Gale Amari "Help is on the way (they said, they said)." | ◙ |
Waking up in the morning with the weight of another body on the mattress was heart-stopping until he remembered who it was. He groaned softly and ran a hand through his hair, pushing himself up slowly so as not to disturb Quinn. It was with some effort that Gale leaned back against the wall to take in his surroundings; the shadow of his bookshelf, the trio of cacti on his desk. He inhaled deeply and let his heart settle. Every morning it was like this - his body so used to having to move the second he woke up that he'd have to take a moment to just observe his surroundings. His gaze flicked down to the other man alongside him, and he smiled faintly. Alright. This was okay, and he was fine.
Gale gently reached over Quinn to rummage around his side table, picking up his meds and swallowing them dry. That was part one of the day, and it would set the pace in - oh, about twenty minutes. Twenty whole minutes. He always felt like his mind was sharper around this time - but it never lasted for long. Just before he went to sleep for the first time and just after he woke up; two moments where he could remain himself. It was a relief that he wished he could keep up with, but it would always lead to shakes and sickness in the end. Withdrawal was a b*tch.
It took him a few more moments to push himself up so that he could climb over Quinn, stumbling briefly before he found his footing and groaned quietly, stretching his arms above his head. It took him a moment to fish out boxers and a t-shirt (plus a towel) so that he could go to the communal bathroom to shower. God. It was early enough that nobody would be there. With this thought in his mind, he turned to look at Quinn and squinted momentarily. Then, he exhaled softly.
"'m going to shower," he said softly, though he wasn't sure if the other man was awake. Possibly. Maybe? He didn't know, but he decided to go do what he wanted to do.
He'd never really taken long showers - the hot water made him ache after a while - and it didn't take long until he was dressed and ready for the day. All of that done, he left the bathroom and pushed his damp hair away from his face, entering his room again to throw the towel into his laundry basket and to pick up his handheld console, checking which game was in it. That would do. He wondered, momentarily, if he should stay in his room, but eventually decided against it. First of all; he hated people in his room without permission and that would undoubtedly happen and second of all; he highly doubted that today was going to be a free day.
Nonetheless, once he got into the living area, he let himself stretch over the sofa as if he owned it (he practically did, at this point), one leg hitched over the back and the other stretched along the length of it. He rested his handheld on his chest and absently played away. It gave him the appearance of being unaware of the world - he probably was. He was still debating going back to his room, but he also had no doubt that Quinn would appear (sooner or later), so he stayed where he was. One hand moved from his console to idly find the television remote, flicking it on to a news channel. If he noticed that it was in Russian and not English, then he didn't show it - it probably didn't make much of a difference to him.
It had been twenty minutes by now, and that meant his meds were kicking in - so that was a thing. He was aware of it but could not change it, and so he just...gamed away. If Al wanted a meeting then he could call a meeting, Gale would probably listen out for that. Probably. Maybe. He didn't know. Either way, he didn't have much on his mind. Gaming. More gaming - maybe some crafting. For a brief moment, Gale flicked his gaze over to his workbench and squinted thoughtfully. Then, he went right back to gaming, stretching his legs as far as they would go.
He was stressed, and he would not admit it. Gaming was something of a relief, he supposed, but he felt bad because the stress wasn't even vaguely related to Team Alpha. It was related to his home - Abasi was complaining because some strangers were at the oasis, Ubaid was complaining because Gale hadn't been home in a couple of months, and Mitch was complaining because there was now a loud newborn baby in the safe zone that no-one wanted to take responsibility for, but no-one wanted to throw back into the wastelands. It was a mess. He needed to take a trip back to do his job but honestly, he wasn't looking forward to it (for once). He would! Eventually! But now was not the time, because he had hopes of a mission today. Something good. A Class 5 would be nice. Something that he could have fun with because god, he was bored.
It occurred to him that maybe, just maybe, gaming wasn't the best way to spend his morning - but he did it anyway. There wasn't a particular reason to craft a weapon (though he supposed that he'd have to sort out what prototypes he wanted to keep eventually), and there weren't any in need of repair (he'd done his job after the last mission). His schedule was free and he was a free man and he chose to spend his free time either a) canoodling Quinn or playing games. He was living the life of a god. It was great. He felt great. He also wanted to nap, but it was probably frowned upon considering he'd just woken up.

