[skyblaze - ] Faye watched the tail lights of the truck fade into the distance against the darkness surrounding them. She sighed, well there was no going back now, they were stranded in the middle of the jungle with mediocre supplies. She turned to face Hunter and nodded in agreement, slinging her own duffle bag across her body. "Well...what should we do about shelter?" She asked him curiously. Even though there wasn't much light left, Faye could still see the outlines of trees not too far away. The bus had dropped them in a small clearing, out in the open and left vulnerable to the dangers of the Congo basin. Faye reached into the side pocket of her backpack and pulled out a mini flashlight and quickly switched it on. There wasn't much light coming from it but it was better than none at all. Faye flashed it around the clearing they were in, no animals in sight, that seemed like a good thing.Hunter paused for a second to think. Staying on the ground wasn't an option, at least not tonight without a proper shelter. They'd be killed by a predator, if army ants didn't find them first. They would need something to cover themselves or the bugs would literally eat them alive. Finally, he said, "We should climb. Find somewhere high and sleep in a tree, at least for tonight. There's not enough light to build a proper shelter. I know I brought a couple blankets, to protect us from the bugs and the wind. We can make a tarp. We just need to find a tree big enough to hold both of us." He sighed as he looked through his pack. He had brought just 4 water bottles with him, along with the canteen in his duffel bag. After a few days, thirst would become their biggest enemy. "Let's go." He said, getting back to his feet and dusting himself off. "The sooner we find a tree, the better." He said. "We should conserve that, by the way." He motioned at the flashlight. "It's our only solid source of light. We'll need it for emergencies." Hunter hated the idea of walking through the rainforest in the darkness, but it was better than draining their only real source of light. He shuddered at the nightmarish thought of having to run in an emergency by the light of the lighter, or worse, a match.

Devin was staring at the clock on the far wall of the classroom, watching the time slowly tick by, class would be over in about ten minutes, but that didn't seem to come soon enough. He felt his phone go off again and pulled it from his pocket, reading over Reina's text. He thought for a second, trying to think of what a girl like her would want in return for (possibly) not ruining his life. 'Well if you wanna grab lunch sometime together I would be down for that', Devin texted back. He stayed on his phone, scrolling through his sport highlights app, the Pittsburgh Penguins played last night and Devin started watching the highlights since he was working. Usually Devin wasn't the social type, but he figure a girl like Reina wouldn't take up his offer.

Maya slammed on her dark grey elastic suit and her black mask. Pretty golden spark climbed the sides of her suit and the wrists to her gloves. She let her dark hair fly behind her as she jumped out the window with her backpack strapped to her back. The sun was setting behind the buildings. She loved the fact that she could technically fly too. She leapt easily from building to building, no matter how far the ground was in between. She smiled mischievously, as she looked around the busy streets for havoc to cause tonight.

She commented, hoping he could see the tree she was talking about. Faye hadn't really processed that they were lost in the jungle yet, she was more focused on making it to dawn then thinking about how terrified she actually should be with the situation she was currently in. She took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts and focus, trying to remember what other things she packed in her bag.

Lindy's head has never stopped buzzing since the news wandered over and slapped her across the face. Her mind bent over itself trying to convince her that it's not true, it can't be, it doesn't make sense! Still, she struggled to drag out of denial in order to face the harsh reality - her best friend was dead.
Oh god. The thought squeezed her chest so hard she couldn't breathe. Laney. Dead. God.
She's always heard of things like this happening - how could she not? But, like a fool, she lulled herself into that sweet embrace of security knowing that, no, nothing like that could ever happen to her. Not her friends. She'd notice, she'd do something, she would've stopped it, she could've stopped it, she should have -
And it was that, the guilt, that threatened to eat her alive. Not one moment passed when she wasn't scouring the days in her mind before Laney's passing, searching for signs, for clues, for things she overlooked, missed, or just plain ignored. Not once did she not think: could I have stopped it? If I was observant enough, supportive enough, good enough -
It hurt. What's worse is that she couldn't find a single thing in her memory that suggested Laney was hurting enough to say goodbye to her life forever. Am I just that terrible of a friend...? she thought, agonized.
She saw her soccer teammate Cole in the cafeteria a couple of days after the funeral. Despite her own pain, her heart ached for him.
"Hey man," she said, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "I'm - I'm sorry about your cousin."

