Faye nodded in surprise, what a coincidence that she ended up having someone from her high school to talk to down in Africa, of course she remembered the trip being advertised around the community, but there were more than a few high schools in her district and a lot of adults signed up too. "Yeah! I'm gonna be a senior this year." She replied to him. One of the group leaders started talking over the intercom about sites they were going to see on the drive up to the village. Faye half listened to him, she wasn't really interested in the city as they drove through, she was ready to see some wildlife.

It was only when the bus began its way out of the city that Hunter began to notice something odd. There weren't as many people on the bus as he had originally thought. And everyone who was on the bus seemed to be in uniform. "Strange group we have here, eh?" He commented to Faye.

Faye nodded in agreement then she thought about his last statement for a second and she looked around the bus, except for Hunter she didn't recognize anyone else. She stared into space strangely for a second. "Yeah...weird group." She replied to him, moving around, trying to see the group leader's face to relieve her worries and be sure that was their leader. Then the driver announced the town they were staying in for the night and Faye perked up right away, that sounded nothing like the place she remembered hearing from the itinerary before the flight. "Wait a second...did you hear the place we're going? She asked Hunter, worry present in her voice.

"That's way off the beaten path. We were supposed to be heading to "Madimba!" He replied, trying to stay calm. "Don't worry, I'll go talk to the driver." He said with a reassuring smile, although it served to reassure him just as much. He got up and made his way over to the driver. "Excuse me, but there seems to have been some miscommunication. The Edmonton group should be heading the other way." He said. The driver looked up blankly for a second. It was clear his knowledge of English was little to none, unlike the driver they had been promised. "Group?" He repeated. He then shook his head. "Supply truck. To jungle. No people." He retorted gruffly, and then turned back to the road. Hunter swallowed. He had understood enough to know where they were heading. He made his way to the back of the bus, sliding back into the seat. "I think this is the wrong bus." He explained to Faye, struggling to keep calm. "This bus is heading straight for the rainforest. A one way trip."

"Yeah, I haven't," Kaleb said sheepishly, scratching the back of his dark brown covered head with embarrassment. "I just moved here for my family's work so the only thing I know about this book is that they made a movie out of it with Leonardo DiCaprio." Well, the bit about his family's work wasn't exactly a lie, but it wasn't the truth either. It was better than outright saying that he was here on an order to kill. "But um, thanks," he replied gratefully. Kaleb was glad that the english teacher hadn't stuck him with a classmate that was a monster to work with. As he noted Christina grab a pen out of her bag, he realized that it might be a good idea to do so as well, and started to rummage around in his gray jansport an attempt to find one. Kaleb didn't consider himself an irresponsible person by any means, but when his backpack refused to produce anything but various weapons and papers and a single broken pencil, he couldn't help but wonder how he had made it this far through the school day. "Hey can I borrow a pen or something? I promise to give it back at the end of the period," the brown haired boy asked hopefully.

Devin nodded slowly, he could totally tell that she wasn't letting on how bad the pain was, years of hockey pucks to the gut made Devin strong but he knew that cringing face she had on from a mile away, but he wasn't about to pry and keep asking. He ran back to his car quickly and brought her a piece of paper. "Here's my number in case you really do need that ride or you've got some crazy medical thing. Oh, I'm Devin by the way, Devin West. Uh, yeah, really really sorry about that, practice kinda wore me out, but yeah...let me know if you need something." He said to Reina, reaching out and giving her the piece of paper with his phone number on it. Reina raised an eyebrow to him as he handed her his number. Okay, she had to admit it was a little convenient for him to be handing out his number to a stranger like herself. She rubbed the back of her neck, trying not to over think the whole thing. "Thanks, I'll keep it in mind." she said softly as she stood up a little straighter. Dang, he was so tall and everything. That blush on her face wasn't going away anytime soon. Maybe he would consider it embarrassment? Fat chance. She proceeded to take out her purse to put some lotion on her hands. She would just have to deal with her knees later.

"A supply truck?!" She exclaimed. Faye's eyes widened in surprise and a bit of shock. How could she have been so stupid and oblivious to not notice that there were only a few people on the bus. She mad a concerned face and looked around to see if there was anyone else who looked as though they spoke English. "I don't think they're going to stop for us so probably have to ride it out there to the jungle." Faye thought allowed, looking out the window at the city in the distance. Her dream was to go to the rainforest, but not like this, how were they ever supposed to get back to the group?