Alphonse Fournier "I am a man at war and I am fighting for All of the broken people. All of the people thrown overboard." - ♠ - Holding the folder in his hand as he returned from the meeting with the council, he walked through the halls of The Order, heading back to Alpha Wing. It was their most recent job that Luo Jing had all but forced into his hands. It would be the first Wasteland mission Alpha would have partaken on since, well, six years or so. Wasteland missions deep into the unsavory landscapes were near unheard of because the intel of the monsters just didn't reach the council.
Hell, most wasteland missions were generally on the outskirts and with a proper guide, a veteran team could tackle those simply enough that Alpha wasn't sent there, but instead elsewhere. He was actually quite interested how news of Maria Flores had reached the council, having spent half an hour in a mission briefing he could have just read over in the files they had handed him. They were excessive at times, but he supposed they meant well. Luo Jing would have told him if otherwise.
Still, being called in by the council for a meeting during his morning smoke left him a little bit on edge. He would sulk later, he supposed. Reaching his team's door, he tapped in the code - hearing the door hiss and release the lock as he did so. Turning the knob, he pushed the door open, entering immediately without wasting anytime to survey their living space. Titan 5, their pilot, was set for take off in twenty minutes which gave them approximately 5 minutes to gather, 5 minutes for debrief, another 5 for changing and packing and preparing the proper materials for the wastelands, and then they would have to head to Titan 5 for departure if they wanted to get there on time.
Tapping the couch instead of Gale, Alphonse looked down at the younger man, who was playing on his video game console. "We've got a job, meet me in the briefing room and get Quinn, will you?" He kept the message short, not too interested in wasting time with formalities. He still had to round up the others and if Quinn was asleep, hell if he knew how to wake the other man.
Leaving Gale be in the living space, he walked down the corridor, knocking on Blanche's, Skylar's, and [lul]'s door as he walked by. There was no prior warning that they were getting a mission, but considering that they were a first response and tactical strike team for the order, downtime hardly ever lasted for more than four or five days if they were lucky. And he knew exactly why they had wanted Alpha in on this.
They were going into hostile territory where not only the monster was going to be a problem, but the environment and the people were going to be as well. Outskirt missions were simpler simply because they were closer to cities and easier to withdraw from if anything went wrong. A mission deep in the wastelands meant they would be on their own except for arrival, pick up, and departure. That would be the only instances the council would risk Titan 5 entering the wastelands under an invisibility cloak.
Otherwise, some wasteland communities had mobile fortresses - large ships that conquered the airs which meant that Titan 5 would be not only be a dwarf in comparison, but also outgunned. The cities also were equipped with anti-air guns, generally meant for military raids, but considering Titan 5 was nondescript and hardly identifiable from any other military aircraft, the plane would not be welcomed in the wastelands.
That and he supposed the council had yet to cease to remind him of Gale's "nature". Apparently wanting Gale on his team had been ill advised considering the younger man was a wastelander before The Order picked him up and drugged him to high hell to make him calmer. He had disregarded all the warning signs on the file and all of the council's protests, telling him there were far better candidates to pick and choose from. That and the council never suspected his pro-wastelander sympathies, nobody ever did. He kept it under lock and key. Such opinions had dangerous results in some communities.
Though The Order wasn't exactly going to despise anyone for their stance on the issue of the wastelands, more often than not with the propaganda the media fed the public about the wastelands there was quite a lot of bigotry and spite for individuals who had been handed the proverbial short end of the stick by the world.
Well, at the very least, they would have a reliable guide in the wastelands. He had been there multiple times himself in the past and though he knew how to behave around wastelanders, recognize signs of danger, and survive in the wastelands - navigating it was an entirely different beast. He generally stuck with travelling caravans or even offered his assistance to wastelanders and merchants for safe passage. And even then, there was a fair share of luck involved in avoiding the wildlife if the environment didn't eat them alive.
Though there were discrepancies from wastelands to wastelands, there were some constants. Opening the door to the briefing room, fully expecting the double knock that signified they were having a meeting would be enough for his team to gather on their own, he laid out the files and images of their mark and the creature in question. Tilting his head as he stared at the shadowy wasteland wolf-like creature, he briefly wondered what it was capable of.
Pulling out his phone just in case, he sent out a message to his team through the group chat. Just in case they weren't in their rooms. Just in case. Returning it to his pocket, he looked at the images - hazy and bad in quality as if the individual had been shaking when they had taken them. What will it take to kill you? he mused as he stared at the snarling double headed wolf.

