctance to leave.
Finn walked passed the numerous bookshelves, but instead of heading for the door, he walked over to the checkout desk.
"Um, I think I'll leave this here..."he said. Then he placed the book on the desk, avoiding eye contact with Christopher. "But...I'll come back and read it some more..."
"It really is a good book, so...thanks."
And with that, Finn turned and walked swiftly out the door, before Christopher could reply. The evening sun was sinking below the line of trees outside, casting a reddish glow over everything. But the glow couldn't mask the blush blossoming over the boy's cheeks. He jogged down the path, hoping his face would return to normal by the time he got home. But even though the blush was temporary, the smile on the boy's face refused to fade.

Christopher followed Finn to the door and waved at him as he left. After the boy had gone, he closed the door and walked across the room over to the front desk, where Finn had left the book. Typically customers would check out the book rather than leave it here to read later, but either Finn didn't know that or...
Maybe he wanted an excuse to come back? was Chris's thought. But now he was thinking ridiculous things. The boy was shy, there was no way he would purposefully leave it here for that reason. But that didn't stop Christopher from hoping that Finn would come back. He had to admit it was nice being around him, maybe even more so than other customers...
Shaking his head to get rid of these distracting thoughts, he picked up the book and set it in an alcove behind the desk. For safe keeping. Whenever Finn decided to come back, that book would be waiting for him right within Christopher's reach.
Finally, Christopher stretched and closed the library, locking the door. His belly rumbled, signalling it was time to eat. "I'm in the mood for cheese cauliflower tonight." he mumbled to himself, heading towards the basement. "It's my favorite." (heheh)

*Blublublublublublublubluuuuuuu time passes to the next day*
The sun was quite high in the sky today, blazing brilliantly. It's heat beat down on the valley below; to Jolene, this meant that it was currently noon.
She knelt down below a particularly tall green bean trellis, meticulously picking any suitable beans she could find. Sweat beaded her forehead and the back of her neck- the straw hat she was wearing only helped with the heat a little.
We could use a bit of rain right about now...
Jolene knew that somewhere on the other side of the expansive farmland, Cyrus was showing the new farmhands around. It was good that they were getting new workers; with the amount that Cyrus had now, it was grueling to get everything done during the day. Up ahead a little ways from where Jolene crouched was another farmhand who had been here a bit longer than the new ones- John. He was very happy that new workers would help take the load off; he snapped his beans cheerfully, a hum resonating from his throat. While Jolene would normally be acting the same way, the heat was sapping her energy.
Luckily, my break is coming soon!

The next day, Christopher could be found sitting behind the front desk of the library once again. And just like the day before, he was reading the fantasy novel he had shown to Finn. As he was reading throughout the morning, his thoughts kept going back to the day before, and the boy that was there that afternoon. Maybe it was because of the book, but he couldn't seem to get him off his mind. There was something about Finn that was...charming to Christopher, or something like that. The way the boy kept all his thoughts to himself was a bit bothersome, but the way he kept blushing was almost...cute. Of course, he was certain that it wasn't him making Finn blush; it was just Finn's shy nature. Though Christopher couldn't help but feel like maybe he'd like to see the boy blushing at him again. But no, there was no reason for wanting that, it's just that he's been a little lonely at the library, and he likes to be around others...
And those were the thoughts that had been circling Chris's head that Tuesday. As it was drawing nearer to noon, his stomach suddenly growled loudly, jarring him from his reading. He jerked his head up from where he was holding the book in his lap, and looked around for the clock on the wall. It's about time for my lunch break. He thought, closing the book and carefully placing it in the spot he had chosen for it last night, behind the desk. He stood up and stretched, that nice stretchy feeling rushing through his body. (lol wtf)
Christopher walked down the stairs to the basement that he lived in, heading for the kitchen and opening the fridge. "I'm out of cauliflower." he muttered to himself as he scanned the refrigerator's contents. Cauliflower was his favorite food, so he figured he may as well go out and get some during his break. I know Jolene will have some, he thought to himself, heading towards the door. Considering it's in season and all. I'll run by and say hi. As he was just about to leave he realized it was probably really warm outside, if not hot. So he took his jacket off and placed it on the conveniently placed coat-rack nearby, and walked out the library's door.
It was pretty hot outside, he realized as he took a stroll towards Evergreen farm on the other side of town. It was a good thing he didn't bring his jacket. And besides, maybe it would be good for his pale skin to get a little sun, that is if he didn't get sunburned in the process. As he came up towards the farm he could see rows and rows of spring crops all over the vast farmland; finding Jolene might be a bit harder than he anticipated. "Hey Jolene! You around?!" he called out, hoping someone would hear him.