"I think that works." He mused, turning to look at her, only to realize he couldn't see her. For one wild moment, he thought he'd lost her, then he could just make out her outline beside him. "Let's go closer and take a look." He said, trying to calm himself down. As they walked, he almost instinctively reached to take her hand. In other circumstances he never would have, but he'd rather be embarrassed in the dark than lost and alone. "We shouldn't get separated." He said.

Cole tensed up when Lindy touched his shoulder, he quickly turned around and relaxed a bit seeing it was her and not someone else giving him fake sympathy to make themselves feel better about what had happened. Cole knew Lindy, Laney and her had been friends for as long as he could remember. "Hey. Uh...thanks...are you doing alright?" He asked her, wondering how she was dealing with the grief. He wasn't doing so well with that part, all the confusion and anger pent up, too many feelings and thoughts in Cole's brain, but he was usually quiet, so most people didn't notice the change. The lunch line moved up and Cole grabbed a try and looked over the food set out, it was pizza or chicken tenders today, Cole grabbed some pizza and a bag of chips, waiting like the rest of the students in line to check out. Then Cole remembered what he was thinking about beforehand, it was what he discovered yesterday when he had to go over to Laney's house. He debated on whether or not he should tell Lindy.

Lindy tried for a smile, but it felt like she was stretching on a tight mask that pulled uncomfortably at her face. "As alright as I can be," she said. "Still... reeling, I guess. I'm still wondering why, like everyone else, and - you know. If I could've done something." Her voice grew heavy, but then she blinked and shook her head. "Sorry, didn't mean to unload that onto you. How are you doing?" She pulled many a chicken tender onto her plate, craving meat in her emotional distress. She looked over at Cole, unsure. "Listen, if you ever need someone to talk to... I'm always free," she said softly. Laney may have been her best friend, but she knew Cole well enough from soccer and subsequent relation to Laney to want to reach out.

Shane was walking across campus, back to his dorm where he could finally chill out for the rest of the day and eat the mound of snacks he had been hoarding for this weekend. He walked into the building and up the stairs to his floor, taking his room key out of his pocket and unlocking the dorm, he wasn't surprised to see that his roommate wasn't there, he was always out playing soccer with his buddies. Plopping onto his bed, Shane pulled out his phone to check his police radar app to see if his arch nemesis was at it again, trying to ruin his junk food filled weekend. He pulled out a package of oreos and started munching on those.

[ ooh really? I think I'll check it out when I visit the library tomorrow then, thanks! lol what's the missing .5 points for though? ]
"Wow, really?" Kaleb exclaimed in surprise, then quickly lowered his voice as he took notice that other people in the room had begun to look at him. Not that it mattered what they thought of him anyway - he planned to leave Colorado with few connections, as he always did. "I moved here from Queens, although I have visited Brooklyn a few times. Mostly just for the amusement parks, but sometimes I went to the Brooklyn Bridge with my dad," the green eyed boy replied, although he did leave out the part where half of it was on a chase for a high class monster. Somehow he didn't think that would be the best thing to include, especially when it was going so well. Kaleb even had the courage to meet the Christina's eyes for a few fleeting seconds, and he found himself charmed by the way how they had a little life in them, if only a little, as if she was talking about something important to her. "Why did you move from Brooklyn anyway? Most people usually don't move from a city with such great sights."