"Yeah, sure." Christina said with a nod as she reached back into her bag and took out another pen and handed it to Kaleb. She read over the sheet and circled a few things that required knowledge of reading the book to do. "You can keep that pen, I've got a bunch of them in my bag." She replied back to him. Christina remembered when she was the new kid long ago and hated every moment. The least she could do was be nice to the guy. "So, um, where did you move here from?" Christina asked, starting a conversation. She usually wasn't the talkative type but Christina wasn't in the mood to discuss Gatsby and his stupid green light.

Devin nodded and walked back to his truck, getting in and sighing in relief, well, that was a close call, he was almost on channel 8 news for killing a girl in a parking lot, well, she seemed far from death, but it was still a scary thought. He shook it off and started his car back up, triple checking that no one was behind him before he backed out of the spot and started driving to the exit of the parking lot. Devin started his drive home, wondering if that girl would ever call or text him, it seemed unlikely since Devin thought she looked like the preppy type and most girls like that didn't want anything to do with the school bad boy.

The halls of Stark high school had gone from the usual loud chaos to somber and qusiet whispers for the past week. Everyone knew why the atmosphere was so depressing, but no one wanted to talk about why. The bell rang for fourth period to end and many students surged into the hallways, heading to their next class. For Cole Edwards, it was lunch time. Even though Laney was Cole's cousin, they grew up living near each other and most people often mistook them for siblings because of how close they were. They started to seperate during high school, going down different paths as Laney went off to do Theater and be Captain of the dance team while Cole stuck to playing soccer. Cole walked out of his English class and sauntered towards the cafeteria. Too many things were on Cole's mind at the moment. Laney's funeral was two days ago and that was already too emotional for most people, but something else was on Cole's mind. Like most people, he had been asking the universal question of why. Why did Laney do it? She had just got into Florida State on a scholarship and had more than enough reasons to stay alive. Since Cole's aunt had been staying at their house, he had offeres to go over everyday and feed her cats, that was when he found something that made him question Laney's death as a whole. Was Laney's death really done by her own hand? Cole's head was a sea of thoughts as he walked into the cafeteria.

(Yeah, sure) Reina was sitting in her literature class. Thank goodness it was nearing the end. She ran a hand through some loose strands before she glanced to her phone. It had only been a day since Devin had basically tapped her with his car. Maybe she would dare to, gasp, text him the day after. Yes, she would break the social norm of waiting to text a guy. She easily took out the phone before casually proceeding to type on her phone, making sure that the number was correct. 'Hello, Devin West, this is Reina Brookes, the girl you basically hit with your car the other day.' Did that sound too formal? Probably. It was too late now, especially since she had already sent it.

Devin had almost fallen asleep in his pre cal class for the third time just today. He never knew that Algebra in 8th grade was an option so he was stuck taking Pre cal as a senior with a bunch of juniors. Devin could care less about math, he couldn't stand it, same for English. Science and History, Devin actually had a B in some of the time. He was finally asleep when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He checked his phone and was surprised to see a text from an unknown number. Devin quickly read the text and was even more surprised to see it was from the girl he hit with his car. Devin quickly texted back. 'Oh yeah, sorry about that, what's up?'

What's up? What's up? Of good god she had no idea what to say next. Surely texting a guy wasn't that hard, right? Ugh, it just felt so weird and out of place. Mot of the time, she would be ignoring guys texting her, now here she was being such a hypocrite. Her blue eyes narrowed while trying to think of something. Great. She had nothing. Wait, nothing? Maybe she could try something with that? It wasn't like this was rocket science or anything. It was all about the psychology or whatever that had to do with technology. 'Not much, you're lucky my mother didn't even see the scrapes or she would be filing some lawsuit.' Maybe that was a bit much? At least she was at least attempting to initiate conversation. 'But things are fine now.' There, that would probably downplay it all and let things cool.

Devin started to fold one of his math papers to see how small he coule make it while he waited for. Reina to text back. He was actually pretty surprised that she texted him at all, and during school hours? Guess I stereo typed her too much, she seemed like the smart, preppy type. Devin thought as he felt his phone vibrate again. Reading her text, Devin cringed, jeez, a lawsuit? He didn't think her injuries looked that bad, but Reina looked like rich snob type, always having lawyers at their backs. Why couldn't he have just hit some freshman kid who would have bolted at the sight of him. Devin texted back, 'Yeah, I'm really sorry about that, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?' Devin sent the message and went back to not paying attention to his annoying Pre cal teacher.