Jolene was filling her basket of beans when she heard a familiar voice call her name. Standing, she noticed her friend Christopher at the edge of the field.
Oh good, I could use someone to spend my break with!
Jolene didn't know why Chris was here, but she had a feeling that Cauliflower would be involved. It was his favorite food, after all. She waved, smiling, and then hiked over to where Christopher was. She held the wicker basket with both arms.
"Hey, Chris! Let's meet inside. I need to set these beans down."
Her tone was cheery but out of breath. Without waiting for Christopher, she huffed past him and towards the large farmhouse.
(It short but I got job done)

Christopher spotted Jolene walking over to him. Good, I didn't have to hunt for her! he thought, waving at the approaching farmer. She looked worn out, and that bean basket seemed heavy.
"Hey Jolene! Need help carrying that?" he asked, following after her as she headed toward the farmhouse.
(It k! Mine is SHORTER!)

"As a matter of fact I do, thanks!" and with that, she plopped the basket into Christopher's arms. Then she continued into the farmhouse. The house was quite big, with three stories. Opening the door, Jolene stepped inside, beckoning Christopher to follow him.
The interior of the house was roomy. The kitchen and living room were connected, and a large dining table stretched between them.
"Just set the basket on the table. I'll take care of it from there."
Once inside, Jolene walked over to the nearest dining chair and took a seat, visibly exhausted but not making a show out of it.
"So, what brings you here during my break?" she asked, wiping her forehead with her arm.

Christopher caught the basket Jolene dumped into his arms, which immediately seared with pain. Heavy lifting was definitely not his strong suit, but he trudged after her anyway as she opened the door for him, heaving the entire way to the dining table and dropping the basket on top. "Whew..." he sighed, rubbing his now sore arms.
Jolene had sat down in a nearby dining chair, looking exhausted. Christopher pulled up another chair and sat facing her. He placed his hands on his knees. "Well, I don't want to be a bother but I ran out of cauliflower and thought you guys might have some. I'll buy!" he responded to her question, giving a friendly smile.
(Is it weird for me to have a crush on my own character?)

(Nah XD)
"I had a feeling that's why you came," she said, chuckling. "We have plenty. I made sure of that, since I know it's your favorite food." Then she got up from the table and searched the fridge for some fresh cauliflower.
While she was doing that, something suddenly ran into the room from upstairs. It was a golden retriever, the farm dog. He scampered excitedly over to Christopher and immediately put his front paws up on Chris's lap, licking his face in greeting. Jolene noticed this and called over her shoulder, "Butter! Down!"
Butter reluctantly did what he was told and returned to the floor, but that didn't stop his tail from wagging crazily. He licked Christopher's pant leg, still excited from having a visitor.

Christopher grinned at Jolene. Of course she knew why he was here, and it was so nice of her to keep some cauliflower on hand for him. "Thanks." he said gratefully. She was such a good friend.
Suddenly Chris shouted "Woah!" as the dog came out of nowhere and attacked him with slobber. When he realized what was happening, he chuckled and wrapped his arms around the dog, petting him before Jolene scolded him.
"Hey Butter, nice to see you too." He greeted after the dog had gotten back down to the floor, still trying to give as much affection as possible. He reached down and ruffled the top of his head. "You're actually a good boy though, aren't you?" he cooed with a high-pitched voice fit for speaking to a baby.
As Jolene was rummaging through the fridge, Christopher looked up at her and pondered for a moment about his next question. Jolene was his friend, so he shouldn't feel embarrassed asking about this, but he was still a bit shy about it.
"Hey Jolene." he started asking to her back. "Do you know a guy named Finn?"

Jolene chuckled when Christopher began cooing over the dog. That dog always managed to win over the hearts of the people he met. He knew it too, and took advantage of that fact. Either that, or he was just really happy to meet people.
Cyrus had found Butter as a stray while on a trip to Zuzu city. The poor thing was just a puppy, and Cyrus had immediately decided to take him home as a member of the family. That was what the Rivers family did; they took in people who needed them and welcomed them into their homes. Jolene was grateful for that.
Then Christopher asked about Finn, which gave Jolene a chance to stop being distracted. "Hmmm," she took a wrapped up bunch of cauliflower and set it down on the table between them, then took a seat, a finger placed upon her cheek in thought. "The guy from the Jones family? Yeah, I think I know a little bit about him. Why do you ask?" She wondered if Christopher had made a new friend. Jolene felt that it would be good for Chris to come out of his shell and socialize more, even though he normally talked to her.