[lol I had to read it for school which took part of the fun out of it]
She took interest in his conversation when Kaleb talked about Brooklyn, she didn't miss it but it was nice to have someone else who appreciated the city. Christina tensed a bit a his last question, she wasn't one to talk about herself much, especially her life before she moved to Colorado. "Uh...family reasons..." Christina replied quietly, looking away from Kaleb as she answered the question. Glancing up at the clock in the front of the room she noticed that class was going to end soon. She tried to quickly change the subject back to their project. "So did you want to meet up some time to work on the project?" She asked him, glancing back over the sheet.

[ ohh i see. tbh school does take a lot of fun out of reading some books that you just want to enjoy haha. like some of my favorite books are animal farm and flowers for algernon but it sucked to have to have to do some kind of analysis question after each chapter rip ]
"Oh. I get it, I move all the time for my family's business," Kaleb replied and nodded solemnly in response, noticing how Christina seemed to shut down from his question. Although he was disappointed, he wasn't the type to pry into other people's businesses, like how disturbed would he be if people found out about his personal life? After seeing her glance up at the clock, Kaleb followed suit and checked the time as well, which to his surprise, had passed by rather quickly. "Oh um, sure. Maybe we could meet up at like the library or a cafe or something to work on it? I think I'm free later this afternoon if you want to get started. Or some other time if you want. It'd give me a chance to catch up on the book anyway," he said, rubbing the back of his neck anxiously as he noted that he was somewhat rambling. He didn't want to seem too pushy. And he wasn't sure at all if it was appropriate to meet at each others' houses yet seeing as they had just meant each other. In addition to this, truth to be told, Kaleb hadn't even worked on group projects a lot, seeing as half of the time in New York he wasn't even at school, a fact that he hoped wasn't painfully obvious.

She felt herself turning pink while rubbing the back of her neck. It wasn't every day that she was actually asked to go somewhere. Most guys just wanted to talk and not do anything. She chuckled a little bit while feeling a little bold. Maybe this was worth a shot. 'I'd like that, where would you want to go? I'll buy.' Reina knew well that it wouldn't be fair to expect more from him, she figured since she had the means, she may as well use them. There was nothing more stressful for guys like being expected to pay for things. She didn't think it was fair to him.

She started walking with him towards the larger tree, listening closely to the sounds as they walked, hoping they didn't hear a loud growling noise or something like that. Cole nodded as he scooted up in line, he thought about what she said and how Lindy was also wondering why and he had that sinking feeling in his throat, he had found that clue and was thinking about telling Lindy. She would be the only one who understood how important it was and how little it made sense. "There's something I think I should tell you." Cole whispered to her. He walked up to the cashier and slid his student ID through the slot to pay for his lunch. He waited by the cashier for Lindy, hoping she heard what he said in the line.

Christina nodded back to him, starting to pack her stuff away in her bag. She took the assignment sheet and tucked it into her folder with a bunch of her other papers. She thought for a moment about what she was doing after school, no work and she didn't have to check in on any other vampires or werewolves today. "Yeah, after school in the library sounds good with me. Do you know where the library's at?" She asked him, not trying to sound condescending, but it was in the very back of the school and she'd rather get work done and get out then wait there for thirty minutes because he couldn't find it. She slowly stood up from her seat as most of the students started to gather up near the door to leave.

Devin started to pack his things away into his backpack and felt his phone buzz again. He read over Reina's text, extremely surprised that she offered to pay for lunch, he had never had that happen before and seemed a bit interested now, Reina didn't remind him of most preppy girls at his school. He tried thinking of a place for lunch, of course Devin would rather go to a burger place, but he didn't think Reina would like it there, plus he had a game this weekend and should probably try to eating something moderately healthy. 'There's this cafe in town that's pretty good.' Devin texted back to her.