He sensed the movement before he felt the couch move, so Gale was aware of Al's presence rather quickly. He flicked his gaze up to the supervisor and blinked owlishly. Then, he frowned. Waking up Quinn was like waking the dead, but he could probably do it. Maybe? He'd see. With a quiet sigh, he swung his legs down and stood up, wandering to the kitchen briefly to grab a bottle of cold water from the fridge. The colder the better.
Gale wandered back to his own room, using his foot to nudge it open. His handheld went on the desk, where it would probably stay until they came back from the job, and he squinted over at his best. Yep, that sure was a sleeping Quinn. He sat on the bed and crossed his legs, reaching over and resting his hand on the mattress.
"Habibi," he said softly, "you need to wake up."
For an extra measure, he used the cold water bottle to rest against his boyfriend's cheek. He didn't want to have to resort to flicking water over his face, but he wasn't going to leave Quinn to sleep in here when they were needed at a briefing. He expected that they didn't have much time before they left, either - missions often came without warning, and then they'd leave the second they knew what was happening. It was just how it went, since they were a strike team. They were supposed to be short notice, supposed to be thrown into sudden situations. It didn't mean that he had to like it, though. There was barely any time to prepare - he didn't know how long they had, so the sooner he could get Quinn up, the better.
While keeping the bottle of water against Quinn's cheek with one hand, he checked his phone at the incoming message. Probably for the others. He still sent a frowny face just to get the point across to Al, before shoving his phone back into his pocket and leaning idly against Quinn. He wasn't even sure if he was physically capable of waking the other man up but hey, it was worth a try and Al had asked him to get Quinn.
He didn't enjoy waking people up as a whole - but he doubted that Quinn would care. For one, it was for a mission.
That made Gale wonder about the mission - where was it? What was it going to be? They were common questions in his mind when he heard the word job, and he was just glad to have something to do. His boredom from earlier had been replaced with curiosity, and the faster the team were gathered in the briefing room, the better.
[ eff you dia you get this lame & stupidly short response just so u can do a quinn starter >:/ ]

Quinn O'Sullivan "I want to go back to bed." || - ♚ - || It wasn't unusual for Quinn to sleep like the living dead after a job well done. He had the strangest of sleeping habits, but once he was out - he was out like a light. Having completely missed Gale's departure from earlier, he didn't notice Gale's entrance into the room either - securely snuggled up against his favorite plush animal - an owl by the name Mr. Hoots. He wasn't dreaming either which was a plus. However, all the warmth he had gathered up during the night was replaced with something decisively cold.
Whining, he tried to move away from the cold thing before realizing that it was following him. Blearily opening his eyes to take a look at the invader sapping away his heat, he could barely make out a - was that a bottle? And a hand holding it. Was it time to get up? Did he forget about some promise to play games or something? Was there something important today? Shifting slightly, he rolled off his side onto his back to look up at Gale who was staring back down at him.
"What's up, love?" He murmured in a voice still thick with sleep. Sitting up, the blankets pooled around his legs exposing his chest to the air which was also equally cold. Not cool, he decided, as he ran a hand down his face and placed Mr. Hoots aside. Looking a bit past Gale, he squinted his eyes to see his phone on the bedside table, blinking with a notification.
He'd see what Gale wanted in a bit and try to figure out what he had forgotten after he - oh. Oh. Groaning and stretching out his muscles, a little more alert now he smiled sheepishly at Gale as he stood up from the bed. God, he was aching and tired. More tired than aching, but also aching. "So we got a job? Is the briefing soon?" He asked. Or was it already happening and he'd drag his boyfriend behind? He had slept through one before and though Al hadn't been impressed, the other man had spared him the nagging that was more common of his better half. Seraphin could talk a man's ear off.
Getting up, he grabbed some of his own clothes from Gale's closet, quickly slipping into a pair of briefs, jeans, and a t-shirt before grinning at Gale. "Didn't make you work too hard to wake me up, did I, love?" He asked, still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as he trailed barefoot to the meeting room. He'd get fully dressed later after the briefing. He lagged along, walking at a reasonable pace for Gale to keep up with as he headed to briefing room.
Al had barely glanced up at him, but the man didn't say anything to him about the mission or his current state of existence which was - if he were to be frank - exhaustion. "So, what are the deets?" He asked, raising an eyebrow as he leaned against the table, slightly knocking aside one of the pictures laid out. Alphonse narrowed his eyes but said nothing about the trespass on his perfect layout, instead he stared pointedly at the door.