Christopher eyed the bundle of cauliflower Jolene set on the table. It looks delicious. he thought. But he couldn't drool over it yet, he had to take it home and cook it of course! With cheese!!
Then Jolene answered his question. So she does know him. he thought. He hoped she didn't think anything of it. He was just curious about the boy, that was all. But knowing her, she would probably love for Christopher to make some new friends. Also, his last name was Jones. Chris couldn't help but feel delighted about knowing that, like it was some kind of cool secret.
"Well, he came by the library last night." Christopher began, looking anywhere but Jolene's face. "He seemed pretty chill. We talked about a novel I really like." Then Christopher shook his head and chuckled. "He's a bit silly, though. He doesn't look at your face; he's so shy. And he left the book I checked out to him. Just left it right on the front desk!" He looked up at Jolene, not realizing the awed expression on his face. "He said he'd come back, though."

Jolene listened to Christopher, her chin balanced on the backs of her hands in an attentive position. She smiled and chose not to mention the fact that Chris wasn't looking at her. He obviously admired this guy named Finn, at least a little. She decided that it would be best to encourage their potential friendship.
"That's perfect," she said. "It means he'll come back, right? Then you'll get the opportunity to see him again." Though this was what she wanted, part of her was a little sad that Christopher might have someone else to talk to. She felt guilty for thinking that though; she had Cyrus to talk to when Chris wasn't around. But she still felt lonely from time to time, despite being surrounded by people...
"...You know, I see him sometimes when I walk down the beach. He must go there a lot. Not surprising, really. It's a pretty relaxing place to go."

Christopher reached a hand behind his head, a little embarrassed about all that he'd just said about Finn. "I guess you're right, haha." he said. Jolene was being pretty supportive, though. Wait...that sounded a little too supportive. "Wait, the oppotunity?" he exclaimed, waving his hands in front of him in denial. "It's not like I'm dying to see him or anything! I just think he's interesting, that's all!" His blush was extremely apparent, now.
"But I mean, I wouldn't mind being better friends with him." He continued, resting his hands on his lap. "We haven't really had many conversations before, but now that I've talked to him I think he's a pretty cool guy. I guess I'd like to get to know him better."
His gaze had traveled to his knees while he was talking, but then he glanced up at Jolene again. "You think I should go to the beach and try to meet him?" It seemed like that was what she was suggesting. Did she want him to follow the guy?
Though it didn't seem like a bad idea to Christopher. He didn't go to the beach all that often, what with being in the library all the time. It was kind of funny; when he lived in the city he always wanted to go on trips to the beach, but now that he lived right next to one he was content with being indoors. But maybe it would be nice to take walks there more, and if he happened to come across Finn while he was there...that would be pretty nice.
(I tried to start making longer posts again lol. Sorry if this feels weird or jumbly, for some reason I can't do words right)

(It's okay. I've found that shorter but more meaningful posts are better than straight up essays. I don't have the stamina or writing capabilities for that XD)
Jolene quietly tried to cover up her laugh when she saw Christopher's blush. She wondered what he was getting so worked up for. Finn was just a guy that Chris wanted to be friends with, right? But Jolene had the suspicion that there were extra feelings that Chris was suppressing, whether he knew it or not. She pushed that thought away, deciding that it was probably best not to worry about it. If Christopher had something he wanted to confide her in, then he probably would. Right?
In response to his question, she said, "Well I'm not saying you should stalk him of course, just pointing out that he seems to like it there. Honestly, that's all I really know about him. Besides the fact that he works at Jojamart of all places. But anyways," now it was her turn to avoid eye contact. "There's nothing wrong with wanting to know him better. Maybe he...could use a friend."
Her lips pulled up into a sly smile then, and she was back to her normal self. "I wonder if he's as shy around others as he is around you?"

Christopher stared down at his hands, clasped in his lap. Jolene seemed to be pretty encouraging about befriending Finn. She might be right, he could use a friend. He might be lonely. he thought. He could understand; he got pretty lonely pretty often at the library. Maybe I could be his friend.
At Jolene's next comment, Christopher's gaze shot up once again. "Of course he must be! He's a shy guy, it's just how he is."
"Well, that's what I assumed anyway..."
He ruffled the back of his hair again, a nervous habit of his. "I mean, there's nothing special about me. Nothing that would make him blush as much as he did, anyway."
He blushed a lot. A nagging voice appeared in his head, one that sounded suspiciously like Jolene's. Even for someone as shy as him.

"Oh come on Chris, you're special in your own way. You like cauliflower more than anyone else! That's special, right?" She gave a small chuckle at that. "You have plenty of qualities that would make people want to be friends with you, I'm sure of it."
And with that, she gently pushed the wrapped up cauliflower across the table in Christopher's direction. "Speaking of cauliflower, you can take it. The usual pay will do." She gave a warm, friendly smile, her blue-green eyes guarded.
I don't know why I'm trying to persuade him to make a new friend when I don't want to lose him myself, she thought. It's no use; I care about him too much. It would be good for him to have more people in his life. I need to stop being so selfish.
It was obvious at this point that Jolene was lost in thought; but not because of the topic at hand. Talking about Finn had reminded her of something that she couldn't shake from her mind. Something peculiar that had happened recently.