Hunter nodded while keeping his eyes in front of him, making sure they didn't trip over the many roots and fallen branches that littered the jungle floor. "A small one, thankfully." He replied. "Nothing too cozy, but it'll keep me from freezing to death." Thankfully, the nature of the trip had led to him bringing ample blankets and warm clothing. They wouldn't be very comfortable, but at least they would be protected from the elements. He stopped as they reached the tree, and he looked up at it. The lowest branch was thick and sturdy. It was low enough that they'd be able to make it up, but high enough that potential predators would keep away. "This should do." He decided. He slung the duffel bag's strap around his shoulder. "Ladies first." He said with a smile.

[ oo which author/trilogy? also i just checked it out today and even tho i've only read like 3 chapters so far it's pretty good!! ]
Kaleb, instead of taking the more organized approach as Christina had, chose to chuck the assignment sheet directly into his backpack after heaving his Jansport in front of him onto the desk, and while he did try to put it in as neatly as he could, he ended up bending the corners and leaving it with a few more wrinkles than it originally had. After closing the pen Christina had gave him, Kaleb was about to place it in his backpack in the same care and fashion as he had done with his papers, but paused after hearing her question. He tried to think back to when he had first received a tour of the school, but honestly he had been way too distracted by the colors of the trees and tired by his previous night's activity of tracking to really listen to his guide. "Oh, uh, now that I think about it I guess I don't know where the library is," he answered sheepishly, fingering and twirling the pen almost absentmindedly. "Do you think you could show me later, or give me the directions?"

"Alrighty then." Faye gave a weak smile and started climbing up the tree, digging her boot into the bark to get a good boost up so she could grab the branch. Quickly she climbed up to it, standing near it at the part where it connected to the trunk of the tree. She looked around and could make out a couple sturdy branches through the thick darkness. She chose one and zipped open the cover around her sleeping bag, taking it out and laying it on the branch. Quickly Faye strung her duffle bag on a branch above her and took a small piece of rope out of her bag. Getting on all fours, Faye crawled over to her sleeping bag and quickly snuggled into it, then moved her backpack in place so she could use that as a pillow. Then she reached across and tied herself around the branch, even though they weren't too high up, Faye was a restless sleeper and heights weren't really her thing.

Laurie Halse Anderson is another beauty, so is Lauren Oliver, and The Unwind Dystology is 100% gold...sorry I love books more than most things lol]
Christina stood up, slinging her backpack over her shoulders and checking to make sure that she had her phone in her pocket as usual. She glanced up and nodded, hearing Kaleb's question. She wasn't surprised by his answer, some of the teachers here didn't know where the library was, the only reason Christina knew was because of the tiny amount of people who went there, that was often where she would go meet up with other monster if they had an emergency. "Yeah, you just take a left out of here, walk all the way to the end of the hall, go right and walk all the way back." Christina informed him. She started inching towards the door since her next class was on the other side of the school and she had to walk quite a bit. She looked back at Kaleb right before the ball rang. "I'll see you after school." She said with the smallest of smiles and walked out towards the door.

It was good timing, as the sun had finally set, and there was no light to be seen. He settled down on the branch adjacent to hers, laying out the sleeping back. He then zipped open the duffel bag to take out his blankets. It wasn't particularly cold, but it would keep out the bugs. He draped the blankets over the two of them in a way that it would cover them from the elements, before finally laying down and looking at the clear, star studded sky. A view he never would've seen back home. "Some trip this turned out to be, huh?" He asked with a smile.

[no prob!]
Faye woke up as she felt the sun in her eyes, she blinked a few times, not remembering that she fell asleep in a tree. It took her a few seconds to recollect all that had happened last night. Well, they had daylight and need to move, but where? And in which direction? They didn't have a map, their best hope was to keeping walking and pray they ran into a small tribe or village or anything that had people, at least the locals would probably know which direction to go in to end up in the same town as their group. Undoing the rope around her waist, Faye tried to refrain from looking down at the ground. She kept her eyes on her sleeping bag as she slowly started climbing out of it, trying not to shake the tree much in case it was crawling with bugs and who knows what else. She grabbed her backpack and took a swig of water, letting out a sigh of relief as she quenched her thirst.