"I'll go over it quickly once everyone else is here," Al said, words none too reprimanding. Actually, hell, if Quinn were to hazard a guess there was something like amusement in his tone of voice. Quinn could imagine why - he came in here with bedhead, barefoot ready for the briefing even though his mind hadn't exactly caught up to the current events. But hey, at least he was early for once!

Blanche Batteau "If I held my breath on you I would have died a thousand times And if chewing was to show you how much I cared I'd probably be wearing dentures by now"
-- ☼ --
Damned alarm clock wasn't working. Blanche woke to a startling rap on the door at a time that according to her dumb clock was 3:45 in the morning. That couldn't be right. She sat up, sheets unfurling from her legs, and went to peek out the window. She was relieved to find there was light in the sky. Right then. The knock on the door must've been Al. She didn't bother going to open it just to check; more likely than not, he was already gone to wake up the others. That meant she had little time to get ready. Surely they had been assigned a new mission. It hadn't occurred to her until that second how pathetic her life must be if she could guess exactly the reason for a knock at the door without having to open it. All other possibilities could be ruled out. Someone bringing her a surprise breakfast? Pah! Not in a million years. A strapping suitor there to declare his love for her? No, that couldn't be it. Fire? Well, maybe, but her money was on the "oh right it's just my boss telling to drag my a** out of bed" idea. Besides, that one awarded her a few moments to smoke a cigarette. So it was preferable anyway.
She stood at the windowsill, exhaling in the toxic, intoxicating death smoke as she watched the morning sun. Her left hand was used to push the curtain out of her line of sight. She stood there for as long as she deemed she could afford, the pale light offering neither warmth nor judgement. And then turned to observe her room. Might as well pack. First she decided to get dressed, that way if they had to head out ASAP, she'd at very least have something on her person. She grabbed the first thing she laid sight on: a crisp heather gray tank top and a pair of army pants. Next came socks, followed immediately by her lace-up boots which lay strewn under the foot of her bed. One bright side of a time crunch was that it gave her an excuse not to make her bed (making her bed was her least favorite activity in the world tied with physically breaking her leg). After a quick glimpse in the mirror, she decided it was unnecessary to comb her hair. "Eh, looks fine," she mumbled through her cigarette. She didn't even bother running her fingers over the mischievous white tufts.
In her bag she tossed a few clean shirts, a couple of extra pants, and any other important item she could think of. Toothbrush? Check. Razor? Check. Knife? Check. Soap? Check. Socks? Check. Underwear? Check. Toolkit? She would grab that on the way out. Hand gun? Check. Pack of cigarettes? Check. Perfume bottle? Check. Well, that was everything she absolutely needed. It all fit neatly into her travel backpack aside from her jacket and her toolkit, which she would carry by hand. She checked the clock to see how long the packing took her. Her record was one minute and thirteen seconds. Damned clock still said 3:45. "Hey, new record," she joked to herself.
Feeling slightly disheveled but otherwise ready, the blonde exited her room. She left her backpack, toolkit, and coat behind, figuring Alphonse would at least give them time to grab what they needed before they left. The last thing she needed to do before heading to the briefing room: breakfast. The kitchen wasn't far from her room so she walked there with her hands in her pockets. In the refrigerator were a few options for the most important meal of the day, ranging from a bundle of bananas, to a carton of eggs, to a jar of jam for toast. The one she reached for was an individually packaged little tub of yogurt. Someone else was probably saving it for themselves, but duty called. She needed protein and there was no time to make any eggs.
She ate her yogurt while on her way to the briefing room. Unsurprisingly, she was not the first person to arrive. When she walked in she recognized the backs of Gale and Quinn. They stood opposite Alphonse, who looked a it tired but as sharp as ever. Blanche made her presence known by uttering a colorful expletive at the sight of what the supervisor held in his hand. "Phone. That's what I forgot," she announced to the room. She tossed her empty yogurt container into the nearest waste bin then walked over to join the discussion. From what she overheard while walking in, the "deats" wouldn't be spilled until everyone was present.
"Can I sit?" she asked before falling into the nearest chair. "I've hardly had time to catch my breath since jumping up this morning." She pulled a cigarette from her breast pocket then held out the pack to anyone else who was interested. "I took the liberty of packing, assuming of course that you didn't call us in here to gossip and play cards."