Christopher blushed and chuckled alongside Jolene as she made the comment about the cauliflower. "Yeah, I guess so. Thanks Jolene."
He grabbed the bunch of cauliflower and examined it, grinning with excitement at getting to eat it soon. (lol he ridic) "This looks great, as usual. Thanks!" But as he pulled out his wallet and thumbed through for some money, he noticed that Jolene had stopped talking, and was staring as though she were lost in thought.
Whenever Jolene looked like this, Christopher wondered if she was remembering something unpleasant. They were good friends, but Christopher still didn't know a whole lot about Jolene, particularly her past before the farm. They simply hadn't discussed it; Christopher didn't want to pry either, not if Jolene wasn't willing to talk. So rather than inquire directly, he would just be kind and mildly concerned.
"Something on your mind?"

Jolene stared down at her hands for a while, before Christopher jogged her mind back into reality. "Ah, nothing really. I hope it goes well between you and Finn." she leaned over the table a little, winking at him. "If you do meet him at the beach, tell me how it goes," she whispered teasingly. Then she laughed, returning to her normal self once again. "Well, I guess my break is going to end soon. Enjoy the cauliflower-oh, hey! The egg festival is coming soon. Want to hang out then? I'm sure everyone else will be there." Since it was a small community, everyone usually showed up to the town festivals. In this town, everyone knew everyone else. That is, mostly everyone. (Ugggh. I rewrote this post several times because I had no idea where I wanted this to go. I have some plot ideas, but I don't know how to execute them or if they're even fleshed out enough yet DX It's probably time to wrap up this encounter and move on to something else. (GURL U FINE WE FINE IT FINE WE'RE GREAT Christopher blushed at Jolene's comment. Why did it seem so much like she was encouraging him to... make a move? That's totally not what it was! "I will, but don't look at me like that! This is just a friend thing, okay?"
Oh yeah, the egg festival was going to be there soon! "Yeah we can meet up, it'll be great." he responded to her, grinning. He laid the money on the table and picked up the bunch of cauliflower once again. He stood up and stretched like he apparently always does since I'm not creative. "Thanks again for the cauliflower. It was nice seeing you!" he said cheerfully, and as he walked over to the door he added "I'll come see you again soon, okay? Bye!"
He walked out the door and went back on his way to the library. A lot of things Jolene had said echoed in his mind. Either way, he was hungry! Time to get back and cook! (I'm sorry this is so bad it's like a drunk person wrote it. The next post will be better I proommisssee also yeah it'd be cool to move on with the story however you wanna dooooo)

That evening, Finn could be seen on the beach, naturally. The sun was casting scarlet ribbons across the sky as it began to sink into the sea. Finn sat at the edge of the wooden dock, letting his feet dangle over the water, watching the sunset.
It was steadily getting darker outside, but Finn was fine with that. He liked hanging out at the beach, and it's not like he was wanting to be at home. So he stared out over the water, fiddling with a seashell in his hands, and thought about life. He thought about his shift at Joja-mart tomorrow; he thought about the upcoming egg festival; he also thought about the library, and its librarian. But out here, it was deserted; the fishing shack nearby was closed and no one was making their way there. So no one would see Finn blushing again, or him quickly shaking his head in embarrassment of said blush.

Christopher walked along the bookshelves in his library, swiping the duster along the wood and the backs of the books that stocked them. This had to be done every once in a while, or else it would get to the point where Christopher would have a sneezing fit every time he took out a book. So some days, after the library was closed and he had straightened up, he would do little maintenance chores like this.
After he was done, he put the duster back in its place in the supply closet and looked at the clock on the wall. It would be getting dark not too long from then, so he decided to go on a little walk before getting dinner. It wasn't too warm to wear his jacket at that point, so he kept it on as he walked outside.
"You know, I see him sometimes when I walk down the beach. He must go there a lot ." Jolene's voice echoed in his mind as he walked. That's right, she had mentioned that Finn frequented the beach. And she seemed to greatly encourage Chris to go meet him. And I wouldn't mind another chance to talk to him. he thought, heart beating just a bit faster. And so he found himself walking down the southern bridge, on the off chance that he might find the boy there.
When Chris got there, he was met with a beautiful sunset sinking over a vast blue horizon. He stared for a little while, and becoming distracted, he began to walk along the seaside. He kept his hands in his pockets as the ocean breeze tugged at his hair, and he surveyed all the beautiful sights that he'd been missing out on. I really need to come here more often.
Eventually the dock came into his line of vision, and his heart skipped a beat when he found a familiar figure sitting at the edge. Pleased, he began jogging towards Finn, the dark figure silhouetted against the setting sun. As he drew closer he greeted him in a cheery voice.
"Hey, Finn! Nice to see you here!"