Nevertheless, it did feel comforting that she was there with him. Had he been in such a situation in an unfamiliar country - no, continent - by himself, he surely would have been freaking out way more. Having someone who he knew and recognized made things much easier. He quietly zipped open his backpack, motioning for her to do the same. He was already looking around for things they would need in the jungle. He quickly swiped the first aid kit from the back of the truck, knowing that it would be invaluable. He tugged the seat belts out of the seats as well. They were poor quality, but they could still be used as a rope, harness, or tourniquet. Grab anything you think is useful." He whispered. Thankfully, it didn't look like the other men were paying any attention to them, and didn't care in the least what they were saying.

"Alright." Faye nodded quickly and started looking around on the floor. She saw some bottles of water and quickly shoved them into her backpack and a few other bottles of chemicals and different liquids. She took a hair tie from her backpack and put her hair up in a ponytail, that was the last thing she needed, to worry about her hair getting caught in things. Faye scanned around the area around them for anything else that looked useful. She saw a couple rain ponchos on the seat diagonal from them and what looked like government-issued rations of food. She felt the bus finally come to a screeching hault and the guys on the bus hurried off, getting ready to unload stuff in the back. Faye stood up and grabbed the ponchos and a couple handfuls of rations. While she was walking down the aisle, she looked on the seats for anything else that they might need, she saw a machete and grabbed that, it was sharp and extremely dangerous, but who knows what they would find out in the jungle.

When they finally arrived at the front of the bus, he took a deep breath and looked at the driver one last time. "Off. No people." The rider replied gruffly. And so, their fate was sealed. Hunter picked up his backpack and duffel bag and stepped off of the bus. Not long after they were off did the men file back in, their work done. Without another word, the bus sprung to life once more, turning around and driving out of the jungle. "Hey, wait! You can't just leave us here!" Hunter yelled, but it was to no avail. He sighed, setting down the duffel bag, and looking around. The jungle was alive even at night, the cacophony of animal noises surrounding them. Frogs, birds, lizards, and insects. Probably snakes and spiders, too. Wonderful. It was nearly pitch black, making it impossible to see. He peered into the darkness, and was just barely able to make out Faye's image. "It's too dark to see anything right now." He said. "We should wait for daylight."

blossomshadow] Shane relaxed a bit once he saw that she did the same. He grabbed the stack of papers that everyone was passing around, took one for himself and then passed the rest to Maya. His eyes brightened up when she spoke, he knew he'd seen this girl before somewhere, so he was guessing the dorm thing was correct. "I think so, I'm in 407 in Hardesty Hall." Shane replied, quickly glancing over the assignment sheet, his earlier excitement fading when he saw that he had to take notes on the flames and their colors and then write a lab report over everything. Why did a science have to require so much writing? This was why Shane loved coding, no pencils or paper just a computer that you could tell what to do, plus most teachers had a few choice words for Shane about his awful handwriting.Maya smiled, graciously taking the paper from the table and picking it up to read. "Yeah, I'm directly across from you, 408," she replied, glancing at him read the assignment and she let out a smirk. "You seem disappointed. Don't like lab work?"

"Oh, um, thanks," Kaleb replied, taking the pen from Christina. If he was being perfectly honest, he wasn't exactly sure what he should be taking note of, but in an attempt to not look like a fool in front of his new partner, he scribbled his name at the top of the paper. "I moved here from New York, which totally isn't as glamorous as it sounds," he answered, which was in fact the truth. Kaleb had lived in the city that never sleeps for a mission his dad had sent him on, and for some extra training in the winter conditions. "Have you lived here in Colorado your whole life?" Kaleb hoped to make enough conversation that they could pass through the whole period without talking about The Great Gatsby, as he really had no clue what the paper wanted him to talk about when it asked for an in-depth analysis of the characters. He silently cursed his dad for putting him into this advanced writing class, as he sincerely doubted that it would help him complete his mission.
[ to be honest, I'm basically in the same boat as Kaleb as I've never read the Great Gatsby in my life :'^) ]

"No, I moved here from Brooklyn, New York when I was ten." She replied. Christina glanced up in surprise at his answer, she hadn't run into anyone else from New York at her school before, mostly because a lot of people who she went to school with had lived here for most of their life. Christina looked at him instead of staying nose down in her paper, her gray eyes brightening a bit, maybe being with the new kid wouldn't be so bad. "What part of New York are you from?" She asked him curiously, a bit of interest in her voice as she asked the question, happy to not have to talk about character analysis. Christina crossed her arms and rubbed her upper arms, looking as though she was cold. She seemed to do so unknowingly, like it was a force of habit or something.