Skylar David ...I don't have a cool quote to put here, sorry
Skylar David was, as usual, one of the last members of Team Alpha to wake up in the morning. From underneath the large mountain of blankets and pillows that rested atop her bed, she groaned, stirring at the sound of a loud knock at her door. She waited, hoping for whoever had knocked to call out, to reveal somehow who had dared to disturb her slumber. But nobody did. That meant she knew exactly who was calling. But still, she allowed herself to doubt, if just for a moment, rolling to the other side of the bed and tucking her ginger head under her arm. She didn't want to wake up. Not yet.
She didn't dream all that often, but when she did, her fantasies took one of two forms: the best possible scenario, or the worst. The dream that the boss had just woken her up from took the role of the former. If she concentrated hard enough she could still feel the soft whisper of smooth fingers caressing her cheek. Soft lips brushing her own, hair falling into her face and tickling her forehead. An indistinct murmur in her ear. She felt a surge of strong emotion. Hunger. Longing. Pain. It wasn't healthy to cling to the past, she knew. But still she lay there, desperately clinging to the last tendrils of what had once been. What she wished still was.
Enough. Blearily, she pushed herself up into a slumped, yet still technically upright position, rubbing her eyes. She had slept better last night than she had in a while, she reflected; she supposed she had fallen asleep at about ten. This was good, considering that her usual circadian rhythm had her awake well past midnight and waking up pre-dawn. She blinked, gazing around her room; half appeared crystal clear, the other half hazy, the room far too dark to make out much of anything. With a grunt of protest she moved her body from the bed to the window, drawing back the blackout curtain that kept her room pitch-black (she really could not stand to sleep if there was any sort of light coming in). Better, she reflected, though not by much.
A sudden beeping sound caught her attention, and she turned, crossing the soft carpeted floor to her nightstand. She knew exactly what she was going to find, but still scooped up her cell anyway, unlocking it and closing her right eye so she could focus her left on the message that appeared in rather small print onscreen. Al wanted the team in the briefing room in five. Well, okay then.
Dropping the phone on her bed she crossed to the closet, pulling open the doors. She then selected a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, her usual attire; unlike Al Fournier, she did not care much for fancy business attire, which she found to be constricting and rather hard to fight in. She thought that she owned one skirt, perhaps, shoved somewhere in the back of her closet where it hadn't seen the light of day since she put it there five years ago. She had gained weight since then; it probably didn't even fit her anymore. Tucking the outfit under one arm, she made her way to her bathroom, where she slipped inside the shower. She had very little time, but still managed to scrub up from head to toe-- being an ex-surgeon would do that. She had learned to clean herself well, and to do it quickly. Changing into the clean clothes, she gathered her wet hair into a ponytail, then scurried back to her closet, where she grabbed her shoes and the lab coat that hung next to the bed on a hook. It was unnecessary, but she found the briefing room to always be dreadfully cold. Perhaps it was just the things that were discussed there that made it seem so.
She exited the room, closing the door behind her, and made her way down the hall, sliding her cell into a pocket of her jeans and her arms into crisp white sleeves. She took a deep breath, pausing by the door to touch the small star that hung on a golden chain around her neck. As usual, it worked to calm her nerves, and she pushed her way inside, feeding off of newfound confidence. She found four familiar faces awaiting her arrival; [lul] had not yet arrived. Alphonse, Gale, Quinn, and Blanche were all in various positions around the room. She glanced momentarily at the file that Al had placed before him, then looked away, hoping that this one would be a quick one-and done, at least by team Alpha standards.
Heh. That was a bit much to ask for, was it not?
"Shalom," she greeted in a mumble that was halfway between sleepy and alert as she took her place, pulling up a chair. "I see I am not the last to arrive this morning. That is always a good sign."

Well we already got something of a techie/strategist from Quinn, a weapons specialist from Gale, a cqc specialist from Al, a trapper in Blanche, and a medic from Skylar.... so let's see, there's a list I made previously... vehicle specialist, shield expert [fighting w/ shield is 10/10 confirmed bada-s af], explosives expert, and anything else you could imagine that would probs be useful to a strike team.
In times of doubt, refer to elite police and military roles. "Communications, Medical, Jump Master, Dive Master, Sniper, Advanced Demo, Advanced CQB, Climber, Driver, etc."
Probably don't need a communications expert or a jump/dive master, but you get the general gist of what you could pick from.