Faye watched the tail lights of the truck fade into the distance against the darkness surrounding them. She sighed, well there was no going back now, they were stranded in the middle of the jungle with mediocre supplies. She turned to face Hunter and nodded in agreement, slinging her own duffle bag across her body. "Well...what should we do about shelter?" She asked him curiously. Even though there wasn't much light left, Faye could still see the outlines of trees not too far away. The bus had dropped them in a small clearing, out in the open and left vulnerable to the dangers of the Congo basin. Faye reached into the side pocket of her backpack and pulled out a mini flashlight and quickly switched it on. There wasn't much light coming from it but it was better than none at all. Faye flashed it around the clearing they were in, no animals in sight, that seemed like a good thing.

Shane nodded, hearing her reply back to him about the room thing, Shane wasn't the most observant person, but he was sure about seeing her face before. He glanced up and pretended to be doing work when the professor walked by. He glanced up, hearing Maya's other question and shrugged in reply. "I'm not one for writing a paper on some experiment when I'd rather just do the setting stuff on fire part, plus I'm awful at Chemistry so that doesn't help." Shane replied back to her as he plugged his bunsen burner in, this lab wasn't going to start itself. Shane took one of the bottles of gas from the back of the table and scribbled down the name on his paper. "So what's you major?" He asked her.

"Engineering," Maya shrugged, hiding a sly smile on her face. She flipped her hair to one side as she began scribbling information on the paper. Her Bunson burner was already on and the beaker filled with fluid. She had started as soon as she got her paper, or she just had super speed. Either way, she was halfway done with the assignment. "Oh and I'm really good at chemistry." She added.

Shane nodded in surprise, Maya looked more like the type to be a liberal arts major, maybe like English or something. He looked over with a slightly irritated face to see that she was already halfway done with the lab. Of course she's good at Chemistry, everyone was good at Chemistry, or at least better than Shane. "That's cool, I'm a computer science major." Shane informed her, he was careful on who he told because of the surprising amount of students who went to Hudson and had no idea how to work a computer and how they always needed him to come and fix something stupid. Shane went back to his experiment and wrote down some stuff about the chemicals that sounded right.

Maya smirked at Shane as she looked at his nearly blank paper. Her entire assignment was completed in forty-five minutes. She stood up from her stool, removed her apron and googles before putting them back on the hooks. She gathered up her work and turned it in, much to the surprise of the professor. She flipped her hair out from behind her ear and glanced across the room at Shane who was still busy at work. She shot him a sly smile, one similar to the one she'd given him several weeks ago on a rooftop in Queens. She didn't know it was him, but this was her signature smile when she was sneaky and proud. With that, she opened the door and disappeared down the hallway.

[ugh i hate when that happens]
Shane watched with envy as he saw Maya complete her assignment like it was the easiest thing she'd ever done, of course, she acted like everything was easy. After wasting almost two bottles of chemicals Shane had finally finished his lab...for the most part. He scrbbled some nonsense down on his sheet about how the stuff made the fire change into different colors using bigger words so it sounded smarter. Walking up to the door, Shane tossed his poorly done assignment into the turn in bin on the professor's desk with the rest of the lab sheets. Shane hurried through the door and let out a sigh of relief, that was his last class for day so he had the afternoon to himself.
[did you want to skip to something else?]

[river magic - ] Devin started to fold one of his math papers to see how small he coule make it while he waited for. Devin texted back, 'Yeah, I'm really sorry about that, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?' Devin sent the message and went back to not paying attention to his annoying Pre cal teacher.Reina tried not to laugh at how he seemed to be trying to sweeten over what damage had been done to her. Oh, he was sort of being cute about it. That was what she was getting from it. Maybe she could take advantage of this? How? It wasn't like she tried to manipulate people to do her bidding. She would occasionally drop hints to admirers and they would be giving her schedules on what study sessions were going to take place. 'Did you have any ideas?' Reina figured that was innocent enough. She wouldn't want to ask too much from him, but if he was willing to try something, she would give him credit for that at the very least.

(I'm thinking Shane tries to see if Maya can help him with his chemistry homework and finds she's not there. He then sees some electrical charge some distance away and cue almost discoveries)
